Use several checks together before paying: match the listing to Wizards of the Coast’s five official Foundations Commander deck identities and contents, verify the seller and condition, inspect every seal and package seam, photograph the bottom production code, and compare the complete contents with the correct official decklist if the box is opened. No single price, code, visual detail, or marketplace listing proves authenticity.
Know exactly what the genuine product is
Wizards of the Coast announced the Foundations Commander line on September 18, 2026. The announced release date was October 2, 2026, so listings should now identify an already released product rather than a vague future preorder. Wizards names five decks:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Official deck name | What the listing should identify |
|---|---|
| Calling All Angels | The named deck and its matching commander and artwork |
| Keen Engineering | The named deck and its matching commander and artwork |
| Wretched Ranks | The named deck and its matching commander and artwork |
| Reign of Dragons | The named deck and its matching commander and artwork |
| Tramplesaurus Rex | The named deck and its matching commander and artwork |
Each authentic deck is one ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck: one traditional foil borderless face commander plus 99 non-foil cards. The box also contains 10 non-foil double-sided tokens, one reference card, and one deck box. Wizards says the product is sold through local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other Magic retailers.
A listing titled only “Foundations Commander” does not establish which product is being sold. Ask for the exact deck name, clear photographs of the front and back, the language, and the condition. If the seller cannot identify one of the five names or will not show the actual box, treat that as a reason to pause rather than assume the item is genuine.

Run the pre-purchase checks in order
1. Match the identity, artwork, and edition
- Read the full listing title. It should use one of the five official names, not just “MTG Foundations,” “Commander deck,” or “100-card deck.”
- Compare the commander and artwork. Use Wizards’ announcement and its linked official decklists as the reference for the named deck, face commander, box art, card list, and token list. A seller’s stock image that does not show the actual product is not enough to verify condition.
- Check the edition and language. The language stated by the seller should match the cards and packaging you expect. A language mismatch can indicate a listing error, an exchanged item, or a repack rather than the advertised product.
- Ask whether the item is factory sealed. “Opened,” “deck only,” “repacked,” and “display box” are materially different offers. Get the answer in the marketplace message system so it remains part of your purchase record.
Do not infer authenticity from a familiar-looking commander image alone. Counterfeit packaging can copy artwork, while a legitimate seller can accidentally upload the wrong photograph. Identity is the first filter, not a final verdict.
2. Establish seller provenance
Wizards’ support guidance starts with a simple instruction: “First, be sure to purchase from a reputable dealer.” Look at the seller’s transaction history, written condition policy, return terms, and whether the seller is operating as an established game retailer or an individual account. Wizards says North American online stores displaying its Authorized Internet Retailer logo have been approved to sell sealed products online.
- Read the marketplace condition field instead of relying on the headline.
- Check whether the seller accepts returns for an item that arrives opened, repacked, or materially different from the photographs.
- Confirm who is responsible for fulfillment and customer service when a marketplace hosts several sellers under one product page.
- Save the seller name, listing URL, photographs, messages, invoice, and promised condition before paying.
A reputable channel lowers risk but does not make an individual listing automatically authentic. Inspect the specific seller and the specific box you will receive.

Wizards explains that MSRP is a suggested reference and that retailers may set their own prices. The cited Foundations announcement does not publish an MSRP for these Commander decks. Consequently, an unusually low price may reflect a sale, an opened deck, missing accessories, or a fraudulent listing; an unusually high price may reflect scarcity or seller markup. Neither price proves that a box is real.

Ask what the quoted amount includes: shipping, taxes, a complete sealed deck, and the original accessories. Compare the delivered total for the same named deck and language across several sellers. A price difference becomes useful only when you understand the condition and buyer protection attached to each offer.
4. Inspect the box and seal before opening
Wizards advises buyers to look for sealed product and signs that packs have not been resealed. There is no Foundations-specific pass/fail seal test published by Wizards, so use the following as practical warning signs rather than laboratory proof:
| What you notice | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An unexplained second layer of shrink-wrap | It can indicate that the original package was opened and wrapped again. | Ask the seller for an explanation and original photos; do not open or accept it as factory sealed without a satisfactory answer. |
| Adhesive residue, cut seams, or a flap that appears reattached | These are consistent with tampering or repacking. | Photograph the area and use the platform’s return or cancellation process. |
| Blurry text, distorted logos, or mismatched artwork | Printing that does not match official product images can signal counterfeit packaging or a substituted box. | Compare every panel with Wizards’ product imagery before paying. |
| Box dimensions or inserts that do not match the official product | A different size or interior arrangement can indicate a different product or missing components. | Request measurements and interior photographs, or buy elsewhere. |
| Missing, altered, or unreadable labels and barcode area | Labels can be removed or replaced when products are repacked. | Ask for a sharp photograph and retain it with the listing record. |
Use a bright, even light and photograph every edge, seam, flap, shrink-wrap overlap, barcode area, and label. Take these photographs before opening. They document the condition that the seller shipped and preserve evidence if the package changes during inspection.
5. Record the bottom production code
Wizards describes the production code as a string of letters and numbers that helps identify specific information about a product. In Wizards’ Commander example, the code is printed on the bottom of the package and appears like 150 0CM 1.

- Photograph the entire bottom panel so the code is connected to the box.
- Take a close-up in which every letter, number, and space is legible.
- Keep the receipt or order invoice with the photograph.
The code is corroborating evidence, not a public authenticity certificate. Wizards does not provide a public code database that buyers can search, and it does not offer a card-verification service. A code that looks plausible cannot override a cut seam, wrong deck identity, or missing contents.
Compare your buying options on the same criteria
Wizards identifies local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other Magic retailers as places to obtain the product. Stock, seller, price, and return terms can change quickly, so compare the individual offer rather than assuming one channel is always safer.
| Criterion | Questions to ask before paying |
|---|---|
| Authorization and reputation | Is the seller an established retailer, and does a North American online store display Wizards’ Authorized Internet Retailer logo? |
| Sealed condition | Does the offer explicitly say factory sealed, or does it say opened, deck-only, repacked, or display? |
| Evidence available | Can you see clear photographs of the actual box, including seams, labels, and the bottom panel? |
| Returns and buyer protection | What is the deadline and process if the box arrives opened, incomplete, or different from the listing? |
| Total delivered cost | What will you pay after shipping and taxes, and what condition is included at that price? |
| Identity and language | Does the listing name Calling All Angels, Keen Engineering, Wretched Ranks, Reign of Dragons, or Tramplesaurus Rex and state the language? |
| Physical inspection | Can you examine the sealed box at a local store before purchase, or must you rely on marketplace photographs? |
When two offers are close in price, the one with clear seller accountability, explicit sealed condition, useful photographs, and workable returns is usually the easier purchase to defend if something goes wrong.
What to do when the package arrives
Make an unboxing record
Before opening, photograph the shipping carton, shipping label, product box, all sides, the bottom code, and any damage. A continuous unboxing video can supplement still photographs, but take separate high-resolution images as well so seams and text are readable. Do not discard the outer packaging, inserts, or label until you have completed the inventory.

Compare the received box with the listing you saved. Confirm the deck name, artwork, language, condition, and seller description. If the seller promised a factory-sealed product and you see a second wrap, cut seam, adhesive residue, or another listed warning sign, stop and contact the seller through the platform before opening.
Inventory an opened deck against the official list
If the external packaging appears consistent and you choose to open it, use the correct official decklist and token list from Wizards’ announcement. Work at a clean table and record each discrepancy.
- Identify the face commander. It should be the named commander for the deck shown in the listing and official product materials, and it should be the traditional foil borderless card described for the product.
- Count the main deck. Confirm that the Commander deck contains 100 cards total, including the face commander and the 99 non-foil cards specified for the product.
- Check every card against the decklist. Compare card name, language, set marking, finish, and quantity. Do not rely on a quick visual fan-out; use a written checklist so duplicate or missing cards are recorded.
- Count the tokens. Verify the 10 non-foil double-sided tokens and compare their identities with Wizards’ token list.
- Check the accessories. Confirm the reference card and deck box are present and correspond to the product.
- Photograph discrepancies in place. Capture the cards, token stack, empty packaging spaces, and all printed identifiers before rearranging anything.
A missing component or mismatched deck can result from a repack, a seller mistake, or a shipping swap. The discrepancy is important, but it does not by itself identify which cause occurred; preserve evidence before demanding a remedy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeparate counterfeit clues from ordinary listing mistakes
Authenticity decisions are stronger when several independent facts point in the same direction. For example, a correct deck name, intact seal, consistent artwork, legible production code, and complete decklist provide a coherent chain of evidence. Conversely, one wrong photograph may be a listing error, while a cut seam plus a wrong card list is a much stronger reason to reject the item.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Likely listing or fulfillment error: the box is intact and matches official imagery, but the seller sent the wrong named deck or language. Photograph the mismatch and request a return or replacement through the platform.
- Possible repack: the box has unexplained extra wrapping, adhesive residue, altered seams, or missing accessories. Do not treat a plausible production code as a clearance.
- Possible counterfeit packaging or cards: printing is blurry or distorted, the product identity does not match any of the five official decks, dimensions and inserts are wrong, or the opened contents fail the official decklist in several places.
- Shipping swap: the listing and seller messages describe one deck, but the sealed box is a different named deck. Keep the shipping label and all photographs while opening a marketplace case.
Do not try to authenticate a questionable card by comparing it with a single internet photograph. Wizards states that it has no card-verification service, so a visual opinion from an unofficial source cannot substitute for seller documentation and platform protection.
If something is wrong, stop and preserve your options
Before purchase
Wizards’ support guidance is explicit: “If you suspect the product is fraudulent, don’t buy it.” Cancel the transaction or choose another seller rather than relying on a promise that the box will be checked later. Ask the seller for missing photographs and a written condition statement; if the answers are evasive, walk away.
After delivery, before opening
- Photograph the box and shipping materials from every side.
- Save the listing URL, seller profile, messages, invoice, tracking information, and payment record.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace so the conversation is logged.
- Use the platform’s return or buyer-protection process if the item is opened, repacked, damaged, or materially different from the listing.
- Do not send the product back outside the platform’s instructions, and do not discard packaging while a claim is pending.
After opening or when counterfeit cards are suspected
Keep the cards, tokens, deck box, reference card, wrappers, and shipping materials together. Photograph the production code, seal damage, card fronts and backs, missing items, and the complete decklist comparison. Wizards says it does not replace counterfeit cards and has no card-verification service. For suspected fraud, it directs buyers to local law enforcement, the Internet Crime Complaint Center, or the Federal Trade Commission for online fraud. Those reports are more useful when they include the listing, seller information, payment record, photographs, and unboxing evidence.

A compact decision checklist
- Is the offer for one of the five official deck names?
- Do the commander, artwork, language, and condition match the listing and Wizards’ product materials?
- Is the seller reputable, and does the applicable North American store display Wizards’ Authorized Internet Retailer logo?
- Is the condition explicitly factory sealed rather than opened, repacked, or deck-only?
- Have you inspected and photographed every seam, flap, wrap overlap, label, barcode area, and bottom panel?
- Did you record the production code and retain the receipt?
- Does the total delivered price make sense for the stated condition, without treating price as proof?
- If opened, did you compare the commander, 100-card deck, 10 double-sided tokens, reference card, and deck box with the correct official lists?
- Do you have the listing, seller messages, invoice, tracking, photographs, and unboxing record if a dispute arises?
Only proceed when the identity, seller, packaging, code, and contents tell the same story. If one layer conflicts with the others, the safest decision is to pause or decline rather than gamble on a supposedly cheap sealed deck.
