A sale badge does not prove that you are saving money. To judge an online discount, check the price history of the exact item, compare its final checkout cost with other offers, read the conditions, and verify the seller and return terms. A large “percent off” is only useful if the reference price is meaningful and the offer works for your needs.
Start by matching the exact product
Before comparing prices, confirm that each listing is for the same item. Check the manufacturer and model number, size, color, condition, seller, and everything included in the box. A newer model, refurbished unit, different capacity, or bundle with extra accessories is not a like-for-like comparison.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends recording identifying details such as the manufacturer or model number, along with size and color, when comparing offers. Its online-shopping guidance also advises checking product condition and the terms of the offer.
Check the item’s actual price, not just the sale badge
Look at the retailer’s own price history where available, then compare current offers from other retailers. A price-history chart or alert can help show whether a price is unusually low for that item, but inspect what the service is actually tracking: the exact model, seller, condition, and time period matter. A marketplace listing from a different seller or a used item may not be comparable to the retailer’s new-product offer.

Comparison services vary. The FTC cautions that some comparison-shopping sites may promote their own products or rank sellers based on payment. Check more than one credible source and, when possible, confirm a price on the retailer’s own product page. Treat a chart as evidence to evaluate, not as proof by itself.
Prices can also change over time. The FTC says businesses may use dynamic pricing, for example in response to demand or inventory, as long as the pricing information is not misleading. A recent change does not by itself establish that a sale is deceptive; the key question is whether the advertised comparison gives shoppers an accurate impression of the deal.

Ask where the “was” price came from
Look for an explanation of the crossed-out, list, or reference price. Was the item actually sold or offered at that price, and for how long? A high comparison price that was rarely charged can make the apparent reduction look larger than the practical saving.

The rules depend on where you shop. In the EU, the European Commission describes the discount reference as the lowest price applied during the preceding 30 days. On 26 March 2026, the Commission reported that 30% of 314 online traders it checked referenced discounts incorrectly in a sweep focused on Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. It also found that 34% of traders displayed price comparisons, and 60% of that group did not clearly explain where the reference prices came from. These are findings about the traders checked in that sweep—not an estimate of how all online retailers behave. Check current national rules and exceptions if you need to assess legal compliance.

In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has separate guidance on transparent price presentation, including mandatory charges. Its 2024 reference-pricing principles for online mattress sellers say that a “was/now” reference price should reflect sales in sufficient volume and over a sufficient duration at or above that price. This is a mattress-sector example, not a universal test for every product or market. In the US, FTC guidance addresses deceptive pricing and promotions, but the guidance cited here does not establish a general 30-day reference-price rule.
Calculate what you will actually pay
Compare the total payable price, not only the product price shown on the listing. Account for shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and mandatory fees, then check the amount shown through checkout before placing the order. A low headline price may cease to be a good deal once required charges are included.

In the UK, the CMA’s price-transparency guidance addresses mandatory fees, drip pricing, and partitioned pricing—the presentation of a price in separate parts. In the US, the FTC’s fee-rule FAQ discusses transparent price presentation and conditional promotions. The applicable rules depend on the seller, transaction, and jurisdiction.

Read the offer details for requirements such as a loyalty account, coupon, minimum spend, bundle, subscription, financing, or purchase of another item. If you would not otherwise buy the extra item or accept a recurring charge, include that cost in your decision rather than treating the advertised reduction as a straightforward saving.
Some discounts apply only after you meet stated conditions. FTC guidance says that for conditional promotions, the total price should not reflect the discount until the customer meets the requirements. Where both prices are shown, its guidance says the generally available total should receive prominence. Verify what you qualify for and what the checkout actually charges.
Check the seller and the terms of the offer
A good price is not enough if the seller, delivery, or returns are unclear. Before paying, look for:
- A clear seller identity and contact information, including whether the retailer or a marketplace seller is fulfilling the order.
- Delivery estimates, shipping costs, and any stated handling fees.
- Return and refund terms, including whether sale items have different conditions.
- Warranty details and any limits on coverage.
- Condition notes such as refurbished, open-box, used, or vintage.
- Price-match terms, if you intend to ask the retailer to match another offer.
The FTC’s online-shopping advice recommends checking offer details, total cost, product condition, and refund policies. It also notes that comparison-shopping sites are not all alike, so confirm important claims with the seller.
Use extra caution with unusually cheap social-media offers
A very low price in a social-media ad can be a reason to investigate, but low price alone does not prove fraud. Search for the seller outside the platform and compare the exact product elsewhere. Check the seller’s contact details, shipping, warranty, and return policy before buying. For a suspicious offer, the FTC recommends considering a credit card: it says a card may let you dispute a charge if the goods do not arrive as ordered.
See the FTC’s advice on low-priced social-media offers for these checks. Do not rely on an ad’s link or urgency message as your only way to verify the business.
