To verify a CPU upgrade, identify the exact Gigabyte motherboard model and PCB revision, open that board’s official CPU Support List, find the exact processor, and compare its required minimum BIOS version with the BIOS currently installed. “LGA 1700” only identifies a socket family; it does not guarantee that every LGA 1700 processor works on every Gigabyte board or every BIOS revision.
What determines compatibility
Three pieces of information decide whether the upgrade is supported:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Exact motherboard model and revision: for example, a board name followed by “Rev. 1.0.” Two boards with similar names can have different firmware and CPU support.
- Exact processor model: “14th Generation Core” is not precise enough. The support list must contain the complete model, including its suffix where applicable.
- Minimum BIOS version: a processor can be listed as compatible while still requiring a newer BIOS than the one installed on your board.
The chipset or socket is only a starting clue. Gigabyte’s documentation for the B760M H (Rev. 1.0), for example, identifies 12th-, 13th- and 14th-Generation Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron families, but directs owners to the latest CPU Support List for exact processor support. Treat that generation list as a broad orientation, not as final approval.

Read the model printed on the board
Shut down the computer, switch off the power supply and remove the side panel if necessary. Look for the large model marking printed on the PCB. It may be near the PCIe slots, the memory sockets or the edge of the board. Record the complete name rather than only the chipset, such as “B760” or “H610.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not infer the model from the processor, case description or a retailer listing. The box, invoice and a system-information utility can help, but the PCB marking is the best physical check when labels disagree.
Record the PCB revision
Gigabyte normally prints the revision near a board corner as “REV: 1.0,” “Rev. 1.1” or a similar notation. Write it down exactly. Support pages and BIOS files can be revision-specific, so a file intended for a different revision may be unsuitable even when the board names look almost identical.
Use software as a cross-check
Before opening the case, you can confirm the model in the firmware setup screen or in your operating system’s system-information panel. Use those results to locate the support page, then compare them with the physical model and revision marking. If the software reports only a family name, continue checking until you have the full product designation.
Step 2: Open the correct Gigabyte support page
Search Gigabyte’s support site for the complete model and revision. Open the product page that matches both, not merely a page for a similar board in the same chipset series. From that page, open the CPU Support section or the linked CPU Support List.
The CPU Support List is the compatibility authority because it ties individual processor models to firmware requirements. A specifications page can tell you which generations the board family was designed around, but it may not enumerate every supported SKU or the BIOS needed for each one.

If several regional or revision-specific pages appear, verify the revision text and board features before downloading anything. Keep the support page open while checking the processor so you do not accidentally read the list for another model.
Step 3: Find the exact processor in the CPU Support List
Search by complete model name
Use the browser’s find function or the list’s search controls. Enter the full CPU designation, including the generation number and suffix. Similar names can differ in core configuration, power limits or integrated graphics and may have separate entries.

Confirm all of the following in the matching row:
- The processor name is an exact match, not merely the same family.
- The entry belongs to your motherboard model and revision.
- A minimum BIOS version is shown, if one is specified.
If the exact model is absent, do not treat a nearby model as proof of support. Stop and resolve the discrepancy with Gigabyte documentation before purchasing or installing the CPU.
Interpret a generation-wide statement correctly
A board manual may list broad families such as 12th, 13th and 14th Generation Intel Core. That statement establishes the intended platform range, but it does not override the CPU Support List. The list can distinguish models within a generation and can assign different BIOS requirements.
Step 4: Check the BIOS version already installed
Read the installed version
Enter UEFI setup by pressing the key shown during startup, commonly Delete, and locate the BIOS or UEFI information screen. Note the complete version string. You can also read the version from a motherboard utility in the operating system, but confirm it in firmware if the result is unclear.

Compare versions directly
Compare the installed version with the minimum version in the CPU Support List:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If the installed version is the same or newer, the firmware requirement is met.
- If the installed version is older, update the BIOS before relying on the new processor.
- If the list does not show a requirement, follow the board’s current support instructions rather than assuming every release works.
Do not compare release dates casually. Use Gigabyte’s version identifiers and the ordering shown on the exact board page. A newer-looking date on a different model’s download page is irrelevant.
Step 5: Determine whether you can update without the old CPU
If your current BIOS is too old, first determine how that board supports flashing. Read the exact model’s BIOS instructions and the description of its update features before removing the existing processor.
CPU-less update features are board-specific
Gigabyte’s B660M D2H DDR4 (Rev. 1.0) support page identifies Q-Flash Plus, which allows a BIOS update without installing a CPU, memory or graphics card. This is a feature of that cited board example, not a universal property of Gigabyte LGA 1700 motherboards. Your board must explicitly document the feature before you plan to use it.
Check the rear I/O area and the manual for a port or button identified for the supported update method. Follow the file-naming, USB-format and button sequence specified for that board; do not substitute instructions from another Gigabyte model.

If no CPU-less method is documented
Keep the working processor installed while flashing, or arrange access to a processor that the current BIOS supports. A computer shop or system builder may be able to perform the update. Do not remove the old CPU until you have a confirmed way to start the board and complete the update.
How to approach a BIOS update safely
Gigabyte warns on its B760 GAMING X GEN5 support page: “Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.”
For a CPU upgrade, the reason to flash is specific: the support list requires a newer version. Avoid updating merely because a later file exists if your current processor and board are working and the new CPU does not need it.
Before flashing
- Use the BIOS file for the exact motherboard model and revision.
- Read the board’s update procedure from start to finish.
- Back up important data and record custom settings such as boot mode, fan curves and memory profiles.
- Use stable power. Do not begin during a storm or from a connection likely to be interrupted.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and avoid pressing reset or switching off the system during the update.
After flashing
Allow the board to restart as many times as the instructions indicate. Enter firmware setup, confirm the new version, load or review the appropriate defaults, and recheck boot order, storage settings, memory profile and fan controls. Shut down only after the update has completed and the system has reached a stable state.
Compare two or more candidate processors correctly
When deciding between CPUs, make a three-part comparison for each candidate. Socket compatibility should not be the deciding column by itself.

| Comparison point | What to verify | Decision use |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model listing | The complete processor name appears in the CPU Support List for the exact board revision. | An absent entry means compatibility is unresolved, even if the socket and generation match. |
| Minimum BIOS | The list’s required version is compared with the version currently installed. | A candidate needing a newer BIOS adds an update step before installation. |
| Update route | The board’s instructions identify a supported in-system method or a CPU-less feature such as Q-Flash Plus. | This determines whether you can update with your present hardware or need assistance or an older CPU. |
This method prevents a common mistake: choosing the processor with the most attractive specifications and discovering only after removal of the old CPU that the board cannot boot far enough to update.
Installation sequence after compatibility is confirmed
- Confirm the exact board revision, processor model and required BIOS one final time.
- Complete any required BIOS update while the existing system is still known to work, unless the board documents a CPU-less method.
- Shut down, switch off the power supply and unplug the system.
- Discharge residual power according to the board manual, then remove the cooler and existing CPU carefully.
- Inspect the LGA 1700 socket for bent contacts before installing the new processor. Do not force the CPU; it should drop into the keyed position.
- Apply cooler mounting hardware and thermal compound according to the cooler instructions. Reconnect the CPU-fan header.
- Start the system and enter UEFI setup. Confirm that the new processor is identified and that temperatures and fan operation look normal.
- Load the operating system and check stability, device detection and any settings you restored after the BIOS update.
Keep the previous processor and its packaging until the new installation has passed these checks. They provide a practical recovery option if the board does not start or if a firmware setting needs to be changed.
Troubleshooting common verification failures
The support page shows a similar but not identical model
Return to the PCB marking and revision. Model suffixes, memory type and regional variants can lead to separate support pages. Do not download a BIOS until the product page matches exactly.
The CPU is listed, but the system will not boot after installation
Reinstall the previous processor if possible, confirm the BIOS version in UEFI, and check that the update completed successfully. Then inspect socket contacts, CPU power connectors, memory seating and cooler pressure. A listed CPU still requires a correctly installed board and functioning supporting hardware.
The current BIOS is newer than the listed minimum, but the board still fails to start
Verify that the version belongs to this board revision and that the processor name was matched exactly. Clear or restore firmware defaults using the board manual, then test with the minimum hardware needed to reach setup. If the previous CPU works but the new one does not, document the versions and contact Gigabyte support rather than repeatedly flashing unrelated files.
You cannot find a BIOS version in the list
Use the board’s current CPU Support List and BIOS notes together. Some lists identify support by a release threshold without explaining every intermediate version. Follow the latest instructions for that exact product page and avoid extrapolating from another board.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Full Gigabyte motherboard name recorded.
- PCB revision recorded exactly.
- Exact Intel processor model found in that board’s CPU Support List.
- Minimum BIOS version noted from the matching entry.
- Installed BIOS version read from the current system.
- Required update route confirmed for the board.
- Recovery plan retained if the update or installation fails.
Only after every item matches should you treat the processor as a confirmed upgrade for that motherboard. The decisive evidence is the exact model-and-revision CPU Support List entry together with the BIOS comparison; “LGA 1700” alone is not enough.
