What “disc-to-digital” means on Xbox
Disc-to-digital conversion is an entitlement process. A supported physical game disc is used to claim a digital entitlement for the same title on the Microsoft/Xbox account signed in to the console. It is not a general service that turns every disc into a permanent license, and it is not the same thing as downloading a backward-compatible version.

Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026. Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president for next generation, said that “most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” He also described the actual check: “Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game.”

After a successful claim, the entitlement is associated with the account used during the process. Digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming may apply, but only when the individual title supports them. The physical disc remains usable as it was before.
Requirements before you test a disc
- Console with an optical drive: Xbox One or Xbox Series X. A Series S cannot read a game disc.
- Correct account: Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that should receive the digital entitlement. An entitlement claimed on the wrong account may not be available to the account you intended to use.
- Internet connection: Connect the console before inserting the disc. The announcement does not describe an offline eligibility method.
- Current system software: Install any available console updates before testing.
- Compatible disc generation: The announced feature covers most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs must be checked as backward-compatible titles instead.
- Working disc and drive: The console must be able to read the disc well enough to identify and launch the game.
Step-by-step: check a disc for a digital entitlement
-
Identify the game’s generation
Look at the disc and packaging to determine whether it is an Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox 360, or original Xbox release. Begin the disc-to-digital test with an Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc. Older Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles use the backward-compatibility catalog and should not be judged by the newer entitlement flow.
-
Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X
Insert the disc only into a console with an optical drive. Xbox Series X is the current hardware option if you need a console that can read the disc. Xbox Series S is digital-only; no setting, update, or account change can make it perform a physical-disc check.

Sign in to the intended account
Choose the account that should own the entitlement and sign in before starting the test. Confirm that you are not using a guest profile or a different family member’s account. The entitlement flow is account-sensitive, so changing accounts later can make the result appear inconsistent.
-
Connect the console and install updates
Make sure the Xbox is online and accept any available system update. Xbox’s announcement does not publish a separate offline eligibility procedure, so an offline test cannot establish that a disc qualifies.

-
Insert the disc
Place the game disc in the optical drive and wait for the console to identify it. If the console reports that it cannot read the disc, first treat that as a disc or drive problem; it is not evidence that the title is excluded from the program.
-
Launch the game
Start the game from the console’s disc prompt or game tile. Xbox specifically describes inserting a supported disc and launching the game as the action that can trigger a digital entitlement.

Look for the entitlement result
A supported disc produces an entitlement flow, or the title appears in the account’s digital library after the claim completes. Follow the on-screen confirmation and allow the digital version to install if the console offers it. The appearance of this flow is the practical confirmation that this particular disc is supported.
-
Record what happened
Note the exact game edition, region, console model, account, and message shown. If no entitlement option appears, do not conclude immediately that the disc is defective or that all copies of the game are excluded. Those details are needed to investigate title-specific or regional availability.
-
Test the resulting digital access
Open the digital library while signed in to the same account and verify that the game is listed. If the title advertises Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming, check those services separately; each benefit depends on support for that individual game.

Which console and disc combinations are relevant?
| Disc or console situation | What the evidence establishes | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One disc in an Xbox One | Most Xbox One disc-based games are covered by the announced feature, subject to title availability. | Sign in, connect and update, insert the disc, then launch the game. |
| Xbox One disc in an Xbox Series X | Xbox Series X has the optical drive required for the physical check; most Xbox One disc-based games are covered, subject to title availability. | Use the same insertion-and-launch entitlement flow. |
| Xbox Series X disc in an Xbox Series X | Most Xbox Series X disc-based games are covered, subject to title availability. | Insert the disc and launch while signed in and online. |
| Any physical disc in Xbox Series S | Series S has no disc drive and cannot read a physical game disc. | Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X to perform the check. |
| Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc | These titles belong to the separate backward-compatibility system, not the announced Xbox One/Series X disc-to-digital flow. | Check the backward-compatibility catalog for the exact title and its excluded-games information. |
How to tell a successful claim from an ordinary disc install
The key signal is an account entitlement, not merely a download. Xbox may download game data after you insert a disc, but that alone does not prove that the account received a standalone digital license. A successful disc-to-digital claim is indicated by the entitlement flow appearing after you launch the game or by the game being added to the digital library for the signed-in account.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the disc after claiming. Xbox’s announcement says the physical disc continues to work as it always has, while the claimed entitlement provides digital benefits where the title supports them. Store the disc and its case together, especially if you later need to verify the edition or region.
Disc-to-digital conversion versus backward compatibility
These systems solve different problems and have different play requirements.
Disc-to-digital entitlement
This is the newer Xbox One and Xbox Series X process described in the August 26, 2026 announcement. You insert a supported disc and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox says the feature is starting with thousands of titles and that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support it, while also making clear that not every title is available.
Backward compatibility
Backward compatibility applies to selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. When a compatible older disc is inserted, the console downloads the backward-compatible game. The disc must remain in the drive to play, because it acts as the ownership check. Use the official backward-compatibility catalog and its excluded-games information to determine whether a specific older title is supported.

Do not use the presence of a download as proof of disc-to-digital conversion. A backward-compatible download can still require the original disc every time you play.
Smart Delivery is a separate feature
Smart Delivery is a title-level, publisher-implemented system for providing the appropriate cross-generation version of a game. Xbox says a physical disc can support Smart Delivery when the developer or publisher implements it.
Smart Delivery by itself does not establish that a disc receives a standalone digital entitlement. A game can offer a cross-generation upgrade through Smart Delivery while still following its own ownership rules. Confirm the entitlement flow after inserting and launching the disc rather than inferring eligibility from a Smart Delivery label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming after a claim
Xbox says that, once an entitlement is claimed, players can experience digital benefits including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming “where supported.” Those services are conditional, not automatic for every converted disc.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Available only for titles that participate in the program. If supported, the entitlement can provide the participating Xbox and Windows version under that program’s rules.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Available only when the specific title is supported for cloud play and your account and service access meet the applicable requirements.
Check the game’s own Xbox listing or account library entry for these indicators. Do not assume that a successful disc claim grants Play Anywhere or cloud access to every game.

What to check when no entitlement prompt appears
An absent prompt is inconclusive until you rule out the common variables below.
Confirm the console generation
Make sure the test is happening on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X. A Series S cannot read the disc at all. If you used an older Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc, switch to the backward-compatibility catalog rather than repeating the newer procedure.
Verify the exact edition
Standard, deluxe, bundled, region-specific, and special-edition discs can have different product identities. Record the edition printed on the disc or case and compare it with the title shown by the console. Do not assume that a result for one edition applies to every release of the game.
Check the account
Sign out of guest or secondary profiles and repeat the test with the account that should own the entitlement. A successful claim belongs to the account used during the process, so a different profile may not show the title in its digital library.
Check the region
Regional availability can affect whether a title is offered. Note the disc’s region and the account’s store region, then consult current Xbox announcements or support information for that combination.
Update and reconnect
Install pending console updates, verify the network connection, and launch the game again. Because Xbox has not published an offline eligibility method for this feature, an offline result should not be treated as definitive.
Separate a drive problem from an eligibility problem
If other known-good discs also fail to read, troubleshoot the optical drive or disc condition first. If the console reads the game and launches it but no entitlement appears, focus on edition, region, account, generation, and title availability instead.

Quick Recap
Decision guide: which explanation fits your result?
| Observed result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Entitlement flow appears after insertion and launch | The disc is supported for the disc-to-digital feature. | Complete the claim, verify the digital library, and check title-specific Play Anywhere or cloud support. |
| Game installs but the disc is required every time | This is consistent with backward compatibility for a supported Xbox 360 or original Xbox title. | Verify the title in the backward-compatibility catalog. |
| Series S cannot detect the disc | The console is digital-only and cannot perform the check. | Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with an optical drive. |
| Disc is not read or the game will not launch | Could be a disc, drive, update, or compatibility issue; it does not by itself prove exclusion. | Test another disc, update the console, and verify the game generation. |
| Game launches but no entitlement appears | The title, edition, region, account, or availability may not qualify. | Record those details and check current Xbox support information. |
What you should remember
- The definitive practical test is insertion and launch on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X while signed in and online.
- Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every title is available.
- Xbox Series S cannot check a physical disc because it has no optical drive.
- Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs use backward compatibility; compatible discs generally must stay inserted to play.
- Smart Delivery does not, by itself, prove that a disc receives a separate digital entitlement.
- Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits apply only where the individual title supports them.
- Keep the original disc after a claim; Xbox says it remains usable while the digital entitlement provides supported digital benefits.
