To check whether your motherboard supports a RAM upgrade, identify the exact motherboard and CPU, then compare a candidate kit with the board’s specifications, manual and memory support list. Check the memory type, capacity, speed and slot arrangement before buying; no single RAM kit or capacity is right for every PC.
1. Identify your motherboard and CPU
Find the motherboard’s exact model name and, if shown, its hardware revision. Also note your processor model: the motherboard and CPU both affect which memory configurations are supported. MSI’s memory upgrade guide shows how to use the board model to reach its product specifications and memory support information.

If you have an OEM prebuilt PC, start with the complete system model and its service documentation. A retail motherboard’s specifications or QVL may not fully describe an OEM-specific system, even if the board appears to use a familiar model.
2. Check the motherboard’s specifications and manual
Open the manufacturer’s page for the exact board. Review its specifications, manual and support pages, looking for the following details:
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR4 desktop memory RAM kit (2x16GB) that operates at 3200MHz, 3000MHz, or 2666MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Easy Installation: Upgrade your desktop RAM with ease—no computer skills required Follow step-by-step how-to guides available at Crucial for a smooth, worry-free installation
- Compatibility Guaranteed: Ensure seamless compatibility with your desktop by using the Crucial System Scanner or Crucial Upgrade Selector—get accurate recommendations for your specific device
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR4 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = UDIMM, Pin Count = 288-pin, PC Speed = PC4-25600, Voltage = 1.2V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx8 or 2Rx8
- Memory type and form factor: Confirm the required DDR generation and whether the system takes desktop DIMMs or another form factor.
- Maximum capacity: Check the total supported capacity and any per-slot or per-module limits stated in the manual.
- Slots: Note the number of memory slots and which ones are available.
- Speed: Read the listed speeds and any notes about supported configurations or conditions.
Do not infer compatibility from a DDR label alone. A candidate kit must match the board’s memory type, and its capacity and speed must fit the board’s specifications and the CPU’s supported limits.
3. Search the memory QVL for the exact kit
On the motherboard’s support page, open the Memory Support or memory QVL (Qualified Vendor List), if provided. Search for the RAM manufacturer’s exact part number, not just a product family or advertised speed. ASUS’s QVL lookup instructions explain how to find a board’s list and search for a memory part number.
A matching entry is evidence that the vendor tested that memory configuration. Check the listed module count and any other configuration details; an entry for one arrangement does not necessarily establish that every capacity or number of modules from the same product line was tested.

- Capacity – 32GB RAM KIT (2 x 16GB Modules) Speed up to 2666MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered 288-Pin 1.2V UDIMM.
- Specs – Black PCB Color and Dual Rank (2Rx8).
- Compatibility – Designed for selected DDR4 Desktop PCs and workstations that support 288-Pin UDIMM memory. NOT compatible with Laptop SODIMM slots.
- Installation – Plug-and-Play Upgrade, Quick and Easy to Install, no expertise required (please refer to your system's manual for guidelines).
- Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.
If a kit is absent, that does not establish that it is incompatible. MSI says an unlisted model has not been officially tested, so compatibility cannot be guaranteed. Treat the absence as uncertainty and weigh the board’s general specifications and any system-specific documentation rather than reading it as a definite failure.
4. Check the processor’s memory limits
Look up your exact CPU model on its manufacturer’s specification page. Intel’s processor lookup identifies memory type, maximum memory size, supported channels and ECC support; Intel also directs users to the motherboard manual or vendor for compatibility with a specific board. See Intel’s guide to finding processor memory specifications.
Compare the CPU’s supported memory type and limits with the motherboard’s. The usable configuration depends on both; a board’s listed capability alone is not enough to confirm what your installed processor supports.

- [UNCOMPROMISED 32GB PERFORMANCE] Supercharge your rig with 32GB (two 16GB modules) of high-speed memory. Designed for power users, this kit effortlessly handles heavy 4K video editing, complex 3D rendering, and lets you play AAA games while streaming without a single stutter.
- [3200MHZ BLAZING FAST SPEED & CL16] Experience ultra-responsive multitasking with speeds up to 3200MHz (PC4-25600) and tight CL16-18-18-42 timings. NOTE: To achieve the advertised 3200MHz speed, you MUST enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in your motherboard's BIOS.
- [AGGRESSIVE ALUMINUM HEATSINK] Keep your system cool under extreme pressure. The premium aluminum heat spreader efficiently dissipates heat from the memory modules, preventing thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions while adding a sleek, aggressive look to your build.
- [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
- [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).
5. Decide whether to add modules or replace the existing RAM
Check how many slots are occupied, the capacity and part number of the installed modules, and how much capacity the board and CPU support. Then compare the proposed configuration with the support information:
- For an addition, make sure there are open slots and that the resulting module count and total capacity fit the board and CPU limits.
- For a replacement, compare the new kit’s type, per-module and total capacity, speed, and exact part number with the specifications and QVL.
- If you intend to combine old and new modules, do not assume they will operate together at their advertised speeds. Check the board’s specifications and support list for the planned configuration.
6. Follow the manual’s slot diagram
Use the motherboard manual’s DIMM population diagram to choose the slots. Slot names and preferred arrangements vary by board, so do not copy a layout from another motherboard. For example, MSI’s guide recommends DIMMA2 for one module and DIMMA2 plus DIMMB2 for two modules on the example board it describes; those positions are not a universal rule.
Before installing memory, shut down the PC and disconnect its power as directed by the board or system documentation. Seat the modules in the specified slots and make sure they are fully inserted.

7. Verify detection and speed after installation
Start the PC and check BIOS/UEFI to confirm that the expected total capacity is detected. Also check the configured memory speed. A RAM kit’s advertised rating and its initial operating speed may differ: Intel notes that a module’s SPD (Serial Presence Detect) can set a lower default frequency than the advertised rating. See Intel’s RAM frequency configuration guidance.
If the capacity is wrong or the system will not start, power down and check module seating and slot placement against the manual. If the system detects the full capacity but reports a lower speed than expected, review BIOS/UEFI settings and confirm the relevant CPU and motherboard limits. ASUS advises considering a BIOS update when a configuration on its support list still has issues; follow the instructions for your exact board and treat an update as a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee of compatibility.
