Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo find out whether an Apple device can run a new operating system, do two checks: identify the exact model, then compare it with Apple’s compatibility list for the release you want. After that, open the device’s Software Update screen to see what Apple is offering that device right now. Compatibility with a major release and immediate availability of a particular update are separate questions.
On an iPhone or iPad, use Settings > General > About to identify the device and Settings > General > Software Update to check for an installable update. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac for the model, year, chip and current macOS, then use Apple’s compatibility page and System Settings > General > Software Update. Back up before installing; for a wireless iPhone or iPad update, connect to Wi-Fi and power.

What “latest software update” can mean
People use “latest” to describe three different things:
- The newest major operating system: for example, the release identified as iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26. This is an eligibility question answered by Apple’s compatibility list.
- The newest patch within an operating-system family: a point release such as 26.0.1. Your device may support the major release but still need an intermediate update first.
- The newest update currently offered to one device: this depends on that device’s model, installed version, configuration and Apple’s staged availability. The Software Update screen answers this question.
Apple says the Software Update screen shows only updates compatible with the device. A device can therefore be eligible for a release in principle while not displaying it yet, or it may need to install an earlier version before a newer one becomes available. Treat the compatibility list as the answer to “can this model run the named release?” and Software Update as the answer to “what can this device install now?”

Step 1: Identify the exact iPhone model
Find the model in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Read the Model Name and, when needed, tap the Model Number to reveal the model identifier.
- Record the generation exactly. “iPhone 11” and “iPhone 11 Pro,” for example, are different entries, and an iPhone SE generation matters.
Do not rely only on the phone’s appearance, storage capacity or a family name shown on a case. Apple’s lists distinguish model generations and variants. If the phone cannot be opened, the original packaging, purchase record or Apple account device list may help, but confirm the result in Apple’s model information before deciding about support.
Check the iPhone’s current offer
- Return to Settings > General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Read the installed iOS version and the update card, if one appears.
- Open the details or release-notes link shown on that screen before choosing Download and Install.
This screen reports what Apple is making available to that specific iPhone at the time of the check. It does not replace the compatibility list when you are asking about a future or named major release.
Step 2: Compare the iPhone with Apple’s release list
Open Apple’s support guide for the iOS release you care about and search for the exact model name you recorded. As a current example of how the list is written, Apple’s iOS 26 guide includes iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). That example is not a promise about future releases; Apple can change the supported-model list for each major version.

Operating-system compatibility does not guarantee that every new function will appear. Apple notes that features and apps can vary by iPhone model, region, language and carrier. If your question is really about a feature such as a particular intelligence, camera or connectivity function, check that feature’s separate requirements after confirming the operating-system eligibility.

Step 3: Identify the exact iPad
Use the About screen
- Open Settings.
- Choose General > About.
- Write down the Model Name, generation, screen size where shown, and model number.
- Distinguish similarly named products. An iPad Air generation, an iPad Pro screen size and an iPad mini generation can each change eligibility.
Apple’s naming is especially important for iPad because the same family name has been sold across several generations and chip configurations. Use the complete entry rather than assuming that every iPad Air, iPad Pro or iPad mini receives the same release.
See what iPadOS offers now
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Note the installed iPadOS version at the top.
- Read any available update description and the required storage or restart notice.
- Tap Download and Install only after backing up and connecting to Wi-Fi and power.
If no update appears, that means no compatible update is being offered to the iPad at that moment; it does not, by itself, prove that the hardware is permanently excluded.
Step 4: Check iPadOS compatibility by generation
Use Apple’s compatibility page for the target iPadOS release and match the complete model entry. Apple’s iPadOS 26 guide provides examples of the level of detail to expect:
| iPad family | Models listed for iPadOS 26 in Apple’s guide |
|---|---|
| iPad Pro 12.9-inch | 3rd generation and later |
| iPad Pro 11-inch | 1st generation and later |
| iPad Air | 3rd generation and later |
| iPad | 8th generation and later, plus iPad A16 |
| iPad mini | 5th generation and later, plus iPad mini A17 Pro |
These entries illustrate why a family-level answer is unsafe. An older iPad Pro can be supported while an earlier iPad Air is not, and newer chip-specific names such as iPad A16 appear as separate entries. Always compare your recorded model with the current Apple page rather than treating this example as a permanent support policy.

Step 5: Identify the exact Mac, chip and macOS version
Use About This Mac
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Record the Mac’s model name, screen size where shown, model year and chip. Intel, M1, M2 and later Apple silicon are materially different for compatibility.
- Record the macOS name and version currently installed.
- If the compact panel omits a detail, open System Information from the same window or search Apple’s support documentation using the model identifier.
For Macs, “MacBook Pro” or “Mac mini” alone is not enough. The model year, number of Thunderbolt ports, processor generation and Apple-silicon designation can change whether a release is supported.
Check the Mac’s live update offer
- Open System Settings.
- Select General, then Software Update.
- Wait for the panel to finish checking Apple’s servers.
- Review the installed macOS version and any upgrade or update offered.
- Open More Info or the release notes if you need to distinguish a major upgrade from a security or maintenance update.
On older macOS versions, the control may be labeled System Preferences > Software Update rather than System Settings. The purpose is the same: it reports updates compatible with that Mac’s current state.
Step 6: Match the Mac to the target macOS release
Apple’s macOS compatibility page is the authoritative check for a named release. For example, Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 list includes models such as MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports), MacBook Air (M1, 2020), iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020), Mac mini (M1, 2020), Mac Studio (2022) and Mac Pro (2019), along with newer models. The distinctions in parentheses are part of the eligibility rule, not optional descriptions.
Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate upgrade page says that release supports Macs with Apple silicon and that Software Update can locate and install it when available. The page and release name are time-sensitive. The Apple pages consulted on July 30, 2026, showed macOS 27.0.1, but version numbers and supported models can change; use the live compatibility and release pages immediately before making a purchase or planning an upgrade.

| Mac detail to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Product family and model year | Two MacBook Pro or iMac generations can have different support limits. |
| Chip or processor | Apple-silicon and Intel support can diverge for the same product family. |
| Port or screen-size variant | Apple sometimes lists only a specific configuration, such as a 13-inch model with four Thunderbolt 3 ports. |
| Installed macOS version | An intermediate update may be required before a later upgrade is offered. |
Prepare safely before installing
Back up first
Apple recommends making a backup before installing software. On iPhone and iPad, use your normal iCloud or computer backup workflow and confirm that the backup has completed. On Mac, use Time Machine or another verified backup method. A backup protects personal data if an installation is interrupted or an app needs to be restored.
Meet the wireless-update requirements
- Connect an iPhone or iPad to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Plug the device into power, particularly for a large major release.
- Make enough free storage available for the download and temporary installation files.
- Keep the device connected until the restart and verification steps finish.
A Mac should also be connected to power when practical, especially a notebook. Do not close a MacBook lid or disconnect power during the installation unless the on-screen instructions explicitly allow it.
What to do when an expected update is missing
Confirm the model entry again
Reopen About or About This Mac and compare the exact generation, year and chip with Apple’s current list. A product-family match is not sufficient. Check for a similarly named model that has a different generation or port configuration.
Install an intermediate release
Some devices must install an earlier update before a newer one appears. Apply the version currently offered, restart if requested, and check Software Update again. Apple’s compatibility guidance explains that the device may need this sequence rather than jumping directly to the newest release.
Best Value
Use Apple’s computer-based route for iPhone or iPad
If a compatible wireless update does not appear or will not complete, Apple documents updating an iPhone or iPad through a computer. Back up first, connect the device with a suitable cable, and use the operating system’s device-management screen to check for an update. Follow the on-screen recovery instructions if the device reports an error; do not disconnect it while an update or restore is in progress.
Check timing and network conditions
Software Update availability is a point-in-time result. Retry after confirming Wi-Fi, sufficient storage, a charged battery and Apple’s current service status. A missing card is not evidence of permanent incompatibility until the model has been checked against the target release list and any required earlier version has been installed.
Separate operating-system support from feature support
If the operating system installs but a promised feature is absent, consult Apple’s requirements for that feature. Model, region, language and carrier restrictions can apply even when the base operating system is supported.

A quick decision framework
- Need to know whether a named major release supports the hardware? Identify the exact model, generation, year and chip, then compare it with Apple’s compatibility page.
- Need to know what can be installed today? Open Software Update on the device and read the offered version.
- Nothing is offered? Verify the model entry, install any available intermediate release, check storage and connectivity, and use Apple’s computer-update method for iPhone or iPad if necessary.
- Concerned about one feature? Check the feature’s separate model, region, language and carrier requirements.
Examples of correct and incorrect checks
| Situation | Reliable approach | Unreliable shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| An iPhone owner asks about iOS 26 | Read Model Name in About, then find that exact entry in Apple’s iOS 26 list. | Assume every iPhone with a similar design receives iOS 26. |
| An iPad owner sees no update | Compare the exact generation with Apple’s iPadOS list, install any offered earlier version, and recheck. | Conclude immediately that the iPad can never update. |
| A MacBook Pro owner asks about a new macOS | Record year, screen size, ports and chip, then compare the complete Mac model entry. | Check only the words “MacBook Pro.” |
| A user wants a newly announced feature | Verify the operating system and then the feature-specific requirements. | Treat OS compatibility as a guarantee that every feature is present. |
Keep the result current
Compatibility lists, release names and update offers change. Apple’s software-deployment documentation records release dates and availability windows; its support page was dated July 30, 2026. Use the live Apple compatibility page and the device’s own Software Update screen immediately before an upgrade decision, especially when the question concerns a newly announced release or a second-hand device.
The dependable method remains the same across all three platforms: capture the exact hardware identity, check the named release’s official model list, and then let Software Update report the version currently available to that individual device.
