How to Check Whether Your Internet Traffic Uses a Subsea Cable Route

You cannot identify an undersea cable from a normal IP address alone. You can, however, make a defensible estimate: run a traceroute from your own connection, compare it with measurements from other networks, inspect the relevant BGP paths, map the observed links with a cross-layer tool such as Nautilus, and check whether submarine systems connect the indicated landing regions. The result is a time- and vantage-specific inference, not proof that a carrier sent your exact packets through one named cable.

What you can—and cannot—learn

A submarine cable is physical infrastructure. Internet diagnostic tools mostly expose logical information: responding routers, autonomous systems (ASes), and routing announcements. The job is therefore to connect several layers of evidence without treating one layer as a direct cable trace.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Method Vantage point What it measures or displays What it cannot establish
Traceroute Your device and network Responding IP routers along the path to a destination at the measurement time The ocean segment or the name of a cable; silent routers can make the path incomplete
Remote traceroute or looking glass A router operated by another network That router’s route toward the destination Your home connection’s route; a remote result must not be substituted for a local one
BGP route data A selected collector, peer, or looking-glass router Network-level announcements and AS paths observed from that vantage The per-packet forwarding path or the physical cable carrying a flow
Cross-layer mapping A mapping service using network and infrastructure datasets Proposed links between measured IP hops and terrestrial or submarine infrastructure, often with confidence scores Direct observation inside a named cable
Cable map Geographic and infrastructure reference Known cable systems, landing points, service dates, and status Confirmation that your individual connection used a drawn line

The strongest public conclusion combines these layers and states the source network, approximate location, destination, UTC time, tools, and uncertainty.

A repeatable six-stage check

1. Trace the destination from your own connection

Start with the actual hostname or service you care about, not a nearby speed-test server. Resolve the hostname and record the returned IP address, because a service can use different addresses for different users or sessions.

  1. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run tracert example.com, replacing the hostname with your target.
  2. On macOS or Linux, open Terminal and run traceroute example.com. If the destination supports both address families, make separate IPv4 and IPv6 measurements when your operating system provides those options.
  3. Let the command finish, or stop it only after enough hops have appeared to identify the destination-side network. Save the complete output as text rather than relying on a screenshot.

Record the target hostname, resolved IP, your ISP or organization, approximate source location, local time converted to UTC, and the exact start time. A traceroute is valid only for that source, destination, network state, and moment. Repeating it at another time can produce a different path.

2. Read the local output as a network path, not a cable diagram

Each numbered line represents probes sent with a progressively larger hop limit. A responding router may show an IP address, a reverse-DNS name, and round-trip times. Names containing a city or an exchange are clues, not surveyed coordinates; providers can use naming conventions that are approximate or intentionally vague.

  • An asterisk or a line of timeouts means that a hop did not answer the probe. Firewalls, rate limiting, and routers configured not to reveal themselves are common. It does not automatically mean packets stopped there.
  • Several addresses on one line can represent different probe replies or load-balanced paths. Preserve all of them.
  • Private addresses near the beginning normally describe your local network or provider edge. They do not identify the long-haul route.
  • The final responding address may be a service edge, cache, or security gateway rather than the application’s physical server.

Do not infer an ocean crossing merely from a sudden jump in latency or from a hostname that looks coastal. Those observations can support a hypothesis, but they do not identify a cable.

3. Compare with a remote vantage point

A remote traceroute answers a different question: how a particular router in another network reaches the same destination. Use an operator’s looking glass or a public remote-traceroute service that identifies its measurement location. RFC 8522 documents looking-glass command conventions, including traceroute and route lookup: RFC 8522.

Run the remote test from a site whose country, city, or network is stated. Capture the router identity, peer or collector information, query time, destination IP, and complete output. The RIPE NCC Looking Glass API documents route observations from RIPE RIS collectors, including collector location and peer context; its data is described as near real time but subject to processing delay: RIPE NCC Looking Glass API documentation.

Compare broad structure rather than demanding identical hops. Different access providers can choose different transit networks, and a remote route may enter the destination region from a completely different direction. Never combine your forward traceroute with a remote reverse traceroute and call the result one end-to-end path.

4. Inspect BGP observations

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) information helps explain why a route is plausible at the network layer. Look up the destination prefix and note the AS path reported by a named collector, peer, or looking glass. A multi-vantage visualization such as bgpmap.net can help show that different observers see different paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BGP is a routing-table view. It describes announcements and the path attributes observed by particular routers; it is not a packet capture and does not reveal the cable used by each flow. State exactly which collector or peer produced the observation and when it was retrieved. If your traceroute crosses an AS that does not appear in a selected BGP view, that is not by itself a contradiction: the collector may have a different route, a different view of the prefix, or no current observation.

5. Submit the traceroute to a cross-layer mapper

Nautilus is a University of California, Irvine project that accepts traceroute data and attempts to map IP links to terrestrial and submarine infrastructure: Nautilus. Upload or enter the saved traceroute according to its current interface, then preserve the proposed links, candidate cable names, landing regions, and every confidence value it reports.

Interpret a Nautilus result as a model. A confidence score expresses how well the available network and infrastructure data support a proposed association; it is not a carrier attestation and does not show packets inside a cable. Missing hops, address changes, stale geolocation, and incomplete cable datasets can all reduce or distort the mapping.

6. Check physical plausibility on a cable map

Use a cable map to test whether the inferred regions are physically connected by a candidate system. TeleGeography’s Submarine Cable FAQs describes searches by cable system, country, landing point, service year, and status. The ITU Broadband Map includes submarine-cable and transmission-network layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that the candidate cable’s landing points are compatible with the regions suggested by your local and remote measurements. Treat the line on the map as context, not a GPS track. TeleGeography’s FAQ explicitly states: “No. The cable routes on our map are stylized and do not reflect the precise geolocation of systems.” A map can establish that a route is plausible; it cannot establish that your individual flow used that displayed line.

How to combine the evidence

Make the conclusion only after you have a local measurement, at least one independent network view when available, and a physical plausibility check. The following sequence keeps each claim tied to the evidence that supports it.

  1. Identify the destination IP and the ASes visible in your own traceroute.
  2. Note where the path appears to leave the source region and where it enters the destination region. Use router names only as hints.
  3. Compare the broad direction with one or more remote traceroutes or looking-glass results, documenting each vantage separately.
  4. Check the destination prefix’s BGP path and collector context. Treat agreement as corroboration at the network layer, not proof of a physical segment.
  5. Review Nautilus’s proposed links and confidence values. Keep the original traceroute beside the mapping output.
  6. Use TeleGeography or the ITU map to see whether candidate cable systems and landing points connect the indicated regions and were in service or planned during the relevant period.
  7. Write a time-stamped conclusion using calibrated language: “likely,” “consistent with,” or “not established.”

For example, several independent observations that point from a European source network to a North American destination, a mapper that proposes a transatlantic system with moderate or high confidence, and a cable map showing compatible landing points make a subsea crossing plausible. They still do not prove that every packet in the test used that cable, that the route remained unchanged after the measurement, or that a similarly named cable was involved.

Comparing the methods before you choose one

Question you need answered Best first method Evidence level Important qualification
What path does my connection take right now? Local traceroute Direct measurement of responding IP hops Limited to your source, destination, protocol behavior, and measurement time; non-responding routers may be absent
Could another network take a different path? Remote traceroute or looking glass Direct measurement from the selected remote router It describes that router, not your household or office connection
Which networks announce the destination? BGP lookup or map Network-level observation Collector and peer choice affect the result; BGP does not identify a cable
Which physical systems fit the observed regions? Nautilus plus a cable map Inferred cross-layer association plus geographic context Confidence depends on datasets and inference; map lines are stylized

What can make a result look contradictory?

Load balancing and route changes

Routers can distribute probes or flows over multiple next hops. Providers also change transit choices, maintenance paths, and peering arrangements. Two traceroutes run minutes apart can differ, and two users in the same city can receive different routes. Save every run instead of selecting the one that best fits a preferred cable.

Asymmetric paths

The forward path from you to a destination can differ from the return path. A remote reverse test is valuable context, but it is not evidence about the outbound path unless the measurement explicitly covers that direction. Report directions separately.

Missing or misleading geolocation

IP geolocation databases and reverse-DNS names may identify a registration address, a headquarters, or a naming convention rather than the router’s physical site. Use them to form a regional hypothesis and corroborate it with AS information, multiple vantage points, and landing-point data.

Encrypted traffic and virtual networks

Encryption does not hide the IP route from routers, so traceroute to the visible endpoint can still show the network path to that endpoint. A VPN, corporate tunnel, proxy, or cloud relay changes the endpoint you are tracing: the relevant subsea crossing may be between you and the tunnel server, between the tunnel server and the destination, or both. Run measurements with the tunnel enabled and disabled, labeling each condition.

Anycast, content delivery, and service changes

A global service can resolve to a nearby edge in one test and a different edge later. Record the resolved address and destination hostname for every measurement. Tracing a provider’s edge does not necessarily trace the path to the service’s origin.

Preserve an evidence packet that another person can reproduce

Keep a plain-text or archival record containing:

  • Target hostname, resolved IP address, and whether IPv4 or IPv6 was used.
  • Source network name, approximate source location, and whether a VPN, proxy, or corporate tunnel was active.
  • UTC start time and local time, plus the operating system and traceroute command.
  • Unedited local traceroute output, including timeout lines and all responding addresses.
  • Remote vantage-point name, router or collector identity, peer context, UTC query time, and complete remote output.
  • BGP prefix, AS path, collector or looking-glass source, and retrieval time.
  • Nautilus input and output, proposed links, cable names, and confidence values.
  • Candidate cable systems, landing points, service status or year, map source, and the exact retrieval date or data version where shown.

Do not edit out inconvenient hops. An incomplete result is still useful when its limitations are visible.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely reason What to do
The command returns only a few hops The destination or an intermediate firewall suppresses probes Try the same destination from a documented remote vantage point and report the missing section; do not invent the unseen path
Many rows show asterisks Rate limiting or non-responsive routers Preserve the output, repeat at a reasonable interval, and treat the path as partial
Local and remote routes disagree Different networks, peers, policies, or times Label each vantage and compare regional direction rather than forcing one combined route
BGP shows an AS absent from traceroute Control-plane and forwarding-plane views differ, or the collector sees another path Check the collector, peer, prefix, and timestamp; do not treat the discrepancy as cable evidence
Nautilus names several cables Multiple physical systems fit the available links Keep all candidates, include confidence values, and use landing-point geography to narrow plausibility without claiming certainty
A map line appears to cross the expected ocean The map is an infrastructure overview Use it to confirm compatible landing regions only; displayed geometry is stylized
The result changes after enabling a VPN The tunnel moved the measurement endpoint Record separate tests and identify which leg each test actually measures

How to state the finding responsibly

A useful report names the measurement rather than presenting a universal answer. Use a sentence such as:

“A traceroute from the recorded source network and location to the recorded destination at the recorded UTC time, interpreted with the selected mapping tool and checked against the selected cable map, is consistent with traffic crossing the candidate cable or region. This is an inference from public routing and infrastructure data, not confirmation from the carrier that this exact flow used that cable.”

Replace each bracketed element with the recorded facts in your evidence packet. If tools disagree, say so directly and describe the result as “not established.” If a candidate is supported only by a stylized map and a single incomplete traceroute, use “possible” rather than “likely.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a global cable count does not answer your question

TeleGeography tracks more than 600 active and planned submarine cable systems in 2026. That count changes as systems enter service or are decommissioned, and it describes the tracked infrastructure universe—not the proportion of any particular user’s traffic that travels by subsea cable. Your route depends on the destination, access provider, transit policy, peering, maintenance state, and measurement time. The count is useful context for understanding how many alternatives may exist, not evidence for a specific connection.

Practical checklist

  • Trace the real destination from your own network.
  • Save the hostname, resolved address, command, output, source location, and UTC time.
  • Obtain at least one separately identified remote route when possible.
  • Check BGP from a named collector or peer and preserve its timestamp.
  • Run the traceroute through Nautilus and retain proposed links and confidence values.
  • Verify candidate landing regions and service status on a cable map.
  • Keep forward and reverse paths separate.
  • Describe the outcome as an inference unless an operator independently confirms the physical path.
