Check your laptop’s exact model specifications and manual for two separate features: DisplayPort output over USB-C (often called DP Alt Mode) and USB Power Delivery input for charging the laptop. A USB-C connector describes its shape, not what that particular port can do. Depending on the model, it may handle data only, video, charging, or a combination.
To use one port for both a monitor and laptop charging, the port must support both video output and power input, and the connected display, charger, cable, or dock must also meet the requirements for the job.

How do I know if my laptop USB-C port supports DisplayPort?
Look up the exact laptop model on its manufacturer’s support site and check the port or interface specifications, then confirm the details in the user manual. Look for wording such as DisplayPort, DP, or DisplayPort Alt Mode. Thunderbolt is another specification that may indicate display capability, but check the laptop’s documentation for the ports and functions it supports.

Do not treat “USB-C,” “USB 3.x,” or a listed data-transfer speed as proof of display output. USB-C names the connector, while the circuitry and functions behind it vary by model. MSI’s support guidance describes Type-C ports that may provide data only or may also support video, Power Delivery, or Thunderbolt; its FAQ was updated on July 31, 2026 (MSI USB Type-C Port FAQ). ASUS likewise recommends checking the exact model’s specifications and electronic manual rather than assuming that ports with the same shape have the same capabilities (ASUS USB-C interface specifications).

Use the port list and manual together
Start with the manufacturer’s product page for the full model number, including any suffix or configuration identifier. In its interface or I/O section, search for “DisplayPort,” “DP Alt Mode,” and “Thunderbolt.” Then use the manual to find a port diagram or function table that makes clear which physical USB-C port the feature applies to. A laptop can have multiple USB-C ports with different capabilities.
Manuals may also describe display connections in a section about external monitors, rather than in the port list. ASUS’s display-identification guidance recommends checking the model-specific manual; it notes that specifications depend on the manual for each model (ASUS guidance on identifying USB-C display support).
Treat logos as clues, not proof
A DisplayPort marking or Thunderbolt symbol can help identify a port with display capability, and a power-related marking may indicate a charging function. But symbols and their meanings are not a universal substitute for documentation. Use the exact model’s manual or specifications to confirm what the marked port supports. ASUS describes USB-C port functions that can be data-only, charging-capable, display-capable, or able to combine display and charging (ASUS USB-C interface specifications).
Can I charge my laptop through USB-C?
Only if the laptop’s USB-C port accepts power for the computer. In the official specifications or manual, look for an explicit statement such as USB Power Delivery input, PD charging, or wording that the port accepts power to charge the laptop. Charging a phone or another accessory from a laptop port is a different function: it does not establish that the laptop itself can be charged through that port.
Check the port’s charging capability separately from video output. A specification can list DP Alt Mode without establishing USB-C charging input, or list power support without establishing display output. MSI documents PD input and video output as separate port functions, with supported voltage and wattage varying by laptop model (MSI USB Type-C Port FAQ). ASUS also separates charging and display capabilities in its USB-C guidance (ASUS USB-C interface specifications).
Match the charger and cable to the laptop
Once documentation confirms USB-C charging, check the laptop’s required input and the supported power level for that port. Choose a USB-C Power Delivery charger and cable that meet those requirements; a connector that fits is not evidence that the charger provides enough power or that the cable supports the needed level.
Microsoft identifies an underpowered or incompatible charger, an unsuitable cable, or use of the wrong port as possible causes of slow or failed charging in its USB-C troubleshooting guidance. The laptop’s own specifications determine the relevant requirements; there is no single wattage that applies to every USB-C-chargeable laptop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen comparing chargers, check the output information against the laptop’s documented input rather than choosing by plug shape or by a general “USB-C charger” label. Also verify the cable separately: the charger may have an appropriate rating while the cable is unsuitable for the power level you need. If a charger works only intermittently or the computer reports slow charging, try the documented charging port and a charger-and-cable combination that meets the laptop’s requirements.

- Reliable, Secure Connections: Featuring a low-profile USB-C connector and locking DisplayPort latches, this Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable ensures a secure, stable connection with no accidental disconnections, providing uninterrupted performance during critical tasks or presentations. *Always remember to press the locking latch on the DP end to release when unplugging.
- Important Note: This USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable is unidirectional — it works from a USB-C port with DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3/4/5 (source) to a DisplayPort monitor only. It does not work in reverse (DP → USB-C) and is not compatible with HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 1/2, or USB-C monitors.
Does this USB-C port support both a monitor and charging?
It can, but verify both capabilities on the same physical port. The specifications or manual need to establish that the port supports video output—typically DisplayPort Alt Mode—and accepts USB Power Delivery input for the laptop. Do not infer one function from the other.
Some model documentation describes one port that combines DisplayPort output and laptop power input. For example, a port table in HP’s computer documentation illustrates this combination for a specific computer; it is an example, not a rule for other models (HP computer documentation).
Confirm the whole connection, not just the laptop
For video, the laptop port, display, and cable or adapter all need to support the required DisplayPort Alternate Mode connection. Microsoft lists support across the PC, external display, and cable as a requirement for this type of USB-C display connection (Microsoft USB-C troubleshooting guidance).
For charging through a monitor or dock, that device must provide power delivery at a level suitable for the laptop, and the cable must support the needed power. A monitor can show a picture while supplying too little power to charge a particular laptop. That follows from the separate video and charging requirements documented by Microsoft and the model-dependent PD input described by MSI; check the specifications of the laptop and the power-providing device before relying on a single-cable setup.
That means a one-cable arrangement has two jobs to satisfy: send a supported video signal to the display and deliver suitable power back to the laptop. Confirm that the monitor or dock is a power source for the laptop, not merely a display connection, and compare its documented power delivery with the laptop’s required input. A monitor that displays an image is not automatically an adequate laptop charger.
How to verify your laptop, display, and charger step by step
- Identify the full laptop model. Read the product label, system information, or the manufacturer’s support utility. Record the complete model and configuration identifier, not just a product family name; similar-looking versions can have different port functions.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for that model. Find its official specifications and inspect the interface, I/O, or ports section. Search for “DisplayPort,” “DP Alt Mode,” “USB Power Delivery,” “PD charging,” and “Thunderbolt.” Read video and charging as separate features. A USB data speed by itself proves neither one.
- Check the user manual. Find the port diagram or function table, then look for the external-display and charging or power sections. Confirm which physical port the listed features refer to. ASUS recommends consulting both model specifications and the electronic manual; MSI also directs readers to the model’s I/O port information (ASUS specifications guidance; MSI port FAQ).
- Compare the markings with the documentation. Use any symbols by the ports to help distinguish them, but confirm their meaning in the manual. If the laptop has several USB-C ports, note which one supports video and which one accepts laptop charging.
- Match the display path. For a direct USB-C-to-DisplayPort connection, confirm DP Alt Mode on the laptop port and support in the display and cable. For HDMI, use an adapter or dock that supports the laptop’s video mode and the display connection. Check the specifications of all components for the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use; there is no universal limit established by the connector shape alone.
- Match the charging path. Confirm that the selected laptop port accepts USB PD input. Compare the laptop’s required input with the charger’s output and the cable’s power capability. If using a display or dock as the power source, check its power delivery specifications as well.
- Test the simplest supported setup first. Connect the display directly to the confirmed video-capable port, or the charger directly to the confirmed charging port. This removes a dock or other intermediary while you establish whether the basic connection works.
If the official product page gives only a general description, use the manual’s port diagram and function table to resolve which connection belongs to which port. Do not assume that every port in a laptop’s USB-C cluster shares the same capabilities. The exact model and physical port are the useful units of comparison.
Which setup should you use?
Choose the connection that fits your display, charging, and peripheral needs. A cable or adapter with the right connector is not enough by itself: its video and power capabilities must suit the laptop and display.

| Setup | What to verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C to DisplayPort cable | The laptop’s exact port supports DP Alt Mode; the cable and display support the intended connection. | A direct path has fewer intermediary devices to check, but does not by itself provide laptop charging. |
| USB-C to HDMI adapter | The laptop supports the required USB-C video mode, and the adapter and display support the intended connection. | Useful when the display connection calls for HDMI; the adapter adds another component whose specifications matter. |
| USB-C dock with display output | The laptop supports a video mode the dock accepts, the dock supports the display connection, and any dock charging output meets the laptop’s input requirement. | Can combine multiple connections, but adds compatibility and power variables. Microsoft lists docks among possible causes of USB-C connection problems (Microsoft guidance). |
In each case, check the display’s and connection hardware’s specifications for the resolution and refresh rate you need. The available documentation does not establish a universal limit for USB-C video; supported results depend on the exact laptop, adapter or dock, cable, and display.

Connect to all devices with DP ports, compatible with Nvidia RTX 5090 and AMD Radeon RX 7900 graphic cards, Odyssey G8 G9, HDTV and more
A direct USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable is a straightforward option when the laptop port is confirmed to support DP Alt Mode and the display has a compatible DisplayPort connection. If you need HDMI, verify the adapter or dock’s video support instead of assuming that any USB-C-to-HDMI product will work with any USB-C port. A dock can add useful connections, but it also adds another compatibility link and, when used for charging, another power specification to check.
Before buying a cable, adapter, charger, or dock, write down the requirements you have confirmed: the laptop port’s video mode, whether it accepts power input, the display connection, and the laptop’s charging requirements. Then compare those with the accessory’s specifications. No current official universal specification for resolution, refresh-rate ceiling, wattage, or price is published; those details must be checked for the exact equipment.

- Recheck that the exact port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. A USB-C data port without video output will not provide a native DP Alt Mode display signal.
- Confirm that the cable or adapter and monitor support the connection mode. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance calls for Alternate Mode support across the PC, display, and cable, and advises using the port that supports the mode (Microsoft USB-C troubleshooting guidance).
- Temporarily remove a dock and connect the display directly. If the direct connection works, investigate the dock’s video compatibility and connection requirements.
- Check the laptop manual for any display-output conditions. MSI notes that some video outputs can depend on whether the laptop is using integrated or discrete GPU mode (MSI USB Type-C Port FAQ).
Also distinguish native DP Alt Mode from a DisplayLink-based display product. ASUS describes DisplayLink as a separate, driver-dependent route; such a product’s operation does not prove that the laptop port has native DisplayPort Alt Mode. If the adapter uses DisplayLink, follow the adapter maker’s compatibility and driver instructions rather than treating it as evidence of native video output.
The laptop does not charge or charges slowly
- Confirm that the selected port accepts USB PD power input for the laptop; an accessory-charging function is not the same thing.
- Check the charger’s output against the laptop’s documented requirements, and check that the cable supports the required power level.
- Try the documented charging port and a direct charger connection while diagnosing. Microsoft identifies the wrong port, an insufficient charger, and a cable limitation among possible causes of slow or failed charging (Microsoft USB-C troubleshooting guidance).
- If a display or dock supplies power, check its power output as well as the laptop’s required input. Video working does not show that the device supplies enough power for the laptop.
If charging still fails, compare the equipment against the laptop manufacturer’s requirements one item at a time: the physical port, charger output, and cable rating. A change in one part of the path can help identify whether the issue is an unsupported laptop port or an unsuitable charger or cable. Avoid assuming that a charger is compatible merely because its USB-C plug fits.
A dock fails but a direct connection works
Check that the dock accepts the video mode supported by the laptop, supports the display connection, and provides suitable charging output if you expect it to power the computer. A dock introduces an additional link and power source to verify; Microsoft includes docks among possible USB-C connection issues (Microsoft guidance).
For diagnosis, test the laptop-to-display path directly before adding the dock back into the setup. If the direct connection works, check the dock’s compatibility notes and specifications rather than concluding that the laptop’s USB-C port is faulty. Confirm both its display path and, if applicable, its power delivery.

Do not assume every USB-C display adapter uses native DisplayPort Alt Mode. ASUS identifies DisplayLink-based display products as a separate, driver-dependent route (ASUS display-support guidance). If an adapter relies on DisplayLink, follow the adapter maker’s compatibility and driver instructions; that does not establish that the laptop’s USB-C port has native DP Alt Mode output.

What the USB-C label does—and does not—tell you
The reversible USB-C plug tells you which connector fits. It does not, on its own, specify data speed, video output, charging input, charging wattage, or which port on a multi-port laptop has a given function. MSI summarizes the distinction this way: “USB Type-C only defines the physical shape of the connector. The internal circuitry, controller, and motherboard design vary by laptop model” (MSI USB Type-C Port FAQ).
Likewise, a working monitor connection establishes that a video path works; it does not establish that the laptop can be charged through that port. A charging connection establishes power delivery, not display output. Use model-specific documentation to verify each function you need, then match the cable, adapter, display, charger, or dock to those documented capabilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my laptop USB-C port supports DisplayPort?
Check the official specifications and manual for your exact laptop model. Look for DisplayPort, DP, DP Alt Mode, or supported Thunderbolt display output, and confirm which physical USB-C port the feature applies to. USB-C shape and data-transfer speed alone do not prove video support.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I charge my laptop through USB-C?
Only if the laptop’s documentation says the port accepts USB Power Delivery input or otherwise accepts power to charge the computer. Then match the charger and cable to the laptop’s specified power requirements. Powering a phone or accessory from the laptop is not proof that the laptop can charge through USB-C.
Does this USB-C port support both a monitor and charging?
Verify both DP Alt Mode video output and USB PD power input for the same physical port in the exact model’s manual or specifications. The display, cable or adapter, and any dock must also support the video connection; a monitor or dock used for charging must supply suitable power for the laptop.
Why does my USB-C monitor or charger not work?
For no picture, verify DP Alt Mode on the selected port and compatibility of the display and cable or adapter; try a direct connection without a dock. For no or slow charging, verify that the port accepts laptop power input and check the charger output, cable rating, and correct port. Some laptops also have model-specific display or GPU-mode conditions.
Will a USB-C cable that fits my laptop support video and charging?
Not necessarily. Connector fit does not establish video-mode support or that the cable carries the power level the laptop needs. Check the cable’s specifications alongside the laptop, display, charger, or dock requirements.
The Bottom Line
USB-C tells you the connector shape, not whether the port outputs DisplayPort video or accepts charging power. Check your exact laptop model’s specifications and manual for DP Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery input separately, confirm the physical port, then match the display path and charger/cable to the stated requirements.
