Upload the image to Google’s SynthID Detector or to Gemini and ask whether it was created with Google AI. Google also lists Search and Chrome as places where SynthID checks may appear. A positive result means Google’s watermark was detected and that Google AI created or edited all or part of the image. A result saying no SynthID was found is narrower: it only means that this particular watermark was not detected, not that the picture is definitely human-made or authentic.

The standalone SynthID Detector was announced as globally available in English on October 7, 2026, for images, video and audio associated with SynthID from Google or named partners. Product labels, account requirements and regional access can change, so use the interface currently shown by Google.

What SynthID tells you

SynthID is an imperceptible watermark embedded in generated media. Unlike a visible badge in a corner or ordinary file metadata, the signal is placed in the media itself and is designed to be detected by SynthID technology.

For an image check, the practical question is not “Is this image AI?” in the broadest possible sense. It is “Does this image carry a SynthID watermark associated with Google AI or a participating partner?” That distinction determines how you should report the result.

  • Watermark detected: Google says Google AI created or edited all or part of the image.
  • Not detected: The check did not find a SynthID watermark. It does not prove that a person made the image, that it is original, or that no other AI system was involved.
  • Possibly detected or uncertain: Treat the finding as inconclusive rather than converting it into a definite positive.

Google DeepMind has described SynthID as intended to survive common changes such as filters, color and brightness adjustments, and lossy compression. It also explicitly says the watermark is not foolproof against extreme image manipulation.

Which official Google route should you use?

Route Best for What you do What is established
SynthID Detector A dedicated verification check, including media beyond still images Open the Detector, upload the file and read its SynthID finding Google announced global availability in English on October 7, 2026. It accepts images, video and audio for SynthID checks associated with Google or named partners.
Gemini Checking one image while asking a natural-language question Upload the image and ask: “Was this created with Google AI?” Google says Gemini can check for SynthID and provide contextual information. It can also verify compatible Content Credentials separately.
Google Search Checking content in a Search workflow when the feature is presented Use the SynthID-related verification control shown in Search Google lists Search as a surface that checks for SynthID. Exact controls can vary by product version.
Chrome Checking content from a browser workflow when the feature is presented Use the SynthID-related control shown in Chrome Google lists Chrome as a surface that checks for SynthID. Exact controls can vary by product version.

For a single image, start with the simplest official interface available to you. The routes should not be assumed to have identical file support, account rules or result wording unless Google’s current help page says they do.

The Detector is the clearest choice when you want a narrowly defined SynthID result. Gemini is convenient when you also need an explanation in ordinary language or want to ask about Content Credentials. Search and Chrome can be useful when the image is already encountered in those products, but their controls may be integrated into a broader workflow rather than presented as a standalone upload page.

Prepare the image before checking

Use the highest-quality copy you can obtain. Keep the original download, attachment or export in a separate folder and make a working copy if you need to crop or annotate it. Messaging services and social networks may re-encode images, so a copy downloaded from a platform is not necessarily identical to the file first created or shared.

Do not add a screenshot when the original file is available. A screenshot captures the displayed pixels and can discard information present in the source. If a screenshot is all you have, it is still reasonable to run a check, but record that limitation and avoid implying that the result applies to an unavailable original.

Likewise, do not treat a filename, EXIF field or visible watermark as a SynthID result. Those are different forms of information. The relevant evidence is the response from an official Google surface that is checking for the embedded SynthID signal.

How to use the SynthID Detector

  1. Open the official SynthID Detector. Confirm that you are using Google’s current verification service rather than an unrelated image-analysis site.
  2. Select the image-upload option. Choose the original file when possible. A screenshot, re-export or heavily modified copy may not provide the same evidence as the file you received.
  3. Upload the image and wait for the result. Do not interpret a loading state or a generic image-analysis message as a SynthID finding.
  4. Record the exact result. Note whether the service says the watermark was detected, not detected or possibly detected. Interface wording may change.
  5. Report only what the result supports. A positive finding supports the statement that Google AI created or edited all or part of the image. A negative finding supports only the statement that SynthID was not detected.

The Detector’s October 2026 announcement covers images, video and audio, but the media type you can submit and the controls you see should be checked in the current interface. The announcement says the service can check SynthID associated with Google or named partners; it does not establish that every AI provider’s watermark is recognized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the service displays a confidence or qualification, preserve it exactly. “Possibly detected” is materially different from “detected,” and a generic statement that a file was analyzed is not itself evidence of a match.

How to check an image in Gemini

  1. Open Gemini and attach the image. Use the image you want assessed, not a description of it.
  2. Ask the documented question: Was this created with Google AI?
  3. Read the answer for the evidence layer. Gemini may explain a SynthID finding and may add contextual reasoning. Keep those separate: visual impressions or textual reasoning are not the same as detecting a watermark.
  4. Ask a follow-up only to clarify the result. For example, ask whether the answer refers to a SynthID watermark or to visual analysis. Do not treat a confident-sounding explanation as a substitute for the stated watermark result.
  5. Save the wording if the result matters. Product responses can change, and an uncertain response should remain classified as uncertain.

Google’s Gemini help documentation says a positive result can mean that all or part of an image or video was created or edited by Google’s AI models. That includes an AI edit to an otherwise human-created picture; it does not require the entire image to have been generated from a prompt.

Gemini’s conversational format can make a result sound more certain than the underlying evidence. If the answer discusses lighting, hands, text, shadows or visual style, those comments are model reasoning about appearance. Ask specifically whether SynthID was detected, and quote that technical finding separately from any visual opinion.

What Search and Chrome checks mean

Google lists Search and Chrome among surfaces that can check whether content carries a SynthID watermark. The exact button, menu name and placement can vary by release, so follow the control currently displayed in the product rather than an old screenshot or a remembered instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a Search or Chrome result is shown, apply the same interpretation rules as for the Detector and Gemini. A SynthID match is evidence about Google’s watermark, not a universal judgment about whether the image is “real.” If no match is reported, phrase the result as “SynthID not detected.”

These built-in surfaces may be most useful when you encounter an image during ordinary browsing. They are not a reason to assume that every image on every page can be checked, nor that their controls have the same upload or account behavior as the standalone Detector. If a control is missing, use another official route rather than guessing at a hidden feature.

How to interpret every possible result

Watermark detected

A detected SynthID signal means Google’s system found the watermark associated with Google AI or a named participating partner. For an image, Google’s help wording allows for the possibility that only part of the image was created or edited by Google AI. The finding therefore supports “Google AI was involved,” not necessarily “the entire image was generated by Google AI.”

Not detected

“Not detected” is a limited technical result. It means the checker did not find SynthID in the submitted file. It does not establish that a human made the image, that the image is unedited, or that another company’s AI was not used. An image may never have carried SynthID, may carry a different provenance signal, or may have undergone changes that make detection harder.

Possibly detected

Google DeepMind’s earlier explanation included a “possibly detected” state. Treat that as unresolved. Preserve the uncertainty in any caption, moderation note or editorial record instead of upgrading it to a confirmed watermark match.

A contextual Gemini explanation

Gemini can combine a watermark check with its own reasoning about the image. Those are different evidence types. A description such as “this looks computer-generated” is not equivalent to a SynthID detection, and a SynthID result should not be inferred merely from Gemini’s visual comments.

No response or an unavailable check

An error, unavailable feature or unsupported file is not the same as “not detected.” Record that the check could not be completed and try an official route that currently supports the media you have. Do not turn a technical failure into a conclusion about authorship.

Why a watermark can survive some edits but still fail

SynthID is embedded in image pixels and is designed to remain detectable after ordinary changes, including common filters, color or brightness adjustments and lossy compression. That design goal helps when an image has been resized, recompressed or lightly edited in normal use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a guarantee for every transformed file. Google DeepMind’s 2023 technical explanation states: “SynthID isn’t foolproof against extreme image manipulations.” Severe transformations can therefore produce a negative or uncertain check even when the original file contained a watermark. Do not turn the resilience claim into an absolute promise that every crop, resize or compression cycle will remain detectable.

If two copies produce different outcomes, compare their histories. A detector result applies to the submitted file, not automatically to every earlier version. Preserve both files, note the transformations you know about and avoid selecting whichever result best fits a preferred story.

SynthID and Content Credentials are different checks

Content Credentials, commonly associated with the C2PA standard, describe a media history and provenance record. SynthID is a watermark signal. They can complement one another, but neither is a universal replacement for the other.

Gemini can verify compatible Content Credentials separately from its SynthID check. A file can therefore have credential information without a SynthID match, a SynthID match without the particular credential record Gemini can verify, or neither. When documenting an image, name which layer you checked:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • SynthID result: whether Google’s watermark was detected.
  • Content Credentials result: whether compatible provenance information could be verified.
  • Visual assessment: observations made by a person or an AI model, which are not proof of either technical signal.

Do not describe Content Credentials as a visible watermark, and do not describe SynthID as a complete edit history. They answer different questions: one concerns an embedded detection signal, while the other concerns compatible provenance information.

A careful workflow for journalists, moderators and researchers

  1. Preserve the source file. Keep the received image unchanged before opening it in an editor or messaging app that may re-encode it.
  2. Use an official Google route. Choose the Detector, Gemini, or a currently presented Search or Chrome control.
  3. Run the check on the best available copy. If you only have a screenshot or social-media download, label that limitation in your notes.
  4. Capture the result and date. Record the product used, the wording shown and the date of the check because interfaces and availability can change.
  5. Separate findings. Record SynthID, Content Credentials and visual observations as separate fields rather than one overall “AI” label.
  6. Use cautious language in publication. Say “Google’s checker detected SynthID” or “SynthID was not detected,” not “the image is definitely AI” or “the image is definitely authentic.”

For a high-stakes claim, retain the image hash or other internal file identifier used by your organization, alongside the untouched file and a screenshot of the result. This makes it clear which copy was tested if a platform later replaces or recompresses the image. It does not create extra certainty; it simply makes the provenance of your check auditable.

Run the same file through a second official Google route only as a consistency check, not as a vote. Different products may expose different wording or context, and a repeated negative still does not prove that no AI was involved.

Common situations and the correct conclusion

An image is entirely generated in a Google image tool

If the checker reports SynthID detected, you can say Google AI involvement was detected. You still do not need to claim that every pixel was generated in one operation; the official interpretation covers creation or editing of all or part of the image.

A photographer edits a real photo with a Google AI feature

A positive result can still be correct. SynthID is about Google AI creation or editing, not about whether the underlying scene originally existed or whether a camera was used.

A social platform recompresses the file

Run the check, but describe the copy you tested. SynthID is designed to withstand some lossy compression, yet Google does not guarantee detection after every transformation.

The result is negative and another detector says “AI”

Those are different claims. The Google result says only that SynthID was not detected; it does not settle whether another AI system or another provenance method was involved. Do not present the two outputs as contradictory measurements of one universal scale.

The result is uncertain

Keep it uncertain, obtain the original file if possible, and avoid making a definitive attribution from that response alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A visible Google logo appears in the picture

A logo, label or disclosure placed in the image is not the same as an imperceptible SynthID finding. Check the file with an official route and report the technical result separately from anything visible to the eye.

The image has metadata saying it was edited

Metadata may provide useful context, but it is not a substitute for SynthID. Metadata can be absent, changed or stripped during export, while SynthID is designed to reside in the pixels. Record both observations without treating either one as a universal authenticity verdict.

What Google’s current scale indicates

Google reported in its October 7, 2026 announcement that more than 180 billion images and videos had been watermarked and that 240,000 years of audio content had been watermarked. The same announcement reported more than 1 million verification requests per day across built-in Search, Gemini and Chrome features. These are figures reported by Google for 2026, not independently audited accuracy or usage measurements.

Those totals describe the scale of Google’s watermarking and verification activity. They do not provide a false-positive rate, false-negative rate or guarantee that a particular image will be recognized. Google’s November 2025 post had reported more than 20 billion pieces of AI-generated content watermarked; the later 2026 figures are the more current totals for an overview.

Limitations you should state plainly

  • No numerical accuracy rate is established in the official material described here.
  • Google does not establish that every edited image will remain detectable.
  • A negative result is not proof of human authorship or authenticity.
  • Exact country availability, account requirements, upload limits and uptime guarantees are not established here and may change.
  • Search, Chrome, Gemini and the standalone Detector may expose different controls or support different media types.
  • A positive finding indicates Google AI creation or editing of all or part of the file; it does not identify the exact model, prompt, date or person who made the edit.
  • A SynthID check does not determine whether an image depicts a real event, whether its caption is true or whether the person who shared it had permission to use it.

These limits are why a SynthID check is best treated as one provenance signal in an evidence trail, not as a universal AI detector. Use it to answer the narrow watermark question, then seek independent evidence for identity, context and authenticity.

Quick checklist

  • Use the original image when available.
  • Choose an official Google verification surface.
  • In Gemini, attach the image and ask Was this created with Google AI?
  • Write down the exact state: detected, not detected or possibly detected.
  • For a positive result, say Google AI created or edited all or part of the image.
  • For a negative result, say only that SynthID was not detected.
  • Keep Content Credentials and visual reasoning as separate evidence layers.
  • Do not claim certainty after extreme manipulation or an uncertain result.
  • Record which copy was tested, which product produced the result and the date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a positive SynthID result prove the entire image was generated by Google AI?

No. Google’s interpretation allows that Google AI created or edited all or only part of the image.

If SynthID is not detected, is the image definitely made by a person?

No. It means only that the checker did not find SynthID in the submitted file; other AI involvement or other provenance signals remain possible.

Can Gemini check Content Credentials as well as SynthID?

Yes. Google says Gemini can verify compatible Content Credentials separately, so record that result apart from the SynthID finding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask Gemini to check an image?

Attach the image and ask, “Was this created with Google AI?” Then distinguish Gemini’s stated SynthID finding from any visual explanation it adds.

Can a crop or compression remove SynthID?

SynthID is designed to withstand common changes such as filters, color and brightness adjustments and lossy compression, but Google DeepMind says it is not foolproof against extreme image manipulation. Treat results from heavily altered copies cautiously.

Is SynthID the same as a visible AI label or file metadata?

No. SynthID is an imperceptible signal embedded in the media. A visible label and ordinary metadata are separate forms of information.

Which Google products can check for SynthID?

Google lists the standalone SynthID Detector, Gemini, Search and Chrome. Exact controls, supported files and account conditions can vary by current product version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a negative SynthID result mean another AI detector is wrong?

No. A negative result means only that SynthID was not detected. Another service may be assessing a different watermark, metadata or visual pattern.

What does “possibly detected” mean?

It is an uncertain state described by Google DeepMind’s earlier explanation. Report it as inconclusive rather than as a confirmed watermark match.

Can SynthID tell me who made an image or whether its story is true?

No. It addresses whether the relevant watermark was detected. It does not identify a person, verify a caption or establish that the depicted event is authentic.

The Bottom Line

Use Google’s SynthID Detector or Gemini for a targeted watermark check. Report a positive as Google AI creation or editing of all or part of the image; report a negative only as “SynthID not detected.” Keep Content Credentials, metadata and visual judgments separate, and preserve uncertainty after heavy manipulation or an inconclusive result.
