Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not pay or share sensitive information with an NFT recovery service that contacts you unexpectedly until you have verified it independently. Guaranteed results, requests for an upfront or escalating fee, and claims of law-enforcement authority are serious warning signs. A tracing report is not proof that a service can freeze or return an NFT or cryptocurrency.
Why recovery offers deserve extra scrutiny
People who have already lost crypto or an NFT can be targeted again by recovery fraud. The FBI warns that scammers may pose as law enforcement, private companies, or law firms, and use direct messages, social media, search ads, or false reviews to find victims. An unsolicited approach does not by itself prove that a particular business is fraudulent, but it is a reason to stop and verify before engaging.

Be especially wary if someone guarantees recovery, says they are acting for the FBI or another agency, asks for passwords or wallet credentials, or wants money to unlock, trace, or release assets. The FTC warns consumers not to pay unsolicited recovery offers or provide financial information to the person making the pitch. FTC recovery-scam guidance and its warning about payment demands explain these risks.

How to check a service before you respond
- Pause the conversation. Do not send money or provide a seed phrase, password, exchange login, identity document, banking details, or other sensitive information in response to an unsolicited offer. Do not use contact details or links supplied by the person pitching the service.
- Look up the business and representative independently. Search their exact names with terms such as “complaint,” “scam,” or “review,” as the FTC recommends. Check the organization’s official website and relevant agency directories, and use contact information you find there—not a number or link in the pitch. FTC guidance
- Verify claims of government affiliation. If the person says they work with the FBI, contact a local FBI field office using contact details found independently on the FBI’s official site. The FBI says law enforcement does not charge victims a fee to investigate crimes. FBI recovery-fraud guidance
- Ask what the service will actually do. Request a written description of each step, who performs it, what authority would allow an account or asset to be frozen or returned, all possible fees, and what happens if tracing finds an address but no funds can be frozen. Treat vague answers, pressure to act immediately, or new charges that appear as the process continues as reasons to walk away.
- Separate tracing from recovery. A tracing report may identify transaction paths or wallet addresses; it does not itself recover assets or authorize a freeze. In an August 11, 2023 public service announcement, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center said: “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” Exchanges may freeze accounts under their own processes or in response to legal process, but that is not a power held by a private tracing firm. FBI IC3 announcement
- Do not rely on success stories alone. Testimonials, screenshots, impressive-looking reports, and claims that a firm has “inside connections” are not independent proof of its identity, authority, or ability to return your specific asset. Verify the organization and its claims through official channels.
What recovery can—and cannot—mean
“Recovery” can refer to different outcomes: tracing transactions, seeking a freeze through an exchange or legal process, pursuing a civil claim, or actually receiving a cryptocurrency payment or NFT back. Ask a provider to state which outcome it is offering and what action it can lawfully take. Do not interpret identification of a wallet or a report as evidence that an NFT or funds have been returned.

The FBI identifies civil litigation as an option a victim may choose, but litigation is not a guarantee that an NFT or cryptocurrency will be returned. If you are considering legal action, seek advice from a lawyer qualified in the jurisdiction relevant to your case. Check the lawyer’s identity and credentials independently, and clarify the scope of representation and fees before agreeing to work. The cited U.S. agency guidance does not settle every NFT custody, blockchain, smart-contract, exchange, or international-jurisdiction question.
Preserve evidence and report the incident
Keep the original recovery pitch and records from the underlying loss. Do not delete messages, emails, receipts, reports, or contracts, even if the person stops responding.

For suspected crypto investment fraud, the FBI directs victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or a local FBI field office; its guidance asks victims to provide transaction information. For consumer fraud, report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These reporting routes document suspected wrongdoing; neither is a promise that an agency will retrieve an NFT or funds.
Keep the loss figures in perspective
The FBI IC3 reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses for 2022 in its 2023 public service announcement. That figure concerns reported cryptocurrency investment fraud—not NFT recovery-fraud losses specifically—and should not be read as a measure of how much NFT recovery services have taken.
