Using an OpenAI model, displaying the OpenAI name, or connecting a GitHub repository to an OpenAI service does not by itself prove affiliation. To verify a claim, find a current OpenAI-controlled announcement, project listing, direct statement, or authentic written authorization that names the exact project and defines the relationship. Then describe only the relationship that evidence supports: API customer, contributor, grantee, program participant, partner, or OpenAI-owned project.
What “affiliated with OpenAI” can mean
Affiliation is not a single technical status. A project can interact with OpenAI in several ways that have very different implications:

Use the narrowest accurate category. “Uses the OpenAI API” is a technical fact. “OpenAI lists this project as a participant in a named program” is a program fact. “Official OpenAI project” is a much broader ownership or endorsement claim and needs correspondingly strong evidence.
The evidence standard that should decide the question
The strongest evidence comes from OpenAI-controlled communications that name the exact project and state the relationship. A current announcement, official program roster, project page hosted on an OpenAI-controlled domain, or direct written authorization can support a carefully scoped conclusion. The source should identify both which project is involved and what OpenAI has agreed to do.

OpenAI’s Design Guidelines tell third parties: “Do not misrepresent your relationship with OpenAI, imply endorsement, or confuse users about sponsorship.” The same guidance permits accurate references to particular OpenAI models or APIs. That distinction is important: a factual model reference can be legitimate while an unsupported “official partner” label is misleading.

A step-by-step verification workflow
1. Capture the exact claim
Save the project’s name, repository URL, page URL, wording, and date. Record whether it says “official,” “partner,” “supported by,” “funded by,” “powered by,” “uses the API,” or something else. These expressions are not interchangeable. Take a screenshot or archive the page if the claim could change, and note whether the statement appears in a README, a release note, a funding announcement, a social post, or a legal/press page.
2. Search OpenAI-controlled sources
Search OpenAI’s official site, announcements, program pages, help materials, and verified communications for the exact project name and repository. Prefer a page that names the project rather than a general page describing a program. Check spelling, organization names, repository links, publication dates, and whether the page is still current. A generic statement that OpenAI supports open source cannot prove that a particular project was accepted or funded.

3. Verify repository control and maintainers
Inspect the GitHub owner or organization, commit history, release signing information, maintainers’ profiles, and links from any official project page. Look for an explicit ownership transfer or statement identifying OpenAI as the controlling organization. A repository can be public, mirror another project, or be maintained by an independent developer while using OpenAI services. None of those facts alone establish OpenAI ownership.
OpenAI’s guide for connecting GitHub to ChatGPT explains that users authorize access to selected repositories and that an organization administrator may need to approve application access. This is evidence about permissioned access to particular repositories, not a statement that OpenAI owns, funds, or endorses every repository reachable through that connection.

4. Separate verification from affiliation
Check what, exactly, has been verified. OpenAI’s API Organization Verification guidance states: “Approval for one product, organization, workspace, or access path does not necessarily activate another one.” An approved organization or functioning API account therefore proves only the stated verification or access status. It does not automatically prove acceptance into a developer program, ownership of a repository, or a formal partnership.
5. Test program and funding claims
When a project invokes an OpenAI program, locate the program’s official terms and acceptance records. The Codex open-source fund application asks applicants which open-source project they represent and requests its GitHub repository. The page describes a $1 million initiative and grants of up to $25,000 in API credits, but it also says applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and funding decisions are at OpenAI’s sole discretion. An application, invitation to apply, or mention of the fund is not proof that a project was accepted or funded.
Only an official page naming the project as accepted, supported, or awarded should be reported as participation. Include the program name, announcement date, and the exact benefit. Do not turn participation in one program into a claim of general OpenAI affiliation.
6. Request direct confirmation when records conflict
Ask the maintainer for the exact OpenAI announcement, program listing, or authorization supporting the claim. Verify that the document is addressed to the relevant organization, covers the named project, and is current. For questions about logo use or communications beyond the listed cases, OpenAI’s brand guidance directs users to its partner-communications and legal contact routes. Use those channels for a disputed or legally consequential claim rather than relying on visual branding or an unverified screenshot.
7. Write a narrow, dated conclusion
State what the evidence establishes and what it does not. Suitable formulations include:

- “The repository documentation shows that the project uses OpenAI’s API.”
- “OpenAI lists the project as a participant in [named program] as of [date].”
- “The repository is maintained by [organization]; no OpenAI ownership statement was found.”
- “The project claims to be an OpenAI partner, but I could not verify that claim from the public sources checked.”
The last formulation does not prove that no private agreement exists. It accurately describes the limits of the public evidence you examined.
How to assess common signals without overreading them
OpenAI API or model references
Read the dependency files, configuration examples, API calls, and model names to establish technical use. Confirm whether the reference is current, optional, or merely an example. A project may support several providers or use an OpenAI model only in one feature. Report the exact model or API documented; do not convert “powered by” marketing language into a partnership claim.
OpenAI names and logos
A logo is not independent confirmation because the project itself controls the page where the mark appears. OpenAI’s brand rules prohibit misrepresenting a relationship, implying endorsement, or confusing users about sponsorship. They also restrict how marks may be used on merchandise. Treat an unlinked logo, badge, or “official” label as an assertion requiring first-party corroboration.
GitHub access, forks, and integrations
Repository access is granular and permissioned. A developer may authorize an application to read one repository while withholding others; an organization administrator may approve access for an organization. A fork can retain history from an upstream project without sharing ownership. Check the owner, transfer records, maintainers, and official links rather than inferring status from the fact that an integration works.
Verification badges and approved organizations
Identity or organization verification can be necessary for particular products, models, features, or programs. It remains bounded by the scope communicated by OpenAI. A verified API organization is not automatically a verified partner, grantee, or owner of every project its employees operate.

Funding applications and invitations
An application records intent and eligibility information; it does not record acceptance. An invitation to apply is likewise not an award. Look for an acceptance notice or official recipient list before describing a project as funded or supported. If the terms say decisions are discretionary, preserve that qualification.

For each claim, keep a compact record so another person can reproduce your conclusion:
- Exact project and repository names, including the owner or organization.
- The claim’s wording, page location, publication date, and date you checked it.
- OpenAI-controlled sources searched and the exact page that confirms or fails to confirm the relationship.
- Relationship category: API use, customer status, contributor, program participation, funding, partnership, or ownership.
- Scope limits, such as one repository, workspace, product, program, or time period.
- Any contradictory statements, redirects, deleted pages, or unverifiable screenshots.
- The final sentence you are prepared to publish, with uncertainty stated plainly.
Use primary sources first. A third-party article can point you toward a lead, but it should not outrank a current OpenAI announcement or authorization. Recheck volatile pages before publication because brand rules, program availability, and product access can change.
Red flags that should stop an “official” conclusion
- The only proof is an OpenAI logo, a model name, or a “powered by” badge.
- The project cites an OpenAI program but provides no acceptance notice or recipient listing.
- The repository owner is an unrelated individual or company and no transfer or authorization is documented.
- The claim relies on a verified API account, while the alleged relationship concerns funding or partnership.
- The source uses “partner” or “official” without naming the product, program, duration, or obligations.
- The evidence is a cropped screenshot with no URL, date, or way to authenticate it.
- An old announcement is being used to describe a relationship that may have ended or changed.
- The project’s statement conflicts with OpenAI’s current brand or program guidance.
Worked conclusions for typical cases
The README says “official OpenAI tool,” but the code uses an OpenAI model
Verify the API call and record the model name as technical evidence. Search OpenAI-controlled sources for the exact repository. If none names it as an OpenAI project, publish the narrower finding: the project uses the specified OpenAI model, while its official-status claim is unverified.

The team received API credits through a named fund
Find an OpenAI announcement or recipient listing that names the project. If confirmed, identify the fund and the date. Credits or a grant support the program-participation claim; they do not establish that OpenAI owns the code or endorses every feature.
An organization verified its identity and can access a product
Report the verification and product scope exactly as OpenAI describes it. Do not infer that the organization is an OpenAI partner or that its unrelated repositories are affiliated.
A maintainer says OpenAI has a private agreement
Ask for written confirmation that covers the project and the claimed relationship. If the document cannot be authenticated or disclosed, say that the claim could not be verified publicly. Do not call it false solely because no public announcement exists.
When to seek legal or platform guidance
If the question affects trademark use, fundraising representations, investor disclosures, procurement, security decisions, or a dispute, preserve the evidence and seek advice from the relevant legal or compliance professional. OpenAI’s brand guidance provides a contact route for questions about logo use and communications outside its stated cases. Technical documentation can establish API usage, but it cannot by itself settle a contractual or trademark dispute.
Final decision rule
Call a project affiliated with OpenAI only when an authoritative source identifies the exact project and specifies the relationship. Otherwise, describe the observable fact—such as API use, repository access, verification, or an application—and label broader affiliation as unverified. This approach remains accurate even when a private arrangement may exist, because it separates what the evidence demonstrates from what it merely suggests.
