Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore buying, verify gold through the hallmark system used in that country, and verify a diamond through clear written disclosure and, when available, a report checked with its issuing laboratory. A stamp or a stone’s appearance is not enough on its own: each check confirms only certain facts, and the evidence should cover the exact piece or stone you are buying.
Start by identifying what you need to verify
“Genuine” can mean different things: the metal meets a stated fineness, a diamond is natural rather than laboratory-created or imitation, treatments have been disclosed, or a grading report is authentic. Decide which claims matter to you and ask the seller to state them precisely in writing.

- Gold: confirm the stated purity and whether the item carries a valid mark under the local system.
- Diamond: establish whether the stone is natural, laboratory-created, or an imitation, and ask about treatments or enhancements.
- Documentation: check that an available report belongs to the stone being sold, and keep an invoice describing the item.
Hallmark systems are jurisdiction-specific. A stamp that looks familiar is not universal proof. The World Gold Council outlines differences between UK and U.S. practices in its guide to gold hallmarks; confirm local rules with the relevant authority.

How to check gold jewellery
Read the mark, but do not treat appearance as an assay
Ask the seller what the stated purity means in the market where you are buying. Gold may be marked by caratage or by fineness in parts per thousand, and the applicable marking scheme varies by country. Use a magnifier to read a small mark if needed, but magnification cannot establish the metal’s composition.

For India, verify the HUID through BIS
India’s current HUID-based hallmark comprises the BIS logo, a purity or fineness mark, and a unique six-character alphanumeric HUID. Inspect the details and use the official BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” function before purchase; compare the lookup information with the item in front of you. The Bureau of Indian Standards explains the system in its General Hallmarking FAQ.
Indian registered jewellers should have a 10X magnifying glass available to show customers hallmark details. That helps you read the mark; it does not test purity.
Check every component and keep an itemized invoice
For a pair of earrings, inspect both earrings. For a chain with a detachable pendant or any multi-part piece, check the separate components rather than assuming one mark covers all of them. BIS guidance says each item and detachable part should carry hallmarking and fineness details, with distinct HUIDs.

Ask for an invoice that identifies the article and retain it. BIS says an authentic bill is necessary for dispute or complaint handling and that article details should appear on it.
When a mark or lookup does not settle the question
If the claimed purity remains important and uncertain, ask about testing by a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. In India, consumers can take jewellery or a sample for chargeable testing. BIS describes this route in its consumer protection guidance. In other countries, use the relevant local authority or an appropriately qualified independent service.
How to check diamond jewellery
Ask exactly what the stone is
Ask whether the stone is natural diamond, laboratory-created diamond, or an imitation such as moissanite, and whether it has been treated or enhanced. “Real” is too vague to answer those questions. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says natural and lab-created gems can be hard to distinguish and that lab-created and imitation gems should be clearly labeled; see its November 2024 consumer guide to buying gemstones, diamonds, and pearls.

Get the claims in writing
Ask whether a grading report is available, and have the sales paperwork state the material claims relevant to the purchase, including origin category and disclosed treatments. The FTC advises buyers to consider working with someone else if a seller will not put these details in writing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare the disclosed attributes that matter to you: identity and origin, treatments, carat weight, dimensions, color, cut, and clarity. Treatments may affect value or care. A grading report is not the same as an appraisal, and its existence does not by itself prove every seller claim.
Check a GIA report with GIA
If the report is from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), use GIA Report Check to see whether the report details match GIA’s database. GIA also describes report security features including a hologram, security screen, and microprint. Matching a report record confirms the record, not the metal in the setting or every representation made by the seller.

Do not rely on visual tricks
A diamond’s appearance alone cannot reliably establish whether it is natural, laboratory-created, or an imitation. If a mounted stone’s identity is uncertain, ask what testing equipment and expertise the seller uses, or seek an appropriately qualified independent gem-identification service. A jeweller’s loupe can help with close inspection but is not a substitute for proper identification.

| Evidence or check | Can help establish | Does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Visible hallmark | The mark’s stated purity or fineness, if it is valid under the local system | That the mark is genuine, that every component is covered, or that the metal has been independently tested |
| India BIS Care “Verify HUID” lookup | Information associated with the HUID in the BIS system | That unmarked or separate components are covered, or that a diamond’s identity is verified |
| Diamond report checked with its issuer | Whether the report details match the issuing laboratory’s record | Every seller claim, the setting’s metal composition, or a current appraisal value |
| Written invoice and disclosure | What the seller represented about the item at sale | Independent confirmation that the representation is technically correct |
| Independent assay or gem identification | The specific metal or stone identity tested, depending on the method and scope | Attributes not covered by that test or parts of the jewellery not examined |
Use a pre-purchase checklist
- Ask for precise descriptions. For gold, ask for the stated purity and applicable hallmark system. For a diamond, ask whether it is natural, laboratory-created, or imitation, and whether it has treatments.
- Inspect the exact item. Read the mark with the seller’s magnifier; check separate components and every stone covered by the claims.
- Verify official identifiers and reports. In India, look up the HUID using BIS Care. For a GIA report, compare it through GIA Report Check.
- Get documentation. Ensure the invoice identifies the article and that material and treatment claims are in writing. Keep the paperwork.
- Escalate unresolved, consequential doubts. Ask about recognized testing appropriate to the question—metal fineness or stone identity—and clarify exactly what will be examined.
