Open Settings > General > About and read Model Name. Apple says every iPhone 8 or later works with Qi-certified wireless chargers. MagSafe is narrower: compare your exact model with Apple’s current MagSafe compatibility list, because Qi support alone does not prove that an iPhone has MagSafe magnets or MagSafe charging performance.
Start with the exact iPhone model
Wireless-charging compatibility follows the iPhone model, not just the iOS version, storage capacity or the age of the battery. Identify the phone before choosing a pad, stand or magnetic charger.

Find the model name in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Read the value beside Model Name.
The model name is normally the clearest result to use when checking a charger. If a support page or seller asks for the model number instead, tap the part number beside Model Number. Apple says that tapping this field reveals the model number. If the name or number is still unclear, use Apple’s iPhone model-identification guidance rather than guessing from the phone’s appearance.

Why the model number can matter
Names such as “iPhone 11” or “iPhone 15” identify a family, while a model number can distinguish regional variants. Wireless-charging eligibility is generally shared within an iPhone family, but the model name gives you a clean starting point for Apple’s compatibility list. Record the result exactly, including a suffix such as Pro, Pro Max, mini, Plus, e or Air.

Check whether the iPhone supports Qi wireless charging
Apple’s wireless-charging guidance states: “You need an iPhone 8 or later.” That is the practical cutoff for Qi-certified wireless charging in Apple’s instructions. Qi is an open, universal wireless-charging standard created by the Wireless Power Consortium.
| Result in About | Qi conclusion | What to buy or use |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 8 or later | Eligible for Qi-certified wireless charging under Apple’s stated requirement. | A Qi-certified wireless charger, with the charger maker’s specified power adapter. |
| An iPhone model earlier than iPhone 8 | It does not meet Apple’s stated iPhone requirement for Qi charging. | Do not assume a Qi pad will work; use a wired charging method or a purpose-built accessory only if its compatibility is explicitly documented. |
| Unclear model name | Eligibility cannot be confirmed yet. | Return to Settings > General > About and identify the model before purchasing. |
Qi eligibility does not specify one universal speed. The phone, charger design and power adapter all affect the result. Treat “supports Qi” as a compatibility answer, not as a promise of a particular wattage or charging time.
Check MagSafe separately
MagSafe is model-specific. Apple’s current MagSafe guide lists the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 families, iPhone Air and iPhone 17e for faster MagSafe charging. Because Apple adds models and can revise charging requirements, check the current Apple list using the exact model name you found in Settings.

|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17 family | Included in Apple’s current list for faster MagSafe charging. | Verify the particular family and charger revision on Apple’s current list, then follow the stated adapter requirements. |
| iPhone Air | Included in Apple’s current list for faster MagSafe charging. | Use the exact model name when checking the current list and accessory requirements. |
| iPhone 17e | Included in Apple’s current list for faster MagSafe charging. | Confirm the current list before buying, as compatibility and speed guidance can change. |
| iPhone 16e, iPhone 11 models, iPhone X, iPhone XS models, iPhone XR or iPhone 8 models | Apple says a MagSafe Charger can charge these Qi-compatible, non-MagSafe models, but power and charge times differ. | Expect Qi-style charging behavior rather than the full MagSafe experience. Do not infer magnetic attachment, alignment or MagSafe-level performance from the fact that the charger supplies power. |
| Any model not covered above | Not established by the general Qi rule alone. | Check Apple’s current MagSafe compatibility list for the exact model; do not use Qi support as a substitute. |
The distinction is important: an iPhone can be Qi-compatible and still lack the MagSafe feature set. Apple’s compatibility guidance specifically separates supported MagSafe models from Qi-compatible iPhones that can merely charge on a MagSafe Charger.

Qi and MagSafe: what you are actually comparing
| Comparison point | Qi wireless charging | MagSafe charging |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Apple’s stated threshold is iPhone 8 or later with a Qi-certified charger. | Depends on the exact iPhone model and Apple’s current MagSafe list. |
| Alignment | The phone must be positioned over the charger’s charging area. | Supported models are designed around MagSafe’s magnetic alignment; a Qi-only model should not be assumed to attach or align in the same way. |
| Charging performance | Varies by iPhone, charger and adapter; Qi support alone does not establish a speed. | Apple identifies MagSafe and Qi2-certified chargers as options for faster wireless charging, but the exact result depends on the model and charger. |
| Non-MagSafe iPhone on a MagSafe Charger | Some Qi-compatible models can receive power. | Apple warns that power and charge times differ from those of supported MagSafe models. |
| What to verify before purchase | Qi certification, phone eligibility and the charger manufacturer’s adapter guidance. | Exact model eligibility, magnetic behavior, charging performance and the required power adapter. |
Confirm charging with the hardware you have
Compatibility lists tell you what should work; a brief charging test confirms that the phone, pad and adapter are communicating correctly.
- Connect the wireless charger to power. Use the power adapter or power source specified by the charger maker.
- Place the iPhone face up in the center of the charging surface. For a supported MagSafe model, position it so the magnetic connection seats naturally.
- Wait for the charging indicator. Apple’s Qi instructions say a battery charging icon appears when the phone is properly aligned and charging.
- Leave the phone in place for a few minutes and check that the battery percentage is increasing. A single icon confirms detection; it does not establish a maximum speed.
If the icon does not appear, lift the phone, reconnect power to the charger, and center the phone again. Check the charger maker’s adapter guidance before changing power supplies. A charger that is underpowered or connected incorrectly can produce a different result from the same pad used with its specified adapter.
Understand speed, adapters and the Qi2 option
There is no single “wireless charging speed” for all iPhones. Apple’s guidance ties performance to the iPhone model and the charger. A MagSafe-compatible iPhone and a Qi-certified pad may both charge successfully while taking different amounts of time.
Do not choose by wattage alone
A number printed on a charger is not a guarantee that your iPhone will accept that power. The phone, charging standard, charger revision and adapter must all support the claimed behavior. The available guidance does not establish one wattage that applies to every iPhone, so avoid treating a generic wattage label as a compatibility test.

When faster wireless charging matters
Apple identifies MagSafe and Qi2-certified chargers as options for faster wireless charging in its current speed guidance. That statement still requires a model-by-model check. If your iPhone appears only in Apple’s Qi guidance, select a Qi-certified charger for basic wireless charging rather than paying for MagSafe-specific performance you cannot use.
Follow the adapter requirement
The charging puck or pad is only one part of the system. Read the charger manufacturer’s instructions for the required adapter and cable, then use that combination during your test. If Apple’s current compatibility page specifies an adapter condition for a particular MagSafe setup, follow that condition exactly.
Use this decision process before buying
- Identify the phone. Record Model Name from Settings > General > About. Capture the model number too if the name is ambiguous.
- Apply the Qi cutoff. If it is an iPhone 8 or later, a Qi-certified charger is within Apple’s stated compatibility range.
- Check MagSafe independently. Search Apple’s current MagSafe compatibility list for the exact model and family.
- Decide whether magnets are necessary. Choose MagSafe only if your model is listed and you need magnetic alignment or the faster performance Apple associates with supported setups.
- Check the power path. Confirm the charger’s certification and the adapter requirement before ordering.
- Run the alignment test. Power the charger, place the phone face up at the center, and verify the charging icon.
This process prevents the most common purchasing error: seeing “wireless charging” in a specification and assuming it means MagSafe. Wireless charging is the broader Qi capability; MagSafe is a separate, model-dependent feature.
Examples that clarify the difference
An iPhone 11
An iPhone 11 meets Apple’s Qi-era requirement and can charge wirelessly. Apple also lists iPhone 11 models among Qi-compatible, non-MagSafe devices that can receive power from a MagSafe Charger, with different power and charge times. Select a Qi-certified charger for ordinary wireless charging; do not expect the same MagSafe behavior as a supported model.
Rank #4
- The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to compatible iPhone models. The MagSafe Charger provides faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W power adapter.
- The MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2.2 and Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
- Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.
An iPhone 8
An iPhone 8 is at the beginning of Apple’s stated Qi range. It can use a Qi-certified charger, and Apple includes iPhone 8 models among the Qi-compatible devices that can charge on a MagSafe Charger. That compatibility does not turn the phone into a MagSafe model.
An iPhone 15
An iPhone 15 family model appears in Apple’s current list for faster MagSafe charging. Confirm the exact variant and the charger’s adapter requirements on the current Apple page before buying, then test by placing the phone on the powered charger and checking for the charging indicator.
An iPhone 16e
Apple identifies iPhone 16e as a Qi-compatible, non-MagSafe model that can charge on a MagSafe Charger, while noting different power and charge times. Treat it as a Qi phone for purchasing decisions unless Apple’s current model-specific guidance says otherwise.
Troubleshoot a phone that does not charge
No battery charging icon
- Confirm that the charger is connected to power and that its indicator, if it has one, is active.
- Use the charger maker’s specified adapter and cable.
- Place the iPhone face up at the center of the pad, then wait briefly.
- Recheck the model in Settings > General > About and confirm that it meets the Qi threshold or the MagSafe list.
The phone charges but more slowly than expected
- Do not infer a speed from Qi eligibility alone.
- Verify whether the iPhone is a supported MagSafe model or a Qi-compatible model using a MagSafe Charger without full MagSafe performance.
- Check the exact charger revision and adapter guidance; Apple’s speed information is model- and charger-dependent.
The phone moves or will not stay aligned
Charging success and magnetic attachment are different questions. A Qi-compatible iPhone may receive power from a MagSafe Charger without delivering the magnetic alignment expected from a supported MagSafe model. If attachment is essential, return to Apple’s model-specific MagSafe list instead of relying on the charging icon alone.
Recheck Apple’s list when you upgrade
Compatibility pages are tied to Apple’s current product lineup. New iPhone families, revised charger hardware and updated speed requirements can change what is listed. Before buying a new charger—or after replacing an iPhone—repeat the model lookup and compare it with Apple’s latest MagSafe guidance. Keep the Qi result and the MagSafe result separate in your notes: the first answers whether the phone can use a Qi-certified charger, while the second answers whether it is a supported MagSafe model.
