To check yours, open All Settings > Device Options > Device Info to confirm the model, then inspect the bottom edge of the display for a yellow or discolored horizontal band. A visual match is a reason to contact Amazon, but it is not a serial-number diagnosis or proof that every Colorsoft is affected.
Amazon said on November 5, 2024 that customers who noticed the band could contact customer service about a replacement or refund. That was a dated public statement; ask Amazon what remedy, eligibility rules and regional terms apply to your individual purchase now.

What the reported Kindle screen defect looks like
The reported symptom is a yellow or otherwise discolored horizontal band along the lower edge of the Kindle Colorsoft display. It is visible during ordinary reading or other normal screen use, rather than being a label in the software or a warning message.
The model linked to the reports is Kindle Colorsoft, including the Colorsoft Signature Edition introduced by Amazon in October 2024 as the company’s first color Kindle. Amazon’s launch announcement identifies the product and its release context at About Amazon.
#1 Best Overall
- Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
- A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
- Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
- Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Available public information does not identify an affected serial-number range, a production batch, or a percentage of devices with the problem. It also does not establish that every Colorsoft has the band, or that other Kindle generations share this specific issue. Treat the check as a way to document a possible symptom and get an official support decision, not as a conclusive hardware test.
Check the Kindle model before judging the screen
Start with the device information screen. This prevents a common mistake: assuming that any unusual shade on an e-reader is the same Colorsoft issue. Amazon’s model-identification instructions use the following path on supported devices:
- Wake the Kindle and swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Select All Settings.
- Open Device Options.
- Tap Device Info.
Amazon’s guide, Identify Your Kindle E-Reader, says this area contains device information, including the model name on supported devices. Menus can vary by generation, and Amazon cautions that not every Kindle generation has been available in every marketplace. If your labels differ, look for the device-information or about-device screen rather than assuming the unit is a Colorsoft.

What to record from Device Info
- Write down the exact model name shown, including whether it says Colorsoft or Colorsoft Signature Edition.
- Record the serial number if it is displayed. A customer-support answer attributed to Amazon Devices Customer Support says the serial number and generation are shown in the device information area; the answer is reproduced on this Best Buy Q&A page. That information can help an agent locate your order or device record, but it is not a published defect lookup.
- Note the software version and your purchase date or order number if you have them available. These details are useful when support asks you to verify the unit, although no special software version or serial-number rule for this issue has been published in the available information.
Inspect the lower edge of the display
Once you have confirmed the model, inspect the screen under normal reading conditions. Open a page with a light background or another screen where a horizontal color change would be easy to see, and look across the entire bottom edge. The reported pattern is a band running along that lower area, with a yellow or discolored appearance compared with the rest of the page.
- Hold the Kindle at a normal reading angle and brightness.
- Look at the bottom portion of the screen from left to right.
- Check more than one page or screen so that a page illustration, footer, or other content is not mistaken for a display change.
- If you see a persistent band, photograph the screen in even lighting. Include the full device and, if possible, a second close image that shows the lower edge clearly.
- Record when you noticed it and whether it appears during ordinary reading. Do not describe it as a confirmed manufacturing defect; describe exactly what you can see.
Lighting, camera exposure and the color of the page can change how an e-ink display appears in a photograph. A picture is therefore supporting evidence for a support conversation, not an independent diagnosis. The practical test is whether the discoloration remains visible on the device during normal use and whether Amazon’s agent accepts the report under the terms for your purchase.
Repeat the check to avoid a false match
A single screen is not enough to identify the reported pattern. Turn to a text-heavy page, then to another page with a different background or illustration. Check with the front light at the setting you normally use, and then at a lower setting if the band is difficult to see. Keep the viewing angle ordinary rather than tilting the Kindle sharply toward a lamp. These steps do not diagnose the hardware, but they help you tell support whether the color change is persistent, where it appears and under what normal conditions.
Decide what your observation means
| What you find | What it establishes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The model is not identified as Kindle Colorsoft and there is no bottom band | You have not matched the reported Colorsoft symptom. | Do not treat another display characteristic as this specific report. If you have a different fault, describe that separate symptom to Amazon support. |
| The model is Kindle Colorsoft, but you do not see a yellow lower band | Your unit does not show the reported visual symptom during this check. This does not prove anything about other units or future behavior. | Keep using the device and contact Amazon if a persistent change appears. |
| The model is Kindle Colorsoft and a yellow or discolored band is visible along the bottom | Your device visually matches the symptom described in public reports. The match is not a serial-number or laboratory confirmation. | Contact Amazon customer service, provide the model and purchase details, and ask which current options apply. |
| You cannot find the model name or the screen is difficult to assess | The check is inconclusive. | Tell support exactly which menu labels you see and what the display looks like. An agent can use your account and device information to assess the case. |
Contact Amazon about a possible affected device
Use Amazon’s customer-service channel for the marketplace where you bought the Kindle. Explain the issue in concrete terms: identify the model shown in Device Info, say that you see a yellow or discolored horizontal band along the bottom of the display, and state when you noticed it. Attach clear photographs if the channel permits them.

Have these details ready
- Exact model name from All Settings > Device Options > Device Info.
- Serial number and generation, if shown and requested.
- Amazon order number, retailer and purchase date.
- Country or marketplace associated with the purchase.
- A short description of when the band appears and photographs showing the full screen and lower edge.
Ask the agent to assess the individual device and state the available remedy in writing if possible. Public reports do not establish a current online eligibility checker, a universal replacement policy, or a single rule that applies in every country. Your marketplace, purchase channel, warranty status and the condition of the device may affect the options Amazon offers.
A concise message for support
You can keep the first message factual: “My Kindle is identified as [exact model] in Device Info. During normal reading, I see a persistent yellow or discolored horizontal band along the bottom of the display. I noticed it on [date]. My order number is [number], and the purchase marketplace is [country]. Please assess the device and tell me which current replacement, refund or other options apply.” This wording separates what you observed from the conclusion Amazon must make.
What Amazon said in November 2024
On November 5, 2024, Android Central reported a statement from Amazon spokesperson Jill Tornifoglio: we’re aware of a small number of reports from customers who see a yellow band along the bottom of the display. We take the quality of our products seriously—customers who notice this can reach out to our customer service team for a replacement or refund, and we’re making the appropriate adjustments to ensure that new devices will not experience this issue moving forward.
The statement appears in Android Central’s report.
That quotation is historical. It confirms how Amazon described the reports and the support path at that time; it does not set present-day eligibility, guarantee a refund, or prove that all later devices are free of the problem. Ask support to apply the terms that exist for your purchase and marketplace now.
Replacement, refund and other possible outcomes
The 2024 statement specifically mentioned a replacement or refund for customers who noticed the band. It did not publish a price schedule, a repair fee, a universal return deadline or a rule that every customer would receive the same option. Current support may instead explain a return process, exchange, warranty assessment or another resolution. Ask which option is available before sending the device anywhere and request instructions for shipping, data removal and timing.
No independent repair procedure, replacement screen part or accessory fix for this display issue is established in the cited information. Do not pay a third-party repair service on the assumption that it can apply Amazon’s reported remedy. If Amazon offers an exchange or return, follow its instructions and retain tracking or confirmation records.
Warranty information and what it does not tell you
Amazon’s general Device Warranty for Kindle E-Reader and Accessories page lists Kindle Colorsoft in its Kindle e-reader warranty information. The page is marked as updated October 1, 2026. Being listed there confirms that Colorsoft is covered by Amazon’s general Kindle warranty documentation; it does not, by itself, create a special remedy for the yellow-band reports or establish how long a particular purchase remains eligible.

- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.

Warranty coverage can depend on the marketplace, seller, purchase date and other terms shown for your order. Do not assume that the 2024 replacement-or-refund statement overrides the warranty terms currently presented by Amazon. Instead, give support the device and order details and ask which policy governs your case.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no published serial-number test for this issue
A serial number can help Amazon locate a device, but the available public information does not provide an affected serial-number range or a customer-facing checker that returns a yes-or-no result. If a support representative asks for the serial number, provide it through Amazon’s official support channel. If a website or seller claims to certify a Colorsoft solely from a serial number, that claim is not supported by the cited public statements.
Likewise, the existence of a yellow band is a symptom report, not proof that every unit in a model line has a defect. The responsible description is “my Colorsoft shows a yellow band along the bottom,” followed by a request for Amazon to assess the device.
If you are deciding whether to buy or keep a Colorsoft
For an existing owner
Perform the model-and-screen check before contacting support, save photographs and keep your order information accessible. If the band is visible, ask Amazon what replacement, refund or other remedy is currently available rather than relying on a 2024 article or an informal seller promise.
For a prospective buyer
Inspect the exact unit as soon as you receive it, within the return period and any other deadline shown for your marketplace. Confirm the model in Device Info, examine the lower edge under normal reading conditions and retain the order record. A later production date is not, by itself, a guarantee that a device cannot show the symptom; the available statement says Amazon was making adjustments, but it does not publish a defect-free serial range or a continuing guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a device bought in another country
Use the Amazon marketplace tied to the purchase and ask about that marketplace’s support and return terms. Amazon’s identification guidance notes that Kindle generations have not all been offered in every marketplace, so model names, menus and available remedies may differ by region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not call the device defective solely because its model is Colorsoft; the public reports describe a symptom seen on some units.
- Do not treat a photograph, a single page, or a change visible only at an unusual angle as conclusive proof.
- Do not open the Kindle or attempt a screen replacement. The available information does not establish an independent repair procedure or replacement-part remedy for this issue, and opening the device could complicate a support or warranty claim.
- Do not assume that Amazon’s November 2024 wording is still the exact policy in your country. Confirm current terms with customer service.
A concise checklist
- Swipe down and choose All Settings.
- Open Device Options, then Device Info.
- Confirm whether the model is Kindle Colorsoft or Colorsoft Signature Edition.
- Inspect the entire lower edge during normal reading for a persistent yellow or discolored horizontal band.
- Photograph the symptom and record the serial number, purchase details and marketplace.
- Contact Amazon support and ask for an assessment and the remedy currently available for that device.
The key distinction is between a visual match and an official determination. A Colorsoft with a persistent yellow band fits the symptom Amazon acknowledged in 2024, so it is appropriate to contact support. Only Amazon can confirm the current eligibility and resolution for your particular Kindle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Kindle models were linked to the yellow-band reports?
The reports concerned some Kindle Colorsoft devices, including the Colorsoft Signature Edition launched in October 2024. The information does not establish that every Colorsoft or any other Kindle generation is affected.
Where do I find my Kindle’s model and serial number?
Swipe down from the top, choose All Settings, open Device Options and select Device Info. Supported devices show model information there; the serial number and generation may also be displayed.
What exactly should I look for on the screen?
Look for a persistent yellow or otherwise discolored horizontal band along the bottom edge during ordinary reading. Check more than one page and do not mistake page artwork or a change visible only at an unusual angle for the reported symptom.
Does a yellow band prove my Kindle has a confirmed defect?
No. It is a visual match to the symptom described in public reports, not a laboratory or serial-number diagnosis. Amazon support must assess the individual device.
Is there an Amazon serial-number checker?
No customer-facing checker or affected serial-number range is established in the cited information. A serial number can help support locate your device record, but it does not independently certify a defect.
Will Amazon replace or refund my Colorsoft?
Amazon’s November 5, 2024 statement said customers who noticed the band could contact customer service for a replacement or refund. That historical statement does not guarantee current eligibility; ask the marketplace where you bought the Kindle what options apply now.
Does Amazon’s warranty page guarantee a special remedy?
No. The general warranty page lists Kindle Colorsoft, but that listing alone does not create a defect-specific remedy or establish the eligibility period for your purchase.
How much does a repair or replacement screen cost?
The cited information gives no repair price, replacement-part price or independent repair process. Contact Amazon before paying a third party or sending the device for service.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the model in All Settings > Device Options > Device Info, inspect the lower edge for a persistent yellow band, document what you see and contact Amazon. The November 2024 replacement-or-refund statement is historical; Amazon must confirm the current remedy and eligibility for your device, purchase and marketplace.
