How to check whether an image was generated or edited with Google’s AI-content detector

Use Gemini’s image-verification feature first. Upload the image in the Gemini app and ask whether it was generated or edited with Google AI. Gemini checks for Google’s SynthID watermark and for C2PA Content Credentials when those signals are available. You can also submit media to Google’s standalone SynthID Detector, which is focused on finding SynthID watermarks.

A positive SynthID result is evidence that all or part of the image was created or edited with Google AI models. A negative result is much narrower: it means the checked signal was not detected. It does not prove the image is authentic, and it does not rule out an image made with another AI system.

What Google’s detector actually checks

Google offers two related ways to investigate an image:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Route Signals checked Best use
Gemini app Google says its verification response can check SynthID and C2PA signals for supported uploads. The simplest general-purpose workflow when you already use Gemini.
SynthID Detector Uploaded media is checked for Google’s SynthID watermark. A dedicated watermark check when you want to focus specifically on SynthID.

SynthID and C2PA are not the same technology. SynthID is Google’s watermarking and identification system for AI-generated content. C2PA Content Credentials are provenance records that can describe how a file was created or edited. Gemini may report either signal, or both, so read the wording of the result instead of treating every positive response as one generic “AI detector” verdict.

Google DeepMind describes SynthID as “A tool to watermark and identify content generated through AI.” The system is designed to survive common transformations better than an ordinary visible logo, but the presence or absence of a signal still has to be interpreted within the scope of the check.

Before you start: choose the right file and record its context

The strongest check is performed on the original file you received, not on a screenshot or a copy downloaded from a social network. Keep the file unchanged in a safe location, and make a working copy if you need to resize or annotate it. Write down where you obtained it, the date and time you received it, and any claim made by the sender about how it was produced.

This preparation matters because a screenshot, crop, recompression or export through another application is a different artifact. If you later need to explain a result to an editor, moderator, investigator or court, you should be able to show exactly which bytes were uploaded and which version was not. You do not need special hardware or a physical accessory for either Google route; the checks are software services. However, current sign-in, account, regional and upload conditions can differ, so confirm the requirements displayed in your own interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 1: Check an image in the Gemini app

This is the most convenient route for most people. The exact buttons, supported file types, account requirements and regional availability can change, so use the labels shown in your current Gemini interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Step 1: Open Gemini

Open the Gemini app or the Gemini experience available in your region. Sign in if the current interface requires an account. Start a new conversation so the image and your question are evaluated together.

Step 2: Add the image

Use the app’s image or file-upload control and select the picture you want to examine. Wait for the thumbnail or filename to appear in the composer before sending the message. If the upload is rejected, the file may not be supported in that interface, may exceed a current limit, or may be unavailable under your account or regional settings. Google’s public help material does not establish one universal limit for every Gemini surface.

Step 3: Ask the verification question

Send a direct request such as: Was this image generated or edited with Google AI? Asking the question explicitly helps distinguish a provenance check from a general visual description. Gemini’s documented verification feature looks for SynthID and C2PA-related evidence and then provides context about what it found.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Step 4: Read the signal named in the response

Look for an explicit reference to SynthID, a C2PA Content Credential, or an indication that no supported signal was found. Do not reduce a nuanced response to “real” or “fake.” Record the exact signal and the scope described by Gemini, especially if the image may contain both a camera photograph and AI-edited regions.

Step 5: Preserve the original response

For a moderation, journalism or legal workflow, save the original file, the date of the check and Gemini’s wording. A later upload of a recompressed or resized copy can produce a different result, and the product interface may change over time. Keeping the response with the exact file makes your conclusion auditable.

Step 6: Ask a clarifying follow-up only when needed

If Gemini gives a broad answer, ask it to identify the signal rather than asking it to guess whether the picture “looks AI.” For example: Which signal did you find: SynthID, a C2PA Content Credential, both, or neither? Treat the follow-up as a request for the product’s documented check, not as an invitation to infer image authenticity from visual style. If no signal is identified, move to the dedicated detector and independent provenance checks.

Method 2: Use Google’s SynthID Detector

Google also provides a standalone SynthID Detector. It is a dedicated portal for submitting media and checking for a SynthID watermark, rather than a conversational answer that may discuss several aspects of an image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the current SynthID Detector page provided by Google.
  2. Choose the upload control and submit the image or other supported media.
  3. Wait for the detector to complete its watermark analysis.
  4. Read whether SynthID was detected and note any scope or media-type qualification.

This route is useful when you want a focused watermark result. It does not turn the absence of a watermark into an authenticity certificate. An image can lack SynthID because it was never made with a Google model, because it was made with a different AI system, or because the signal is not available to the detector after the file’s transformations. The currently supported formats, upload limits and access conditions should be confirmed in the live detector interface.

Use the same original file you used in Gemini if you are comparing the services. Do not compare a downloaded thumbnail in one service with a full-resolution original in the other. Note the portal’s response verbatim, including any statement that the media type or file was not supported. An upload failure is an operational result, not evidence that the picture is genuine or synthetic.

How to interpret a positive result

Google’s Gemini Apps Help states: “If a SynthID watermark is detected, it means all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google’s AI models.” The important qualifiers are all or part and created or edited.

  • It is evidence of Google-model involvement. A detected SynthID signal supports the conclusion that Google AI models created or edited at least some of the content covered by the watermark.
  • It does not measure the percentage of AI content. The result does not, by itself, tell you whether the whole image was generated, whether only the background was changed, or which object was edited.
  • It does not identify the person who made the file. A watermark is not a creator identity, ownership record or proof of when the image was produced.
  • It does not automatically describe every later edit. Cropping, retouching, format conversion or work in another application may change what can be detected. Keep the claim limited to what Google’s response actually says.
  • It is not an independent accuracy score. Google documents what a detected watermark means, but the product pages do not provide an accuracy guarantee for every image, workflow or transformation.

A careful report would say, “Google’s check detected SynthID, which indicates that all or part of the image was created or edited with Google AI models.” Avoid stronger wording such as “Google proved the entire image is AI-generated.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a negative or inconclusive result means

A response saying that SynthID was not detected should be reported narrowly: the checked image did not produce a detectable SynthID signal in that check. It is not proof that the image came from a camera or that no AI was involved.

There are several reasons a negative result cannot settle authenticity:

  • The image may have been generated or edited by a non-Google AI system.
  • The relevant Google signal may not be present in the particular file or workflow.
  • Subsequent editing, resizing, screenshots, recompression or format changes may affect detection.
  • The interface may have checked SynthID but not provided a C2PA record for that upload.
  • The detector may not support the file type or access context you used.

Use a negative result as one piece of provenance evidence, not as a declaration that the image is genuine. “No SynthID detected” and “authentic” are different statements. If the stakes are high, seek corroborating evidence such as the source account, an earlier version, camera records or a documented editing history.

SynthID versus C2PA Content Credentials

These mechanisms answer different questions.

Signal What it is How to describe a finding
SynthID Google’s watermarking and identification technology for AI-generated content. Google AI may have created or edited all or part of the image.
C2PA Content Credentials A provenance format that can carry information about content origin and edits. The file contains a credential reporting an origin or edit history; inspect the specific claims and issuer.

A C2PA record is not interchangeable with a SynthID watermark. A credential can describe provenance without being a watermark, while a watermark can remain associated with content even when ordinary metadata has been removed. Gemini’s verification response may mention both, so quote the signal type accurately in any report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a C2PA credential as a universal truth statement. Read who issued it, what action it records and which version of the file it covers. Likewise, do not assume that a file with no visible credential has no provenance information; the relevant record may not be present in the copy you received or may not be exposed by the interface used.

Gemini and SynthID Detector compared

Decision point Gemini app SynthID Detector
Primary purpose Conversational verification of a supported upload. Dedicated SynthID watermark analysis.
Signal coverage described by Google SynthID and C2PA checks may be included. SynthID watermark check.
Ease of use Upload the image and ask a natural-language question. Upload media to a purpose-built detector.
Best interpretation Read which signal Gemini reports; do not assume every answer is a watermark result. Treat a positive or negative response as a SynthID finding only.
Limits and availability Current file support, account rules and regional access vary by interface. Current supported media, limits and access conditions must be checked on the live portal.
When to use both When you want context about multiple signal types. When you want a second, focused SynthID check on the identical file.

Neither route should be described as a universal detector for every AI image. Their documented scope is Google-related signals. The practical advantage of running both is comparison of signal coverage, not obtaining a magical confidence percentage.

A careful workflow for important decisions

If an image could affect a news report, a platform moderation action, an academic submission or a dispute, use a repeatable process instead of relying on one conversational answer.

  1. Keep the original. Do not overwrite the source file with an edited, resized or screenshot copy.
  2. Record basic provenance. Note where you obtained the file, when you received it and whether someone supplied an editing history.
  3. Run Gemini’s check. Upload the original and ask whether it was generated or edited with Google AI.
  4. Run the standalone detector when appropriate. If the question specifically concerns Google watermarking, submit the same original file to SynthID Detector.
  5. Separate the findings. Record SynthID and C2PA results as different fields rather than combining them into one score.
  6. Seek corroboration. Compare the result with the source account, earlier versions, reverse-image evidence, camera records or other independent provenance information.
  7. Phrase the conclusion proportionally. Say “SynthID was detected,” “a C2PA credential was reported,” or “no checked signal was detected,” instead of claiming that the image is definitively real or fake.

For repeat work, use a simple log containing the file name, a checksum if your organization already records one, upload date, service used, exact prompt, returned wording and any file conversion. The goal is reproducibility: another reviewer should know which artifact and which signal your statement refers to.

Troubleshooting upload and result problems

The upload control is missing

Check that you are using a Gemini surface that supports image uploads and that you are signed in when required. Features can differ between the mobile app, web interface, account type and region. Update the app or try the currently supported Gemini interface, then confirm the help text shown for your account.

The file is rejected

Try the original image in a commonly supported format without changing its contents. If the service still rejects it, do not infer anything about authenticity from the failure. The official documentation does not establish one universal format and size policy across every interface, so consult the current upload guidance displayed by Google.

Gemini gives a general description instead of a verification result

Ask the question explicitly and include the image in the same message: Check this image for Google AI provenance. Did you find SynthID or a C2PA Content Credential? If the response still does not identify a signal, use the standalone SynthID Detector for a focused watermark check.

The two routes disagree

First check that both services received the identical original file. Then identify which signal each service reported. Gemini may discuss C2PA as well as SynthID, while the standalone detector is focused on SynthID. Different signal coverage or file handling can explain a difference; it is not a reason to declare one image authentic.

The result changes after editing

Preserve the first result and test the original again. A crop, screenshot, recompression or export through another application can alter the evidence available to a detector. Report which version was checked and avoid generalizing from a derivative copy to the original.

You need a result for video or another media type

Do not assume that an image workflow applies identically to every format. Google describes SynthID as covering AI-generated content, while the Gemini help wording refers to images and video; the detector’s current portal will state which media it accepts. Confirm the live interface before promising a particular format or limit.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Privacy and evidence handling

Uploading an image sends it through the service you choose. Before submitting sensitive material, review the current Google terms and privacy information that apply to your account and region. Remove unrelated documents or faces when your purpose allows, but do not alter the copy you retain as evidence. For confidential investigations, obtain the required organizational approval before uploading third-party content.

Keep access to the original and the returned response limited to people who need it. If you publish a finding, consider whether the image contains personal information unrelated to the provenance question. Privacy protection does not change the detector’s interpretation, but changing the file before testing can change the signal, so retain both the untouched source and any redacted working copy.

What Google’s usage figure does—and does not—show

Google said in an October 2026 announcement that its built-in verification features across Search, Gemini and Chrome receive more than 1 million verification requests daily. This is a company-reported usage figure, not an independent accuracy measurement. High usage does not establish that every result is correct or that the tools can identify content made by other AI systems.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gemini check if an image was made with Google AI?

Yes, for supported uploads Gemini provides a verification workflow that can look for SynthID and C2PA-related signals. Ask directly whether the image was generated or edited with Google AI, then identify which signal the response names.

What does “SynthID detected” mean?

It means Google’s watermark signal was detected. Google says that indicates all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google’s AI models. It does not establish that the entire file is AI-generated or identify the person who made it.

Does “no SynthID detected” mean the photo is real?

No. It only means the checked file did not produce a detectable SynthID signal in that check. The image could involve another AI system, lack a Google signal, or have been transformed in a way that affects detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are SynthID and C2PA the same thing?

No. SynthID is Google’s watermarking and identification technology. C2PA Content Credentials are provenance records that can describe origin and edits. Gemini may check or report both, so keep their findings separate.

Which Google option should I use?

Use Gemini for the convenient built-in check and context about SynthID and C2PA. Use SynthID Detector for a focused watermark scan. For a consequential decision, testing the same original file through both can clarify which signal each route sees, but neither is a universal authenticity test.

Is there a guaranteed accuracy rate or a universal upload limit?

Google’s documented pages do not provide an accuracy guarantee or one file-size and format limit that applies to every interface. Check the live Gemini or SynthID Detector instructions for your account, region and media type.

Does checking cost money or require special equipment?

The documented routes are software features and services; no special physical product is needed. Whether a feature is available, and under what account or regional conditions, should be confirmed in the current Google interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I quote the result in a report?

Yes, but quote the signal and scope precisely. Prefer “SynthID was detected” or “a C2PA credential was reported” and include the file version and check date. Avoid calling the image definitively real or fake on the basis of a negative or inconclusive result.

Bottom line for reporting a result

Use Gemini when you want the broadest built-in check and context about SynthID and C2PA. Use SynthID Detector when you want a dedicated watermark check. In either case, name the signal found, preserve the exact file and response, and keep the conclusion limited to what the check can establish. “SynthID detected” supports Google AI involvement in all or part of the image; “no SynthID detected” does not certify authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Gemini check if an image was made with Google AI?

Yes, for supported uploads Gemini can check for SynthID and C2PA-related signals. Ask directly whether the image was generated or edited with Google AI and read which signal it reports.

What does a SynthID result mean?

A detected SynthID watermark indicates that all or part of the image was created or edited with Google AI models. It does not prove the entire image was generated by AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does no SynthID prove an image is authentic?

No. It only means the checked file did not produce a detectable SynthID signal. Another AI system, a missing signal or file transformations could explain the result.

Should I use Gemini or SynthID Detector?

Gemini is the convenient option when you want context about SynthID and C2PA. SynthID Detector is the focused option for checking Google’s watermark.

Are there universal file limits or accuracy guarantees?

Google’s documented pages do not establish one limit for every interface or provide a universal accuracy guarantee. Check the live product instructions for your account, region and media type.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Gemini can check supported images for SynthID and C2PA signals, while SynthID Detector focuses on the SynthID watermark. Report the exact signal and scope. A positive SynthID result supports Google AI involvement in all or part of the image; a negative result is not proof of authenticity.
