You can’t prove a home network is completely safe with one check, but you can reduce common risks. Start by checking your Wi-Fi encryption, changing both router passwords, and confirming that the router and connected devices receive updates. Then review features that expose router access or make joining the network easier, and use a guest network for visitors and suitable smart devices.
Check which Wi-Fi encryption your router uses
Open your router’s wireless or Wi-Fi security settings and look for WPA3 Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies WPA3 as the newer, preferred option; WPA2 Personal is also an acceptable choice in its home Wi-Fi security guidance. WPA and WEP are outdated and insecure.

If WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal is not available, check for a router software update first. If the router still offers only WPA or WEP, consider replacing it. A replacement is not automatically necessary for every household: the relevant issue is whether the current router can use an acceptable encryption mode and still receives security updates.
Replace both default passwords
Your Wi-Fi password and router administrator password do different jobs. The Wi-Fi password controls who can join the network; the administrator password controls router settings. Change both defaults to unique passwords, and don’t reuse the same password for them.

Change the default network name as well. Avoid including your name, address, or router brand in the network name or credentials. Protecting administrator access matters because someone who can change router settings may undo other safeguards.
Check router updates and ongoing support
Look for firmware or software updates through the router’s settings or the manufacturer’s support information, and sign up for update notices if the manufacturer offers them. Menus and update procedures vary by router and internet service provider.

Review router features that can expose access
The FTC recommends turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP when you do not need them. Find these options in the router’s settings, noting that their names and locations differ between models.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Remote management allows router controls to be reached over the internet. Turn it off if you do not need to administer the router remotely.
- WPS can let a device join Wi-Fi without entering the network password. Disable it if you do not rely on that connection method.
- UPnP lets devices find one another on the network. If a device or service depends on it, check that device’s instructions before turning it off; otherwise, disable the feature.
These features can weaken security, but their practical effect depends on your setup. Check the router and device instructions before changing a setting you rely on.
Keep visitors and suitable devices off your main Wi-Fi
Set up a guest network with its own name and password so visitors do not need your primary Wi-Fi credentials. Where the router allows it, guest devices can also be separated from devices on the main network.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
For internet-connected cameras, the FTC’s connected-device guidance suggests considering a separate network from computers and printers if your setup supports it. A separate network can limit exposure between devices, but it does not replace securing each device.
Check the firewall and devices already connected
Confirm that the router firewall is enabled if your router provides one. Then review the router’s connected-device list and look for devices you recognize. The list is a useful check, not proof that every connection is safe: labels may be unfamiliar, and device-level security still matters.

Decide whether your router needs replacing
Before replacing a router, check for available updates and ask your provider how it handles updates if it supplied the device. If you still need to choose whether to keep or replace it, assess these practical points:
- Does it support WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, rather than only WPA or WEP?
- Are security updates still available, and who installs them?
- Does it provide the guest-network and firewall controls your household needs?
- Can the devices in your home connect reliably using its supported settings?
These checks help identify whether an existing router meets basic needs; they do not establish that every router with those features is equally secure. Exact settings and support vary by model and provider.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What a home-network security check can—and cannot—tell you
Completing these checks can reduce common risks, but it cannot certify a home network as completely safe. A well-configured router does not secure a connected device that still uses weak credentials or obsolete software. Treat network security as a combination of router settings, continuing updates, and device-by-device protections.
