A “Limited ad earnings” notice means your stream is still eligible for ads, but some advertisers may avoid it; YouTube says you should expect lower ad revenue than on content suitable to all advertisers. The notice does not show how much revenue you lost—or prove that it caused a particular change. To investigate, compare estimated ad revenue and ad-delivery metrics across comparable periods in YouTube Studio, then account for changes in views, audience, and ad availability.
1. Confirm the stream’s ad status in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Find the stream and inspect its Notices column. A “Limited ad earnings” notice indicates a suitability restriction, not that ads are completely disabled. YouTube explains that brands choosing to advertise only on safer content will not run ads on the stream, and that creators should expect lower ad revenue than on content suitable to all advertisers. - Note when the notice appeared and whether the stream was in an ad-suitability check. Do not treat revenue from a check-in-progress as normal ad delivery: YouTube says ads do not run during the check. Its published guidance says checks usually take less than 20 minutes and at most one hour, while some monetization decisions may take up to 24 hours; these are guidance, not guaranteed service levels. 2. Find the ad-specific numbers
- In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the Revenue tab.
- Choose the stream or content-level revenue report if it is available for that stream and date range.
- Separate Estimated ad revenue from Estimated revenue. Estimated revenue covers all revenue types; estimated ad revenue is the ad-focused measure relevant to an ad-suitability question. YouTube Help: Understand ad revenue analytics.
- For matching date ranges, record ad revenue, views, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions, playback-based CPM, and audience geography. If the report does not expose a metric for the selected stream or period, do not infer it from another metric.
3. Read the metrics without confusing them

YouTube describes RPM as useful but not a complete account of a creator’s revenue. For this diagnosis, do not treat a change in RPM alone as proof that limited ads reduced ad earnings. YouTube Help: Understand ad revenue analytics.

4. Compare like with like
For a continuous stream, compare the same stream across date ranges with similar duration and times of day. Keep the unit consistent and make the calculation clear. For example, divide estimated ad revenue by views to compare ad revenue per view, or by estimated monetized playbacks to compare ad revenue per monetized playback. These are practical comparisons based on YouTube’s metric definitions, not a YouTube-prescribed causal test.

- Ad revenue per monetized playback: helps examine yield among playbacks that included ads.
- Monetized playbacks as a share of views: can reveal whether fewer views are receiving ads.
- Ad impressions per monetized playback: can reveal changes in the number of ads served during ad-bearing playbacks.
- Playback-based CPM: provides context on advertiser-side pricing, not creator take-home earnings.
Record the monetization status and check timing for each period. If the stream’s content, title, thumbnail, description, tags, stream configuration, or audience mix changed, note that too: those differences can complicate the comparison. The status plus a lower matched-period ad revenue rate is consistent with limited ads reducing revenue, but it cannot establish the size of the effect or prove what caused it.

5. Rule out other causes of a revenue swing
Not every view receives an ad. YouTube identifies factors including ad availability, viewer geography, targeting, recent ad exposure, Premium status, and advertiser-friendliness as reasons ad delivery and CPM can vary. Seasonal advertiser demand and changes in ad formats can also affect results. YouTube Help: Understand ad revenue analytics.
- Views changed: total ad revenue can move with audience volume even if yield is similar.
- Audience geography or view mix changed: different audiences can receive different ad opportunities and advertiser demand.
- Monetized playbacks changed relative to views: investigate ad availability and the share of views that actually received ads.
- CPM changed: advertiser cost may have shifted independently of your limited-ad status.
- Other income changed: estimated revenue and RPM include sources beyond ads.
- Recent estimates are unsettled: YouTube says estimated earnings can be adjusted for invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and some ad campaign types. Its guidance describes adjustments after about one week and again in the middle of the following month. YouTube Help: YouTube partner earnings overview.
YouTube does not publish a typical percentage or dollar loss for limited-ad 24/7 streams in the cited guidance. A Studio notice supports the direction of the effect, not a universal estimate of its amount.

6. Check monetization setup and appeal an incorrect status
Verify Watch Page monetization
For long-form and live-stream Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium earnings, Watch Page monetization must be enabled through the Watch Page Monetization Module. Confirm the stream’s monetization setup before attributing a low ad result to suitability. YouTube Help: Choose how you want to monetize.

Review the stream and its packaging
YouTube’s advertiser-friendly review considers the content as a whole, including the live stream or video and its title, thumbnail, description, and tags. For scheduled live streams, YouTube says it checks the title, description, thumbnail, and tags before the stream goes live. YouTube Help: Best practices for creating advertiser-friendly content.

Request review when appropriate
If you believe the decision is wrong and the option is available, request a human review through the stream’s monetization status in Studio. Reviewers assess the content as a whole; YouTube identifies context, focus, tone, realism, and graphicness as review principles. Follow the appeal option and instructions shown in Studio.
