Then cross-check the provider in the European Payments Council’s register for the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) scheme. The register indicates scheme participation—not whether every account or channel can use the service.
What “European instant payments” means
This guide is about instant credit transfers in euros through the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer scheme, usually shortened to SCT Inst. The European Payments Council says the scheme is designed to make funds available in less than ten seconds at any time. That scheme-level description does not establish that a particular customer, account, or banking channel can send or receive an instant transfer.

Check your account in five steps
- Confirm the currency. SCT Inst covers euro-denominated credit transfers. An instant transfer offered in another currency is a different service and does not by itself show that the bank supports SCT Inst.
- Look in the bank’s app or website. Start a new transfer and check for an “instant payment,” “instant transfer,” or “real-time transfer” option. Do not submit a payment just to test whether the service works.
- Read the terms for your account. Check whether instant transfers are available on your account and preferred channel, whether sending and receiving are both supported, and whether fees, limits, or eligibility restrictions apply.
- Cross-check the provider. Search the European Payments Council’s SCT Inst scheme page and Register of Participants. The register is a scheme-level reachability reference used by clearing and settlement mechanisms; it is not confirmation of availability for your particular account or app.
- Ask the bank about the exact account. If the provider or product name is unclear, ask whether that account can send and receive SCT Inst payments in euros through your chosen channel, and whether account-specific or temporary limits apply.
Check sending and receiving separately
A bank’s ability to receive instant payments does not automatically answer whether you can initiate them from your account. Confirm both directions. If you are comparing accounts or providers, use these questions:

- Can this exact account send SCT Inst payments in euros?
- Can it receive them?
- Are both functions available in the app or website I use?
- What fees, limits, or eligibility restrictions apply compared with an ordinary transfer?
- How does the bank show verification of payee, and how does it announce planned maintenance?
Do not assume that a bank’s fee, limit, or app behavior applies to every account it offers; check the current terms for the product you hold.

What EU rollout dates do—and do not—tell you
EU rules set rollout obligations, but deadlines vary by provider type and geography. The European Commission says euro-area payment service providers had to enable receipt of instant euro payments from 9 January 2025 and sending from 9 October 2025. Its payment-services timeline gives later dates for relevant obligations outside the euro area, including 9 January 2027 and 9 July 2027. These dates should not be generalized to every provider in Europe: the applicable deadline depends on the provider and its location.
Those obligations are useful context, not a substitute for checking your account’s current terms and available channels. The Commission’s instant payments information explains the rollout and its timing.

Instant transfers, verification of payee, and availability
Verification of payee is a separate check
Verification of payee checks the supplied payee name against the IBAN and can flag a discrepancy before a payment is processed. It is a related safeguard, not proof that your account can send or receive an instant transfer. The Commission associates verification of payee and the euro-area sending rollout with 9 October 2025, with later dates for relevant non-euro-area providers. See the Commission’s payment-services information for the applicable timeline.
“At any time” does not rule out planned downtime
SCT Inst is intended to operate at any time, but the European Payments Council’s current rulebook permits short, foreseeable planned periods of non-availability when customers are informed in advance. The EPC states that its current SCT Inst rulebook is 2025 version 1.2, published on 30 September 2026. If a transfer option is temporarily unavailable, check the bank’s service notices or contact support rather than treating one maintenance window as proof that the account never supports the scheme. See the EPC SCT Inst scheme page.

When you still cannot get a clear answer
Give the bank the exact account or product name and ask for confirmation of euro SCT Inst sending and receiving, the channel you intend to use, and any limits or restrictions. A provider’s appearance in the EPC register is a useful cross-check, but only the bank can confirm the terms and availability that apply to your account. Account eligibility, fees, limits, register entries, and maintenance notices can change, so verify them against current bank information.
