How to Check Whether Fibre Internet Is Available at Your Address

Enter your exact property address into an official broadband checker, then verify the result with the provider before ordering. In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map shows the location point, providers, access technology and maximum advertised speeds. In the United Kingdom, an Openreach address check shows the broadband option reported for an address in its network. Treat either result as a screening step: it reports availability, not a guaranteed order, price, speed in use or installation outcome.

Start with the exact address, not a neighbourhood coverage map

Fibre service is checked at an individual premises. A street, postcode, building name or nearby address can produce a different result from your home, so enter the complete address exactly as it appears on an official checker. For apartments, select the location point for the correct building or unit where the tool offers separate points.

Use an address-level checker operated by a regulator, network operator or internet provider. A general coverage impression can show that fibre exists nearby without proving that a line can be ordered at your property.

  • Have the official postal address ready, including the house or flat number.
  • Use the checker for the country and network serving the property.
  • When a map displays several points, select the point that matches the building you occupy.
  • Save the result or note the date, because network information can change.

Checking a US address with the FCC National Broadband Map

The FCC National Broadband Map is the primary address-level starting point for a US fixed-broadband check. Its fixed-broadband view includes fibre, cable, DSL, satellite and fixed wireless, so seeing a broadband provider in the result does not by itself mean the connection is fibre.

Step 1: Search the property

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map and choose the address-search function.
  2. Type the full street address, including the city, state and ZIP code when requested.
  3. Review the suggested matches and select the exact property.
  4. If the map shows a marker or location point, click the point that corresponds to the building. Do not rely on a nearby point merely because it is on the same street.

Step 2: Read the provider and technology listing

The selected location opens a list of providers reporting service at that point. For each entry, inspect the access-technology label. Choose entries identified as fibre rather than cable, DSL, satellite or fixed wireless. The map can show more than one technology at the same address, so read the label for each provider instead of assuming that the fastest-looking result is fibre.

Step 3: Record the advertised speeds

The FCC map reports maximum advertised download and upload speeds for the listed service. Write down both figures and the technology beside them. These are provider-reported maximums for the offer shown on the map; they are not a measurement of the speed your devices will receive.

Step 4: Confirm that an order can actually be placed

Use the provider’s own address checker or contact its sales or support team with the exact address. Ask whether the fibre plan shown can be ordered at that premises, what installation is required and which plans and speeds are currently offered. A map entry is evidence that the provider reports service availability, not a substitute for an order-acceptance check.

What “available” means on the FCC map

The FCC’s definition is broader than “a fibre connection is already working.” Service is considered available when the provider has, or previously had, a connection in service at the location, or when it could initiate service through a routine installation within 10 business days of a request.

That 10-business-day condition is an availability rule, not a promise that your installation will be completed in that time. A routine installation may differ from work needed at a particular property, and the map does not decide the retail plan, final price or appointment date.

Fixed-location providers submit location-level availability information to the FCC Broadband Data Collection twice a year. The FCC also says the map is updated continuously through verification work, new provider data, location updates and public information. Consequently, a result is a dated view of reported availability rather than a permanent guarantee.

What the FCC map cannot establish

  • Actual performance: advertised maximum download and upload speeds are not a test of throughput, latency, Wi-Fi performance or reliability at your home.
  • Affordability: the map does not establish the monthly price, introductory period, equipment charges, installation fees or contract terms.
  • Adoption: a listing does not show how many residents use the service.
  • Guaranteed orderability: the provider still has to confirm that it can accept an order for the exact property and offer a suitable installation path.
  • Fibre by implication: a broadband result may be cable, DSL, satellite or fixed wireless, so the technology field must be checked.

Checking a UK address on the Openreach fibre checker

For an address within the Openreach network footprint, use the Openreach fibre checker and enter the full property address. The checker reports the broadband option currently associated with that address. Read the result for the specific premises rather than inferring availability from a nearby property.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a provider will not let you order

Openreach specifically advises people who could not place an order with a broadband provider to run the fibre check before raising an issue. First repeat the check with the exact address, then use its result when discussing the failed order with the provider or when reporting the problem through the appropriate support route.

Why a network result still needs provider confirmation

Openreach reports the network option; a retail broadband provider must still confirm the plan, price, installation process and order status. If the checker says fibre is present but the provider’s order system rejects the address, ask the provider to investigate the address record rather than ordering a different technology by assumption.

If you are outside the United States or the Openreach footprint

The FCC map is a US resource, and the Openreach checker applies to addresses served by that UK network. Elsewhere, look first for an address-level broadband map from the national communications regulator. Then check the local network operator or internet service provider directly.

The sequence remains the same:

  1. Search the complete address in an official map or operator checker.
  2. Identify the access technology and make sure the label says fibre, not merely broadband.
  3. Note the advertised download and upload speeds if the tool provides them.
  4. Ask the provider to confirm that the exact property is orderable and what installation involves.

Do not treat a country-level or city-level coverage statement as proof for one address. Address-level confirmation is the meaningful test.

How to compare multiple fibre results

Several providers may appear for one location. Compare the fields that determine whether the service is genuinely usable at your property, not just the headline download number.

Check What to record Why it matters
Exact premises Address and selected map location point A result for a neighbouring building does not establish service at yours.
Access technology Fibre, cable, DSL, satellite or fixed wireless Only the technology labelled fibre answers the fibre-availability question.
Provider Name shown for the selected location You need the correct company to verify the order and installation.
Advertised download Maximum figure shown by the checker Useful for comparing offers, but not a performance measurement.
Advertised upload Maximum figure shown by the checker Important for backups, publishing and video calls; verify the retail plan.
Order status Provider confirms order accepted or rejected This is the practical test after the map lookup.
Commercial terms Price, fees, equipment and contract details supplied by the provider The FCC map does not provide affordability or complete plan terms.

If two entries use fibre, ask each provider to confirm the exact plan behind the advertised speed. A map’s maximum figure may not correspond to every retail tier that the provider sells.

When the address is missing or the result looks wrong

The location point is missing or misplaced

Check the address spelling and unit number first. If the FCC map does not show the property or places the point incorrectly, use its Location Challenge process to request a correction. A location-point error can prevent a valid service record from appearing at the right premises.

A provider or technology appears incorrectly

If the FCC listing does not match what is actually available, use the map’s Availability Challenge process. Public input and challenges are part of the FCC’s methods for improving the map. Keep the exact address, the provider name, the technology shown and the date of the lookup so the issue can be described precisely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map says available but the provider rejects the order

Ask the provider to check the address record and explain whether the rejection is caused by an address-format problem, a non-routine installation requirement or a plan that is not currently orderable. The FCC definition permits a routine installation within 10 business days; it does not require every possible property build-out or guarantee that every retail channel will accept the order immediately.

The provider says fibre is available but the checker says otherwise

Repeat the address search, select the correct location point and check whether the provider is referring to a different building or technology. If the discrepancy remains, ask the provider which network record supports its statement and report an inaccurate map entry through the relevant challenge process where available.

A practical verification checklist before you sign up

  • Use the complete address, including the unit or flat identifier.
  • Select the correct building location point on a map.
  • Confirm that the technology field explicitly says fibre.
  • Record the listed provider and maximum advertised download and upload speeds.
  • Check the date of the lookup and remember that provider data can be updated.
  • Run the provider’s own address checker or contact the provider directly.
  • Ask whether the exact premises can accept an order now.
  • Request the installation method, expected appointment process and any property work that may be needed.
  • Confirm the actual plan’s price and terms separately from the map result.
  • If the location or availability data is wrong, submit the appropriate FCC challenge or use the network operator’s support process.

The reliable answer to the address question

An official address-level result is the right first answer, but the provider’s confirmation is the answer that matters for ordering. In the US, use the FCC map to identify fibre providers and their advertised speeds, then verify the exact property with the provider. In the Openreach UK footprint, run the Openreach fibre check and use the result when resolving an order problem. Everywhere else, follow the same regulator-map, technology-label and provider-confirmation sequence.
