To find out whether a meteor shower will be visible, check three things for your exact location and viewing hours: an hourly cloud forecast, the Moon’s altitude and brightness, and the shower’s radiant and peak timing. A clear-sky astronomy score is not a weather forecast, and Moon phase alone cannot tell you whether moonlight will interfere.
Start with the exact hours you plan to watch
Meteor-shower visibility changes during the night. Before opening a forecast, choose a date and a realistic observing window, such as 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. local time. Then identify the shower’s active dates and predicted peak using a reputable annual meteor calendar, such as the International Meteor Organization’s calendar.

The peak is a planning reference, not a promise of a particular number of meteors. Rates vary with the shower’s activity, your latitude, sky brightness, obstructions and how long you watch. The IMO’s 2026 calendar notes that moonlight matters especially to visual observers because it reduces the visibility of faint meteors. Exact circumstances change from year to year, so use the calendar for the relevant year and check for later updates.
Enter your own observing location. A shower can be well placed for one latitude and poorly placed for another because the radiant—the point from which meteors appear to spread—reaches different altitudes in different places.

Use an hourly cloud forecast, not a general weather icon
What to look for
Open a forecast that reports cloud conditions hour by hour for the place where you will actually stand. Examine the entire planned session, including the hours after midnight. A single “partly cloudy” icon for the evening can conceal a completely overcast period at 1 a.m. or a clear interval before dawn.
For North America, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s astronomy service provides hourly cloud forecasts for up to 84 hours, along with sky transparency and other meteorological fields. Its cloud display can be interpreted much like visible satellite imagery: it indicates how much cloud is expected over the area at each time. The service is geographically limited to North America. Elsewhere, use your national weather service or another local provider that supplies hourly cloud information.
Read cloud forecasts as probabilities and maps
Cloud forecasts are model outputs, not guarantees that a particular patch of sky will be clear. Cloud amount, altitude, movement, timing and the forecast model’s spatial resolution all matter. A forecast may represent conditions over a grid area rather than the exact field, beach or hill where you intend to observe.
- Thick cloud across the relevant sky: meteors behind it cannot be seen.
- Broken or moving cloud: clear gaps may create short observing windows, but the number of visible meteors will be unpredictable.
- Thin high cloud: some bright meteors may show through, while faint trails lose contrast.
- Missing coverage: do not interpret an absent forecast as clear conditions. Find a source that actually covers your location.
Recheck the forecast close to the session. Forecasts become more useful at shorter lead times, but even a same-day update can miss fast-moving or small-scale cloud. If the forecast changes, adjust your start time or location rather than relying on an earlier screenshot.
Check the Moon for those same hours
Why moonlight hides meteors
Moonlight brightens the background sky. That lowers contrast and makes faint meteors disappear, while brighter meteors can remain visible. A bright Moon does not automatically make a shower worthless; it changes which meteors your eyes can detect.
A new Moon generally produces the least lunar interference, but the phase is only one part of the calculation. A nearly full Moon might set before the shower’s best hours, leaving a dark period later. A thin crescent can rise before dawn and affect only the end of a session. Look up local moonrise and moonset for your observing coordinates and date.

Find the darkest overlap
Compare the Moon’s above-horizon interval with the shower’s useful hours. If the Moon is below the horizon during the period when the radiant is high, that overlap is usually your best chance. If the Moon is above the horizon, place it outside your direct field of view and observe toward a darker part of the sky. This reduces glare but cannot remove the general brightening caused by a high Moon.
Artificial light pollution, haze and nearby lamps can overwhelm the advantage of a favorable lunar phase. Moonlight is therefore one input to the decision, not a guarantee of dark skies.
Confirm the shower’s radiant and peak timing
Radiant altitude is location-dependent
A shower’s radiant must be above your horizon for its meteors to appear. Use a location-aware sky map or shower calendar to see when it rises and how high it climbs from your latitude. A radiant near the horizon generally produces fewer observable meteors than one high in the sky because more of the shower is blocked by your horizon and local terrain.
The American Meteor Society notes that many showers are strongest from midnight to dawn because the radiant is often higher then. That is a common pattern, not a universal rule. Some showers peak at different times, and the best window depends on the shower, date and observer’s location.
Do not stare only at the radiant
Meteors can flash anywhere across the sky. Looking some distance away from the radiant often gives trails a longer appearance because you see them at an angle. Keep the radiant in your general sky area, but choose the darkest, clearest section with the fewest obstructions rather than fixing your gaze on one point.

| Situation | What it means | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Promising | Mostly clear hourly conditions overlap a dark interval, and the radiant is above the horizon. | Plan the session and recheck the forecast shortly before leaving. |
| Mixed | Cloud is broken, or a bright Moon affects part of the best window. | Shift earlier or later if another clear, darker interval exists; consider a nearby safe site supported by the forecast. |
| Poor | Widespread cloud covers the useful hours, or darkness does not overlap the radiant’s time above the horizon. | Postpone or choose another date rather than expecting a normal view. |
This is a planning aid, not a prediction of how many meteors you will count. Local trees, buildings, hills, haze, light pollution and individual night vision can change the result even when the three headline checks look favorable.
Know what each planning tool does—and leaves out
| Tool or source | Useful information | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Environment and Climate Change Canada astronomy forecast | Hourly cloud cover and transparency fields, with forecasts extending up to 84 hours for North America. | It does not provide global coverage; observers elsewhere need a local meteorological source. |
| Timeanddate meteor-shower visibility map | Location-based astronomical timing, including peak timing, radiant position, Moon phase, moonrise and sunset. | Its visibility meter explicitly does not include local weather or cloud cover. |
| International Meteor Organization annual calendar | Active dates, predicted peaks and lunar circumstances for annual showers; the 2026 edition is edited by Jürgen Rendtel. | Predicted activity is not a guaranteed visible count and conditions depend on your location. |
| American Meteor Society guidance | Practical advice on dark skies, timing, Moon effects and unaided-eye observing. | General guidance cannot replace a live, location-specific cloud forecast. |
A sky map that rates a night as astronomically favorable may still show a zero-visibility result at your site if clouds arrive. Conversely, a night with a bright Moon can still produce a worthwhile view of the brightest meteors. Always pair astronomical timing with current local weather.
A five-step workflow you can repeat for any shower
- Choose the date and session. Record the shower’s active dates and predicted peak, then select the local hours you can safely spend outdoors.
- Check hourly clouds. Enter the exact observing location in a forecast that reports cloud conditions by hour. Inspect the complete session and note any clear gaps or periods of widespread cloud.
- Check Moonrise and moonset. For the same date and location, identify when the Moon is above the horizon and how bright its phase is. Mark the darkest overlap with your planned hours.
- Check radiant altitude. Use a shower-specific, location-aware map to confirm that the radiant is above the horizon and identify when it is highest.
- Make a decision and recheck. Classify the session as promising, mixed or poor. Revisit the forecast near departure because cloud timing can change, then choose the clearest safe site and the darkest practical direction.
What to do when the forecast is mixed
Broken cloud
Do not apply a universal “safe” cloud-percentage cutoff. A small clear patch in the wrong part of the sky may reveal nothing, while rapidly moving gaps can provide excellent short bursts. Watch the cloud pattern and remain flexible about where you face. If a local forecast shows a later clearing trend, a shorter session may still be worthwhile.

A bright Moon
Keep the Moon out of your direct line of sight and look toward the darkest open sky. Expect fewer faint meteors, not necessarily zero meteors. If moonset occurs during the night, the post-moonset period may be the best part of the session even if the Moon was bright earlier.
Clouds at one location
Moving can help only when the alternate site is safe, legally accessible and supported by a forecast showing better conditions. A drive to a darker site does not solve a solid regional cloud deck. Check the alternate location’s hourly cloud and Moon information before leaving.
Simple observing setup: less equipment is better
The American Meteor Society recommends unaided-eye observing. Meteors move quickly and can appear over a broad area, so binoculars and telescopes’ narrow fields of view are disadvantages for a shower session.

- Bring warm layers even when the afternoon felt mild; remaining still outdoors makes the cold noticeable.
- Use a dim red light only if needed for notes, maps or walking. Bright white light temporarily reduces dark adaptation.
- Allow your eyes time to adapt after arriving, and keep nearby screens dim or covered.
- Choose an unobstructed, safe location away from traffic, cliffs, water hazards and lights.
No accessory can compensate for opaque cloud, a radiant below the horizon or a sky brightened by substantial artificial light.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Relying on the Moon phase alone
Correction: check local moonrise and moonset for the exact hours. Phase describes illumination but not whether the Moon is in your sky during the shower’s best interval.
Treating a clear-sky score as a weather forecast
Correction: pair the score with an hourly cloud source. Timeanddate’s astronomical visibility meter does not include local weather or cloud cover.
Using only the evening forecast
Correction: inspect each hour through dawn if that is when the radiant is best placed. Clouds can arrive or depart after midnight.
Assuming midnight to dawn is always best
Correction: verify the specific shower’s peak and radiant altitude. Midnight-to-dawn is common guidance from the American Meteor Society, not a rule for every shower and latitude.

Expecting a forecast to guarantee a meteor count
Correction: use forecasts to choose a better opportunity, then treat the visible rate as variable. Activity predictions, cloud models and human observing conditions all have uncertainty.
How to interpret a real planning scenario
Suppose a shower’s predicted peak falls on a Saturday night. Your hourly forecast shows widespread cloud from 9 p.m. to midnight, broken cloud from midnight to 2 a.m., and mostly clear conditions after 2 a.m. The Moon is above the horizon until 1:30 a.m., then sets. A location-aware sky map shows the radiant rising before midnight and climbing higher toward dawn.
The strongest overlap is after 2 a.m.: the radiant is high, the Moon is down and the cloud forecast is most favorable. The midnight-to-1:30 interval is mixed because broken cloud and moonlight act together. The early evening is poor because cloud blocks the sky. This conclusion comes from aligning the hourly conditions rather than labeling the entire night simply “good” or “bad.”

- Cancel or postpone when widespread cloud covers the whole useful window, the site is unsafe, or the radiant never rises high enough to provide a practical view.
- Keep a short backup window when cloud is broken and the Moon sets during the night. Set expectations for intermittent viewing rather than a continuous display.
- Continue despite moonlight when skies are clear and you mainly want to see bright meteors or the shower’s activity. Moonlight reduces faint trails but does not erase every meteor.
Rechecking shortly before the session is the final step. Weather services update their models, and cloud boundaries can move across a small observing area faster than a general forecast suggests.
Frequently overlooked details
Latitude changes the answer
The same shower can have a high radiant for one observer and a low radiant or no useful rise for another. Entering a city several hours away, or using a generic national forecast, can produce a misleading result.
Cloud location matters
A forecast’s percentage or color does not describe every direction equally. A clear western horizon does not help if the cloud bank covers the part of the sky you planned to use. Look at the map and the cloud movement when the service provides those details.
Darkness is more than moonlight
Streetlights, nearby buildings and atmospheric haze also raise the sky background. A new Moon helps, but it cannot remove artificial light pollution or obstructions.

Meteor rates are not appointments
A shower’s peak is a period of enhanced activity, not a schedule that guarantees a meteor at a particular minute. Patience and a wide view of the sky matter more than magnification.
Bottom line for planning tonight
Enter your exact location and date in three places: an hourly cloud forecast, a Moon-rise/set calculator and a shower-specific sky map or calendar. Choose the hours when clouds are least disruptive, the Moon is below the horizon or least intrusive, and the radiant is above the horizon. Recheck those conditions close to departure, then observe with your unaided eyes from the darkest safe part of the sky. That combination gives you an evidence-based answer about likely obstruction without pretending that any forecast can guarantee a meteor count.
