Use two separate checks. First, open Settings > General > About and read Carrier Lock: “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. Second, submit the phone’s IMEI to Xfinity Mobile’s BYOD compatibility checker. The lock message tells you whether another carrier restricts the phone; the IMEI result tells you whether that specific device can use Xfinity Mobile’s network and activation process.
An unlocked iPhone is not automatically compatible, and a compatible iPhone may still need to be unlocked before activation. Check both before moving your number, trading in your old phone, or purchasing a plan.

What the two checks actually tell you
“Unlocked” and “compatible” describe different properties. Carrier locking is a restriction imposed by a carrier. A locked iPhone may accept only that carrier’s service until the carrier removes the restriction. Compatibility is a device-specific network and activation decision. Xfinity Mobile uses the phone’s IMEI—the unique identifier for that handset or SIM slot—to determine whether it can be used on its service.

Do not infer eligibility from an iPhone model name, age, color, storage capacity, or the fact that it works with your current carrier. Xfinity evaluates the exact identifier you submit, and two apparently identical phones can produce different results because they came from different markets, carriers, or hardware configurations.

Before you start: have the phone and its identifiers ready
Perform both checks on the actual iPhone you intend to activate. A box label, seller’s listing, or a different phone’s IMEI cannot establish eligibility for your handset. If you are buying used, ask to see the About screen in person or request a live video showing the Carrier Lock and IMEI fields. Do not rely solely on a seller’s claim that the device is unlocked.
Write down the IMEI exactly as displayed. If the phone has two IMEIs, keep both available because Xfinity may identify one as an alternate SIM-slot identifier. You can complete the lock check without a SIM card, but you need access to Settings or the dialer to retrieve the identifier.
How to check whether the iPhone is unlocked
Read the Carrier Lock field
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
- Read the message shown underneath it.
The expected unlocked message is “No SIM restrictions.” Xfinity Mobile uses that wording in its eSIM guidance. It means the iPhone is not restricted to a particular carrier and can generally accept another carrier’s service, subject to that carrier’s compatibility and activation checks.
What if “No SIM restrictions” is not shown?
If Carrier Lock shows another message, is blank, or does not appear as expected, treat the lock status as unresolved. Xfinity’s guidance is to contact Xfinity Mobile for help. If another carrier supplied or financed the iPhone, contact that carrier first and ask whether the device is unlocked and what requirements remain.
A missing or different message is not proof that the phone is permanently locked. Carrier databases, a recent payoff, an incomplete software update, or an unusual device configuration can require the carrier to finish processing the unlock. Confirm the status again after the carrier says the request is complete.
Lock status does not test the network
The Carrier Lock field reports only the restriction status. It does not certify that the iPhone supports Xfinity Mobile’s network, software requirements, eSIM pathway, or all available features. Continue to the IMEI check even when the screen says “No SIM restrictions.”

Xfinity’s checker uses the IMEI, not just the model designation. You can retrieve it directly from the iPhone in either of these ways:

- Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. The IMEI appears on screen without placing a call.
Copy the number exactly. Avoid adding spaces, punctuation, or a serial number in its place. If the iPhone displays more than one IMEI, note each identifier. Dual-SIM and eSIM-capable models can have separate identifiers for different SIM slots, and the checker may ask you to try an alternate IMEI.

Keep the IMEI private
An IMEI identifies a specific handset. Enter it only in Xfinity’s official BYOD checker or provide it to an authorized support representative when necessary. Do not publish it in a forum, screenshot, or social-media post. The IMEI is not your phone number, Apple Account password, or SIM card number, but it is still device information that should not be shared casually.
Run Xfinity Mobile’s compatibility check
- Open Xfinity Mobile’s BYOD compatibility checker.
- Choose the option for bringing your own phone, if prompted.
- Enter the iPhone’s IMEI from Settings > General > About or from *#06#.
- Submit the check and read the exact result, including any note about locking, eSIM, alternate IMEIs, or limited features.
The checker is the authoritative answer for that device at the time you run it. A result can change if Xfinity updates its eligibility rules or if you accidentally submit a different identifier, so retain the IMEI and the result while you complete activation.
When the checker requests another IMEI
Some iPhones expose more than one SIM-slot identifier. Xfinity may report that the first IMEI is not compatible with eSIM but that an alternate IMEI is available. Follow the checker’s instruction and submit the alternate identifier shown in the iPhone’s About screen. Do not invent a number or substitute the serial number.

How to interpret every Xfinity result

Compatibility and lock status can appear together. For example, “compatible but locked” means the phone passes the network test but still needs the current carrier to remove its restriction. Conversely, “incompatible” means an unlock alone will not make the device eligible.
What “limited features” means for your decision
A limited-features result is not the same as a normal compatible result. Xfinity is warning that some functions may not be available or fully supported on that device. Read the explanation attached to the result and compare it with how you use your phone. If reliable calling, messaging, mobile data, or another service is essential, do not assume it will work merely because the checker allows activation.
Save a screenshot or note of the exact wording. “Limited features” is a qualification tied to the submitted device, and a general statement that an iPhone model works on Xfinity cannot override it. Ask Xfinity support for clarification before starting service if the explanation does not identify the affected functions.
What to do if the iPhone is locked
Contact the carrier that applied the lock
The carrier that locked the iPhone controls the unlock process. Requirements differ among carriers, so do not assume that Xfinity’s policy applies to a phone locked by another provider. Ask that carrier whether the device is paid off, whether the account is current, whether an unlock request is required, and how long processing will take.
Xfinity’s own unlock requirements
If the iPhone was supplied by Xfinity Mobile, Xfinity’s current policy, accessed October 13, 2026, says the phone must meet all of these conditions:

- It is paid in full.
- The account has no past-due balance.
- The phone has not been reported lost or stolen and is not involved in fraud.
Xfinity says an eligible phone usually unlocks automatically within 48 hours after payoff. Those are carrier policy and process figures, not a guarantee for every account or a statistic about iPhone owners.
How Apple phones receive an Xfinity unlock
For Apple phones, Xfinity says the unlock is delivered through an update while the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data; you do not enter an unlock code. Keep the phone powered on and connected, then return to Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock again. The desired result remains “No SIM restrictions.”
Update iOS before activation
Once the carrier confirms the unlock, install any available iOS update before beginning Xfinity activation. Xfinity recommends current software as part of its BYOD process. Updating can also ensure that the phone receives the carrier configuration needed for activation, but it does not turn an incompatible device into a compatible one.
eSIM versus a physical SIM
Using an eSIM does not remove or bypass a carrier lock. Lock status belongs to the iPhone and its carrier policy, not to whether you use a removable SIM card or a downloaded eSIM profile.
For an eligible BYOD iPhone, Xfinity determines whether activation can use eSIM or requires a physical SIM. A checker result mentioning an alternate IMEI can indicate that the eSIM identifier was not accepted while another SIM-slot identifier can proceed. Follow the activation path Xfinity presents rather than choosing a SIM type based only on the phone’s appearance.
Plan the activation in the right order
- Confirm the Carrier Lock field says “No SIM restrictions.” If it does not, resolve the restriction with the carrier that applied it.
- Update iOS after the unlock is processed and while the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Run the BYOD checker with the exact IMEI. If Xfinity identifies an alternate IMEI, use that identifier instead of repeatedly submitting the first one.
- Review any limited-feature warning and decide whether it meets your needs.
- Start signup and activation only after the checker provides a compatible path. Xfinity will indicate whether the device uses eSIM or a physical SIM.
This order prevents a common dead end: attempting activation with a phone that passes only one of the two independent checks.
A complete pre-activation checklist
- Carrier Lock says “No SIM restrictions.”
- The IMEI copied from the iPhone matches the number submitted to Xfinity.
- If the phone has multiple IMEIs, you have checked the alternate identifier when Xfinity requested it.
- The checker result says Compatible or provides an alternate-IMEI path you can follow.
- You understand any limited features listed in the result.
- iOS is updated before activation.
- You know whether Xfinity will use eSIM or a physical SIM for this device.
- You have not repeatedly submitted guesses after an error or maximum-check warning.
Completing the list prevents the most common mistake: starting activation because the iPhone is unlocked while never verifying that its particular IMEI is accepted.

The phone is unlocked but Xfinity says incompatible
Recheck the IMEI for transcription errors and submit the identifier shown under Settings > General > About > IMEI. If the iPhone has two IMEIs, use the alternate one only when the checker directs you to. If the corrected result is still incompatible, unlocking cannot resolve that network-compatibility decision.

The phone is compatible but still locked
Contact the current carrier, satisfy its unlock requirements, and wait for confirmation. After processing, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular data if required, install any pending iOS update, and verify that Carrier Lock now says “No SIM restrictions.” Then return to activation.
The checker reports limited features
Do not treat limited compatibility as full compatibility. Read Xfinity’s explanation of which functions are restricted and decide whether those limitations affect calling, messaging, data, or other services you rely on. The checker’s qualification is more specific than the general word “compatible.”
The checker stops after several attempts
Xfinity says its maximum-check condition may follow three unsuccessful compatibility checks. Do not cycle through random numbers or repeatedly resubmit the same IMEI. Preserve the exact error and contact Xfinity support so a representative can determine whether the issue is an identifier problem or an account-side process limit.

Confirm that the carrier has completed the request, the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, and iOS is current. Restart the iPhone and check Settings > General > About again. If the message still does not change, ask the carrier that applied the lock to verify the device’s status; Xfinity cannot remove another carrier’s restriction.
You cannot access the About screen
Without the iPhone’s Carrier Lock field and IMEI, you cannot independently complete both checks. Ask the seller or current owner to provide access to the actual device, and verify that the displayed IMEI matches the handset being offered. A box, receipt, or screenshot from another phone is not a substitute for the live device identifier.

Retail listings and model names do not capture every eligibility factor. Carrier history, regional hardware, SIM-slot configuration, software state, and an individual device’s IMEI can affect the result. Xfinity’s checker is designed to evaluate those device-specific details. Use a model lookup only as background information, never as a substitute for the live IMEI check.
The same principle applies to used iPhones. A seller’s statement that a phone is “unlocked” is not sufficient evidence. Inspect Carrier Lock yourself and run the IMEI through Xfinity before paying, if possible. If you cannot access the phone’s About screen or verify its IMEI, you cannot complete the two checks required for a confident decision.
