For a pre-packaged commodity covered by India’s Legal Metrology rules, the package’s retail sale price (RSP), commonly called MRP, includes all taxes; GST should not be charged on top of that declared package price. But a screenshot alone cannot establish that every displayed price is the package MRP, identify the correct GST rate, or prove the final amount payable. Check the label and context of the price, then compare it with the invoice when available.
First identify what the screenshot’s price represents
A product page may show several amounts that mean different things. The packaged-commodity rule concerns the retail sale price declared on a covered package; it does not automatically make every offer price, subtotal, delivery fee, or checkout total an MRP.

- Package MRP/RSP: the declared maximum retail sale price for a package within the rules’ scope. The Department of Consumer Affairs’ FAQ says GST is included in MRP and is not to be charged over it (FAQ). The applicable consolidated rules and exceptions matter for a particular product or dispute.
- Offer or sale price: a listing price may be discounted from the MRP. Record both amounts if shown; do not treat the crossed-out MRP and current offer price as interchangeable.
- Order or checkout total: this can include or omit delivery, handling, discounts, or other adjustments. A screenshot of a product page does not establish the final checkout amount.
- Selected variant: size, model, quantity, or other selection can affect the listed amount. Note exactly what is selected.
CBIC’s footwear FAQ states that the package RSP is inclusive of GST, while explaining a category-specific rate threshold using footwear RSP and transaction value. That footwear example is not a general rule for rates on other goods; classification and current rate entries must be checked separately (CBIC GST Rates FAQs).
Capture the context needed to interpret the evidence
Before drawing a conclusion, preserve or note the details visible around the price. If a detail is missing, say so rather than filling it in by inference.

- Page URL and capture date and time
- Seller and item title
- Selected size, model, and quantity
- Currency and displayed amount
- Any package MRP, crossed-out price, discount, or offer-price label
- Any wording about tax, GST, or inclusive pricing
- Delivery or handling charges, if displayed
- Whether the view is a product page, cart, or checkout
A static image may show a price before login, location selection, variant selection, coupon application, delivery calculation, or checkout. It does not independently establish the exact listing time, seller-side tax calculation, delivery location, applicable product classification, or final payable amount. Treat those as evidence limits, not as proof of a particular seller’s pricing practice.
Check for GST over a covered package MRP
- Determine whether the item appears to be a pre-packaged commodity covered by Legal Metrology rules. Do not assume every product or every online amount is legally an MRP; scope and exceptions can matter.
- Read the exact label beside the amount. If it is the package’s declared MRP/RSP, do not assume GST may be added above that amount. CBIC’s GST Rates FAQs say, in a footwear example, “retail sale price declared on the package is inclusive of GST”; the Department of Consumer Affairs FAQ likewise says GST is included in MRP and is not to be charged over it. The consumer FAQ is GST-era guidance, so consult current consolidated rules for a product-specific legal issue.
- Keep the package MRP distinct from an offer price, order subtotal, delivery fee, or checkout total. Do not apply the package-MRP rule to another line without establishing what that line represents.
- If the screenshot appears to show GST added above a declared package MRP, preserve the image and seek corroboration from the package, order details, seller, and invoice. The screenshot can show what appeared on the page; by itself it does not determine the legal treatment of the transaction.
Calculate embedded GST only when the rate is known
CGST Rule 35 provides the calculation for extracting tax from a value that is inclusive of tax: tax amount = inclusive value × tax rate ÷ (100 + tax rate) (CGST Rules, Part A, Rule 35). Use it only when the amount is known to be tax-inclusive and the applicable rate has been independently established.

For illustration only, at a known 18% rate, an inclusive amount of ₹1,180 contains ₹180 tax: ₹1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180. The corresponding pre-tax value is ₹1,000. This arithmetic example does not establish that an unspecified product is taxed at 18%.

Those are category-specific FAQ example values, not a universal GST rate or a market statistic. A screenshot of a price alone does not identify the correct classification or rate.

Use the invoice to corroborate the screenshot
A tax invoice is stronger evidence for the transaction’s tax breakdown than a product-page screenshot. Compare the goods description, quantity, supplier, invoice date, taxable value, tax rate, tax amount, and total with the listing and order. CBIC’s invoice guidance lists invoice particulars, including supplier details and tax information (CBIC tax invoice guidance).
Depending on the supply and supplier, the document may instead be a bill of supply, including for exempt supplies or composition taxpayers, with different tax details. Do not expect every such document to show GST charged as a separate tax amount. For a specific product or dispute, establish the seller identity, relevant date and location, product classification, applicable rate entry, and the appropriate transaction document before concluding whether the amount was correctly treated as tax-inclusive.

Make a defensible conclusion
State only what the evidence supports. A useful note distinguishes the displayed amount from the package MRP and checkout total, records the selected product and capture context, and says whether an invoice was available. If the screenshot omits the seller, timestamp, location, shipping, discount, tax wording, or selected variant, identify those omissions. Do not infer the applicable tax rate or seller’s tax calculation from the picture alone.
