To check whether shares in your Indian demat account are pledged, review the latest transaction and holding statements from the Depository Participant (DP) that holds them, then check the account through the official depository or DP online service. Look for a pledge-related record against the specific security and quantity; a share can remain visible in your holdings while pledged. If you do not recognize a record, save it and ask your DP to explain it before assuming what happened.
What a pledge means in a demat account
A pledge is a security interest over shares in favour of a lender or another pledgee, often used as collateral. For securities held in a CDSL demat account, CDSL explains that pledged securities remain in the pledgor’s beneficial-owner (BO) account but are blocked from other transactions while the pledge is active. That is why seeing a share in your holdings does not, by itself, prove that it is free to use.

CDSL puts the point this way: “When dematerialized securities are pledged, they remain in the pledgor BO’s demat account but they are blocked so that the same cannot be used for any other transaction.” The practical implication is that two things can be true at once: the securities are still displayed as part of the account, and the pledged quantity is not available for other transactions while the pledge remains active.
CDSL describes pledge creation as involving a pledge request through the pledgor’s DP and acceptance by the pledgee’s DP. The record to check is therefore the pledge or blocked status against the relevant security and quantity—not simply whether the company’s shares still appear in the account. The terminology and screen layout can differ between DPs and depositories.

Active pledge and invocation are different
An active pledge does not necessarily remove shares from the pledgor’s account. If a pledge is invoked, CDSL says the securities move from the pledgor’s account to the pledgee’s account, and the pledgor is informed by the DP. A missing quantity may therefore call for a review of transaction records as well as the current holding statement; it should not automatically be interpreted as an active pledge still sitting in the account.
In other words, check both the present position and the account history. A pledge-related block may explain why a quantity remains visible but cannot be used for another transaction. A transfer or debit entry may help explain why a quantity is no longer in the account. If the entries do not make the sequence clear, ask the DP to explain the account-specific record rather than infer the event from a balance alone.
How to check whether your shares are pledged
- Identify the DP and depository for the account. Check your account statement or account-opening records. If you have more than one demat account, identify the one that holds the shares in question; checking a different account will not answer the question. The broker or platform you use for investing may not be the only relevant account detail: use the DP and account indicated on the statement for the particular holding.
- Download the latest transaction statement and holding statement. Use the account’s official DP or depository service. Review both: the holding statement shows the current account view, while the transaction statement can help explain activity over the statement period. Make sure the statements refer to the same demat account and are recent enough to reflect the period you want to check.
- Search the relevant security’s details. Look for a pledge, pledge setup, encumbrance, collateral, blocked status, or another pledge-related entry. Labels are not universal, so check the details rather than relying on one exact menu name or app screen. If an app gives only a summary, compare it with the downloadable statements or ask the DP where the underlying account record can be seen.
- Match the security and quantity. Confirm the company or security name and, if shown, its ISIN. Compare the quantity in the pledge-related record with the holding and with any pledge request or confirmation you have. Do not infer pledge status from the account’s total holding balance alone. If the record covers only part of a holding, note the pledged quantity separately from the total quantity.
- Check the official online account view as a second route. Use the depository’s official internet facility or app, or the DP’s official app or website. SEBI’s investor charter recommends online monitoring of holdings, and CDSL describes online facilities and e-CAS. The exact labels and navigation depend on the service; no single menu path applies to every account. Use the official service for the account rather than relying on a screenshot or message from someone else.
- Save the record if anything is unfamiliar. Download or preserve the statement and note the security, ISIN if available, quantity, date, and any reference or sequence number before contacting the DP. Keeping the record makes it easier to ask about a specific entry and to compare the DP’s explanation with the information shown in your account.
A quick way to check the entry
For each security you are concerned about, make a short comparison: the name or ISIN; the total quantity shown as held; the quantity identified as pledged or blocked, if a record shows one; the date of that record; and any reference number. Then compare those details with the current holding statement and the transaction statement. This is more useful than asking only whether “the shares” are pledged, because a record may concern a particular security or quantity rather than every holding in the account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the online view and the statements appear inconsistent, do not assume that one display is definitive. Save both views, including their dates, and ask the DP to reconcile them. The sources describe online monitoring and account statements as useful routes, but do not prescribe one universal screen, label, or update sequence for all services.

Which record should you use?
| Route | What it helps you check | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| DP transaction and holding statements | A record of account activity and the current holding view that you can retain and compare. | Review the security and quantity, not only the aggregate balance; use the transaction record to investigate changes. |
| Official depository facility or DP app/site | An online account view for monitoring holdings and related information. | Screen labels and paths vary. If the view is unclear, confirm the underlying record with the DP. |
| DP support | An explanation of an unclear or unfamiliar account entry and details available for the pledge request and acceptance. | Ask about the particular security, quantity, date, pledgee, and any available reference or sequence number. |
These routes complement one another: statements provide records to retain, online services offer an account view, and the DP can explain an entry or the process for raising a discrepancy. Use the route that answers the question in front of you: a statement is useful when you need a dated record; an official online view helps you monitor the account; and DP support is the next step when a label, quantity, or transaction does not make sense.
SEBI’s investor charter tells investors to verify account activity carefully: “As Investors you are required to verify the transaction statement carefully for all debits and credits in your account.” That advice matters here because pledge status is only one part of the account check. A transaction statement may also show activity that helps explain a changed holding or an unfamiliar transfer.
Why shares may still appear in holdings—or appear blocked
The shares are visible, but you suspect a pledge
Visibility alone does not rule out a pledge. For a CDSL account, the securities remain in the pledgor’s BO account while blocked from other transactions. Check for the pledge-related status and its quantity, rather than treating the visible holding as proof that the shares are unpledged.

Conversely, the fact that shares are visible does not establish that every share of that security is pledged. Compare the specific quantity identified in the pledge record with the account’s holding. If you cannot find a separate status or cannot tell what quantity an entry concerns, ask the DP to identify the record for that security and explain what it applies to.

A quantity is lower than you expected
Compare the current holding with transaction entries and dates. An active pledge and an invoked pledge are not the same: CDSL says invocation transfers the securities to the pledgee’s account, with the pledgor informed by the DP. Ask the DP to explain the specific account record if the movement is unclear.
Look for the sequence rather than relying on one number in isolation: what the holding statement shows now, what the transaction statement records, and whether there is an associated pledge request or confirmation available to you. If you find a debit or credit you do not recognize, report it to the DP promptly. Do not label a missing quantity an active pledge unless the account records support that conclusion.
An app shows a collateral or broker-related reference
Do not treat every collateral reference as proof that a pledge was created on your own demat account. SEBI has described broker-misuse cases in which client securities were transferred to a broker or client unpaid securities account and then pledged by the broker. A pledge on an investor’s account, a re-pledge in a regulated collateral chain, and a transfer out of the client’s account describe different events. Inspect the actual transaction and pledge records and ask the DP which account and securities the entry concerns.

You signed a DDPI
Signing a Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction (DDPI) does not, by itself, establish that a particular security is pledged. SEBI’s October 6, 2022 clarification concerns DDPI use for securities delivery or settlement and pledging or re-pledging. Check the account-specific pledge and transaction records instead of drawing a conclusion about an individual security from the existence of a DDPI.
Keep the question specific: whether a named security and quantity in your account have a pledge-related record, not whether a general instruction exists. If you are unsure how an entry relates to the DDPI, ask the DP to explain the connection using the relevant account record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you do not recognize a pledge
- Preserve the evidence. Save the relevant statement or account view, and record the security name, ISIN if shown, quantity, date, and reference number. Keep copies of later messages and statements too. If two official views differ, save each one with its date so the discrepancy can be described precisely.
- Contact the DP promptly through its official channel. Ask it to explain the entry and provide the pledge request and acceptance details available for your account. Ask who the pledgee is, when the record was created, what quantity it covers, and which reference or sequence number identifies it. Include the security and account details needed to locate the record, but do not send passwords or OTPs.
- Ask how to dispute or correct the record. Request the DP’s process for challenging an unrecognized pledge or correcting an inaccurate account entry. Keep the DP’s response with your records. The relevant question is what process applies to the particular record; do not assume a general online label by itself tells you how to dispute it.
- Check the rest of the account for activity you do not recognize. SEBI’s investor charter tells investors to verify transaction statements for debits and credits. Report any unauthorized debit or credit to the DP promptly. Review the statement beyond the single security that prompted your check so that other unexplained account activity is not overlooked.
- Escalate an unresolved discrepancy. If the DP does not resolve the issue, approach the depository. SEBI’s investor charter also points investors to its online SCORES grievance system. Keep the statements and copies of communications so you can describe what you asked, what information was provided, and what remains unclear.
Do not make a trading or legal decision solely from an unclear app label. Confirm the underlying account record with the DP. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal response deadline, so ask the DP about its process rather than assuming a fixed timeframe. A clear record of the security, quantity, date, and reference number will help keep the enquiry focused, but it does not replace the DP’s explanation of the account-specific entry.
Protect your account while checking
- Open the depository or DP service directly through its official channel rather than following an unexpected link or message.
- Do not share passwords, depository login credentials, or one-time passwords (OTPs) with anyone claiming to investigate a pledge.
- Keep your registered phone number and email address current so account alerts can reach you.
- Retain statements and communications so you can compare account records and refer to specific dates and quantities when seeking help.
- Use account alerts and online monitoring as aids to noticing activity, while checking the statement and underlying account record when a notification or display is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I see pledged shares in my demat account?
Check the latest holding and transaction statements for the relevant security and quantity, then compare them with the official depository or DP online view. Look for a pledge-related or blocked status; exact labels and screen paths vary. If the record is unclear, ask the DP to identify the underlying entry.
Can pledged shares still show in my holdings?
Yes. CDSL says pledged dematerialized securities remain in the pledgor’s BO account while blocked from other transactions. Their visibility in the holding view alone does not show whether they are free to use.
Why are my shares blocked in my demat account?
A pledge may block securities from other transactions while it is active. Check the security and quantity in your account statements and official online view, and ask your DP to explain an unfamiliar block. Do not assume the cause from a brief app label alone.
Does a pledged share disappear from my demat account?
Not necessarily. In CDSL’s explanation, an active pledge leaves the securities in the pledgor’s account but blocks them. If the pledge is invoked, CDSL says the securities move to the pledgee’s account and the pledgor is informed by the DP.
Does signing a DDPI mean that my shares are pledged?
No. SEBI’s October 6, 2022 DDPI clarification concerns use for securities delivery or settlement and pledging or re-pledging; the existence of a DDPI does not establish that a particular security is pledged. Check the account-specific record.
What should I do if I do not recognize a pledge entry?
Save the statement or account view and note the security, ISIN if shown, quantity, date, and reference number. Contact the DP through an official channel for the pledge request and acceptance details available, the pledgee, and the process for disputing or correcting the record. Report any unauthorized debit or credit, and escalate an unresolved discrepancy to the depository or through SEBI’s SCORES grievance system.
The Bottom Line
To check whether shares in your demat account are pledged, verify the relevant security and quantity in the latest transaction and holding statements, then compare them with the official depository or DP online record. A pledged share may still appear in holdings but be blocked; an invoked pledge is different and may move the securities to the pledgee’s account. If an entry is unfamiliar, save the details, contact your DP, and escalate an unresolved discrepancy through the depository or SEBI’s grievance route.
