To check whether your laptop’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, find the exact model and configuration, then check the manufacturer’s specifications and manual for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” or USB-C video output. A DisplayPort symbol beside the port is a helpful clue, but the model documentation is the stronger confirmation.
Check the laptop’s exact model and documentation
- Identify the laptop’s model number or product identifier. Use the full model name from the laptop’s label, system information, or the manufacturer’s support page. Product families can have different configurations, so do not rely on a series name alone.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification page and manual for that model. Search for “DisplayPort,” “DP Alt Mode,” “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “video output,” or the listed functions of the USB-C port. ASUS recommends checking the product overview and specifications and consulting the notebook’s USB-C function instructions: ASUS support guidance.
- Look for an explicit video-output statement. A specification that says the USB-C port supports DisplayPort or video output is useful confirmation. If it lists USB-C only, or the manual does not make the port’s function clear, ask the manufacturer’s support team about the exact model and port.
VESA says USB-C connectors that support DisplayPort over USB-C will “normally” have a DisplayPort logo near the connector, and advises that device documentation should provide the relevant information: VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ. Treat the logo as an indicator, not a definitive test: “normally” does not mean every supported port must be marked.

What does—and does not—show that USB-C supports video
DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) carries DisplayPort video over the USB Type-C connection. The port can allocate high-speed lanes to DisplayPort, with the available combination of video, USB data, and power depending on the implementation. The label alone does not guarantee a particular resolution, refresh rate, HDR support, USB data rate, or charging capability; those depend on the laptop, display, cable, and any adapter or dock in the connection. See VESA’s overview of DisplayPort over USB-C.

- Charging: Charging support by itself does not confirm DP Alt Mode.
- USB data speed: A fast USB data specification does not by itself confirm video output.
- Thunderbolt: Do not infer Thunderbolt from the USB-C shape. Plugable says Thunderbolt ports are backward compatible with USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, but check the laptop’s documentation for what the specific port supports: Plugable’s port-capability guide.
Choose a cable, adapter, or dock only after confirming video support
Once the laptop’s video output and the display’s input are confirmed, choose a connection that matches both ends. For a DisplayPort monitor, VESA recommends a USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter cable and recommends choosing a DP-certified cable. For HDMI, use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter that accepts DisplayPort video from the host. In either case, check the laptop and monitor documentation for the resolution and refresh rate you need.

A dock can provide video and additional connections, but check that the laptop supports video over USB-C and that the dock supports the required display mode. A USB-C hub that handles USB data alone does not gain DisplayPort Alt Mode video simply because it plugs into USB-C; VESA distinguishes USB-only hubs from docks that implement video. If the laptop lacks native USB-C video, a DisplayLink-based adapter or dock may be an alternative, subject to its software, operating-system, and workload requirements. DisplayLink is a separate, driver-based technology—not DP Alt Mode. ASUS and Plugable describe this distinction in their guidance: ASUS and Plugable.
If the specifications are unclear
Contact the laptop maker with the exact model or product identifier and ask whether the specific USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or video output. If the laptop has multiple USB-C ports, ask about the port you intend to use. Do not buy a video adapter on the assumption that it can add video output to a port that does not provide it.

When comparing possible connections, check the source port’s supported standard, the monitor’s input, the resolution and refresh rate supported by the complete setup, and whether a dock preserves the USB data and charging features you need. Also check whether the alternative requires software or drivers. These checks establish compatibility for your setup; no single DP Alt Mode label guarantees every feature.
