The reliable way to check is to compare your instance’s complete GitLab version and edition with the affected and fixed-version ranges in the advisory for the specific vulnerability. First identify whether you run GitLab Self-Managed, GitLab Dedicated, or GitLab.com; then record the full version (including patch number) and edition, read the advisory’s conditions, and compare them exactly. GitLab’s built-in version check can provide a useful warning, but it is a general update signal rather than proof that a particular CVE applies.
If the comparison shows that your installation is affected, use the advisory’s remediation guidance. For Self-Managed installations, plan the upgrade path, required stops, and target patch before changing the system.

The four-step check
- Identify the GitLab offering, edition, and complete installed version.
- Open the advisory for the exact vulnerability and copy its affected and fixed ranges.
- Compare your full version against every range, including edition, deployment, and configuration conditions.
- If it is affected, follow the advisory and the appropriate upgrade or hosting instructions.
The optional version-check indicator is useful as an additional alert. It does not replace the issue-specific comparison because a general “vulnerable” or “update available” signal does not explain which advisory applies or which condition triggered it.

Release responsibility and the steps you can take depend on where GitLab runs. Record the offering before interpreting an advisory.

Do not treat “GitLab” as a single deployment for this purpose. An advisory can distinguish Self-Managed, Dedicated, and GitLab.com, and a release page may contain hosting-specific instructions.
Step 1: Find the exact installed version and edition
Self-Managed or Dedicated
- Sign in with an account that can view the Help page.
- At the bottom of the left sidebar, select Help, then select Help again if the menu presents that choice.
- Read the version shown at the top of the page.
- Record the complete value, including major, minor, and patch components. Also record the edition, such as CE or EE, and whether the environment is Self-Managed or Dedicated.
GitLab documents this location in Find the GitLab version. A major version alone is not enough. Two installations with the same major version can be on different minor or patch releases, and an advisory can fix one supported branch while leaving another branch subject to a different fixed release.

- Open https://gitlab.com/help.
- Read and record the displayed version.
- Record that the service is GitLab.com rather than Self-Managed or Dedicated; the hosting distinction affects the remediation instructions.
Create a version record before comparing
Copy the value rather than retyping it. A small record prevents a common error in which an administrator compares the advisory with a remembered major version or with the version on a different environment.

Step 2: Read the advisory for the exact vulnerability
Open the security advisory identified by the issue, CVE, or release notice. Do not substitute an unrelated patch announcement simply because it has a newer-looking number. The advisory is the authority for three questions: which versions are affected, which releases contain the fix, and under what edition, deployment, or configuration conditions the statement applies.
Interpret the affected-version wording literally
Advisories often use boundary language such as “all versions from … before ….” That wording defines a range with a lower starting point and an exclusive upper boundary. A version at or above the stated fixed release is not automatically affected by that advisory, while a version below it may be. Preserve the boundary exactly when comparing.

Some advisories list several release branches. A fixed release on one supported branch does not mean every older branch is fixed. Compare your version with the range for its own branch, and check whether the advisory supplies a separate fixed release for that branch.
Check edition, deployment, and configuration conditions
- Look for explicit CE or EE limitations.
- Check whether the statement applies to Self-Managed, Dedicated, GitLab.com, or only one of them.
- Read any feature, permission, authentication, or configuration prerequisite.
- If the release notes do not name a deployment type, GitLab may intend the statement to cover all deployment types; confirm the wording on the advisory page rather than assuming that a hosting exception exists.
The patch-release documentation illustrates why this context matters. GitLab’s page for the releases titled 19.2.2, 19.1.4, and 19.0.6, dated August 12, 2026, contains release-specific hosting guidance. Step 3: Compare your version with the advisory’s ranges
Place your recorded version beside each affected range and fixed release. Compare major, minor, and patch components in order. Do not compare strings alphabetically and do not drop a trailing patch component.
- Start with the edition and offering. If the advisory excludes your edition or deployment, document that result and continue to check any other stated conditions.
- Find the branch that contains your installed version.
- Apply the advisory’s lower and upper boundaries exactly, paying attention to words such as before, through, from, and including.
- Check the named fixed release for that same branch. A different branch’s fix is not a substitute unless the advisory explicitly says so.
- Evaluate any configuration prerequisite. A version match without the required condition may not establish applicability; a matching condition plus an affected version does.
- Write down the conclusion, the advisory URL, and the fixed target identified by the advisory so another administrator can audit the decision.

If any row is “unclear,” do not turn an assumption into a green light. Resolve the ambiguity from the advisory’s wording, the release notes, or your GitLab administrator’s deployment records.
Step 4: Use GitLab’s built-in version check as a secondary signal
GitLab can display a version-check status for authenticated users on Help pages and in Admin pages when the check is enabled. The documented statuses are:

The check requires access to version.gitlab.com over port 443. If that connection is blocked, the status may be unavailable or stale. Administrators can review the feature and its requirements in Usage statistics: Version check.

Offering-specific remediation
Self-Managed installations
When the advisory says your version is affected, upgrade to the fixed release recommended for your branch, subject to GitLab’s supported upgrade process. GitLab advises administrators to record their current position in the upgrade path, consult the upgrade notes, take required stops, and use the latest available patch for a minor version rather than its first patch.
Required stops depend on the versions and installation. A direct jump that appears numerically possible may not be supported. Before scheduling maintenance, verify the path from your current version to the target version and identify every intermediate stop required by the documentation. GitLab Dedicated
Do not apply Self-Managed commands or timing assumptions to Dedicated. Read the advisory’s Dedicated guidance and follow the operational process for that service. Hosted release handling can differ from an administrator-run package upgrade.

GitLab.com customers generally cannot perform an instance upgrade themselves. Read the advisory’s hosted-service statement and follow any requested customer action, such as changing a configuration or monitoring a maintenance notice. A release page may state that GitLab.com has already been patched; that statement is tied to the specific release notice and date.
For example, the August 12, 2026 patch-release page cited above stated that GitLab.com was already patched and that Dedicated customers did not need to take action for that release. Do not generalize that statement to a different vulnerability, release, or date; consult the current advisory for the issue you are checking.

You can see only a major version
Return to the documented Help location and copy the complete version from the top of the page. If your inventory system records only a major version, treat the result as incomplete until you verify the minor and patch numbers directly.
The version-check status is red, but the advisory does not seem to match
Recheck the advisory’s branch, edition, deployment, and configuration conditions. The built-in check is general; a red status is a reason to investigate, not a substitute for the advisory’s affected range.
The status is missing or does not change
Confirm that the check is enabled and that the installation can reach version.gitlab.com on port 443. A network restriction can prevent the signal from updating. Continue with the manual version-to-advisory comparison even when the status is unavailable.
Your release is not listed in the advisory
Check whether the advisory lists only supported branches or provides a range that includes your version. Then review the release notes for branch-specific fixes. Do not infer that an unlisted older release is safe merely because a newer branch has a fixed version.
The advisory does not mention a deployment type
Read the release-note wording carefully. GitLab may intend an unqualified statement to apply to all deployment types. If the wording remains ambiguous, document the uncertainty and obtain clarification before declaring the instance unaffected.
You are unsure which edition is installed
Use the edition shown in your installation’s version information and package or deployment records. Do not assume that CE and EE have identical exposure or fixes; an advisory can scope them differently.

- Identify Self-Managed, Dedicated, or GitLab.com.
- Open the documented Help page and copy the full version, or use GitLab.com’s
/helppage. - Record CE or EE and any relevant deployment or configuration condition.
- Open the advisory for the exact vulnerability.
- Copy every affected range and fixed release for the matching branch.
- Compare the complete version, not just the major release.
- Use the green, orange, or red version-check status only as supporting evidence.
- If affected, follow the hosted-service instruction or plan the Self-Managed upgrade path and required stops.
- Save the advisory URL, comparison result, target release, and decision date in your change or security record.
What a defensible result looks like
A useful conclusion names the environment, edition, exact version, advisory range, and condition that produced the result. For example: “This is a Self-Managed EE installation running the full version shown on Help. The advisory includes that branch and edition, and its configuration condition is present; the installation therefore requires the advisory’s fixed release and an upgrade-path review.” If the version is outside every affected range, state which branch and boundary excluded it. If the hosted service’s release page says the provider already patched the service, cite that release-specific statement and its date rather than claiming that all hosted instances are always patched.
This level of detail makes the decision reproducible when a security reviewer, change manager, or another administrator checks it later. It also prevents the most damaging shortcut: treating a general update badge or a major-version number as a vulnerability assessment.

Can a green GitLab version-check status prove that a specific security advisory does not affect my instance?
No. Green means the check considers the running installation current, but only the advisory’s own affected ranges, edition scope, deployment scope, and configuration conditions establish whether that particular issue applies.
How do I know whether a fixed release on another GitLab branch is safe to use?
Use the branch and upgrade instructions named by the advisory and GitLab’s upgrade-path documentation. A fix listed for one branch does not automatically make every older branch safe or make a direct cross-branch jump supported.
