Check the tablet’s model or machine type against Lenovo’s specifications before buying a microSD card: supported capacity, file system and even the card-tray layout can vary.
How to check whether your Lenovo tablet has a card slot
- Find the exact model. Check the device label or open Settings and look for the model information. Record the full model name or machine type, not just a family name such as “Tab M10.”
- Look up that model in Lenovo PSREF. Check its official specifications for a microSD slot, maximum card capacity and supported file system. For example, Lenovo lists a microSD slot on the Tab M11 and Tab P12, but those examples do not establish compatibility for every Lenovo tablet.
- Confirm the configuration. The Tab M11 specifications distinguish WLAN and WWAN versions: the WLAN card slot is for microSD, while the WWAN slot accommodates a nano-SIM and microSD. Check your own configuration before opening the tray.
- Choose a card within the listed limits. Match the card’s capacity and format to the specification for your exact model. If the specifications do not confirm a slot or supported limit, do not assume one based on another tablet in the same family.
Capacity and format differ by model
These Lenovo specifications illustrate why there is no single capacity limit for “a Lenovo tablet.” The values below apply to the specific models and documents linked; they are not a guarantee for other models or configurations.

| Model | Slot and supported capacity or format stated by Lenovo | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tab M11 | microSD; up to 1TB, exFAT | WLAN and WWAN tray layouts differ; the WWAN version combines nano-SIM and microSD. |
| Tab P12 | microSD; up to 1TB, exFAT | Confirm that your exact model specification matches this example. |
| Tab M10 | FAT32 up to 256GB; exFAT up to 1TB | See the Tab M10 specification for this model. |
| Tab M10 (3rd Gen) | FAT32 up to 128GB; exFAT up to 2TB | Do not apply this limit to other Tab M10 models; see the Tab M10 (3rd Gen) specification. |
What can you store on the card?
What the card can do depends on how Android lets you set it up on that tablet. Google describes two options, but their availability and behavior can vary by Lenovo model and software version.
Portable storage
Use this option for files such as photos and videos. Portable storage can be moved between compatible devices, but it cannot be used to install apps.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
Internal storage
Where the tablet offers this option, the card can be used for files and apps. It is configured for that device and cannot be transferred between devices as portable storage.
Inserting a card does not by itself guarantee that apps will move, that every download will be saved there, or that the card will act as extra RAM. Check the options offered on your device rather than assuming a particular behavior.

- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
How to set up and use a microSD card
- Insert a card that meets your tablet’s published capacity and format limits. Use the tray arrangement specified for your configuration.
- Follow the tablet’s prompts to set up the card, if shown. Choose portable or internal storage only if that option is available and suits your needs.
- Back up any files on the card before formatting. Formatting permanently deletes its data, according to Google’s Android SD-card guidance.
- To move or copy files, use the Files app’s SD-card controls. Google’s Files Help instructions cover the general process.
If the tablet does not recognize the card
- Check Settings to see whether the card appears there.
- If it does not, remove and reinsert it, then check again, as Google Files Help advises.
- Recheck the exact Lenovo specification for the card’s capacity and file system; a card that works in another tablet may exceed this model’s stated limits.
- If the card still is not recognized, consult Lenovo’s support information for the exact model rather than formatting a card that contains files you have not backed up.
What to buy
Once you have confirmed that your exact tablet has a microSD slot, choose a microSD card within that model’s stated capacity and file-system limits. The Tab M11 and Tab P12 specifications give examples of support up to 1TB with exFAT, but older or different Lenovo models can list other limits. A USB card reader may help transfer files in some workflows, but it does not add storage through a built-in microSD slot.
