Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run powercfg /getactivescheme. Windows reports the currently active power scheme; if the returned scheme name is Ultimate Performance, that named plan is active. Use powercfg /list or Control Panel’s Power Options page when you also need to see the other schemes installed on the PC.
Use the direct command first
The quickest status check is built into Windows 11 and does not change any settings.

- Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. You can search for either application from the Start menu.
- Type
powercfg /getactiveschemeand press Enter. - Read the scheme name in the returned line. The result is Ultimate Performance only when that exact named scheme is reported.
/getactivescheme asks Windows which power scheme is active at that moment. It is a read-only check: running it does not switch plans, alter processor settings, or change battery behavior.

Match the name Windows returns, not a general impression that the computer feels fast. If the output names Ultimate Performance, the active named scheme is Ultimate Performance. If it names another scheme, Ultimate Performance is not the active scheme, even if the computer is plugged in or running demanding software.

Why the command is preferable for a quick answer
The command reports the active scheme directly instead of asking you to infer it from a list or from a performance slider. It is also useful when Control Panel shows several similarly named plans or when the plan name is not obvious in the graphical interface.
See every installed scheme with powercfg /list
To inspect the broader set of power schemes on the computer, run:
powercfg /list
This command lists the schemes Windows makes available on that installation. In Microsoft’s documented output example, an asterisk identifies the active scheme. Find the entry named Ultimate Performance, then check whether that same entry carries the active marker.
How to interpret the list
- Ultimate Performance with the asterisk: it is listed and active.
- Ultimate Performance without the asterisk: it is installed or available in the list, but another scheme is active.
- No Ultimate Performance entry: the command does not show that scheme as available on the machine. The output still tells you which listed scheme is active.
Use /list for context and /getactivescheme for the unambiguous active-plan answer. You can run both commands without administrative rights in a normal Windows Terminal or Command Prompt window.

Check graphically in Control Panel
Control Panel provides a visual cross-check of the same named power schemes.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound.
- Open Power Options.
- Inspect the plans shown on the page. Microsoft’s documented example marks the active scheme with an asterisk.
If Ultimate Performance is displayed with the active marker, it is the selected named scheme. If another plan has the marker, Ultimate Performance is not active. When the list is difficult to interpret, return to powercfg /getactivescheme; the command is the more direct status check.
When Control Panel and the command seem different
Check that you are comparing the same moment and the same Windows installation. A command run in one operating-system installation cannot describe a different installation on a dual-boot computer. Also refresh the Power Options page after changing a scheme elsewhere. For a definitive name, trust the current output from powercfg /getactivescheme.

Do not confuse Power mode with Ultimate Performance
Windows 11 exposes a separate control called Power mode under Settings > System > Power & battery. Its choices include Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance.

Best performance in Settings is not proof that the named Ultimate Performance power scheme is active. Power mode is a Windows Settings control for choosing a performance-versus-efficiency mode; powercfg /getactivescheme reports the selected named power scheme. Ask the command when the question is specifically whether Ultimate Performance is active.
What Best performance does tell you
Best performance indicates that Windows is prioritizing performance in the Power mode control. Microsoft notes that this choice can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make the device warmer. Those effects do not identify the active named scheme.
Why the Power mode selector may be unavailable
Microsoft notes that a custom power plan may prevent changing Power mode. That limitation concerns the Settings control; it does not turn the Best performance label into an Ultimate Performance status indicator. If you need the named-plan status, use the powercfg command regardless of what the Settings page displays.

- Query the active scheme: run
powercfg /getactiveschemeand record the exact name Windows returns. - List the available schemes: run
powercfg /listif you need to know whether Ultimate Performance is present at all. - Confirm visually: open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and look for the active marker.
- Check the separate mode only for context: open Settings > System > Power & battery. Treat Best performance as a Power mode setting, not as confirmation of Ultimate Performance.
The first step answers “Which named scheme is active?” The second and third show the surrounding choices. The fourth answers a different question about Windows’ performance mode.
How to read common outcomes
| What you observe | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
/getactivescheme reports Ultimate Performance |
The Ultimate Performance named scheme is active. | No further status check is required. Use /list only if you want to document the other schemes. |
/getactivescheme reports another name |
A different named scheme is active. | Do not infer Ultimate Performance from the Settings slider; the command has already answered the status question. |
/list shows Ultimate Performance with no asterisk |
The scheme is listed but is not selected. | Use the name carrying the asterisk, or confirm it with /getactivescheme. |
/list does not show Ultimate Performance |
The command does not show that scheme as available on this installation. | Record the active scheme that is listed. The absence alone does not establish a single cause. |
| Settings shows Best performance | The Power mode control is set to a performance-prioritizing option. | Run powercfg /getactivescheme to determine the named scheme. |
| Control Panel shows several plans | More than one scheme is available for selection. | Use the active marker or the command output to identify the selected one. |
If Ultimate Performance is missing
Start by separating two facts: /getactivescheme reports the current selection, while /list reports the schemes shown as available. If Ultimate Performance is absent from both /list and Control Panel, those checks establish that it is not being offered in the displayed list; they do not explain why.
Availability can vary by Windows 11 build, device configuration, and original-equipment configuration. The documented checks do not provide a complete availability matrix for every computer, so avoid assuming that every Windows 11 installation must expose Ultimate Performance or that a missing entry has one universal cause.

What you should not do for a status check
Do not run powercfg /setactive merely to see whether a plan is active. Microsoft documents /setactive as making a specified scheme active, so it changes the current selection. It is an action command, not an inspection command.
Best Value
Safe next checks
- Run
powercfg /getactiveschemeagain to capture the current active name. - Run
powercfg /listand check whether the plan appears at all. - Compare the command output with Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Check Settings > System > Power & battery only to understand the separate Power mode selection.
These steps diagnose what Windows is currently exposing without silently changing the selected scheme.
Command-line versus graphical checks
| Method | Best for | What it reveals | Does it change the plan? |
|---|---|---|---|
powercfg /getactivescheme |
A direct yes-or-no answer | The exact name of the currently active named scheme | No |
powercfg /list |
Seeing all schemes in command output | Available schemes and, in the documented output format, an asterisk beside the active one | No |
| Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options | A visual confirmation | The displayed plans and the active marker | No, unless you deliberately select a different plan |
| Settings > System > Power & battery | Checking Windows’ Power mode | Best power efficiency, Balanced, or Best performance, where available | Changing the selector changes Power mode, not a direct Ultimate Performance diagnosis |
Frequently misunderstood points
Does a plugged-in laptop automatically use Ultimate Performance?
No. Being connected to AC power does not identify the active named scheme. Query the scheme with powercfg /getactivescheme.
Does Best performance mean Ultimate Performance?
No. Best performance is a Power mode choice in Settings. Only the returned named scheme from powercfg /getactivescheme can confirm Ultimate Performance.
Can I verify the plan without changing anything?
Yes. Use /getactivescheme, /list, and the Control Panel view. Avoid /setactive because that command selects a scheme.
What if the command reports a different plan?
That different plan is the active named scheme at the time of the check. Ultimate Performance may still appear in /list as an available but inactive option, or it may not be listed.
Final check
For the exact question “Is Windows 11 using Ultimate Performance?”, run powercfg /getactivescheme and inspect the reported name. Use powercfg /list and Control Panel for context, and keep the Settings Power mode label separate from the named power-scheme status.
