How to Check Whether Copilot in Excel Is Available on Your Plan

The quickest way to check Copilot in Excel is to identify the account currently signed in, then inspect the license or subscription attached to that account. With a work or school account, open Microsoft 365 and look for the Copilot label beneath your name on the home page. With a personal Microsoft account, open the Microsoft account dashboard and review Services & subscriptions. A missing Copilot button alone does not prove that your plan is ineligible: app version, license assignment, network access, privacy settings and, for organizations, tenant policies can all affect what you see.

Start with the account that is actually signed in

Microsoft uses different checks for personal accounts and work or school accounts. Before changing a plan or reinstalling Excel, confirm which identity Office is using. In Excel, open File and select Account (or Office Account in some versions), then compare the displayed email address with the account you intended to use. A computer can have a personal Microsoft account and a company or university account signed in at the same time, and the entitlement may belong to only one of them.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Personal Microsoft account: the subscription owner’s Microsoft 365 plan determines Copilot access in desktop apps.
  • Work or school account: your organization must assign the appropriate license, and its Microsoft 365 tenant policies can permit or restrict the feature.

Do not infer eligibility from the name of a plan alone. Microsoft’s current plan names, add-ons and rollout rules can change, and a public plan description cannot show whether a particular business user has been assigned a license or whether an administrator has disabled a feature.

Check a work or school account

1. Open Microsoft 365 home

  1. Sign in to Microsoft 365 with the same work or school account you use in Excel.
  2. On the Microsoft 365 home page, scroll to the bottom of the page to view your account information.
  3. Look beneath your name for the Copilot label. Microsoft’s license guide, updated in April 2026, describes three labels: Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic) and M365 Copilot (Premium).

2. Read the label precisely

Label shown under your name What Microsoft says it means What it tells you about Excel
Copilot Chat (Basic) No Microsoft Copilot add-on. No Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote through that entitlement.
M365 Copilot (Basic) Standard Microsoft 365 app access without the Copilot add-on. Standard access to Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
M365 Copilot (Premium) A Copilot add-on license with priority access. Access to the supported apps plus the priority access associated with the add-on.

The label is an account-level licensing signal, not a guarantee that every device will display a button immediately. Excel still has to meet Microsoft’s app, network and privacy requirements, and an administrator can apply tenant settings that affect availability.

3. Ask an administrator to verify assignment

If the label is absent, unexpected or different from what your organization purchased, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator or help desk. Ask the administrator to confirm three separate facts:

  • Which Microsoft 365 or Office 365 license is assigned to your user account.
  • Whether any Copilot add-on required by your organization’s plan is assigned to you rather than merely purchased for the tenant.
  • Whether tenant policy, connected-experiences settings or another organizational control allows Copilot in Excel.

Only an administrator with access to your organization’s tenant can establish those facts. A coworker’s access, a product page or the name of your department’s plan cannot prove that your account has the same assignment.

Check a personal Microsoft account

1. Open Services & subscriptions

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard with the account that owns your Microsoft 365 subscription.
  2. Open Services & subscriptions.
  3. Find the active Microsoft 365 subscription and read its exact plan name and status.

Microsoft’s individual-plan guidance says that Copilot benefits in Microsoft 365 are available to the subscription owner. A person invited to a Family plan should not assume that the owner’s AI benefits automatically transfer to every family member. If you are not the owner, ask the owner to check the account that purchased the subscription or use a subscription that provides the benefit to your own account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Compare the subscription with Microsoft’s current eligible categories

Microsoft’s Copilot in Excel FAQ lists these categories as potentially eligible:

  • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with an AI credits plan.
  • Microsoft 365 Premium.
  • A commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription.
  • An eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 business or enterprise subscription for Copilot Chat.

“Potentially” matters. Availability can vary by the exact license, account type and rollout status. Microsoft’s support pages are the authority for the current rule, so compare your exact subscription name and account context with the latest wording rather than relying on an older screenshot or a plan name remembered from a previous year.

3. Distinguish AI credits from license access

Microsoft’s individual-plan guidance, marked as updated in October 2026, treats AI credits and usage limits as plan-dependent benefits. Credits can limit how much you use an AI feature, but checking credits is not the same as proving that the Excel license is present. First verify that the account owns an eligible subscription; then review any displayed credits or limits for the amount of use available.

Personal and work accounts use different evidence

Question Personal Microsoft account Work or school account
Where to check first Microsoft account dashboard, Services & subscriptions. Microsoft 365 home page, at the bottom under your name.
What identifies access The exact active subscription and whether you are its owner. The Copilot label and the license assigned to your user.
Who controls assignment The subscription owner controls the account’s plan. An organization administrator assigns licenses and controls tenant settings.
What can still hide the button Unsupported or outdated app, network or privacy configuration, or the wrong signed-in account. All of those factors, plus license assignment and organization policy.
What “Premium” or an add-on indicates Use the exact benefit description for your personal plan; do not assume another account receives it. M365 Copilot (Premium) indicates an add-on license and priority access.

Why the Copilot button may be missing

Microsoft’s Excel FAQ and getting-started guidance identify several independent requirements. A missing control is therefore a symptom to investigate, not a conclusive license test.

The wrong account is active

Excel may be signed in with a personal account while the eligible entitlement belongs to your employer, or vice versa. Check the email shown in File > Account, sign out of the unwanted identity if necessary, and sign back in with the account whose subscription or assignment you verified.

The license is not assigned to you

A business or enterprise organization can own a qualifying subscription without assigning it to every employee. Ask the administrator to check your individual assignment. If the administrator confirms that no eligible license is assigned, the missing button is consistent with the account’s current entitlement; purchasing or changing a plan is an organizational decision, not an Excel setting.

Tenant settings restrict Copilot

For work and school accounts, administrators can control access through tenant configuration. A correct label does not override a policy that blocks connected experiences or Copilot. Ask the administrator whether the feature is allowed for your account and security group.

The Excel build or platform does not meet requirements

Microsoft says Copilot has app-version requirements. Install pending Microsoft 365 updates, restart Excel and check the build shown under File > Account. Do not assume that an older perpetual Office installation has the same feature set as a current Microsoft 365 build. If your organization manages updates, the administrator may need to approve or deploy the required build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network or privacy settings interfere

Copilot also depends on network connectivity and privacy or connected-experiences settings. A corporate firewall, offline state or a privacy setting that disables required connected experiences can prevent the control from appearing or functioning. Test while connected to the organization’s approved network, then review Excel’s privacy settings. Do not weaken security controls on your own; ask IT which setting is permitted by policy.

The feature is still rolling out

Microsoft’s documentation describes eligibility and requirements, but a rollout can be staged by account, tenant or platform. If the account, label, app build and policy all check out, ask the administrator or Microsoft support whether your tenant is included in the current rollout.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Use this order so that each check eliminates a different cause instead of repeating the same plan lookup.

  1. Record the active identity. In Excel, open File > Account and copy the signed-in email address for your own reference.
  2. Follow the matching account path. For a personal account, inspect Services & subscriptions. For a work or school account, inspect the Copilot label at the bottom of Microsoft 365 home.
  3. Interpret the result. Treat Copilot Chat (Basic) as no Copilot add-on and no Copilot in the core Office apps; treat M365 Copilot (Basic) as standard app access; treat M365 Copilot (Premium) as add-on licensing with priority access.
  4. Verify ownership or assignment. Personal users must be the subscription owner. Business users must have the qualifying license assigned to their own account.
  5. Update Excel. Use File > Account > Update Options > Update Now when that control is available, then restart the app.
  6. Check connectivity and privacy. Confirm that the device is online and that required connected experiences are not disabled by Excel settings or organizational policy.
  7. Recheck the workbook. Open a supported workbook after restarting Excel and look for Copilot in the ribbon or task pane. The exact placement can vary by platform and build.
  8. Escalate with evidence. Give your administrator the signed-in email, the label you saw, your Excel version and the time of the test. Ask for confirmation of license assignment and tenant policy rather than simply asking whether the company “has Copilot.”

How to handle borderline results

Some results answer only part of the eligibility question. For example, seeing a Copilot label confirms that Microsoft recognizes an entitlement for the signed-in work account, but it does not tell you whether the current Excel build, privacy configuration or tenant policy will expose the control. Likewise, finding a Microsoft 365 subscription in Services & subscriptions confirms ownership of a subscription, but you still need to compare its exact name with Microsoft’s current eligible categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a personal account shows several subscriptions, use the one marked active and check which account purchased it. Do not switch between accounts merely because one displays a Copilot icon. The account used in Excel must match the account that owns the qualifying benefit. On a shared computer, sign-in state can change after another person uses Office, so repeat the account check whenever the button disappears unexpectedly.

For an organization, distinguish a tenant-wide purchase from an individual assignment. An administrator may have bought licenses but allocated them to a limited group. Ask for confirmation of the user assignment and any policy that controls connected experiences. This is more precise than asking whether the company has Copilot, because a “yes” at the tenant level does not establish access for every employee.

Finally, separate entitlement from usage. A plan can provide the Copilot capability while an AI-credit or usage limit affects how much you can use it. Check credits only after confirming the underlying subscription or license. A depleted allowance does not necessarily mean the license vanished, and an available credit balance does not create a license that the account does not own.

What to tell an administrator or support representative

A precise support request prevents a generic plan-name answer. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your account type: personal, work or school.
  • The exact account used in File > Account.
  • The subscription name shown in Services & subscriptions, or the Copilot label shown on Microsoft 365 home.
  • Your Excel platform and build number.
  • Whether Excel is online and whether privacy or connected-experiences settings are controlled by your organization.
  • What you expected to see and whether the control is absent in every workbook or only one.

For licensing or access questions, Microsoft directs users to an IT administrator or a Microsoft account representative. Support can distinguish an entitlement problem from an app, network, privacy or tenant-configuration problem when given those details.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming a Family invitation includes the owner’s AI benefit

Microsoft’s guidance limits the relevant AI benefits to the subscription owner. A family member’s access to Office apps does not by itself establish Copilot access in desktop Excel.

Using the Copilot button as the only test

The button can be absent because of version, license, network, privacy or organization settings. Use the account dashboard or Microsoft 365 label first, then troubleshoot the app.

Confusing Copilot Chat with Copilot in Excel

Copilot Chat (Basic) is specifically described as lacking Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Seeing a Copilot chat experience elsewhere does not prove that the in-app Excel experience is licensed.

Assuming a tenant purchase equals personal access

An organization can buy a qualifying subscription while assigning it only to selected users. The administrator must verify your account-level assignment.

Relying on an old plan comparison

Microsoft’s plan names, AI-credit rules, labels and rollout details are volatile. Recheck the current Microsoft support guidance when you make a licensing decision, especially after a renewal, tenant change or major Office update.

When you can conclude that Copilot is available

You have strong evidence of eligibility when the account path, ownership or assignment and app requirements all agree: a personal account owns a currently qualifying subscription, or a work/school account shows the appropriate Copilot label and the administrator confirms assignment and policy; Excel is on a supported, updated build; and network and privacy settings allow the required connected experiences. If one of those checks fails, resolve that specific issue before changing plans.

For a work or school account, the administrator’s confirmation is the decisive check because public documentation cannot reveal your tenant’s assignments or policies. For a personal account, the decisive checks are the account owner and the exact subscription shown in the Microsoft account dashboard. The visible button is the final in-app confirmation, not the starting proof of entitlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have an eligible Copilot in Excel license?

First identify the signed-in account. For a work or school account, open Microsoft 365 home, scroll to the account area and read the Copilot label beneath your name. For a personal account, open the Microsoft account dashboard and inspect Services & subscriptions. Compare the exact subscription or label with Microsoft’s current eligibility wording, then verify that the personal account is the subscription owner or that the work account has a license assigned by an administrator.

Why don’t I have the Copilot button in Excel?

A missing button is not conclusive evidence that the plan is ineligible. Microsoft identifies app version, license, network and privacy requirements, and an organization can also restrict Copilot through tenant settings. Check the active email address in File > Account, verify the subscription or Copilot label, update Excel, confirm connectivity and connected-experiences settings, and ask an administrator to check assignment and policy if the account is managed.

Does every Microsoft 365 Family member get the owner’s Copilot benefit?

Do not assume that. Microsoft’s individual-plan guidance says the relevant AI benefits are available to the subscription owner. A family member may be able to use shared Office apps without receiving the owner’s Copilot benefit in desktop Excel. The owner should check the purchasing account, or the family member should use a subscription that provides the benefit to that person’s own account.

What does Copilot Chat (Basic) mean for Excel?

Microsoft’s label guide describes Copilot Chat (Basic) as having no Microsoft Copilot add-on and no Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote through that entitlement. It is therefore not the same as in-app Copilot access in Excel. M365 Copilot (Basic) indicates standard access in those apps without the add-on, while M365 Copilot (Premium) indicates an add-on license with priority access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a company have Copilot but leave me without it?

Yes. A business or enterprise tenant can purchase qualifying licenses without assigning one to every employee. An administrator must check the license assigned to your individual account and any tenant or connected-experiences policy affecting your security group. A coworker’s access or the company’s plan name cannot establish that your account has the same entitlement.

Do AI credits prove that Copilot in Excel is licensed?

No. AI credits and usage limits are plan-dependent benefits that govern available use; they are separate from confirming the underlying license. First verify that the account owns an eligible subscription or that the organization assigned the qualifying license. Then review the credit balance or limits shown for that plan.

Where should a work or school user look for the Copilot label?

Sign in to Microsoft 365 with the same work or school identity used in Excel. On the Microsoft 365 home page, scroll to the bottom to view the account information. The label appears beneath your name. If it is missing or unexpected, ask the Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm your assigned license and tenant settings rather than relying on a public plan description.

What information should I give IT when Copilot is missing?

Provide the account type, the exact email shown in File > Account, the subscription name or Copilot label, your Excel platform and build, whether the app is online, and whether privacy or connected-experiences settings are controlled by the organization. Also say whether the control is missing in every workbook. These details help separate an entitlement problem from an app, network, privacy or policy issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the identity first, then the matching entitlement: personal users should verify ownership and the exact subscription in Services & subscriptions; work and school users should read the Copilot label in Microsoft 365 and have an administrator confirm assignment and policy. After that, update Excel and check network and privacy requirements. The button is useful confirmation, but its absence alone cannot determine whether your plan includes Copilot.
