How to Check Whether an XRP Ledger Validator or Node Is Running Trusted Software

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: check two separate things. First, establish where your rippled executable came from and whether its installed version matches current official XRPL release guidance. Second, inspect the node’s validator-list signatures, trusted publisher keys, quorum, list expiration and ledger synchronization with rippled validators and rippled server_info. The runtime commands show whether the node is configured and synchronized correctly; they do not prove that the executable itself is authentic or has not been modified.

This distinction matters because an XRP Ledger Unique Node List (UNL) expresses which validators your server trusts for consensus. It is a network-configuration decision, not a cryptographic attestation of the local software binary.

What “trusted software” means on the XRP Ledger

There are two different trust questions behind the phrase “trusted software,” and they require different evidence.

Question What you are checking What the evidence can establish
Software provenance Installed rippled version, release channel, package source and any publisher integrity checks supplied by that channel Whether the program appears to come from the expected release source and matches its published integrity information
Runtime and network trust state Validator-list publishers, signatures, trusted validator keys, quorum, list status, expiration and synchronized ledgers Whether the node is using authenticated validator-list data and participating with a usable ledger history

A successful response from rippled validators or rippled server_info addresses the second row. Neither command, by itself, verifies the origin or integrity of the installed executable.

1. Identify the installed build before changing configuration

Begin with an inventory of the software actually running on the server. Record the installed rippled version and build identifier using the version-reporting method provided by your operating system package or installation instructions. Keep the exact output, package name, architecture and installation date in your change record.

Compare that record with the current official XRPL release and installation guidance for your operating system. Check the release channel you intended to use rather than assuming that every package named rippled came from the same publisher. A repository package, a manually downloaded archive and a locally built executable have different provenance questions.

  • Confirm that the reported version is an official release version, not an unexpected development build.
  • Confirm that the package source or repository is the one you deliberately configured.
  • Check whether the release guidance for that channel provides a cryptographic signature, checksum or other integrity record.
  • If such a publisher check is documented, perform it on the downloaded package before installation and retain the result with your deployment records.

The official material consulted for this guide does not provide a complete, current, source-backed procedure for verifying every rippled package or binary cryptographically. Do not invent a checksum command or treat a version string as proof of authenticity. If your release channel supplies no verifiable integrity record, document that limitation and use the runtime checks below only for configuration and health assurance.

2. Understand the UNL and publisher-key roles

A Unique Node List is the set of validators a server chooses to trust when evaluating consensus proposals. The validators listed in a UNL are not the same thing as the publisher that signs the list. A publisher key authenticates the list document; validator keys identify the individual validators included in that document.

The official validators-example.txt configuration uses two relevant sections:

  • [validator_list_sites] contains endpoints from which validator lists are fetched.
  • [validator_list_keys] contains the trusted publisher keys whose signatures are accepted.

The server considers a fetched list only when it carries a valid signature from a trusted publisher key. This protects the list data from an untrusted publisher, but it does not verify the local rippled executable.

The example configuration also warns that manually listing validator keys is not recommended for production networks. Relying on hand-entered keys can leave a server with a stale or poorly overlapping set of validators. Inadequate overlap between multiple lists can produce contradictory validated ledgers, so review list design rather than adding keys ad hoc.

3. Inspect the validator-list configuration

Open the configuration file used by the running service and verify that the list sites and publisher keys are the values you intend to trust. Do not assume that a file on disk is the file used by the service; confirm the service’s command line, working directory or package-specific configuration path first.

The current example configuration observed for this guidance names the endpoint https://unl.xrplf.org and the publisher key below:

[validator_list_sites]
https://unl.xrplf.org

[validator_list_keys]
ED42AEC58B701EEBB77356FFFEC26F83C1F0407263530F068C7C73D392C7E06FD1

Treat that endpoint and key as time-sensitive configuration, not permanent constants. Verify the current upstream example and migration instructions before copying them into a new deployment. A valid-looking key in a file is not enough: the runtime must show that the list was accepted, active and not expired.

Check for unsafe or stale overrides

  • Look for older list endpoints left in the file after a migration.
  • Check for duplicate or conflicting publisher-key entries.
  • Review any manually entered validator keys and remove them unless you have a documented production reason and a maintenance process.
  • Ensure multiple configured lists have enough validator overlap for the threshold and trust model you selected.
  • Save a copy of the configuration before editing so that you can revert a failed change.

4. Run rippled validators and interpret the result

After confirming the configuration, run the administrative command:

Publisher-list availability and expiration

The command reports the configured publisher lists and whether they are available. Check that the list you expect is present and that its expiration has not passed. An unavailable or expired list means the server may no longer be receiving current authenticated validator information, even if the process itself is still running.

Trusted publisher keys

Verify that the trusted publisher key shown by the command matches the key you intended to configure. Remember that this is the key that authenticates the list publisher, not a claim that every validator in the list is operated by that publisher.

List status

The status should indicate that the list is active. A historical migration example used an active status and displayed then-current counts and expiration details. Those counts and dates were examples for that period, not universal targets. Do not fail a node merely because its counts differ from an old sample; investigate whether the current list is valid, current and appropriate for your deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quorum and validator view

Review the quorum and the validator set reported by the command. Quorum is a property of the configured trust set, not a software-authenticity score. A plausible quorum with an outdated or incorrectly sourced list can still represent a bad configuration, so evaluate it together with list signature, publisher identity and expiration.

Capture the output after every list change. Keeping dated output makes it possible to identify when a publisher list stopped updating or when a key changed unexpectedly.

5. Run rippled server_info to check synchronization

Next run:

rippled server_info

Find the complete_ledgers field. A valid range indicates that the node has a usable portion of complete ledger history and has synchronized far enough to report it. An empty value, a malformed range or a range that does not advance warrants investigation before treating the node as healthy.

complete_ledgers is a synchronization and history signal. It does not attest to executable provenance, prove that the validator-list publisher is trustworthy, or guarantee that your node is participating in the consensus process you intended. Use it with the validators output, not as a substitute for either software-source review or list-signature checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a healthy combination looks like

  • The installed build matches the release channel you selected.
  • The configured publisher list is available and active.
  • The publisher key shown at runtime matches the key you approved.
  • The list has not expired.
  • The reported quorum and validator view are consistent with your configured trust policy.
  • complete_ledgers contains a valid, advancing range.

This combination supports a conclusion about configuration and operational state. It still does not prove that an attacker has not replaced the executable or altered the host outside the checks supplied by your package or release channel.

6. Account for the 2025 validator-list migration

XRPL Foundation migration guidance published on June 2, 2025 told operators using the old Foundation list to change the list endpoint and publisher key, restart rippled, and inspect rippled validators. That guidance stated that the old list would expire on January 18, 2026. That deadline has passed, so an operator who never migrated should treat the old configuration as a current incident, not as a future maintenance task.

The migration warning also noted that nodes relying only on the old list could stop connecting, and that some multiple-list threshold configurations could experience disruption. The correct response now is to verify the current official configuration and the live expiration shown by your node, rather than copying a historical expiration date into a new file.

  1. Review the current upstream validator-list example and migration instructions.
  2. Update the endpoint and publisher key only after confirming those current values.
  3. Restart the rippled service using your operating system’s normal service procedure.
  4. Run rippled validators and confirm that the intended list is active, available and unexpired.
  5. Run rippled server_info and confirm that complete_ledgers reports a valid range.
  6. Record the command output and configuration diff.

7. Troubleshoot common results

The list is expired

Do not extend an expiration date manually. Verify the current publisher endpoint and key from current official guidance, update the configuration, restart the service and re-run rippled validators. If the list remains expired, check outbound network access, DNS, system time and service logs, then confirm that the endpoint has not changed again.

The publisher key is different from the file

Stop and investigate before accepting the new key. A changed key may be a legitimate publisher rotation, a stale local file, a different configuration path or an unauthorized change. Compare the value with current upstream instructions, inspect the service’s effective configuration and preserve the unexpected output for review.

The list is unavailable

Check DNS resolution, firewall and proxy rules, TLS interception, outbound HTTPS access and the service account’s permissions. An HTTP endpoint that cannot be reached cannot provide a current signed list, even if the last cached data still appears in local files.

complete_ledgers is empty or does not advance

Investigate synchronization rather than changing validator keys at random. Check service logs, peer connectivity, available disk space, system clock and the node’s ability to obtain ledger history. Once the underlying synchronization issue is corrected, run server_info again and confirm that the range becomes valid and progresses.

The node reports a healthy quorum but the binary source is uncertain

Keep the runtime result and software-provenance result separate. A healthy quorum shows that the node has a functioning trust configuration; it cannot compensate for an unverified package. Reinstall from a release channel with documented integrity checks, or obtain an independent operational review of the host and deployment pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Build a repeatable verification record

For production operations, perform the checks as a change-controlled procedure rather than a one-time glance at command output. Record:

  • Hostname, operating-system release and service account.
  • Installed rippled version, build identifier and package source.
  • The effective configuration path and a redacted configuration snapshot.
  • Validator-list endpoints and trusted publisher keys.
  • The date and time of each rippled validators and rippled server_info run.
  • List availability, active status, expiration, quorum and the reported validator view.
  • The exact complete_ledgers value and whether it advances on a later check.
  • Any package signature or checksum result supplied by your release channel.

Schedule a review before list expiration, after every software upgrade, after every configuration change and whenever the node loses synchronization. Monitoring should alert on an expired or unavailable list and on a stalled complete_ledgers range, while a separate software-supply-chain process should monitor package and binary provenance.

What these checks can and cannot prove

They can show that your server is using validator-list data authenticated by a configured publisher key, that the list is active and current, that the reported quorum and validator set match your configuration, and that the server has a complete-ledger range indicating synchronization.

They cannot, on the evidence available here, provide a complete cryptographic verification of the installed rippled executable. A node can be synchronized while running a binary obtained from an unapproved source, and a correctly signed validator list can be consumed by a locally modified program. Treat executable provenance, validator-list trust and runtime synchronization as separate control points and require evidence for each one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision rule

Call the node operationally well configured when its installed release identity is accounted for, its validator list is authenticated by the intended publisher key, the list is active and unexpired, its quorum and validator view fit the trust policy, and complete_ledgers shows synchronization. Call the software itself cryptographically verified only when the package or binary’s release channel supplies an integrity procedure and that procedure succeeds. The two conclusions should never be merged.
