Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report to see impressions for your site’s links in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. To check broader brand visibility, test a stable set of realistic prompts in the AI answer experiences your audience uses, then log brand mentions, recommendations, and website citations as separate signals. No single metric shows the whole picture: a mention is not a citation, and neither by itself proves a visit or sale.
What to measure—and what each signal means
“Appearing” can mean several different things in an AI answer. Keep these signals distinct in your tracking:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Mention: the answer names your brand, whether or not it links to your site.
- Recommendation: the answer suggests your brand as an option. Record this separately from a neutral mention.
- Citation: the answer supplies a link to your site as a source.
- Impression: Google Search Console reports an impression for a link to your site shown in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Referral or conversion: your analytics records a visit or an outcome on your site. These are business results, not measures of every mention or citation.
Google’s report is specific to Google AI features. Microsoft Clarity’s AI Visibility Citation dashboard reports citation activity, not conventional rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. A direct prompt check captures a sample answer, not every answer users receive. Because the tools count different things, do not combine their figures into one “AI visibility” number without clearly defining it.

1. Choose the platforms, features, markets, and languages
Start with the answer experiences your customers actually use. Record each platform and feature separately, along with the market and language you are checking. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can differ. Google’s guidance on AI features and websites explains the distinction.

2. Build a consistent set of realistic prompts
Include questions a prospective customer might ask, such as:
- Category comparisons: “What are the best [category] options for [need]?”
- Recommendations: “Which [product or service] should I use for [situation]?”
- Problem-solving questions that your product or service could help answer.
- Branded questions, such as “What does [brand] offer?” or “How does [brand] compare with [competitor]?”
Save the exact wording and keep it stable between checks. If you change a prompt, note the change; otherwise, you may mistake a different question for a visibility trend. Repeat the same set over time, but treat each run as a sample: repeated checks cannot guarantee that every user will see the same answer.

3. Check Google’s Search Console report
- Open Google Search Console and select the relevant property.
- Open the Generative AI performance report.
- Review impressions and group or filter the data by page, country, date, and device to investigate where and when links to your site appeared.
Google says worldwide rollout of the report was complete as of August 31, 2026. If you cannot see it, Google says your site may not have received enough impressions in the relevant features. The report also has the usual Search performance-report limitations: recent data can be preliminary, and date grouping uses Pacific Time. It measures Google AI-feature impressions, not every time an answer names your brand.

4. Inspect answers directly
Run each saved prompt in each selected platform and feature. For every check, record the date, market or language, exact prompt, and answer. Note whether the brand is absent, mentioned, recommended, or linked; record competitors and the cited pages as well. Save the full answer where practical, because a short label such as “mentioned” loses context about what the answer actually said.
A manual check tells you what that platform returned for that prompt at that time. It is not a census of all user responses, and one missing answer does not establish that your brand never appears.
5. Add citation monitoring if it fits your needs
Microsoft Clarity documents an AI Visibility Citation dashboard that shows citation activity and cited pages, along with query topics and comparative presence. Domain verification is required; Microsoft says this can be done through a Clarity tracking code, Google Search Console, or Bing Webmaster Tools. The dashboard tracks citation activity only—it does not measure traditional rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. See Microsoft’s Citation Dashboard overview for its scope and setup details.
6. Track visits and outcomes separately
Use your own analytics and conversion reporting to examine referral sessions, leads, or sales. A visibility signal alone does not establish that people visited your site, converted, or did so because of an AI answer. Unlinked brand mentions will not necessarily appear as referral traffic.

| Method | What it indicates | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Generative AI performance report | Impressions for links to your site in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, with dimensions such as page, country, date, and device. | Google-specific; it reports impressions, not a cross-platform count of brand mentions. Recent data may be preliminary, and the report has Search performance-report limitations. Google Search Console Help |
| Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility Citation dashboard | Citation activity, cited pages, query topics, and comparative presence as described by Microsoft. | It does not measure conventional rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. Microsoft Learn |
| Direct prompt checks | A saved sample of an answer, including whether the brand is named or recommended and which links appear for the exact prompt and platform. | Answers can vary by platform and time; comparisons are more interpretable when you preserve the prompt, date, market, and output. |
| Third-party AI visibility checker | A vendor-defined snapshot or ongoing monitor. Ahrefs describes its free checker as returning mentions, platforms, topics, cited domains, and cited pages. | Coverage, prompts, definitions, and plan limits depend on the vendor. How to interpret missing or changing results
- No Search Console report: Google says the site may not have received enough impressions in AI Overviews or AI Mode for the report to appear.
- No brand in one answer: Treat that result as a sample for the prompt, platform, market, and date checked—not proof of permanent absence.
- Different answers across features: Keep features such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode separate; Google says they may produce different responses and links.
- A changing count: Check whether the prompt set, reporting period, market, or tool changed before interpreting a difference as a real trend.
For a useful trend, repeat the same checks over time and retain the underlying answers. Report the scope alongside any result: which platform and feature, which prompts, which market and language, and which dates.
Can you optimize a site to appear in AI answers?
Google says the foundational SEO practices for Search also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require special AI markup or a machine-readable file. As Google Search Central puts it: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or show it. Read Google’s AI features and your website guidance.
Google’s practical guidance includes allowing crawling, making pages discoverable through internal links, providing a useful page experience, making important content available in text, and ensuring structured data matches visible page content. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current where relevant. These are sound site practices, not a promise that an AI answer will mention or cite your brand.
When a third-party checker is useful
A vendor tool can reduce the effort of repeating checks across platforms, but its results remain tied to its own coverage and definitions. Ahrefs describes its checker as a free snapshot and Brand Radar as an ongoing monitoring product; those are vendor descriptions, so check current coverage and features before relying on either. For a small prompt set or an initial baseline, direct checks plus Google’s and Microsoft’s reporting may be enough. For larger, recurring checks, compare a tool’s platform coverage, prompt methodology, and distinction between mentions and citations with the questions you need answered.
