What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes, you can check it safely without installing anything. Record the computer’s exact CPU architecture, RAM, free storage, graphics, display resolution and network hardware; compare those figures with the requirements for one currently supported distribution release; then boot that release from a USB drive and test the hardware and the applications you actually use. A computer’s age alone cannot establish compatibility, and a distribution’s minimum specification is not a promise of smooth performance.
What “can run Linux” should mean
There are three different questions hidden in “Can my old PC run Linux?”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Will it boot? The processor must support the distribution’s architecture, and the firmware must be able to start the installation or live media.
- Will the hardware work? The display, graphics adapter, keyboard, pointing device, storage controller, sound and network adapter all need usable support.
- Will it do your work acceptably? Web browsing, video calls, office documents and other modern tasks can need considerably more memory and graphics capacity than the published minimum.
A minimum requirement answers only the first part of the performance question. It is a gate, not a benchmark. Two computers that both meet a minimum can feel very different because of their graphics hardware, storage speed, browser workload, background services and the number of applications open at once.

CPU model and architecture
Record the processor model and whether the system is 64-bit capable. Xubuntu’s current requirements specify a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor. A processor’s clock speed by itself is not enough to predict usability: generation, core count, instruction support and thermal throttling also matter.
Installed RAM
Record the total physical memory, not merely the amount currently free. Integrated graphics may reserve part of that RAM, and the operating system, browser and applications share what remains.
Storage and free space
Record the drive type if you know it (hard disk or solid-state drive), its total capacity and the free space on the partition where Linux would be installed. Requirements are stated in free disk space, so a nearly full drive can fail an installation even when its total capacity looks adequate.

Record the graphics adapter model and the panel’s native resolution. Also note whether the computer has an external monitor, docking hardware or unusual video outputs. A live session can reveal whether the image is stable and whether the available resolution is practical.
Wi-Fi, Ethernet and other devices
Record the Wi-Fi chipset if available, whether Ethernet works, and any device you cannot do without, such as a fingerprint reader, webcam, Bluetooth adapter or specialty printer. The exact model is more useful than a generic label such as “wireless card.”

Where to find the information in Windows
- Open Settings > System > About and note the processor, installed RAM and system type.
- Open Task Manager > Performance to inspect CPU, memory, disks, Wi-Fi and graphics while the computer is idle and while a typical workload is running.
- Press
Win+R, entermsinfo32, and press Enter. System Information provides a more complete inventory, including firmware details that can matter when booting removable media. - Use the graphics control panel or Device Manager to copy the exact adapter name. Do not rely on “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” as if it were the real GPU model; it may indicate that Windows is using a fallback driver.
These paths are practical starting points, not a result for every Windows edition. Menus can differ by version, so confirm uncertain details in the manufacturer’s documentation.
Where to find the information in an existing Linux installation
Open a terminal and run:
lscpu
free -h
lsblk
lscpu reports processor and architecture information, free -h reports memory in a readable format, and lsblk lists storage devices and partitions. Use your desktop’s settings panel or hardware tools to identify the graphics and network adapters. Save the output or copy the key lines into your notes.
2. Compare the machine with one current release
Requirements vary by distribution and release. Choose a specific, currently supported release first, then compare its official figures with your inventory. Do not combine the lowest numbers from several projects into a fictional “universal Linux requirement.”
| Distribution information | Published minimum | Published recommendation or additional requirement | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xubuntu current download page (Xubuntu Project, accessed 2026) | 64-bit Intel or AMD processor; 1 GB RAM; 8.6 GB free disk space | 1.5 GHz dual-core processor; 2 GB RAM; 20 GB free space | The recommendation is intended to provide smoother multitasking and room for applications and data. Xubuntu also says you can try it from a USB or DVD before installing. |
| Linux Mint FAQ (Linux Mint Project, accessed 2026) | 2 GB RAM; 20 GB disk space | 4 GB RAM; 100 GB disk space; 1024×768 display resolution is listed | The FAQ presents separate minimum and recommended memory and storage figures. Linux Mint LTS releases receive five years of support. |
The Xubuntu values are lower than the Linux Mint FAQ figures, but that comparison does not prove that Xubuntu will run better on your particular computer. Desktop environment, driver support, applications, storage speed and the condition of the hardware still decide the result. Documentation for the Xfce desktop includes representative figures from an historical Ubuntu 19.10/Xfce 4.14pre3 test; those figures are not a current, cross-distribution compatibility guarantee.
3. Interpret the numbers for your workload
If the PC is below a published minimum
Treat it as a warning that the chosen release may not install or may be impractical. Identify the exact shortfall instead of guessing. A 1 GB machine, for example, is below Linux Mint’s listed minimum of 2 GB RAM, while a drive with only 6 GB free is below Xubuntu’s 8.6 GB minimum. Do not assume that a smaller installer or an old release is a safe answer: old release pages can contain obsolete architecture and support information.

If the PC meets the minimum but not the recommendation
It may boot and perform basic tasks, but leave less room for browser tabs, updates and multitasking. Test your real workload in the live session rather than treating the specification as a performance score. A machine that is adequate for text editing may struggle with several video streams or a video meeting alongside a browser.
If it meets the recommendation
You have a stronger starting point, not a guarantee. Check graphics and network support and run the live test anyway. Storage health, overheating, failing batteries and noisy hard disks can make an otherwise suitable specification unpleasant to use.
4. Check graphics and device support for the exact model
Linux Mint states that proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers are not installed by default. That does not mean every ATI or Nvidia adapter fails; it means you should test the default driver and check the project’s current driver guidance for the exact GPU. A machine may display a desktop while still having poor acceleration, incorrect resolution, unreliable suspend or unusable external-monitor output.
Look up the full computer model and the full adapter names, not just the manufacturer. Record whether the live session:
- selects the panel’s native resolution and keeps the image stable;
- renders windows without severe tearing, flicker or corrupted graphics;
- drives an external monitor at the resolution you need;
- recovers from closing and reopening the lid on a laptop, if that matters to you; and
- allows the applications you need to use hardware acceleration acceptably.
When a device is essential, search the distribution’s current documentation and hardware forums using the exact model or chipset. Do not infer support from a similar-looking computer.

5. Try Linux from a USB drive before installing
A live environment is the safest practical compatibility check because it runs the distribution without replacing the existing system. Xubuntu explicitly supports trying it from a USB or DVD first. The live system runs slower than an installed system, so use it to detect hardware and workflow problems, not to predict exact installed-system speed.
Create the boot media
- Choose the exact supported release and download its ISO from the project’s official site. Keep the release name and architecture with your notes.
- Use a generic USB flash drive and an image-writing utility appropriate for your current operating system to write the ISO to the drive. Writing the image normally erases that USB drive, so move any files from it first.
- Shut down the old PC, insert the USB drive, and open its one-time boot menu or firmware boot settings. The key varies by manufacturer; consult the computer’s manual if the menu does not appear.
- Select the USB device and choose the live or “try” option rather than starting an installation. If the computer skips the drive, check the boot order, the selected firmware mode and whether the image was written successfully.
Firmware and boot mode differ by model. Do not change a security or boot setting blindly; record the original setting so you can restore it if necessary.
Run a deliberate live-session checklist
- Display: Open display settings, select a usable resolution and test an external monitor if you depend on one.
- Input: Type in a document, use every important key, move the pointer, click, scroll and test the touchpad’s buttons and gestures.
- Network: Connect to Wi-Fi, browse several pages, disconnect and reconnect, and test Ethernet if that is your normal connection.
- Sound and camera: Play an audio file, adjust volume, test headphones and make a camera preview if video calls matter.
- Storage and ports: Plug in the external drives, cards, printers or other peripherals you use. Confirm that files can be read and, where appropriate, written.
- Sleep and heat: Leave the computer running long enough to notice excessive fan noise, abnormal heat or crashes. Try suspend and resume on a laptop if it is an important feature.
- Your applications: Open the browser tabs, documents, media and other workloads you expect to use. Watch for freezes, missing fonts, unusable controls or video that drops frames.
Write down each failure with the exact device and symptom. “Wi-Fi does not work” is less useful than “the [model] Wi-Fi adapter is visible but cannot connect to my network after entering the password.”
6. Make the installation decision
| Result | Decision | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Below the selected release’s minimum | Do not install that release yet. | Confirm the specification and investigate whether the exact bottleneck can be addressed. Do not assume an upgrade is possible without the model’s service manual. |
| Meets minimum, live session has hardware failures | Compatibility is not established. | Check the exact model and chipset in current project documentation, then retest a supported release or choose another documented option. |
| Meets minimum, live session works, workload is acceptable | Installation is reasonable after a backup. | Back up personal files, verify that you can reinstall or recover the original system, and follow the installer’s partitioning prompts carefully. |
| Meets recommendation and live test is stable | Best evidence available without installing. | Still keep a backup and record the working release and any driver settings so you can reproduce the setup. |
Before changing partitions or installing, copy personal files to storage that is disconnected or otherwise protected from an installation mistake. This is general installation safety advice; the exact backup and recovery procedure depends on your current operating system and computer.
7. Troubleshoot the common failure points
The USB does not boot
- Rewrite the image; an interrupted or incorrectly written image can look like a firmware problem.
- Try another USB port and confirm that the computer’s boot menu lists the drive.
- Check the model manual for the one-time boot key and the firmware mode it expects.
- If the machine shows an architecture or image error, recheck that you downloaded the correct 64-bit image for the selected release.
The desktop appears but the screen is unusable
- Open display settings and try the panel’s native resolution and a lower safe resolution.
- Test an external monitor separately; a failure on one output can identify a graphics or connector-specific issue.
- Look up the exact GPU and the distribution’s current driver instructions. Linux Mint’s default installation does not include proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers.
Wi-Fi, sound or a peripheral is missing
- Identify the exact chipset in the live session or the computer’s existing operating system.
- Test Ethernet temporarily if available, but do not treat that as proof that the Wi-Fi adapter is supported.
- Search current documentation for the model and release before installing. A workaround for a different chipset may not apply.
The live session is painfully slow
Some slowdown is expected because the system is reading from removable media. If the desktop remains unusable after the hardware checks, do not promise yourself that installation will transform it into a fast computer. Compare the behavior with the release’s published requirements, check for failing hardware and test the exact workload again only after resolving the obvious bottleneck.

8. Choosing between the two documented options
When Xubuntu is the closer numerical fit
Xubuntu’s published minimum of 1 GB RAM and 8.6 GB free space is lower than Linux Mint’s FAQ figures. Its recommendation of a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM and 20 GB free space gives a more useful target for ordinary multitasking. Choose it for testing when those are the current requirements that match your hardware and when its desktop experience suits you.
When Linux Mint’s figures fit your machine
Linux Mint lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space as minimums, recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk space, and lists 1024×768 display resolution. Its LTS releases receive five years of support. Test the exact edition and release you intend to install, especially if graphics drivers or a low-resolution panel are concerns.
Neither project’s numbers can decide the question without your model and workload. Use the live test as the tie-breaker, and prefer a currently supported release over an old “lightweight” download whose architecture or support guidance is no longer current.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute9. Mistakes that produce misleading answers
- Using the PC’s age as the test: Two computers from the same year can have different processors, RAM limits and Wi-Fi chipsets.
- Comparing total disk capacity with a free-space requirement: The installer needs available space where it will create the system.
- Calling a minimum a recommended target: Leave room for updates, browser tabs and your actual applications.
- Testing only the desktop: A successful boot does not prove that Wi-Fi, sound, sleep, graphics acceleration or a printer works.
- Judging performance from the live USB alone: Removable media is slower than an installed system, while a failed live test can still expose a real compatibility problem.
- Installing before backing up: Partitioning and boot changes can make existing files inaccessible if something goes wrong.
- Assuming an upgrade is possible: RAM may be soldered, a drive may use a proprietary connector, or the firmware may impose limits. Check the exact service manual first.
10. A compact worksheet
Fill this out before you download an image:
- Computer model and manufacturer:
- CPU model and 64-bit capability:
- Total installed RAM:
- Drive type, total capacity and free space:
- Graphics adapter and native display resolution:
- Wi-Fi chipset and Ethernet availability:
- Essential peripherals:
- Applications and workload to test:
- Chosen distribution, edition and supported release:
- Minimum and recommended requirements copied from that project’s official page:
- Live-session results for display, input, network, sound, peripherals and workload:
If every essential device works in the live session, the machine meets the chosen release’s requirements and your workload is acceptable, you have a defensible basis for installation. If one of those conditions fails, investigate that specific failure rather than relying on the label “lightweight.”
