Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse nbn’s official Check address tool first, entering the complete street address for the exact premise. The result tells you the network status at that location. If the premise is ready to connect, you must still ask a retail internet provider whether it can supply a 500 Mbps plan there, because provider participation and service qualification determine what can actually be ordered.
nbn lists its Home Fast II wholesale tier at 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload on fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connections. That wholesale listing is not a guarantee that every provider offers the tier at every connected address, nor does it promise a particular household’s measured speed.

What “NBN 500 available” actually means
When people ask, “Can I get NBN 500 at my address?” they are usually asking two different questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Can the premise receive an nbn service? The address checker answers this by showing the rollout or connection status for the location.
- Can a provider sell a 500 Mbps plan there? The provider must confirm this against its own service qualification systems, available access technology and participating-provider arrangements.
Those checks are related but not interchangeable. An address can be connected to the nbn network while a particular provider, speed tier or configuration is not orderable at that premise. Conversely, a status such as planned or more work required means the address is not ready for an immediate order, even though the network may be intended for it.

nbn’s own guidance says to check the address before contacting a home internet provider. Its speed-plan page likewise tells customers to check the address to see what is available at their location.
Step-by-step: check your exact address
1. Open the official nbn checker
Go directly to https://www.nbnco.com.au/check-address. This is the appropriate first step for questions such as “Which NBN speed is available at my house?” The lookup is based on the premise, not merely the suburb or postcode.
2. Enter the full street address
Use the complete address requested by the form, including the street number, street name, suburb, state or territory and postcode. For an apartment, townhouse, office conversion or other multi-premise building, use the specific unit or premise details rather than only the building’s street address. A result for a neighbouring property does not establish eligibility for yours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the displayed address before relying on the result. If the tool has selected a similarly named street, a different suburb or the wrong unit, run the lookup again with the corrected details.
3. Read the premise status, not just the map
The checker can show statuses including ready to connect, more work required, planned for the address, not currently available, or not available in the building. Treat the wording as a description of the network position at that premise. It is not a list of every retail plan that providers sell there.
4. Reposition the map pin if the address is missing
If the search cannot find the address, use the map option provided by the checker and move the pin to the correct building or lot. A failed text lookup is not proof that nbn service is unavailable; the checker specifically provides the map as an alternative way to identify the premise.
After moving the pin, verify that the selected location is your actual building. Do not select a nearby property simply to obtain a result, because the status and technology can differ between adjoining premises.

5. Contact a retail provider after a connection-ready result
Once the checker says the premise is ready to connect, contact a phone or internet provider and ask for a service qualification check on that exact address. State that you want a 500 Mbps download plan and ask the representative to confirm whether that tier can be ordered at the premise, rather than assuming that a general “NBN available” message includes every speed.
6. Confirm the access technology and advertised speeds
Ask the provider which nbn access technology the order will use and what download and upload speeds are advertised for the proposed plan. nbn lists the 500/50 Mbps Home Fast II tier on FTTP and HFC. The provider’s qualification result determines whether that tier is available for your particular connection.
7. Record the offer’s conditions before ordering
Before accepting a plan, note the monthly charge, contract or cancellation conditions, installation requirements, data policy and the provider’s typical busy-period speed information if supplied. Current retail prices and named offers change independently of nbn’s wholesale speed-plan page, so verify them directly with the provider on the day you order.
How to interpret every address-checker status
| Checker status | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Ready to connect | The premise is shown as ready for an nbn connection. | Ask a participating provider to qualify the exact address for a 500 Mbps plan, then confirm technology and advertised upload and download speeds. |
| More work required | Additional network work is required before the premise can be treated as ready. | Follow the status guidance, monitor the checker for an updated result and do not assume a 500 Mbps order can be placed immediately. |
| Planned for the address | The address appears in a planned rollout or connection state rather than an immediately orderable state. | Check the address again when the status changes. A planned listing is not an immediate retail-service approval. |
| Not currently available | The checker does not show a currently available nbn connection at the premise. | Use the information provided by the checker and recheck for a later status change; a provider cannot confirm an immediate 500 Mbps order unless the premise becomes serviceable. |
| Not available in the building | The result identifies a building-level limitation rather than a normal ready-to-connect result. | Ask the provider to verify the building and individual premise details. Do not substitute a result from a nearby address. |
Statuses can change as rollout or remediation work progresses. The checker result and the provider’s service-qualification result should therefore be treated as separate checkpoints in the order process.
What the 500 Mbps tier includes
On nbn’s residential wholesale speed-plan information, Home Fast II is listed at 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload for FTTP and HFC. “500” refers to the advertised download tier; it does not mean that every download, application or device will sustain exactly 500 Mbps at every moment.
| Item | Published figure or scope | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Home Fast II download | 500 Mbps | Use this as the wholesale download tier to ask a provider about. |
| Home Fast II upload | 50 Mbps | Check that the retail plan’s upload speed matches the service you need; download speed alone does not describe the upstream capacity. |
| Access technologies listed by nbn | FTTP and HFC | Have the provider confirm the technology serving your exact premise and whether the tier is orderable on it. |
These figures describe the nbn wholesale plan listing. They do not establish that your address uses FTTP or HFC, and they do not replace the checker’s premise result or a provider’s qualification.
How to compare provider responses after the lookup
If more than one provider serves the address, compare offers only after each has confirmed that the exact premise qualifies. A general statement that the provider sells an NBN 500 plan elsewhere is not enough.

| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Address eligibility | Can you provision a 500 Mbps plan at this exact unit or premise? | Eligibility can vary by address, building and service qualification. |
| Access technology | Will the order use FTTP, HFC or another technology identified by the qualification check? | The technology determines how the service is delivered and which nbn tier can be ordered. |
| Advertised speeds | What are the plan’s download and upload speeds? | A “500” label usually describes download; the upload figure must be checked separately. |
| Busy-period performance | What typical busy-period speed information do you publish for this plan? | Provider-reported typical speeds can help set expectations beyond the headline tier. |
| Price and conditions | What is the current monthly price and what conditions, discounts or cancellation terms apply? | Retail pricing and conditions are provider-specific and can change. |
| Installation and equipment | What installation steps or equipment are required after ordering? | These are service-use or connection details, not part of the online eligibility lookup. |
Ask the provider to repeat the result using the complete address, especially when the property is in a multi-dwelling building. Keep the written offer or order summary so you can compare it with another provider’s response without relying on memory.

Questions to ask before you accept a 500 Mbps plan
Use the provider conversation to pin down the difference between a headline tier and an orderable service. Ask the representative to confirm the exact unit, lot or premise number used in the qualification check. If the provider only searches by suburb or postcode, request a full address check before proceeding.
- Is the 500 Mbps download tier available now, or is the address merely shown as nbn-ready?
- What upload speed is included, and is it 50 Mbps on the proposed plan?
- Which access technology was returned for this premise?
- What typical busy-period download speed does the provider publish?
- What monthly price, discount expiry, contract term, cancellation fee or other conditions apply?
- Are installation steps or provider-supplied equipment required after the order?
These questions prevent a common mistake: treating an nbn network status as if it were a retail product quote. Save the provider’s email, chat transcript or order summary, including the date of the qualification, so you can refer back to the precise offer if another representative gives a different answer.
Special checks for apartments and other multi-premise buildings
Multi-dwelling properties need extra care because the street address may identify a building rather than an individual serviceable premise. Enter the unit details in the nbn checker, then ask the provider to qualify the same unit. A ready result for one apartment does not prove that every unit, shop or converted space in the building has the same status.
If the checker says the building is unavailable, do not work around the message by choosing a neighbouring address. Ask the provider whether the limitation applies to the whole building or to the specific premise record. If the address has recently changed, been subdivided or been renumbered, the map-pin method and a provider’s manual investigation may be needed to identify the correct record.

Why a speed test may not show exactly 500 Mbps
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Measuring Broadband Australia report for April 2026 recorded an average download speed of 482.9 Mbps for the 500 Mbps plan category, equivalent to 96.6% of plan speed. That is a category-level measurement across the report’s tested services, not a promise for a particular address, provider, household or time of day.
Actual performance can vary because of:
- the nbn network configuration serving the premise;
- congestion or demand during busy periods;
- the provider’s network design and capacity;
- the router, modem-router, connection box and internal network setup;
- Wi-Fi conditions, Ethernet link capability and cabling; and
- the performance limits of the device, server or application being used.
For that reason, do not reject a valid 500 Mbps qualification solely because one wireless test is below the headline number. Test conditions matter, and the checker’s job is to establish premise status rather than measure throughput.

What to do when the result and the provider answer conflict
The checker cannot find the address
Try the full address again and use the map-pin method. Confirm the selected premise rather than choosing a nearby property. If the map also cannot identify the building, retain the exact wording or screen result and ask a provider to investigate the address during service qualification.
The checker says ready, but the provider cannot sell 500 Mbps
This is possible because “ready to connect” describes the premise’s network status, while the provider must confirm participation, technology and service qualification for its own retail plan. Ask whether the provider can offer a different speed tier, whether another participating provider serves the premise, and which access technology was returned by the qualification check.
The result says more work required or planned
Do not place an order on the assumption that the future state is already active. Follow the checker’s status guidance and recheck the address after the status changes. A provider can explain what it can currently order, but a planned or incomplete state is not the same as immediate 500 Mbps availability.
The building is marked unavailable
Check the unit, lot or premise details carefully. In a multi-dwelling property, the building-level result may not be resolved by entering only the street address. Ask the provider to qualify the individual premise and explain whether the limitation affects the whole building or the specific unit.
The provider quotes a different speed
Ask the provider to distinguish the advertised plan speed from the speed available on the qualified access technology. Compare the stated download and upload figures with the 500/50 Home Fast II listing, but rely on the provider’s address-specific qualification for what can actually be ordered.
Equipment is not needed to check eligibility
You do not need a router, modem-router, nbn connection box or Ethernet cable to run the online address lookup. Those items may affect installation and later service performance, but they are not prerequisites for entering an address and reading its premise status.

A concise decision checklist
- Open the official nbn Check address page.
- Enter the complete street and premise address.
- Verify that the returned map location is your actual property.
- Read the status: ready, work required, planned or unavailable.
- If no result appears, reposition the map pin instead of assuming the network is absent.
- For a ready premise, contact a provider and request a 500 Mbps qualification check for that exact address.
- Confirm the access technology and both advertised download and upload speeds.
- Compare provider pricing, conditions and typical busy-period information directly with the provider.
- Keep in mind that the 500 Mbps tier is a plan specification, while measured speed depends on network, provider, equipment, setup and device conditions.
The reliable answer to “Is NBN 500 available at my address?” is therefore a two-part result: the official nbn checker must show a serviceable premise, and a provider must confirm that its 500 Mbps retail plan is orderable for that exact location.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if NBN 500 is available at my address?
Use nbn’s official Check address page and enter the complete premise address. Read the status, then ask a retail provider to qualify a 500 Mbps plan for that exact location. The checker confirms network status; the provider confirms whether its retail tier can be ordered.
Does “ready to connect” guarantee I can buy NBN 500?
No. Ready to connect means the premise is shown as ready for an nbn service. Provider participation, access technology and service qualification still determine whether a particular 500 Mbps plan is available.
What upload speed comes with NBN 500?
nbn lists its Home Fast II wholesale tier at 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload on FTTP and HFC. Confirm the retail plan’s advertised upload speed with the provider before ordering.
What if the nbn checker cannot find my address?
Enter the full address again and use the checker’s map option to reposition the pin over the correct building or lot. A failed text lookup alone does not prove that nbn service is unavailable.
Can I get NBN 500 in an apartment?
Possibly, but check the specific unit rather than only the building street address. Ask the provider to qualify the exact apartment, because statuses and available tiers can differ between premises in the same building.
Why is my speed test below 500 Mbps?
The 500 Mbps figure is the advertised plan tier. Performance can vary with busy-period demand, network and provider configuration, equipment, Wi-Fi or Ethernet conditions, and the device or server. The ACCC’s April 2026 report measured an average of 482.9 Mbps, or 96.6% of plan speed, for the 500 Mbps category.
The Bottom Line
Check the exact premise on nbn’s official address tool, then obtain an address-specific 500 Mbps qualification from a participating provider. Confirm the access technology, 500/50 speeds, price and conditions before ordering.
