To check compatibility, compare the exact earphone and phone or computer models, then match the Bluetooth audio profiles and codecs required for the functions you want. Bluetooth on both devices is not a universal guarantee. Stereo music normally requires the A2DP profile; calls and microphone capture require HFP (and sometimes HSP). Newer LE Audio has separate hardware, operating-system, codec and driver requirements.
Start with the function you need
Compatibility is not one yes-or-no question. A pair may play music but fail to provide a usable microphone, or support basic Bluetooth audio while lacking a companion app or a newer codec. Write down the exact model number of the earphones and the exact phone, tablet or computer model. Then identify the functions that matter:

- stereo music and video playback;
- phone calls or computer voice chat;
- microphone capture from the earphones;
- earphone controls such as play, pause or track skipping;
- a manufacturer companion app;
- a specific codec such as LDAC or LC3; or
- Bluetooth LE Audio features.
Use the model’s manual or specification sheet rather than relying on a product name, a Bluetooth logo or a retailer’s short feature list. Sony’s compatibility guidance says the playback device must support the profiles and codecs required for the earphone function, and also warns that matching specifications still do not guarantee a connection to every Bluetooth device.

| What you want to do | Profile or capability to check | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Listen to music, podcasts or video in stereo | A2DP | Classic Bluetooth stereo audio from the host device to the earphones |
| Use the earphones’ microphone for a call or voice chat | HFP | Microphone capture with simultaneous monaural playback |
| Use older hands-free functions | HSP, where applicable | A headset-oriented call and microphone profile supported by some products |
| Operate playback controls | AVRCP | Remote commands such as play, pause or track control when implemented by both devices |
| Use a newer Bluetooth LE audio path | LE Audio support, including a compatible codec and drivers | A separate Bluetooth Low Energy audio system; Bluetooth LE capability alone is not enough |
A2DP is the important check for ordinary stereo media. It does not provide audio capture. HFP is the check for a working headset microphone and call audio. A device can support one use without supporting the other, so “it connects” does not prove that every feature will work.

How to check the specifications
1. Record the exact model numbers
Read the label on the charging case, the earphone settings page or the original packaging. Record the host model too: a computer’s Bluetooth behavior can vary by its radio, driver and operating-system version even when the computer has a familiar brand name. If the product has several generations, do not assume the specification of one generation applies to another.
2. Find the Bluetooth profile list
In each manual or specification page, search for “Bluetooth profiles,” “supported profiles” or “Bluetooth services.” For stereo playback, look for A2DP on both sides. For calls or voice chat, look for HFP and, if listed, HSP. AVRCP is relevant to remote playback controls, but it is not a substitute for A2DP.
Sony’s computer-audio guidance specifically notes that high-quality music playback requires a Bluetooth-enabled computer supporting A2DP and cautions that not every Bluetooth headphone supports that profile. Check the host and the earphones separately; a profile listed for one device does not add it to the other.

3. Compare codecs for the quality or feature you want
Codecs determine how compatible devices encode and decode Bluetooth audio. If you require a named codec such as LDAC or LC3, confirm that the earphones and the playback device both list it. A codec listed only on the earphones will not create support on the phone or computer. Codec support also does not replace the underlying audio-profile check.
4. Check companion-app requirements separately
Basic Bluetooth playback and a manufacturer’s app can have different requirements. Sony advises checking the supported smartphone operating-system requirements for its Sound Connect app. Therefore, a phone may be able to play audio while being unable to install or fully use the app that changes settings, updates firmware or exposes extra controls. Verify the app’s stated operating-system requirement for the exact earphone model.
A practical model-by-model compatibility workflow
- Make a two-column list. Put the earphone model in one column and the phone or computer model in the other. Include the operating-system version for the host, since platform support can change by version.
- Mark each desired function. Create separate rows for stereo playback, calls, microphone capture, playback controls, the companion app, named codecs and LE Audio. This prevents a “works for music” result from being mistaken for full compatibility.
- Copy the specification wording. Record the profiles and codecs exactly as the manufacturer lists them. If a specification page only says “Bluetooth audio,” treat that as incomplete and find the detailed manual or support page.
- Compare both ends of every row. A2DP must be present on both devices for classic stereo media; HFP or HSP must be present for the relevant call and microphone function. A codec or LE Audio feature must likewise be supported by the host and the earphones.
- Check software dependencies. Confirm the phone operating-system requirement for the companion app. On Windows, check the operating-system version, Bluetooth hardware, codec and drivers separately when LE Audio is required.
- Test the real task. Play music, start a call and try the microphone independently. If the purchase is important, test the exact pair with the exact application rather than relying only on a pairing notification.
This workflow also gives you a useful record when contacting a manufacturer. You can report the exact models, profile lists and function that fails instead of saying only that Bluetooth will not work.
What changes when you use Windows
Windows treats classic Bluetooth music and headset calls as different audio modes. Microsoft describes A2DP as high-quality stereo playback without audio capture. When an application opens the headset microphone, Windows uses HFP, which provides microphone capture with monaural playback.

In practical terms, music normally uses A2DP when it is available. Starting a call, meeting or voice-chat application that opens the earphones’ microphone can switch the connection to HFP. The sound may then become mono or noticeably lower quality. This is normal profile behavior, not necessarily a defective pair of earphones.
Some computer configurations expose two output choices, often labeled “Headphones” and “Headset.” Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says choosing “Headphones” can improve music playback when those choices appear. The labels and exact behavior depend on the computer and Windows configuration. Choose the stereo “Headphones” endpoint for ordinary listening; choose the “Headset” endpoint when the application needs the earphones’ microphone.
Check Windows 11 for LE Audio support
LE Audio is a separate compatibility question. It is not implied by the words “Bluetooth LE” in a computer’s specification. Microsoft says Windows LE Audio requires support in both the Windows computer and the earphones, compatible Bluetooth LE hardware and codec support, and capable drivers for the Bluetooth radio and audio codec.
Microsoft’s current Windows guidance requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer for LE Audio. Windows 10 and Windows 11 version 21H2 are stated not to support LE Audio. Even on a supported Windows release, the computer’s hardware and drivers must qualify.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Devices.
- Look for Use LE Audio when available.
If that setting is absent, Microsoft says the computer does not currently support LE Audio. The reason may be hardware or driver limitations. The absence of the switch does not mean classic A2DP or HFP audio cannot work; it means the LE Audio path is not currently available on that Windows installation.
Phone checks before you buy or pair
For music and video
- Confirm A2DP support in the phone and the earphones.
- Confirm any codec you specifically need on both devices.
- Check whether the phone’s operating system meets the earphone app’s requirement if app controls matter.
For calls and voice recording
- Confirm HFP support, and HSP if the manufacturer lists it for the intended call function.
- Check that the earphones include a microphone; a playback-only Bluetooth accessory cannot provide capture merely because the phone has Bluetooth.
- Verify the call or chat application is allowed to use the microphone and that the earphones are selected as its input device.
These checks establish whether the requested functions are specified. They do not prove that every phone and earphone combination will connect. Sony’s warning applies even when profiles and codecs appear to match, so test the actual pair if the purchase or work requirement is critical.
Computer checks beyond Windows
For a Mac, Chromebook or another operating system, use the same model-specific method: check the computer’s Bluetooth audio profiles, codec support and operating-system requirements against the earphones’ manual. The names of menus and audio endpoints differ, so do not transfer Windows’ “Headphones” and “Headset” labels to another platform.

For any computer, distinguish its built-in Bluetooth radio from the operating system’s audio implementation. A computer can advertise Bluetooth connectivity while lacking the profile, codec or driver needed for the function you want. The manual for the computer or its Bluetooth module is the authoritative place to confirm those details.

Common compatibility traps
- Bluetooth version numbers are treated as feature lists. A Bluetooth logo or a reference to Bluetooth LE does not establish A2DP, HFP, a particular codec or LE Audio.
- One-sided codec support. LDAC or LC3 listed on the earbuds alone does not make the phone or computer compatible with that codec.
- Music support is mistaken for call support. A2DP handles stereo output, while microphone capture requires HFP or an applicable HSP implementation.
- The app is assumed to follow pairing. A phone can play audio even when its operating system does not meet the companion app’s requirements.
- Windows’ call-mode change is diagnosed as a hardware fault. When an application opens the microphone, HFP’s monaural mode can replace A2DP’s stereo mode.
- An adapter is assumed to solve everything. A USB Bluetooth adapter still needs suitable software and profiles, and its support can be specific to certain products.
- A specification match is treated as a guarantee. Sony cautions that matching profiles and codecs do not guarantee connection to every Bluetooth device.
What to do when pairing succeeds but audio does not
Music connects, but the sound is missing or poor
- Confirm that A2DP is listed for both devices.
- On Windows, select the stereo “Headphones” output when a separate “Headset” endpoint is shown.
- Close applications that may have opened the earphones’ microphone, because that can move Windows to HFP.
- Check the selected codec if the earphones or phone offers codec choices, and ensure the same codec is supported at both ends.
The microphone does not work
- Confirm HFP or HSP support rather than checking A2DP alone.
- In the call or chat application, select the Bluetooth headset microphone as the input.
- On Windows, expect HFP’s monaural playback when the microphone is active; A2DP cannot provide simultaneous microphone capture.
The app cannot find or control the earphones
Separate app compatibility from Bluetooth audio compatibility. Recheck the phone operating-system requirement for the exact app and model. A successful Bluetooth pairing does not prove that the companion app supports that phone.
LE Audio is unavailable
Check the Windows version, the computer’s Bluetooth LE capability, the required codec and the manufacturer drivers. On Windows 11, the missing Use LE Audio when available setting indicates that the current computer and driver combination does not support the feature. Classic Bluetooth profiles may still be available independently.
When a USB Bluetooth adapter may help
A computer with unsuitable or missing Bluetooth audio support may be able to use a USB Bluetooth audio adapter. This is not an automatic fix: check the adapter’s software, supported profiles and compatibility with the operating system, then compare those capabilities with the earphones.
Philips describes USB-adapter use for certain named Philips headset models and says newer adapter kits typically support A2DP and HFP/HSP. That guidance is specific to the products on its support page and should not be generalized to every adapter or every earphone. Treat an adapter as a conditional solution after identifying the computer’s actual limitation.
Classic Bluetooth audio versus LE Audio
| Comparison point | Classic Bluetooth audio | Bluetooth LE Audio |
|---|---|---|
| Core requirement | Matching classic audio profiles such as A2DP and HFP | Support in both host and earphones, plus compatible LE hardware, codec and drivers |
| Media playback | A2DP provides stereo output | Uses the LE Audio system and its supported capabilities |
| Microphone and calls | HFP provides capture with monaural playback | Requires LE Audio support on the particular host, earphones and software stack |
| Windows requirement | Depends on the computer’s classic Bluetooth audio implementation | Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer, qualifying hardware, codec and drivers |
| What Bluetooth branding proves | Only that some Bluetooth function exists; it does not prove A2DP or HFP | Bluetooth LE branding alone does not prove LE Audio |
A pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Write down the exact earphone and host model numbers.
- Decide whether you need playback only, calls, microphone capture, app controls, a named codec or LE Audio.
- Check A2DP on both devices for stereo music and video.
- Check HFP, and HSP where applicable, for calls and microphone capture.
- Check AVRCP if remote playback controls are important.
- Compare every required codec on both devices.
- Check the companion app’s phone operating-system requirement.
- For Windows LE Audio, confirm Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer, the Use LE Audio when available setting, compatible hardware, codec and drivers.
- If the computer lacks suitable Bluetooth audio, investigate a USB adapter’s own profile and software support.
- Test the exact pair for the exact use—especially calls—because matching profiles and codecs do not guarantee a connection to every Bluetooth device.
Why a specification match is not a guarantee
Bluetooth profiles and codecs describe capabilities, not every detail of a manufacturer’s implementation. Sony explicitly states that even when the playback device and headphones have the same profiles and supported codecs, connection to all Bluetooth devices is not guaranteed. Firmware, drivers, operating-system behavior and model-specific integration can affect the result.
The safest conclusion is therefore conditional: the pair is specified for the function when both devices list the required profile and codec, but only a test of the exact models can establish reliable real-world compatibility. Verify the function you actually need rather than treating a successful pairing screen as proof that music, calls, controls, apps and LE Audio will all work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will any Bluetooth wireless earphones work with any phone?
No. The phone and earphones must support the profiles and codecs needed for the function. Check A2DP for stereo playback and HFP or HSP for calls and microphone capture, then verify the exact models. Even matching specifications do not guarantee every device combination will connect.
Why does music work but the earphone microphone not work?
Music commonly uses A2DP, which provides stereo output only. Microphone capture requires HFP or an applicable HSP implementation. Confirm that profile on both devices and select the Bluetooth microphone in the call or chat application.
Why does Bluetooth sound worse when I join a Windows call?
When a Windows application opens the headset microphone, Windows switches from A2DP to HFP. HFP supports simultaneous capture and monaural playback, so audio can sound mono or lower quality. Select the stereo “Headphones” endpoint for ordinary listening when it is available.
Does Bluetooth LE mean the earbuds support LE Audio?
No. LE Audio requires support in both the host and earphones, plus compatible Bluetooth LE hardware, codec support and drivers. Bluetooth LE capability or branding alone does not establish LE Audio support.
Which Windows versions support LE Audio?
Microsoft’s current guidance requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer, along with qualifying hardware, codec support and drivers. Windows 10 and Windows 11 version 21H2 are stated not to support LE Audio.
How can I check LE Audio on a Windows 11 computer?
Open Settings, choose Bluetooth & devices, select Devices and look for “Use LE Audio when available.” If the setting is absent, Microsoft says the current computer and driver combination does not support LE Audio. Classic Bluetooth audio may still work.
Will a USB Bluetooth adapter make incompatible earbuds work?
It may help when the computer lacks suitable Bluetooth audio, but it is conditional. Check the adapter’s operating-system software and supported profiles, then compare them with the earphones. Adapter guidance can be specific to particular headset models.
Can earbuds pair successfully but still lack app support?
Yes. Basic Bluetooth playback and a manufacturer companion app can have different operating-system requirements. Check the app requirement for the exact earphone model and phone; pairing alone does not prove that the app will install or expose every feature.
The Bottom Line
Bluetooth pairing is only the starting point. Match the exact models, required profiles and codecs, then check app and operating-system requirements. Use A2DP for classic stereo media, HFP or HSP for microphone calls, and verify Windows 11 hardware, codec and driver requirements separately for LE Audio. Because matching specifications are not a universal guarantee, test the actual earphones with the actual phone, computer and application when reliability matters.
