Check the game’s publisher information for an explicit 120fps mode, then verify that your Xbox and the entire display connection can output 120Hz at your chosen resolution. Xbox Series X|S supports output up to 120Hz—not 240Hz—so a 240Hz monitor cannot make an Xbox game run at 240Hz.
Check whether the specific game supports 120fps
Start with the title, not the monitor. Look on the game publisher’s official page, support site, patch notes, or in-game video and performance settings for an explicit 120fps or performance-mode option. Xbox’s Optimized for Series X|S overview says enhancements vary by game and directs players to the publisher for details. The Optimized badge can cover different improvements; it does not certify that a game runs at 120fps.

Use the exact game edition and platform when checking. A mode may depend on the Series X|S version, a particular graphics setting, or a game update. If publisher information does not specify a frame rate, do not assume that an “Performance” or “High Frame Rate” label means 120fps; check the game’s own explanation or ask its publisher.
Confirm that the Xbox can select 120Hz
- Open the display options: On the Xbox, go to Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Check the refresh-rate setting: See whether 120Hz is available. Xbox’s Series X|S hardware fact sheet says 120fps requires both supported content and a supported display; its TV guidance describes console output support up to 120Hz.
- Check the resolution combination: A display may support 120Hz at one resolution but not another. Verify the exact resolution and refresh rate in the TV or monitor maker’s specifications, including which HDMI input supports it.
- Check every device in the signal path: If the Xbox connects through an AV receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, or other intermediary, confirm that it supports the same resolution and refresh-rate combination. For troubleshooting, connect the Xbox directly to the display if possible and check again.
The console’s TV details screen can help identify supported modes. Epic’s Fortnite 120fps instructions provide an example of checking display details and choosing a refresh rate. A display’s headline panel specification alone does not prove that every input accepts 120Hz at the resolution you want.

Understand what 120fps and 120Hz tell you
FPS describes how many frames a game renders or delivers per second. Hz describes how often a display refreshes each second. To see a game’s full 120fps output, the game must support that mode and the Xbox-to-display path must accept 120Hz at the selected resolution. Selecting 120Hz in Xbox settings does not make every game render at 120fps.
Likewise, “Optimized for Series X|S” is not a promise of a particular frame rate. Xbox says optimized games can reach up to 120fps, but the specific enhancements vary by title. The publisher is the relevant source for a game’s actual modes.

Check FPS Boost separately for backward-compatible games
FPS Boost is a title-specific feature for selected backward-compatible games, not a general 120fps switch for the Xbox library. Xbox says you can check for the option under Manage Game > Compatibility Options when the feature is supported. You can also use the FPS Boost filter in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog. Check the exact game rather than assuming that every backward-compatible title has FPS Boost.

The official Xbox sources cited here set Series X|S output support at up to 120Hz. A 240Hz-rated display may accept Xbox output at a supported lower refresh rate, but its panel rating does not raise the console’s limit or establish that a specific Xbox game runs at 240fps. If you are choosing a display, compare its support for 120Hz at your intended resolution and HDMI input; a 240Hz rating matters only if you also have another device or use case that can take advantage of it.
