HP’s “up to 42 hours” figure applies to local video playback on the HP OmniBook 5 under a specific test—not to ordinary browsing, streaming, gaming, or mixed work. To check a particular laptop, use HP’s diagnostic to assess battery condition, review Windows’ battery report for capacity and usage history, and time a separate playback test if you need an actual runtime measurement.
What HP’s 42-hour claim measures
HP announced the OmniBook 5 on October 1, 2026, advertising up to 42 hours of VPB (local video playback). Its published test used continuous, full-screen FHD video at 1920×1080 resolution and 200 nits brightness. The video played from local storage; wireless was on but not connected. System audio was at the image default and player audio at 100%, with sound through attached headphones or the speakers if the laptop had no audio jack. HP’s announcement and test footnote describe the method.

“Up to” is a best-case manufacturer claim under those conditions, not a guarantee for every OmniBook 5 configuration or a prediction of everyday battery life. HP says runtime varies by configuration and maximum battery capacity decreases over time and use. Its OmniBook 5 product page also describes the figure as local video playback.

Battery condition, reported capacity and measured runtime answer different questions. Neither a diagnostic result nor a Windows report independently verifies the 42-hour claim.

1. Identify the exact laptop configuration
Record the OmniBook 5 model or product number, processor, display and battery condition. HP says configuration affects runtime, so a result from one unit should not be treated as representative of the whole product line.
2. Run HP’s Battery Check
- In Windows, open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows.
- Select Component Tests → Power → Battery Check and run the test.
- Review the result and, if needed, Test Logs.
HP says Battery Check takes about two minutes. Results such as Passed, Weak, Very Weak or Replace indicate battery condition; they do not tell you whether the laptop can run for 42 hours. HP also documents checking the battery in UEFI diagnostics if the Windows diagnostic is unavailable. Screens can differ by software version. See HP’s Battery Check instructions.
3. Review Windows’ battery report
- On Windows 11, open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Open the HTML report at the file location printed in Command Prompt. Start with Installed battery, Recent usage and Battery usage.
The report offers capacity and usage-history context, not a controlled playback test. Microsoft describes it in its Windows battery guidance.

Time a runtime test if you want to check hours
If your question is how long your particular laptop runs, only a timed use test answers that directly. For a result comparable to HP’s claim, reproduce its conditions as closely as possible:
- Start with a fully charged laptop and note its exact model and configuration.
- Play continuous, full-screen 1920×1080 video stored locally.
- Set screen brightness to 200 nits, and match HP’s audio and wireless conditions as closely as possible: system audio at the image default, player audio at 100%, and wireless on but not connected.
- Time playback until the laptop shuts down. Record the test conditions and any differences from HP’s method.
Report the outcome as an observed runtime for that unit and protocol, not as a result for every OmniBook 5. HP’s announcement provides its reference method; the sources available here do not establish an independent runtime measurement for a tested retail unit.
How to compare battery-life claims
Headline hour figures are meaningful to compare only when the test methods are comparable. For each result, check the tested configuration, display brightness, whether playback was local or streamed, wireless state, audio setup, and whether the number is a manufacturer claim or an independent measurement. If methods differ, describe those differences rather than ranking the hour figures as though they came from the same test.
