A store page or database entry alone is not enough: listings can remain online after a game is delisted, and a disc or cartridge may not work on a newer system.
Use the process below before paying. It separates four decisions—what version you want, where it can still be bought, whether your device supports it, and what ownership or online requirements remain.

Start by defining the exact RPG you want
“The game” is often several materially different releases. An original computer version, a console port, a remaster and a complete edition may have different files, languages, expansions, copy protection and hardware requirements. Availability must be checked against one precise release, not a franchise name.

- Full title: Include subtitles, episode numbers and regional spelling.
- Edition: Note original release, remaster, remake, complete edition or a bundle.
- Platform: Specify Windows, macOS, Linux, a particular console generation, handheld or another system.
- Region: Store catalogues, language support, ratings and physical formats can differ by country.
- Content: List wanted expansions, downloadable chapters, patches, manuals or bonus material.
- Language: Check whether you need a particular text or voice language rather than assuming every edition includes it.
Write this information down before searching. A listing for a remaster does not prove that the original has survived, and a listing for one console generation does not prove that the same disc works on its successor.

Check official sources first
Begin with the publisher or developer’s current website, then open the official store for your target platform. Search the exact title and edition, including punctuation and subtitles. The best evidence of a current sale is an active purchase control that leads through the store’s normal checkout process.
What an active listing should show
- A price or other clearly stated offer condition.
- A purchase, download or add-to-library action that is available in your region.
- The exact edition and included content.
- Supported operating systems or console platforms.
- Account, launcher, DRM, activation or online-service requirements.
- Current system requirements and installation notes.
An old news post, support article or product page retained for documentation is not proof of sale. If the page says the release is unavailable, discontinued or no longer offered, treat that as a negative result for that store even if screenshots, descriptions or manuals remain visible.
Search more than one authorized store
Repeat the search in other authorized storefronts serving your platform. A release can disappear from one catalogue while a successor edition remains available elsewhere. Conversely, a database may remember a former listing after every authorized store has stopped selling it. Record the store name, edition, region and date you checked so you can distinguish a current offer from an old reference.

Interpret a delisting precisely
A delisting means that a particular release is no longer purchasable through that store. It does not establish that every edition, platform or authorized sales route has vanished. Check three possibilities before concluding that the RPG is unavailable.
Look for a replacement edition
Publishers sometimes remove an older store release when a remaster or complete edition takes its place. Compare release notes and included content rather than assuming the replacement is identical. Missing expansions, altered music, changed interfaces, censorship differences or removed multiplayer features can matter to your decision.
Check another authorized release
An original edition may be gone from one storefront while a legitimate version continues on another. PCGamingWiki’s delisted-games reference documents examples of this pattern, including cases where a newer edition replaced an older store release or another authorized version continued to be sold. Use such references as leads, not as live inventory: verify the individual title on the current store page.

Separate sale status from access for existing owners
“Not for sale” and “cannot be downloaded by existing owners” are different conditions. A store may stop new purchases while retaining redownload access for people who already own the release. If you are buying now, only a current checkout or an explicitly active offer answers the purchase question.
Use availability databases without mistaking history for inventory
Community references can help you discover former platforms, regional editions, DRM details and known delistings. PCGamingWiki’s availability guidance separates the source, DRM, notes and supported operating-system fields, and defines an unavailable listing as a title that appears at a source but is no longer purchasable there. Those fields are useful for organizing checks, but they do not replace a live store visit.
How to read a database entry
- Match the database title to your recorded edition and platform.
- Read the source field to identify which store or distributor the entry concerns.
- Read the availability or notes field for a statement that the offer ended.
- Check the DRM and operating-system fields for requirements that could prevent installation or play.
- Use the cited store name as a search lead, then confirm the result on that store’s current page.
Do not treat a page that merely contains screenshots, a description or a historical price as evidence of a current sale. Availability and compatibility change, so note when you performed the check.
Verify that the release will run on your device
Buying and playing are separate questions. A legal copy can still fail because the operating system, graphics driver, processor architecture, console generation or required service is incompatible.
Read the exact store requirements
Open the system-requirements or platform-compatibility section for the specific release. Capture the supported operating systems, processor and memory requirements, graphics API or card requirements, storage, display assumptions and any required launcher or internet connection. For consoles, confirm the supported generation and whether the title is native, backward-compatible or available only through a subscription or streaming service.
Do not infer compatibility from age or genre. Two RPGs released in the same year can use different engines and copy-protection systems, and a modern storefront can distribute a specially maintained build rather than the original executable.

Check a title-specific compatibility reference
After reading the store page, consult a game-specific compatibility reference and current support notes. Look for known fixes, required launch options, controller limitations, missing video codecs, resolution problems and multiplayer-service changes. Apply only instructions that match your edition and operating system; a workaround for a remaster may damage an original release.
Understand the limits of preservation programs
GOG’s Preservation Program says it tests selected classic games and maintains them for modern systems. Its FAQ also cautions that operating-system and graphics-driver changes can still affect compatibility. The program currently describes its scope as Windows-only; that scope does not automatically describe every game sold by the store. Treat a preservation designation as useful evidence of maintenance, not a lifetime guarantee for every future Windows update or graphics driver.
Check ownership, DRM and service dependencies
Two editions can contain the same story while offering very different access conditions. Before purchasing, write down how the copy is delivered and what must remain available after checkout.

Never assume that owning a physical disc removes all dependencies. Some releases require an activation code, an online patch, a platform account or servers that are no longer operating.
Evaluate physical and second-hand copies
If digital options fail, investigate boxed releases and legitimate second-hand supply for the exact platform and region. A used listing proves only that someone is offering a physical copy; it does not prove that your hardware can read it or that the title remains playable.
Confirm the medium and hardware path
- Match disc, cartridge or optical format to the console or computer drive you actually own.
- Check whether the target console supports that generation natively or through documented backward compatibility.
- For PC discs, verify the operating system, installer method, activation requirement and availability of essential patches.
- Confirm region coding, language, ratings and whether the box contains all discs or a required key.
- Ask whether the copy has been used, damaged, scratched or separated from its activation code.
Check online dependencies before paying
A physical copy may still require a one-time activation, downloadable content, account linking or an online service. If the seller cannot identify those requirements, treat the purchase as uncertain. For a console title, also confirm that the platform’s current firmware accepts the release and that any necessary update remains obtainable.

Compare the options you found
When several routes survive your checks, compare them against the same criteria rather than choosing the first result.

Choose the route that satisfies your priorities: exact original content, easiest modern installation, offline ownership, language support or access to expansions. A lower price does not compensate for an incompatible platform or missing activation code.
A repeatable checking workflow
- Write the target specification. Record title, edition, platform, region, language and expansions.
- Open the publisher or developer page. Note whether it points to a current purchase route, a replacement edition or an unavailable release.
- Search the official platform store. Confirm an active offer, exact content and region availability.
- Check other authorized stores. Record each result separately; do not merge editions with similar names.
- Interpret delisting language. Distinguish a store-specific removal from the disappearance of every legitimate route.
- Read requirements. Capture operating systems, hardware, storage, launcher, DRM and online requirements.
- Cross-check compatibility. Consult a title-specific reference and current support notes for your exact release.
- Investigate physical supply if needed. Verify medium, region, hardware support, condition, activation and service dependencies.
- Compare ownership risks. Decide whether you need an offline installer, a physical medium, a particular language or the original features.
- Re-check immediately before purchase or publication. Store listings, prices, operating-system support and service status can change.
Troubleshoot common dead ends
The search result exists, but checkout is missing
Open the page in the correct region and platform account, then look for an explicit unavailable or delisted notice. Search the exact title for a replacement edition and check another authorized store. Do not rely on a cached snippet or a historical database entry.
The store sells it, but your operating system is not listed
Stop before buying. Look for an officially supported build or a documented title-specific compatibility path. If only community workarounds exist, treat success as uncertain and check whether the workaround affects saves, controllers, graphics or online features.
A used disc is available, but the new console is not listed
Verify backward compatibility for that exact release and region. A disc’s physical presence does not establish that the newer console can read or license it.

The edition is available, but an expansion is missing
Compare the content list with your target specification. Search for a complete edition or separately sold expansion, and confirm that the add-on uses the same region and platform as the base game.
The game worked previously but now fails to launch
Check current operating-system and graphics-driver notes, launcher status, required patches and account authentication. Preservation programs can improve compatibility, but OS and driver changes can still introduce failures.
When to conclude that it is not currently obtainable
You can reasonably describe an exact release as unavailable when its official store page says it is no longer offered, no authorized store provides an active purchase route in your region, and any remaining references are historical or unavailable listings. State the scope carefully: “the Windows original is not currently sold in this region” is more accurate than “the RPG no longer exists.”
If a legitimate physical copy remains in circulation, describe that separately and include the platform, region and compatibility uncertainties. Re-check close to the date of purchase because catalogues and technical support change.
