Check compatibility at two levels: the app itself and every driver or accessory it depends on. Windows 11 on Arm can run most Windows applications, including many x86 and x64 programs through emulation. Native Arm64 builds are the clearest option, but an application can still fail when it installs an unsupported driver or other system-level component. For peripherals, the exact model must either use a driver built into Windows 11 or have an Arm64 driver released by its manufacturer.
Use the laptop’s exact Snapdragon model, Windows edition and build, application version, accessory model and required feature when you check. “Works with Windows” is too broad to answer an Arm compatibility question.

What compatibility means on a Snapdragon laptop
A Snapdragon Windows laptop is a Windows on Arm PC. Its processor uses the Arm architecture rather than the x86 architecture used by many traditional Windows PCs. Compatibility therefore has more than one possible outcome:
- Native Arm64: The publisher compiled the application for Windows on Arm. It runs directly on the processor and is normally the best choice for performance and system integration.
- x86 or x64 under emulation: Windows translates instructions from an application built for another processor architecture. Microsoft says Windows 11 supports emulation for many x86 and x64 applications, and Windows 11 version 24H2 includes its Prism emulator for improved performance of emulated applications.
- Driver-dependent: The visible application may install, but a kernel driver, hardware driver, anti-cheat driver, virtualization component, security module or other system integration may not support Windows on Arm. Emulation of the main program does not create an Arm64 version of that driver.
These categories explain why an installer completing successfully is not proof that every feature will work. A photo editor that needs no special driver may run under emulation, while a scanner utility, security product or game that installs a system driver may stop at launch or lose a key function.

Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ is the primary platform guidance. For a specific app or device, the publisher or hardware maker remains the authority for the exact version and model.
Use this five-part compatibility test
| Check | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processor and Windows context | Arm-based processor, exact Windows edition, version and build, and laptop model | Windows release, processor generation and updates can change the applicable support information. |
| Application architecture | Native Arm64, x86/x64 emulated, or no stated Arm support | Native builds avoid translation; emulated builds can work but are not a guarantee of every feature. |
| System dependencies | Drivers, anti-cheat, virtualization, security, accessibility, input or cloud-storage integration | These components may need their own Arm64 support even when the main executable runs. |
| Accessory model and driver | Exact model, Windows 11 on Arm statement, inbox Windows driver or manufacturer Arm64 driver | A generic Windows download or a similar model’s support page does not establish compatibility. |
| Real workflow | The function you actually need, such as duplex printing, scanning, camera input or game sign-in | Basic installation can succeed while an optional or driver-dependent feature fails. |
Step 1: confirm that the laptop is the Windows on Arm device you think it is
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Record the processor description, system type, Windows edition, version and OS build. Microsoft’s printer guidance says an ARM device displays “ARM based processor” next to System type.
- Write down the exact laptop model and Snapdragon processor generation. Keep this information with your compatibility notes; a support page for one model or Windows build may not apply to another.
- Check whether Windows is in S mode. S mode limits installation to Microsoft Store apps unless you permanently switch out of S mode. That restriction is separate from Arm driver and application support, so leaving S mode does not automatically solve an incompatible driver.
Do not carry an old Windows 10 on Arm assumption into Windows 11. Microsoft’s FAQ distinguishes the releases: its Windows 10 guidance says x64 applications do not work there, while its Windows 11 guidance describes x64 emulation and Prism in Windows 11 version 24H2. Always match the advice to the release shown in Settings.
Step 2: check the application at its official source
Search the publisher’s official support or download page for the exact product and version followed by Windows on Arm, Arm64 or Snapdragon. If the publisher offers a native Arm64 build, use that rather than an x86 or x64 package. Also check the Microsoft Store listing when the publisher distributes the app there.

- A statement that the current release supports Windows 11 on Arm or Arm64.
- A download labeled Arm64, ARM64 or Windows on Arm.
- A version number and minimum Windows build that match your laptop.
- Known limitations for emulation, plug-ins, extensions or specific features.
- A separate note about drivers, anti-cheat, virtualization, security software or other components installed alongside the app.
“Runs on Windows” does not answer the architecture question. If the page only lists Windows without an Arm statement, treat that as unresolved and ask the publisher for confirmation of the exact Windows 11 on Arm release and feature you need. Microsoft recommends the application organization’s own compatibility guidance for software with special dependencies.
How to interpret the three common answers
- Native Arm64 supported: The app is built for the processor. Confirm that plug-ins, add-ons and any companion service are supported too; a native main program can still call an incompatible component.
- x86/x64 supported through emulation: Windows 11 may run the program without a native build. Check the publisher’s limitations and test your important workflow rather than assuming feature parity.
- No Arm statement or an explicit “not supported” notice: Do not rely on an installer’s ability to launch. Ask the publisher whether a supported release exists and whether its system components work on Windows 11 Arm.
Step 3: identify everything the app installs or controls
Before installing, determine whether the software depends on a component that runs below the normal application layer. Ask these questions:

- Does it install a kernel or hardware driver?
- Does it use an anti-cheat driver or another game-security service?
- Does it require virtualization, a hypervisor extension or a specialized security module?
- Does it install an input method editor, assistive-technology component or Windows customization hook?
- Does it provide cloud-storage integration that runs in Explorer or as a background filter?
- Does it install third-party antivirus protection?
Microsoft specifically identifies unsupported drivers, anti-cheat drivers, some assistive technologies, input method editors, cloud-storage applications and some third-party antivirus products as areas that can have problems on Windows 11 Arm. The failure may appear as a blocked installation, a service that will not start, missing hardware, or an app that opens but cannot perform its main task.
Separate the application’s architecture from its dependencies in your notes. “The app is x64 and emulates” describes the executable; it says nothing about whether a required driver is Arm64.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStep 4: check each accessory by exact model
- Find the model number on the device, its label or its existing Windows entry. Record the complete model, not just the product family.
- Open the hardware manufacturer’s support page and search that model with
Windows 11 on ArmorArm64 driver. - Verify whether the device works with a driver already built into Windows 11 or whether the manufacturer supplies a driver specifically compiled for Arm64.
- Read the supported-features list. A device can be detected while an advanced function, utility or firmware tool remains unsupported.
- Install only the driver or software recommended for that model and Windows version. A generic Windows installer is not evidence of Arm support.
Microsoft’s rule is direct: “Peripherals work if the drivers they depend on are built into Windows 11, or if the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for the device.” You can read that statement in the Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ.
Separate basic connection from full feature support
Test the function that caused you to buy or keep the accessory. For a webcam, check video and microphone selection in the application you use. For an audio interface, check input, output and any control-panel features. For a storage device, check the vendor utility only if you need it; ordinary USB storage may work through Windows while a proprietary management tool does not. For a security token or biometric accessory, test sign-in or authentication rather than merely checking whether Windows lists the device.
This model-by-model approach is necessary because Windows on Arm support is not a blanket approval for every revision in a product family.

Printers and scanners: use Windows’ path first when an installer fails
Microsoft says Windows 11 Arm supports most printers, including printers that support the Mopria printing standard. HP and Xerox provide Printer Support Apps for supported devices. Certification or a built-in print path does not promise that every optional vendor utility, scanning function or finishing feature will work, so verify the exact model and features with its manufacturer.
Recommended printer check
- Search the printer maker’s support page for the exact model and Windows 11 on Arm or Arm64 information.
- Check whether the printer supports Mopria or whether Windows lists a compatible built-in driver.
- Connect the printer and follow Windows’ Add or install a printer instructions instead of immediately running a manufacturer installer.
- Print a test page, then test the functions you need: color, duplex, multiple trays, wireless discovery or scanning.
- If the manufacturer gives different instructions for your model, follow those instructions and ask the maker to confirm Arm support.
Microsoft’s support page notes: “Microsoft is aware of some ARM PCs not being able to add or install a printer when using an installer provided by the printer manufacturer.” Its recommended fallback is Windows’ own printer setup, unless the printer manufacturer advises otherwise. The detailed guidance is in Help with installing printers on ARM PCs.
A printer’s basic print path and its scanner path can differ. Treat scanning, faxing, maintenance utilities and specialty finishing as separate features. Windows Fax and Scan is unavailable on Windows 11 Arm, so check whether your multifunction printer offers another supported scanning route.
Step 5: test the workflow before you depend on it
For software or hardware that is important for work, study, accessibility, security or gaming, perform a short acceptance test after checking the vendor statement. Use the real account, file type, network, accessory and feature—not only a successful launch.
- Office or creative app: Open representative files, use plug-ins and export to the formats you need.
- Printer: Print a duplex, color and multi-page job if those functions matter; scan separately on a multifunction device.
- Camera or audio device: Select it in the target meeting, recording or production application and verify input and output.
- Security or sign-in tool: Test the sign-in flow, not just the presence of a background service.
- Game: Launch the game and complete the sign-in or protected multiplayer path, because an anti-cheat driver can be the compatibility boundary.
- Assistive technology: Test the exact interaction method and every application in which it must operate.
Keep the publisher’s support answer, model number, Windows build and test result together. If an update changes the app or Windows build, repeat the relevant test; compatibility can change with versions.

What to do when installation or a feature fails
The installer says the app is unsupported
Confirm that you downloaded the Arm64 package when one exists. If the publisher supplies only x86 or x64, check its Windows 11 Arm policy and whether emulation is supported for that version. Do not bypass an explicit unsupported-driver warning by forcing the installer; contact the publisher for an Arm-compatible release.
The app installs but a device is missing
Return to the dependency check. Identify the missing driver or service and look for an Arm64 release from the hardware or software developer. Reinstalling the emulated application will not supply an Arm64 driver.
A printer installer fails
Use Windows’ built-in Add or install a printer route, then test printing. Check the printer maker’s model-specific guidance before installing another package. Microsoft documents this exact ARM-installer problem in its printer support article.
A game or security product refuses to start
Ask the publisher whether its anti-cheat, antivirus or security driver supports Windows 11 Arm. Microsoft lists some anti-cheat drivers and some third-party antivirus products as compatibility trouble spots. A working desktop application does not establish that its protected or security-sensitive component is supported.
A peripheral works only through a manufacturer utility
Test the device through Windows first. If the basic function works but the utility does not, ask the manufacturer whether that utility has an Arm64 build and whether the missing feature depends on a driver. Do not infer support from a download page that lists Windows without an architecture or model qualification.
Best Value
Keep Windows and support information current
Install current Windows updates before retesting. On the ARM-based Surface devices covered by Microsoft’s support guidance, the path is Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. That page is Surface-specific, so use the laptop maker’s update instructions for other Snapdragon models.
After an update, recheck the application’s version and the accessory’s driver. Record the Windows build shown in Settings > System > About; it gives the publisher a precise context when you report a problem.
Use compatibility lists as leads, not certification
Microsoft links to Works on Windows on Arm, an evolving open-source site to which Microsoft contributes compatibility data. It can help you find leads for applications and games, but it is not a substitute for the publisher’s current support statement. Verify any essential case with the app maker and test the required workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
Likewise, a Mopria certification or a Windows device entry is useful evidence for a printer’s basic path, not a guarantee for every bundled utility. The strongest evidence combines the exact model’s manufacturer statement, the required Arm64 or inbox driver, and a successful test of the feature you need.
