How to Check Whether an Unsupported PC Can Run Windows 11

The reliable way to check is Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. On the Windows 10 computer, install or open the app, choose Check now in the Windows 11 section, and read the exact requirement it reports. Download the app from Microsoft’s PC Health Check page.

An “unsupported” result is not a complete diagnosis. It can mean that the processor or another component fails a minimum requirement, that a firmware setting needs investigation, that Windows has not reassessed a recent hardware change, or that a compatible computer simply has not been offered the upgrade yet.

Check Windows 11 compatibility in PC Health Check

  1. On the PC you want to upgrade, find or install Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. If it is not installed, use Microsoft’s download page.
  2. Open the app and locate its Windows 11 eligibility section.
  3. Select Check now.
  4. Read the result and the specific reason shown if the PC is ineligible. Treat that reason as the starting point for diagnosis, not as a generic verdict that every part of the computer is obsolete.
  5. Compare the failed item with Microsoft’s requirements below. For model-specific details, check the computer manufacturer’s specifications and support documentation rather than guessing which upgrade will help.

Microsoft describes PC Health Check as a way to see whether a computer meets the minimum requirements and, when it does not, why it is ineligible. The app is the most direct manual check; Windows Update performs its own eligibility assessment as well.

Understand the three different Windows 11 statuses

People often use “compatible,” “eligible,” and “offered” as if they mean the same thing. They do not.

Meeting the hardware requirements

A computer meets the hardware requirements when its processor, memory, storage, firmware, security module, graphics, and display satisfy Microsoft’s published minimums. A single failed item can make the device ineligible even when every other component is adequate.

Being eligible

PC Health Check uses Microsoft’s eligibility assessment to report whether the particular configuration qualifies. Passing the check means the device meets the minimum eligibility conditions identified by Microsoft; it does not promise that every Windows 11 feature or application will work, because some features have additional requirements.

Having the upgrade offered through Windows Update

An eligible PC may not show a Windows 11 offer immediately. Microsoft says rollout timing varies by device, and a known compatibility issue can delay an offer while Microsoft or a device maker addresses it. Therefore, “Windows Update has not offered it” is not evidence that the computer failed the requirements.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements

The following are Microsoft’s published minimums. They are a baseline for eligibility, not a performance guarantee. See the full Windows 11 System Requirements page for Microsoft’s current wording.

Component Minimum requirement What the result means
Processor 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and present on Microsoft’s approved processor list Clock speed and core count alone are insufficient; the exact processor model must also be approved.
Memory At least 4 GB of RAM Less memory fails the baseline, but adding memory cannot repair a separate processor, firmware, or TPM failure.
Storage At least 64 GB Freeing disk space is not the same as increasing the drive’s capacity when the drive itself is below the requirement.
Firmware UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability The PC may need a manufacturer-supported firmware configuration; changing firmware settings without understanding the model can prevent the system from starting.
Security TPM version 2.0 The computer must expose a compatible TPM 2.0 implementation. A missing, disabled, or older TPM is a distinct issue from RAM or storage.
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver The graphics hardware and its driver must satisfy both parts of the requirement.
Display More than 9 inches diagonally, HD resolution (720p), and 8 bits per color channel A very small, low-resolution, or lower color-depth panel can fail even when the computer’s internal components qualify.

These figures are minimum thresholds, not recommended specifications for demanding games, creative software, or multitasking. Microsoft also notes that individual Windows 11 features can have extra hardware or account requirements. Passing the table therefore answers “does this meet the baseline?” rather than “will every feature run well?”

What to do when PC Health Check reports a failed requirement

Processor not approved

For processors, Microsoft’s approved-model list matters in addition to speed and core count. A fast processor that is absent from the list is still outside the published requirements. Do not assume that a newer driver, a BIOS setting, or additional RAM can change that result. Check the exact model identifier in the PC maker’s documentation and compare it with Microsoft’s approved list. If the model is not approved, the practical supported choices are to keep using the current operating system while supported, replace the computer with one that meets the requirements, or follow an organization’s approved hardware-replacement plan.

TPM 2.0 reported as missing or disabled

PC Health Check may point to TPM rather than the processor. First confirm the exact computer model and whether its manufacturer documents TPM 2.0 support. Some systems have a compatible security module that is disabled in firmware; others have only an older version or no supported implementation. The check result alone does not establish which case applies. If you are not familiar with firmware menus, ask the manufacturer or a qualified technician before changing settings. Installing unrelated hardware or buying more memory will not correct a TPM-specific failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UEFI or Secure Boot issue

A Secure Boot result can reflect the firmware mode and configuration, not necessarily a permanently incompatible motherboard. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before changing from a legacy mode or altering boot settings. Firmware changes can affect bootability and encryption arrangements, so make a current backup and use the maker’s supported procedure. If the manufacturer does not document a supported UEFI/Secure Boot configuration for the model, treat the requirement as unresolved rather than forcing a change.

Insufficient RAM

If the app identifies memory as the failed item, verify the installed amount and the model’s maximum supported configuration in the manufacturer’s specifications. A memory upgrade may be feasible on some computers, but it is not automatically worthwhile: the computer must also pass the processor, firmware, TPM, storage, graphics, and display checks. Do not buy a module until the failed requirement and the exact model have been identified.

Insufficient storage

Distinguish drive capacity from available free space. A nearly full drive can often be cleaned, while a drive whose total capacity is below Microsoft’s minimum requires a model-compatible storage upgrade or a different computer. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for supported drive types, installation limits, and recovery procedures. More storage cannot compensate for an unapproved processor or a missing TPM.

Graphics driver or DirectX result

The graphics requirement covers both compatible graphics capability and a WDDM 2.0 driver. Check the computer maker’s driver support for the specific graphics device and Windows version. A driver update can only help when the underlying hardware is capable and the manufacturer supplies a supported driver; it cannot turn incompatible graphics hardware into a compliant device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Display requirement

If the display is flagged, verify its diagonal size, resolution, and color depth against the published minimum. An external monitor may change what you use day to day, but it does not necessarily change the built-in panel reported for a laptop or all-in-one. Consult the manufacturer if PC Health Check and the published specifications disagree.

How to choose a sensible fix

Do not start by buying the cheapest component or by following a generic upgrade guide. Start with the failed requirement and the exact model number. Then compare the following paths:

Path When it can make sense Main limitation
Supported firmware change The manufacturer explicitly documents TPM 2.0 or UEFI/Secure Boot support for that model. A wrong setting can affect booting or encryption; it does not solve an unapproved CPU.
RAM upgrade The PC has less than 4 GB and the manufacturer lists a compatible, supported memory configuration. The machine must still pass every other requirement, and the cost may not be worthwhile on an old system.
Storage upgrade The drive’s total capacity is below 64 GB and the model supports a larger replacement. Free space and total capacity are different; storage cannot fix firmware, TPM, graphics, or CPU failures.
Repair or diagnostic help You cannot identify a TPM, firmware, or model-specific configuration issue safely. Ask for a diagnosis based on the exact model and failed check, not a blanket promise that Windows 11 can be installed.
Replacement PC The processor is not approved, several requirements fail, or upgrades are unavailable. The purchase cost is higher upfront, but it avoids unsupported-device limitations.
Continue with the current system The PC remains useful and you are following the applicable support and security policy. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so review Microsoft’s current support options rather than assuming the old policy continues.

There is no universal cheapest fix. A low-cost RAM or storage upgrade is only sensible when it addresses the reported failure and the rest of the computer qualifies. If the processor is not on Microsoft’s list, spending money on unrelated parts changes nothing about eligibility.

Refresh the assessment after a hardware change

If you have already changed a component or enabled a supported firmware option, run PC Health Check again. Microsoft says the eligibility information shown in Windows Update can take up to 24 hours to refresh after a hardware change. Its support guidance also describes a way to refresh the assessment manually; follow the current instructions in Microsoft’s PC Health Check support article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use the absence of an immediate Windows Update offer as proof that the change failed. Confirm the new state in PC Health Check first, then allow for the assessment and rollout delays.

If PC Health Check says eligible but Windows Update shows no upgrade

There are two separate questions: does the computer meet the minimums, and is Microsoft offering the upgrade to this device now? A “yes” to the first does not force a “yes” to the second. Microsoft varies rollout timing and can place a temporary compatibility hold on a device when a known issue could affect the upgrade experience.

Check Windows Update again later, keep the existing system backed up, and consult the device maker’s compatibility notices. Avoid interpreting a delayed offer as permission to bypass checks or as evidence that a component must be replaced.

Common mistakes when checking an unsupported PC

  • Reading “unsupported” as a complete diagnosis: Open the detailed result and identify the individual failed requirement.
  • Relying on clock speed alone: Microsoft also requires an approved processor model and at least two cores.
  • Confusing free space with drive capacity: Cleaning files cannot turn a drive smaller than 64 GB into a 64 GB drive.
  • Changing firmware without a model guide: A legacy-to-UEFI or Secure Boot change can affect booting and encryption.
  • Assuming an external monitor fixes a laptop display result: The built-in panel may still be the one assessed for the device.
  • Buying a TPM module or RAM first: Confirm that the exact model supports the part and that this is the reported failure.
  • Using installation media as a compatibility test: A USB installer is an installation method, not proof that the hardware is supported.
  • Assuming eligibility means immediate delivery: Rollouts and compatibility holds can delay Windows Update.

Work or school computers need an administrator’s decision

On a computer managed by an employer or school, local eligibility is only part of the decision. Policies, applications, security controls, and testing schedules can determine when an upgrade is allowed. Microsoft advises users of managed PCs to ask their IT administrator about eligibility and upgrading. Do not change firmware, install an alternate edition, or use installation media against organizational policy.

Should you install Windows 11 on hardware that fails?

Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet the minimum requirements. Its official notice, updated December 12, 2024, says: Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. Microsoft also states that an unsupported device is outside normal support, may experience compatibility problems, and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. Its notice says warranty coverage does not cover damage attributed to lack of compatibility. Read the full disclaimer at Windows 11 on devices that don’t meet minimum system requirements.

Those consequences are different from a failed eligibility check. A workaround may allow an installation to proceed, but it does not make the hardware supported or convert an unapproved processor into an approved one. Treat any unsupported installation as a risk decision, not as a compatibility fix.

What a USB installer can and cannot do

Microsoft’s Ways to install Windows 11 guidance, updated February 4, 2025, includes installation media such as a USB drive. The media is an installation method, not an eligibility checker. Creating or using it does not repair a failed requirement, remove Microsoft’s support limitations, or guarantee updates. Use it only after understanding the consequences and confirming that the target computer is eligible or that you deliberately accept the unsupported-device risks.

What Windows 10 support ending means

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 under its standard support policy. This date does not mean a Windows 10 computer instantly stops working; it means the support and security position has changed. A practical decision checklist

  • Run PC Health Check and record the specific failed requirement, if any.
  • Verify the exact PC model and component specifications with the manufacturer.
  • For a processor failure, check Microsoft’s approved-model list; do not assume a speed or memory upgrade will help.
  • For TPM or Secure Boot, confirm whether the manufacturer supports the required firmware configuration before changing settings.
  • For RAM or storage, confirm that the exact model supports the proposed upgrade and that every other requirement passes.
  • After a supported hardware or firmware change, rerun PC Health Check and allow Windows Update up to 24 hours to refresh its assessment.
  • If PC Health Check passes but Windows Update does not offer Windows 11, account for rollout timing and compatibility holds.
  • For a work or school computer, ask IT before making any change.
  • If the device remains ineligible, choose between continued use under the applicable support policy and replacing it with a computer that meets Microsoft’s requirements; do not treat a USB installer as a repair.

Why does my PC say it does not meet Windows 11 requirements?

The app may have found an unapproved processor, less than 4 GB of RAM, less than 64 GB of storage, missing or disabled TPM 2.0, an unsupported UEFI/Secure Boot configuration, incompatible graphics or driver support, or a display below Microsoft’s minimum. Check the exact reason rather than treating the message as a general failure.

Can I fix an unsupported processor by adding RAM or storage?

No. Microsoft requires the exact processor model to appear on its approved list, in addition to speed and core count. RAM or storage upgrades address only their own requirements and cannot change processor eligibility.

What if PC Health Check says eligible but Windows Update has no Windows 11 offer?

Eligibility and offer timing are separate. Microsoft varies rollout timing and may delay an offer because of a known compatibility issue. Check again later rather than assuming the PC failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I wait after upgrading hardware?

Microsoft says Windows Update eligibility information can take up to 24 hours to refresh after a hardware change. Rerun PC Health Check first and follow Microsoft’s current instructions for manually refreshing the assessment if needed.

Is installing Windows 11 from a USB drive a safe way to bypass the check?

A USB drive is an installation method, not a compatibility fix. Microsoft does not recommend installing on hardware below its minimums, warns of compatibility problems and lack of guaranteed updates, and says the device is outside normal support.

Should I change TPM or Secure Boot settings myself?

Only if the PC manufacturer documents a supported configuration for the exact model and you understand the boot and encryption implications. Otherwise, ask the manufacturer, your IT administrator, or a qualified technician.

Does an external monitor fix a failed laptop display requirement?

Not necessarily. The built-in panel may still be the display assessed for a laptop or all-in-one. Check the manufacturer’s specifications if the app and the published specifications disagree.

The Bottom Line

Use Microsoft PC Health Check, select Check now, and act on the specific failed requirement. Verify any proposed fix against the exact computer model, allow up to 24 hours for Windows Update to refresh after a supported change, and remember that eligibility does not guarantee an immediate upgrade offer. A USB installer cannot make unsupported hardware supported, and Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on a PC below its minimum requirements.
