Search for the clinician’s full name and profession, then confirm the license status and any restrictions or disciplinary information. The clinician’s business address or the telehealth company’s headquarters does not by itself establish authorization to treat you.
For physicians and physician assistants, the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) offers a second, centralized check through its Physician Data Center. Use it to cross-check a state-board result, not to replace the current record maintained by the state regulator.

Why the patient’s state and the provider’s profession matter
Telehealth licensing is generally tied to the patient’s location, not the clinician’s physical location. FSMB’s state policy summary, updated in August 2025, reports that medical boards generally require a physician practicing telemedicine to hold a license in the state where the patient is located, or to use a state registration system when that state provides one. Because statutes, board rules and registration options differ, the state board’s current instructions control your situation.

Start by identifying exactly who will provide care. “Online medical provider” can mean a physician (MD or DO), physician assistant (PA), nurse practitioner, registered nurse, psychologist, social worker, licensed professional counselor, therapist or another regulated professional. Each profession can have a different licensing authority and lookup system. The FSMB directory and Physician Data Center described below are primarily useful for physicians and PAs; they do not establish the license status of every health profession.

If you will be in one state for the appointment but the clinician is in another, use the state where you will actually receive the service. If you are traveling, temporarily staying elsewhere or move between visits, ask the provider and the relevant board which location governs that encounter rather than assuming the rule follows your home address.
The three evidence routes, and what each one proves
| Route | What it can establish | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| State medical or professional board lookup | The regulator’s record for a named license in the state where care is received. | Primary check for current authorization, status, restrictions and board-posted discipline. | Search fields, status labels and the amount of public detail vary by state and profession. |
| FSMB Physician Data Center (PDC) | Verified physician and PA licensure and disciplinary information supplied by state medical and osteopathic boards. | Cross-checking a physician or PA identity, licenses and sanctions across states. | It is not a universal directory for every health profession and does not replace the patient-state board’s current determination. |
| National Provider Identifier (NPI) | An identifier that can help distinguish one provider from another. | Matching the person in a board record to the person named by a telehealth service. | Having an NPI is not proof of an active state license or permission to practice. |
FSMB’s PDC Query profiles are described as containing verified biographical, license and education information, with an NPI among the profile elements. Use those fields to confirm identity, then make the licensing decision from the state record.
Step-by-step: verify an online provider before an appointment
1. Gather the provider’s exact details
Before searching, copy the name and credentials exactly as shown in the appointment confirmation, consent form or clinician profile. Record:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Full legal or professional name, including a middle initial or suffix.
- Credential, such as MD, DO, PA, NP, psychologist or counselor.
- License number, if the provider or company publishes one.
- The state where you will be located during the visit.
- The telehealth service’s legal business name and the clinician’s stated practice address.
- An NPI, if supplied, for identity matching only.
Do not treat the company name as the license holder. A business can employ or contract with many clinicians, while the individual license belongs to the named professional.
2. Choose the regulator for the profession
For an MD or DO, begin with the state medical or osteopathic board identified by the state. A PA may be regulated through a medical board or another state agency. Nurse practitioners, psychologists, therapists and other professionals may have separate boards or departments. If the provider’s profile does not make the credential clear, ask the service for the person’s license type and number before relying on a search result.
FSMB’s Contact a State Medical Board directory is a practical starting point for finding a state board’s official website and contact details. Open the board’s own domain from that directory rather than relying on a commercial directory or a search-ad result.

3. Select the patient’s state
Choose the state in which you will be sitting when the clinician provides the consultation. A provider may be licensed in the state where the provider lives and still need authorization in your state. FSMB’s August 2025 telemedicine summary describes the general pattern, but it also emphasizes state variation; confirm the rule with your regulator when the situation is unusual.

On the board website, look for labels such as “License Verification,” “Licensee Search,” “Provider Lookup” or “Online Services.” Board websites do not use identical layouts. Confirm that the page is operated by the state agency and that it identifies the profession you are checking.
Some boards offer a separate disciplinary-action search or downloadable orders. Follow those links if they are part of the board’s official system. A page that merely lists a provider’s name without a license status is not enough to establish current authorization.
5. Search by name, then narrow with identifiers
Enter the clinician’s surname and given name. Try a middle initial, alternate spacing, or a credential-specific search if the board permits it. When several people appear, compare the license number, city, specialty, birth year or other identifying field that the board makes public. Do not select a record solely because the name looks familiar.
Save the result’s web address or download the board’s verification document when available. Note the date and time of the search because public records can change.

- Whether the authorization is active, inactive, expired, suspended, restricted, surrendered or otherwise limited.
- Practice restrictions, probation terms or conditions.
- Board-posted disciplinary orders, reprimands or sanctions.
- Contact information for the licensing agency if the record is unclear.
Status terms are not standardized across all states. Read the board’s definitions and any linked order instead of assuming that “listed,” “registered” or “in good standing” means the same thing everywhere. A record can identify a real clinician while still showing an authorization that is expired or subject to restrictions.
7. Cross-check a physician or PA in the PDC
For an MD, DO or PA, use the PDC Query when a second verification is useful. FSMB says the PDC provides verified license and disciplinary information from state medical and osteopathic boards, along with biographical and education information. Compare the person’s name, states, license details and any sanctions with the state-board record.
A PDC result that differs from the state lookup is a reason to pause, not a reason to choose the more favorable entry. Records can be updated on different schedules, and the patient-state board is the place to resolve a question about authorization in that state. Contact the board using the details in the FSMB directory or on the board’s official site.
8. Use an NPI only to confirm identity
An NPI can help you determine whether two records refer to the same individual, especially when names are common. FSMB lists the NPI separately from license verification in PDC profile information. It is an identifier, not a license, and it does not demonstrate that the provider is currently authorized to practice in your state.
9. Keep a verification record
For ongoing care, save the board result, the provider’s license number, the search date and any correspondence with the regulator. Recheck before a new course of treatment if the provider changes states, credentials, practice names or telehealth platforms. A check made months earlier may not reflect a later suspension, expiration or restriction.
How to interpret common outcomes
An active record in your state
An active license in the patient’s state is the basic authorization signal for that profession. Confirm that the credential matches the service being offered and review any conditions or disciplinary information attached to the record. A license alone does not verify a clinician’s specialty, quality, insurance participation or suitability for your medical needs.

An expired, inactive or restricted record
Do not proceed on the assumption that the provider can practice normally. Read the board’s explanation and contact the regulator if the public record does not explain whether telehealth is permitted. Ask the service to identify another clinician with a verifiable, current authorization rather than accepting a promise that an update is pending.
No matching record
First check spelling, credential, state and whether you searched the correct profession. Ask the provider for the legal name used on the license and the license number. If the provider still cannot be matched, contact the board directly. A company directory, NPI listing or social-media profile is not a substitute for a board record.
A record in another state only
That result confirms, at most, that the person has or had an authorization in that other state. It does not answer whether the person may treat you where you are located. Ask the patient-state regulator whether a license, registration or another exception applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when records conflict or the website is unclear
- Capture both records. Write down the URLs, search dates, license numbers and the exact status wording.
- Check whether the entries describe the same person. Compare credentials, middle initials, practice location and any public identifying details.
- Look for an official update or order. A board may link a recent renewal, suspension order or disciplinary document separately from the main lookup.
- Call or email the board. Ask whether the named professional is currently authorized to provide telehealth to a patient located in your state and whether a special registration applies.
- Ask the provider for a written explanation. Request the license number, issuing state and the legal basis for treating patients in your location. Do not treat the explanation as a replacement for the regulator’s answer.
- Delay non-urgent care if authorization cannot be confirmed. For urgent symptoms, use an emergency service or another locally authorized option rather than waiting for an online verification dispute.
Board staff may not interpret every clinical circumstance for you, but they can direct you to the applicable license record, registration process or disciplinary information. Use the official contact details, not a phone number supplied only by the telehealth company.
Special situations that require extra care
The clinician and platform use different names
Some services market under a brand while billing or contracting through another legal entity. The individual clinician’s name and credential should still be available. Ask for the license holder’s full name and number, then search that person with the state board.
The provider changes during the visit
A platform may route you to a different clinician than the one shown in an advertisement or intake screen. Before discussing sensitive information, confirm the new clinician’s name and credential. Repeat the state-board check if the identity has changed.
Best Value
The service involves several professions
A medical consultation, prescription decision, therapy session and diagnostic service may be delivered by different professionals. Verify each person under the correct regulator. One clinician’s active license does not cover another person’s work.
A registration or special telehealth pathway is mentioned
Some jurisdictions have created registration or special-purpose pathways for out-of-state practice. FSMB’s state comparison published in 2021 illustrates that variation, but it is historical context rather than a current legal answer. Confirm any claimed pathway with the patient-state board and ask whether the registration applies to the specific profession and service.
Why older telemedicine summaries cannot replace a current lookup
Telemedicine policies change. FSMB’s Telemedicine Policies by State summary is identified as last updated in August 2025 and is useful for understanding the general state-by-state landscape. FSMB’s broader 2021 comparison of regulations on telemedicine and out-of-state physicians demonstrates how rules can differ, but it should not be treated as the current rule for any state.

A practical verification checklist
- I know the clinician’s full name and exact credential.
- I identified the state where I will be located during care.
- I selected the regulator for that profession, rather than searching only the company name.
- I opened the official board lookup through a government or FSMB directory link.
- I matched the license number or other identifiers to the right person.
- I read the status, dates, restrictions and disciplinary information shown by the board.
- If the clinician is a physician or PA, I used the PDC as a cross-check where helpful.
- I treated an NPI as an identity aid, not proof of authorization.
- I contacted the board when the result was missing, conflicting or unclear.
- I saved the result and its search date for future reference.
Example: applying the process to a telehealth appointment
Suppose a telehealth platform assigns you a clinician identified as Jordan Lee, DO, and you will be in Colorado during the visit. First, record the exact spelling, DO credential and any license number supplied. Next, use FSMB’s state-board directory to open Colorado’s official medical-board site and search the physician record. If several Jordan Lees appear, use the license number and other public identifiers to select the correct person. Read the status and any restrictions.
If the board record is active but the platform’s profile lists a different license number, stop and ask the platform to explain the mismatch. You can also search the physician in PDC to compare verified biographical and license information. If the board cannot confirm authorization for a Colorado patient, do not rely on the fact that the clinician is licensed somewhere else; ask the board whether a Colorado registration or other legal pathway applies.
What a license check does—and does not—tell you
A license lookup answers a narrow but important question: whether the named professional has the state authorization shown by the regulator for the relevant profession. It does not rate medical competence, guarantee a diagnosis, confirm that a prescription is appropriate, establish insurance coverage or prove that a telehealth company follows every privacy and clinical requirement.
Use licensing verification as the foundation of a broader safety decision. Confirm who will treat you, where you will be located, what credential that person holds and whether the regulator lists conditions or discipline. When the official record and the provider’s claims do not align, the state board—not a marketing page, NPI entry or third-party directory—is the place to settle the question.
