Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start with the app or online account for your vehicle and look for privacy, data-sharing, driving-score, or usage-based insurance settings. Then check the car’s infotainment privacy menu and the privacy notice for your specific vehicle and service. A connected car does not automatically share driving data with an insurer: automaker processing for a feature such as a driving score can be separate from an optional insurer-sharing program.
Check your vehicle’s sharing status
- Identify the vehicle and services. Note the make, model, model year, country, connected-services account, and any driving-score or insurance program associated with the car. The settings and data disclosed can depend on equipment, connectivity technology, software, features, enrollment, and choices on file.
- Open the manufacturer’s app or account. Look for Privacy, Data, Consent, Driving Score, Usage-Based Insurance, or Third-Party Data Sharing. Read the full control description to see whether it names an insurer-facing feature or applies more broadly. For example, Toyota’s app includes a Data Privacy Portal where owners can review information about vehicle data transmissions and change preferences: Toyota Data Privacy Portal.
- Check the vehicle itself. Review the infotainment system’s privacy, connectivity, or data-sharing settings and consult the owner’s manual. The route varies by model and year. Ford advises owners to check the vehicle’s settings, manual, or dealer; another driver or profile may also change sharing settings.
- Read the privacy notice for your vehicle and service. Confirm which data is involved, who receives it, whether insurer sharing requires a separate opt-in, and what an opt-out changes. A control that ends an insurance program may not disable data processing needed for a score or other connected feature.
- Record what you find. Save the date, setting name, status, confirmation screen or email, and any support case number. The cited manufacturer materials do not establish a universal consumer-facing sharing-history screen, so ask the manufacturer to verify the current recipients and consent on file if the account does not show them.
- Check account ownership and other drivers. If the car is used, shared, sold, or transferred, verify which account or subscriber is linked and whether another driver can change settings. Toyota warns that a sale or transfer not reported to the company may leave data associated with the account on file.
If the app and in-car menu do not make the status clear, contact the automaker and ask: What driving data is being transmitted now? Who receives it, including service providers and insurers? What consent is recorded for this vehicle and account? Which setting stops insurer-facing sharing, and does it affect any other features?

Understand the difference between a score service and insurer sharing
Do not treat a driving score, a connected-vehicle account, or automaker data processing as proof that an insurer receives the data. The relevant question is whether a distinct insurance-related program is enabled, what it shares, and with whom. Kia, for instance, says LexisNexis Risk Solutions receives data to generate its vehicle-based Driving Score, while certain attributes may also be shared with participating insurers if the owner separately enrolls in Kia’s optional Usage-Based Insurance Program.

What the settings look like at major automakers
| Automaker or service | Where to check | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota | Toyota app account area > Data Privacy Portal | Toyota says it may share Driving Data and Location Data with insurance companies for usage-based insurance when it has express prior consent. Connected Services can also be opted out of, or data transmission deactivated, through the app or by contacting Toyota. Those broader actions may stop collection of certain data categories beyond insurer sharing, so check which consent or service you are changing. Toyota Data Privacy Portal |
| Volkswagen DriveView | myVW app > Account > Vehicle Management > DriveView > “Third Party Data Sharing” | For eligible users who opted in, Volkswagen says switching off “Third Party Data Sharing” and completing the unenrollment steps stops insurance-related sharing. Unenrolling from DriveView also ends its scores and feedback; leaving broader myVW services may affect other services. Volkswagen describes sharing driving behavior, GPS location, and other covered data for 20 days or until 20 trips after opt-in, unless the user opts out earlier. This is a DriveView program rule, not a general rule for connected cars. Volkswagen privacy information |
| Kia | Kia owner’s account for the optional Usage-Based Insurance Program; contact Kia Connect support about Driving Score | Use “Leave Program” to leave the optional insurance program. Kia says this does not stop the data flow to LexisNexis Risk Solutions used to produce Driving Score; disabling Driving Score requires contacting Kia Connect support. Kia connected-services information |
| Ford | Ford app connectivity settings, in-car Settings menu, owner’s manual, or dealer | Ford says data disclosure varies with vehicle equipment, connectivity, features, software, settings, connected services, and selections. It does not provide one menu route that applies to every model and year; another driver or profile may affect settings. Ford privacy information |
| BMW/MINI in the EEA | BMW Group CarData service | BMW Group describes CarData as a way to permit or revoke third-party telematics sharing and view what is stored or transferred. The description applies to BMW/MINI vehicles and companies in the European Economic Area; do not assume the same service or controls apply to U.S. accounts. BMW Group CarData |

- Whether insurer sharing is a distinct affirmative opt-in.

- Whether the notice and controls apply to your model year and country.
What U.S. rules do—and do not—establish
In January 2026, the Federal Trade Commission announced a final order with GM and OnStar resolving agency allegations about collection, use, and sale of precise geolocation and driving-behavior data without adequate notice and affirmative consent. The FTC said the order prohibits specified sharing with consumer reporting agencies for five years. For the order’s 20-year life, it also requires affirmative express consent for covered connected-vehicle data practices, subject to stated exceptions; a way for U.S. consumers to request and delete data; the ability to disable precise geolocation collection for equipped vehicles; and a way to opt out of geolocation and driving-behavior collection, subject to limited exceptions. These provisions concern GM and OnStar; they are not a universal ban on every automaker’s or insurer’s data use. FTC announcement on the GM/OnStar final order
The FTC has also noted that connected vehicles can collect sensitive information, including location and telematics, with potential consequences for privacy and financial welfare. That general concern is a reason to check your own controls, not evidence that a particular car is currently sharing data with an insurer. FTC discussion of connected vehicles
