How to Check Whether Heat Is Slowing Down Your Phone

The most dependable check is a before-and-after test: run the same demanding task while the phone is warm, record the slowdown and any thermal warnings, cool the phone safely, then repeat under similar conditions. If performance returns after cooling, heat is a strong contributor. That comparison is more useful than chasing one temperature number, because throttling thresholds and sensor readings differ by model.

Built-in diagnostics can support the result. Pixel 6 and later have a “Phone is very warm” check in Settings. iPhones signal thermal mitigation through warnings, charging behavior, display brightness, camera limits and performance changes rather than one universal consumer CPU-temperature reading.

What thermal throttling looks like

A phone protects its processor, battery and other components by reducing power when internal temperature rises. The reduction can be brief or gradual: the system may lower CPU or GPU speed, reduce a game’s frame rate, pause charging or disable a heat-producing feature. The phone can feel warm without being faulty; the useful evidence is a repeatable performance change that disappears after cooling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common signs include:

  • Frame-rate drops, stutter or slower graphics in a game.
  • Longer app launches, video exports or photo-processing times.
  • Delayed touch response or generally sluggish interaction.
  • Charging that becomes very slow, pauses or displays a hold message.
  • Automatic screen dimming or a screen that briefly goes black.
  • A camera feature, flash or high-performance mode becoming unavailable.
  • A warning that the phone must cool down.
  • Reduced speaker volume or progressively lower scrolling frame rates on some iPhones.

Any one symptom can have another cause. A controlled cool-and-repeat test is what separates heat-related slowdown from an old battery, background work, weak network service or a software problem. Thermal management can also begin before a consumer-facing warning appears, so a phone does not have to display a message for heat to affect performance.

A controlled five-step check

1. Reproduce the slowdown

Use the same workload that normally causes trouble. Examples include a demanding 3D game, a long camera recording, turn-by-turn navigation in direct sun, hotspot tethering, high-quality streaming, a large upload or download, or a transfer performed while charging. Apple and Google both identify activities such as these as common sources of warmth.

Write down the conditions: approximate room or outdoor temperature, whether the phone is in direct sun, battery percentage, whether it is plugged in, the case being used, network type and the exact app or game. Note whether the phone was just updated, restored or backed up. Do not change several variables between the warm and cool runs. If a case is normally fitted, keep it on for both runs; if you remove it to cool the phone, record that change.

Use a repeatable starting point. For a game, use the same level or scene. For a camera test, use the same resolution and frame-rate setting and record for the same duration. For navigation or streaming, use the same route, video quality and connection where practical. This makes a performance difference easier to attribute to temperature rather than workload variation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Record observable performance

Choose measurements you can repeat without special equipment. Note whether a game becomes visibly choppy, how long an app or export takes, whether touches are delayed, whether the screen dims, and whether charging slows. If a game displays a frame-rate counter, record the range before and after the slowdown; otherwise use the same scene or level and describe the stutter consistently.

Also note feature changes. A camera may refuse a flash or a high-resolution mode, and a charging screen may indicate that charging is on hold. Record the exact warning text, such as Apple’s “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down,” rather than paraphrasing it. A sudden switch to a low-power state, a paused feature or an automatic shutdown on a Pixel is also useful evidence of thermal mitigation.

Time the test with the phone’s clock or a stopwatch if you are comparing an export, app launch or file transfer. You do not need laboratory precision; consistency matters more than a single exact figure. Avoid interpreting a network transfer rate by itself, because server load and signal quality can change independently of temperature.

3. Check the phone’s thermal status

Use the platform-specific checks in the next sections. A status message is stronger evidence than touch alone, but the absence of a message does not prove that no mitigation is occurring. Manufacturers can reduce performance before showing a consumer warning, and many Android models do not expose a thermal screen to owners.

Check while the symptom is occurring and again after cooling. A history view, where available, can show whether the phone registered a warmer state even if the warning has already cleared. Do not compare a temperature number from one brand with a number from another: sensors may measure different parts of the device and use different severity thresholds.

4. Cool the phone safely

Stop the demanding task. Move the device out of direct sunlight, away from a hot vehicle or other heat source, and remove it from a thick insulating surface. If it is charging and warm, disconnect the charger unless the phone’s instructions tell you otherwise. Leave it unused until it feels normal again. Do not put it in a freezer or against an ice pack; condensation can damage electronics.

Cooling should be gradual and ordinary: shade, airflow and time are preferable to an abrupt temperature change. Do not keep gaming, recording or tethering merely to see how far the phone can go after a warning. If the operating system requests a shutdown or gives charging instructions, follow them.

5. Repeat the same workload

Run the same game scene, recording, navigation route or transfer with a similar battery level, connection and ambient condition. Compare the observable results, not just how the phone feels. If possible, perform more than one warm/cool cycle; a pattern that repeats is more persuasive than a single run.

Repeatable observation What it suggests
Performance is poor while hot and returns after cooling Heat is a strong contributor; the operating system likely reduced power or a heat-sensitive feature.
The phone stays slow after cooling Investigate battery condition, background activity, network performance, storage pressure or software faults as well as heat.
Only the network task slows Check signal quality, hotspot conditions and transfer-server performance before blaming the processor.
Only one app slows while other tasks remain normal Check that app’s settings, updates and workload; an app-specific bug or limit may be involved.
Charging pauses or the display dims only during the hot run The phone is applying a protective thermal response even if no CPU temperature is shown.

How to check an iPhone

Use warnings and behavior, not a universal temperature number

Apple’s consumer guidance does not provide one model-independent CPU-temperature number that tells an owner whether an iPhone is throttling. Instead, watch for the warning “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down” and for changes in system behavior.

When an iPhone or iPad’s interior is outside its normal range, Apple says charging can slow or stop, the display can dim or go black, cellular radios can enter a low-power state, camera functions can be disabled, and some apps can show lower frame rates or longer processing times. Those effects are direct clues during the warm run. They should improve after the device returns to a normal temperature.

Apple designs iPhone and iPad for an ambient operating range of 0 to 35 °C (32 to 95 °F). Ambient temperature is the surrounding air, not an internal throttling threshold. Direct sunlight, a hot dashboard or a confined vehicle can drive internal temperature higher than the air reading suggests.

Check battery-related performance management

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple’s battery-performance guidance says management considers device temperature, state of charge and battery impedance. In stronger management states, an owner may see longer app launches, lower scrolling frame rates, dimming, reduced speaker volume, gradual frame-rate reductions and a disabled camera flash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery management and thermal throttling can overlap. A worn battery can cause performance limits even when the phone is cool, so compare the Battery Health information with the cool-and-repeat result. A performance recovery that tracks cooling points toward heat; a persistent limit at normal temperature warrants battery or software investigation. Battery percentage also matters: run the comparison at similar charge levels because state of charge is one input to Apple’s management system.

What app developers can observe

Apple’s developer documentation describes NSProcessInfoThermalStateSerious as a high thermal state in which the system takes steps that reduce performance. The critical state means thermal conditions are significantly affecting performance and the device needs to cool. Apps can respond by reducing CPU/GPU work or lowering a target frame rate, for example from 60 FPS to 30 FPS.

This is developer-facing information rather than a universal setting for owners. If an app exposes its own thermal or performance indicator, treat it as supporting evidence and still perform the same workload after cooling. A developer can reduce work proactively, so an app’s lower frame rate may be an intentional response rather than a fault in the app.

How to check a Pixel and other Android phones

Pixel 6 and later: use the built-in diagnostic

On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm. Google says the temperature diagnostics provide a current state and history. Record what the screen reports during the warm workload, then check again after the phone has cooled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Pixel temperature guidance says a hot Pixel may reduce CPU performance. Higher thermal states can trigger low-power mode, temporary performance limits, paused features and, at a threshold, automatic shutdown. A shutdown or paused feature is a safety response, not evidence that the phone is permanently damaged. If the same workload repeatedly reaches that state, reduce the heat source and seek support if it happens during light use.

Other Android models

Android does not expose one identical temperature screen on every manufacturer model. The platform’s Thermal HAL reports temperature sensors and throttling status, and anything that throttles device performance, including battery power constraints, must be reported through that interface. The Android HardwarePropertiesManager API defines sources such as current temperature, throttling temperature and shutdown temperature.

Whether an owner or an installed app can read those values, and how they are labeled, depends on the manufacturer, model, firmware and app privileges. A number shown by one Android phone may represent a different sensor or threshold from a number shown by another. Use the phone’s own warning, diagnostic page and before-and-after performance rather than comparing raw values across brands. If no consumer diagnostic exists, the controlled workload test remains valid evidence.

iPhone and Android: what can actually be compared

Check iPhone Pixel 6 and later Other Android phones
Consumer temperature screen No single universal CPU-temperature reading; warnings and behavior are the practical indicators. Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm, with current state and history. Availability and labels depend on manufacturer, model and firmware.
Visible mitigation Charging may slow or stop; display may dim or go black; cellular service may enter low-power mode; camera functions may be disabled; apps may run at lower frame rates or take longer to process. CPU performance may be reduced; low-power mode, temporary limits, paused features or automatic shutdown can occur at higher thermal states. Thermal behavior is device-specific and is reported through the platform’s thermal interfaces.
System interface Apple documents thermal states for apps, including serious and critical states. Pixel diagnostics expose a consumer-facing status and history. Android Thermal HAL and HardwarePropertiesManager define sensor and throttling information, subject to access and implementation.
Best owner test Repeat the same task after cooling and watch for warning, charging, display, camera and frame-rate changes. Repeat the task and compare the “Phone is very warm” state with performance. Use any model-specific warning or diagnostic, then rely on the controlled cool-and-repeat comparison.

The useful comparison is how each phone responds under the same type of workload, not which brand reports the higher number. A raw reading lacks context unless you know the sensor location, severity definitions and shutdown threshold for that exact model.

What warmth is normal?

Temporary warmth is expected during first-time setup, a backup restore, a major software update, wireless charging, graphics-intensive games, camera use, high-quality streaming, hotspot tethering, large uploads or downloads and high-definition video recording. These activities combine processor, graphics, radio, camera or charging work and can make the enclosure noticeably warm.

For iPhone and iPad, Apple specifies an ambient operating range of 0 to 35 °C (32 to 95 °F). This is the surrounding environment, not a universal internal throttling point. A phone in direct sun can exceed its safe internal range even when the air temperature seems moderate, while a warm enclosure during a short workload may still be operating normally.

Warmth alone does not establish a fault. Concern rises when the same workload repeatedly causes measurable slowdown, a warning, charging interruption, feature shutdown or recovery after cooling. A phone that becomes warm during setup and then returns to normal is behaving differently from one that overheats during light use.

Rule out causes that look like thermal throttling

Battery condition

A battery with reduced capacity or higher impedance can trigger performance management independently of a hot enclosure. On iPhone, review Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On any phone, compare a cool run at a similar charge level with the hot run. If both runs are slow, heat is not the only explanation.

Background work

Backups, indexing, updates, photo processing and synchronization can consume resources briefly. Restarting immediately before one test but not the other makes the comparison unreliable. Let setup or update activity finish, then repeat the workload under matching conditions. Also avoid judging a first launch against a later launch when the first run is doing one-time processing.

Network and radio conditions

Navigation, streaming, hotspot use and transfers depend on signal strength and server conditions. A weak cellular signal can increase radio work and heat while also making the app appear slow. Repeat a network test in the same location and, where practical, compare a local task such as opening an installed app or rendering an offline clip. If the local task recovers after cooling but the transfer does not, investigate the network path separately.

Software or app faults

If one app remains slow after cooling while the rest of the phone behaves normally, check that app’s workload, settings and updates. A software bug can mimic throttling. A system-wide slowdown that persists at normal temperature deserves operating-system, storage and battery troubleshooting rather than repeated cooling tests.

What to do when a thermal warning appears

  1. Stop gaming, recording, navigation, tethering or other demanding work.
  2. Move the phone out of direct sunlight and away from a hot car or other heat source.
  3. Disconnect charging if the device is warm and charging is not required for an emergency.
  4. Let the device cool naturally until the warning clears and normal behavior returns.
  5. Follow any shutdown or charging instruction shown by the operating system.

Do not continue gaming or charging through a temperature warning. A phone cooler or external thermometer can be an optional accessory, but neither is required for the primary diagnosis. External surface readings do not necessarily represent the internal sensor or the threshold controlling performance. There is no single universally compatible product or accessory needed to determine whether throttling is occurring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to seek service

Arrange professional support if the phone repeatedly overheats during light use, shows warnings in a normal environment, shuts down unexpectedly, refuses to charge after cooling, or remains substantially slow when cool with no obvious battery, network or software explanation. Keep a note of the workload, warning text, battery level and whether performance recovered; those details help distinguish a repeatable thermal event from an unrelated fault.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my phone is thermal throttling?

Run a repeatable demanding task, document the slowdown and any warning, cool the phone, and repeat the same task under similar conditions. Recovery after cooling is strong practical evidence that heat contributed. It does not prove heat was the only cause.

Why does my phone get slow when it gets hot?

The operating system reduces processor or graphics work and may limit charging, radios, the camera or display to protect the device. The exact response depends on the model and its thermal state.

How can I check my phone temperature?

Pixel 6 and later provide Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm, including current state and history. iPhones rely on warnings and behavior rather than one universal consumer CPU-temperature value. Other Android phones may expose model-specific diagnostics or no owner-facing reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is my phone slow because of heat or because it is old?

Compare a hot run with a cool run at a similar battery level. If performance returns after cooling, heat is a strong contributor. If it remains slow when cool, check battery condition, background activity, network conditions, software and app-specific problems.

Can an external thermometer prove throttling?

No. A surface or room reading may not match the internal sensor or the threshold controlling performance. Use the built-in warning or diagnostic, plus the controlled performance comparison, as the primary check.

Should I keep charging while the phone is hot?

If the phone is warm and charging slows, pauses or shows a warning, disconnect charging when it is not required for an emergency and let the device cool. Follow any instructions displayed by the operating system.

Do I need a phone cooler or a special app?

No purchase is required to diagnose the problem. A cooler may be optional mitigation after you confirm a sustained heat-related slowdown, but accessories and app readings are not universal and should not replace the built-in indicators and repeatable test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my phone shuts down?

Automatic shutdown at a high thermal state is a protective response described for Pixel devices. Move the phone away from heat, let it cool naturally and follow its charging or restart instructions. Repeated shutdown during light use merits professional support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my phone is thermal throttling?

Repeat the same demanding task while warm and after cooling. If measurable performance returns after cooling, heat is a strong contributor, although other causes can coexist.

Why does my phone get slow when it gets hot?

The system can reduce CPU/GPU work and limit charging, radios, camera functions or display behavior to protect the device.

How can I check my phone temperature?

Pixel 6 and later have Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm. iPhones use warnings and behavior rather than one universal consumer temperature number; other Android models vary.

Is my phone slow because of heat or because it is old?

Compare identical workloads at similar battery levels when hot and cool. Persistent slowness when cool points to battery, software, network or app causes as well as age.

Do I need a phone cooler or special app?

No. Built-in indicators and a cool-and-repeat test are sufficient for diagnosis. Cooling accessories are optional mitigation after a confirmed heat-related slowdown.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: reproduce the slowdown, record visible changes and warnings, cool the phone safely, then repeat the same workload. Recovery after cooling is the clearest practical sign that heat is slowing the phone. Use Pixel diagnostics or iPhone thermal and battery indicators as supporting evidence, but do not compare raw temperature numbers across brands.
