Confirm that the regulator allows the kind of bet you plan to place, that the exact sportsbook brand and operating company appear on its approved list, and that you meet the state’s location, age, and other eligibility rules.
Check the state where you will place the bet
For an online or mobile wager, start with the state where you will physically be when you place it. Your home state and the state where the bet is made are not necessarily the same. North Carolina, for example, says a visitor may place a legal wager while physically in the state; licensed operators use device geolocation before accepting a bet. That is a North Carolina rule, not a nationwide guarantee. Check the relevant state regulator’s current guidance.

If you plan to bet in person, check the rules for the jurisdiction and venue where the retail wager would be placed. Do not assume permission for mobile betting also permits retail betting, or vice versa.
Find the official regulator and its current rules
Look for the state government’s gaming, lottery, or sports wagering regulator. On its official site, find the sports wagering rules or FAQ and the page for approved operators, licensees, or license verification. Search results and third-party directories can help you locate that government resource, but they do not make the licensing decision.
#1 Best Overall
Regulator pages may separate sportsbook operators from service providers, vendors, and other registrants. Indiana’s Gaming Commission, for example, provides verification resources for active sports wagering certificate holders as well as those other license categories. Make sure you are checking the category that covers the sportsbook operator, rather than treating every listed business as a sportsbook.
Verify the format and any limits
Read the rule that applies to the way you intend to wager: online or mobile, retail, or another limited arrangement. Look for boundaries involving where bets may be placed, eligible events, venues, or other conditions. A state’s approval of one format does not establish that every format is permitted.
Rank #2
There is no single nationwide answer that reliably describes every state’s current rules by format. The reviewed official examples illustrate how requirements can differ, but they do not establish a current legality table for all states and the District of Columbia.

Match the sportsbook to the regulator’s list
Check the regulator’s current approved or licensed list before opening or funding an account. Match both the public sportsbook brand and, where shown, its legal operating company. A similar name, related affiliate, platform provider, or app listing is not proof that the specific operator is licensed to take bets in your state.
Rank #3
North Carolina’s Commission list pairs operator entities with public brands and license numbers. Tennessee’s Sports Wagering Council maintains approved licensees and registrants and says it is illegal to bet with an operator that is not on its list. The Council’s guidance is direct: “The only way to ensure that you are betting with a licensed operator is to check this website before placing a bet.”
Check age, location, and eligibility separately
Licensing alone does not mean every person can bet in every place. Check the regulator’s current rules for minimum age, physical-location requirements, and any other eligibility restrictions that apply to your wager.
Rank #4
North Carolina’s official FAQ sets the minimum age for sports betting at 21, says the bettor need not be a resident if physically in the state, and explains that licensed operators geolocate devices before accepting bets. Those details apply to North Carolina; do not carry its age or location rules over to another jurisdiction.

- Identify your location. For a mobile wager, use the state where you will physically be at bet placement; for a retail wager, identify the state and venue.
- Open the state regulator’s official site. Find its sports wagering rules, FAQ, and license or approved-operator verification pages.
- Confirm the format and conditions. Check that the rules cover online/mobile or retail betting as applicable, and read any relevant event, venue, or location limits.
- Match the operator. Compare the sportsbook’s public brand and legal company with the regulator’s current operator list. Do not substitute a listing for a service provider or affiliate.
- Read personal eligibility rules. Verify the minimum age, physical-location requirement, and other conditions for the jurisdiction.
- Check the list again before placing a wager. License status and renewal information can change. Tennessee’s regulator publishes license and renewal dates and directs bettors to verify its list before betting.
If the status is unclear, pause
If the operator is missing, its legal entity does not match, or the regulator’s rules do not clearly cover your type of wager, do not treat marketing claims, registration access, or app availability as approval. Ask the state regulator for clarification before placing a bet. Indiana’s verification resources also describe routes for checking certain license-history matters using a gaming entity’s full legal name.

A third-party directory may be useful as a starting point, but it is not an official licensing decision. One Analytics describes its state information as drawing on an American Gaming Association tracker and state regulators, with quarterly refreshes; for an important decision, confirm the current rule and operator status directly with the state regulator.
