Log out anything you do not recognize. WhatsApp cannot tell you who opened the account, or the exact time or location of access, so the linked-device list is the account-level evidence WhatsApp exposes.
If you have been logged out or received a notice that your number was registered on another device, reclaim the account by registering your phone number again with the six-digit SMS or call code. WhatsApp says this automatically logs out every other device. Then protect the recovered account with two-step verification, a recovery email, a passkey and an app lock where available.

What WhatsApp can—and cannot—show you
WhatsApp’s account check is based on active linked sessions, not an access history. The Linked devices screen can show companion phones, browsers, desktop apps, tablets and other supported devices currently associated with your account. Depending on the app version, it may show a device name, platform or browser type and recent-use information.
A clean list is useful, but it is not proof that nobody ever viewed a message. It only shows the sessions WhatsApp currently exposes. WhatsApp states that it cannot provide information about who accessed your account or the time and location it was accessed. Treat an unfamiliar session as actionable evidence, but do not expect a name, IP address, map or forensic timeline.

The list also does not answer every physical-security question. Someone who briefly used an unlocked phone could read chats without creating a linked session. Likewise, a person who saw messages before you logged out a browser may leave no historical entry after that session ends. Use the list to find active companion access, then consider whether anyone had access to your phone itself.
Check linked devices before doing anything else
Open the linked-device list
- Open WhatsApp on the phone that still has access to your account.
- Open Settings and select Linked devices. On some phones, Linked devices is reached from the app menu rather than the main Settings page; use the label shown by your current WhatsApp version.
- Review each listed device, including the device type, browser or app label and the last-used information when it is displayed.
- Compare the list with computers, tablets and companion phones you actually use. Consider an old work computer, a shared browser or a phone you recently replaced before deciding that a session is unfamiliar.
How to interpret an entry
A device name may be a model name, a browser label or a generic description rather than a person’s identity. Match the platform and recent-use time to your own activity. For example, a desktop browser used yesterday may be yours even if the entry does not show the computer’s nickname. An Android tablet or companion phone should correspond to a device you deliberately linked. If you cannot verify an entry, treat it as unfamiliar instead of keeping it connected while you investigate.
Take a screenshot or note the entries if you need to explain the incident to contacts, but do not share private messages, registration codes or PINs while doing so. The linked-device screen is a control panel, not a detailed audit log.
Log out an unfamiliar session
Open the entry you do not recognize and choose Log out. If several entries are unfamiliar, remove each one. WhatsApp also provides a way to log out all active WhatsApp Web sessions from the phone. Logging out ends those companion sessions; it does not identify the person who used them.
Make a habit of checking this screen regularly. A browser session can remain available on a computer after you leave it, and someone with access to that computer may be able to use the open WhatsApp Web session. Do not approve a new QR-code linking request unless you initiated it and can identify the device.
After logging out, refresh the list and check again. A session you recognize can be left in place, but any device you no longer own, a public computer, or an entry you cannot explain should stay logged out. Logging out a companion device does not delete your chats from your primary phone and does not change your phone number.
Recognize signs that your number was registered elsewhere
An unexpected message such as “Your phone number was registered with WhatsApp on a new device” means the account registration state changed. This is more serious than an old linked browser because another phone may now be the primary device.

- Complete verification with the six-digit code delivered by SMS or phone call.
- After successful verification, check Linked devices again and remove anything you do not recognize.
WhatsApp says that when the owner logs back in, all other devices are logged out and the account is returned to the owner. Do not give the verification code to anyone who calls, texts or claims to be helping you.

Act promptly rather than waiting to see whether the notice disappears. The decisive requirement is control of the phone number, because WhatsApp sends the registration code by SMS or voice call. If you can receive that code, use the official app’s registration flow; do not follow a link supplied by a stranger or enter the code into a web form.
Recover an account you can no longer open
Re-register with your phone number
If another person has taken control, install or open the official WhatsApp app on your phone and register the same number. Enter the number in full international format and request the six-digit code by SMS or phone call. Enter that code only in the WhatsApp registration screen.
WhatsApp says that re-registering with the six-digit code automatically logs out all devices logged into the account. This is the recovery action that removes the other user’s active registration; changing a password or enabling a security feature later does not by itself remove somebody who has already taken over.

Once the account opens, immediately review Linked devices, remove unknown sessions and inspect your profile and group activity for changes you did not make. Recovery returns control of registration, but it does not tell you what the other user viewed or sent while they had access.
When an unknown two-step PIN blocks you
An attacker may have enabled two-step verification and set a PIN you do not know. WhatsApp explains that this can happen in rare cases. Continue with the SMS registration code, but if WhatsApp asks for the unknown two-step PIN, you may have to wait seven days and try again. Do not guess repeatedly or send the PIN to another person.
Entering the SMS code still logs out the other user. Once the waiting period ends and access is restored, immediately set your own two-step verification PIN and add a recovery email that you control. The waiting period is part of WhatsApp’s recovery process; a password change, app reinstall or linked-device logout does not bypass it.
Warn people who may be contacted
Tell family, friends, colleagues and important group members that the account may have been controlled by someone else. An unauthorized user could impersonate you in one-to-one chats or groups and request money, codes or personal information. Ask contacts to ignore unusual requests sent during the takeover and to verify urgent messages by another channel.

Protect the account after recovery
Enable two-step verification
Two-step verification adds a second authentication factor to the normal registration process. WhatsApp registration uses a six-digit SMS or call code; two-step verification adds an optional PIN that must also be supplied at relevant registration points.
- Open WhatsApp Settings.
- Open Account, then Two-step verification (the exact menu wording can vary by platform).
- Choose Enable and create a PIN that is not reused from your phone unlock code, banking login or email account.
- Add a recovery email address that you can access. Confirm the address carefully because it is used to help reset the PIN.
Never share the six-digit registration code or your two-step verification password/PIN. WhatsApp specifically says not to share either, even with friends or family. A person who asks for the code is attempting to obtain account access, regardless of the story they tell.
Two-step verification is preventative. It is most useful when enabled while you still control the account; WhatsApp says these security features cannot restore lost access or remove someone who is already using the account. Recover first, then configure the extra layer.

A passkey ties WhatsApp authentication to the phone’s security system, such as a fingerprint, face recognition or screen lock. It is different from a linked device: a linked device is a companion session that can access messages, while a passkey helps authenticate the account on a trusted device.
Open WhatsApp’s account or security settings and look for the Passkeys option. Follow the operating system’s biometric or screen-lock prompt. Availability depends on the WhatsApp release and the phone’s operating system, so the option may not appear on every device.
A passkey does not sign out an existing browser or tablet. If you suspect a companion session, log it out separately, then set up the passkey to strengthen future authentication on the trusted phone.
Turn on an app lock
An app lock helps when another person can physically unlock or handle your phone. In WhatsApp’s privacy settings, look for the app-lock control and choose the available biometric or device-authentication method. Set the automatic lock interval that fits your use.
An app lock does not recover a stolen account and does not terminate a remote linked session. It addresses physical access to the phone, so keep the phone’s operating system, screen lock and biometric settings protected as well.

Use only supported ways to link devices
WhatsApp identifies WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp for Windows and Mac, Android tablets, companion phones and AI glasses as supported categories. Link them through WhatsApp’s own Linked devices flow and the official app or website shown by WhatsApp.
Do not enter your phone number, registration code or two-step PIN into an unofficial “WhatsApp Web” page, modified client or third-party linking service. WhatsApp warns that unofficial apps and websites may put the account at risk. If a site asks you to scan a QR code while claiming to offer extra features, close it and check the linked-device list immediately afterward.
Supported categories can change as WhatsApp updates its apps, so rely on the options shown in the official application rather than a third-party guide promising hidden device types. A legitimate linking request should be one you started from your own WhatsApp account and can associate with a specific device.

The distinctions matter. Logging out a linked device is a containment action, while re-registering the number is an account-recovery action. Two-step verification and a passkey help prevent a future registration or strengthen trusted-device authentication. An app lock protects the local app from someone holding your phone. Choose more than one control when the incident involves more than one threat.
What to do when the linked-device list looks normal
A normal list means WhatsApp is not currently showing an unfamiliar companion session. It does not prove that nobody read messages in the past, that a contact did not use your unlocked phone, or that your phone number was never targeted.
Check for a registration notice, ask whether your phone recently lost cellular service, and review the security of your email account and phone lock. If you still control WhatsApp, enable two-step verification, add a recovery email, consider a passkey and use an app lock. These controls are preventative; they cannot restore access after a takeover.

Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Sharing the six-digit code: WhatsApp will not need you to read the code to a support agent, friend or family member. Keep it private.
- Waiting after an unexpected registration notice: Re-register promptly while you control the number.
- Assuming a password change is enough: WhatsApp says security-feature changes cannot remove someone already using the account. Re-register first if access was lost.
- Deleting the app instead of reclaiming the number: Uninstalling WhatsApp does not itself log out an attacker on another phone. Number re-registration is the recovery step.
- Trusting an unofficial client: Modified apps and imitation websites can expose credentials or create additional linked sessions.
- Failing to warn contacts: Friends may trust messages sent from your familiar number during a takeover.
- Guessing an unknown PIN repeatedly: Follow WhatsApp’s seven-day guidance when another person enabled two-step verification.
- Assuming a device label identifies a person: Names and browser labels describe sessions, not the individual behind them.
A practical response checklist
- Open Settings > Linked devices and identify every session.
- Log out every device you cannot verify.
- If WhatsApp says your number was registered on a new device, choose Log back in and complete number verification.
- If you were locked out, re-register with the full international number and six-digit SMS or call code.
- Keep the registration code and two-step PIN private.
- If an unknown PIN appears, follow the seven-day waiting instruction rather than guessing.
- Warn contacts that impersonation may have occurred.
- After recovery, enable two-step verification and add a recovery email.
- Add a passkey and app lock if your phone and WhatsApp version support them.
- Use only WhatsApp’s supported device-linking methods and check the linked-device list regularly.
