AMD documents ROCm support for the Radeon RX 9060 XT in WSL, but that does not establish that Ollama’s standard Linux installer will enable GPU acceleration there. Ollama’s installer treats WSL2 differently from a regular Linux installation, and a June 2026 user report describes an AMD WSL2 setup that remained CPU-only. The available evidence supports a compatibility explainer—not a reproducible first-person account of getting this card running.
What is documented for the RX 9060 XT
Ollama lists the Radeon RX 9060 XT among its Linux GPUs supported through ROCm and says, “Ollama requires the AMD ROCm v7 driver on Linux.” That is a Linux requirement, not a promise that its installer will configure AMD acceleration in WSL. Ollama’s current Windows AMD GPU list does not name the RX 9060 XT. Ollama’s GPU support documentation

AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 WSL compatibility matrix does name the RX 9060 XT. For that matrix, AMD pairs the card with Adrenalin Edition 26.1.1 for WSL2 and lists Ubuntu 24.04.2 or Ubuntu 22.04 with WSL2 Linux kernel 5.15. These are version-specific entries; a different ROCm matrix or driver release may specify a different combination. AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 WSL compatibility matrix

AMD describes ROCDXG as a user-mode library that enables ROCm compute in WSL. Its WSL guide says production support is being introduced with Adrenalin 26.2.2 plus ROCm 7.2.1. That statement and the separate 7.2.1 compatibility matrix are release-specific context, not a recipe to combine indiscriminately: check the matrix and instructions for the exact driver and ROCm release you plan to install. Ollama’s Linux install script has a special WSL2 branch. It checks for NVIDIA passthrough, then exits before reaching the usual Linux AMD hardware-detection and ROCm-package installation flow. As a result, AMD’s runtime exposing a GPU to WSL does not by itself show that the standard Ollama installer will add the libraries or select that GPU. The script’s behavior can change over time, so check the current version before relying on it. Ollama’s Linux install script
What the available failure report does—and does not—show
An Ollama GitHub issue opened June 5, 2026, titled “install.sh: AMD GPU on WSL2 (ROCDXG) not detected — installs CPU-only,” reports one user’s AMD WSL2 installation ending up CPU-only despite reported ROCm device visibility. It corroborates the possibility of an installer integration problem; a single report does not establish that all Ollama releases, manual installation methods, or RX 9060 XT systems behave the same way. How to assess a setup before calling it GPU-enabled
A credible account of this configuration needs to identify the exact Windows build, WSL version, Ubuntu release, AMD Windows driver, ROCm version, Ollama version, and installation route. It also needs runtime evidence that Ollama selected the GPU, rather than relying only on AMD device visibility inside WSL. No verified first-person installation sequence or GPU-offload result is established here, so there is no safe set of commands to present as a proven RX 9060 XT recipe.
Ollama’s troubleshooting documentation notes that driver compatibility and Linux access to /dev/kfd through video or render permissions can affect AMD GPU discovery. Those native Linux details are relevant checks, but their mapping to WSL’s GPU device exposure should not be assumed to be identical. Ollama’s troubleshooting guide

How the documented routes differ
| Route | What the sources establish | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|
| Ollama Linux in WSL2 with AMD ROCm | AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 WSL matrix names the RX 9060 XT and specifies WSL2 driver and Ubuntu/kernel combinations. Ollama lists the card for Linux ROCm. | The standard Linux installer’s WSL2 branch skips the ordinary AMD ROCm setup path; successful GPU offload for a particular manual or modified route is not established. |
| Ollama’s native Windows app | Ollama documents Windows AMD support for ROCm v7/HIP7-capable drivers or Vulkan-capable AMD drivers. | The current Windows AMD card list does not name the RX 9060 XT, so these sources do not establish native Windows support for this specific card. |
Neither route has a documented comparative performance result here. The compatibility lists and installer behavior do not establish tokens per second, model fit, or stability on an individual machine. Ollama GPU documentation AMD WSL matrix Ollama install script Ollama Windows documentation
