To determine whether a BIG-IP device is vulnerable, record its complete TMOS version and build, provisioned modules, platform, and high-availability role. Match those details with the F5 security advisory and the fixed-version table for the same software branch. As of October 17, 2026, F5 marks BIG-IP 17.5.1.10 and 21.1.0.3 as critical releases that fix BIG-IP APM CVE-2026-94127. The safe remediation sequence is to verify the exact image, create a UCS backup, install the image on a new software volume, reboot in an approved window, and validate software, synchronization, traffic, and applications.
Why the BIG-IP product name is not enough
Vulnerability status is specific to the software branch, complete build, provisioned modules, platform, and deployment role. A device running LTM on an appliance can have a different exposure and upgrade path from a VE running APM in a cloud environment, even when both are described simply as “BIG-IP.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
BIG-IP version strings contain major, minor, maintenance, and point components. Use the complete value shown by the device when checking an advisory; do not compare only the first two numbers. Also record whether the system is a standalone appliance, a VE, a VIPRION or vCMP host, or a vCMP guest, and whether it is active or standby in an HA pair.
The same discipline answers the question, “How do I check if my F5 BIG-IP is vulnerable?” Start with an inventory, not with a generic product search. A release can fix one module while another provisioned module remains subject to a different condition. Exposure also depends on whether the relevant management or data-plane service is reachable from an untrusted network.

1. Inventory the device before you assess it
Collect the following information from the Configuration utility, TMSH, your change records, and the platform console:
- Complete TMOS/BIG-IP version and build.
- Provisioned modules, such as Local Traffic Manager (LTM), Access Policy Manager (APM), Advanced WAF/ASM, Advanced Firewall Manager (AFM), DNS, or SSL Orchestrator.
- Platform type: physical appliance, VE, VIPRION chassis, vCMP host, or vCMP guest.
- Cloud or virtualization platform when the device is a VE.
- HA status, config-sync group, traffic-group ownership, and current active or standby role.
- Management-plane and data-plane exposure, including whether affected services are reachable from untrusted networks.
Capture the current boot volume and software-image status as well. These details are needed both to select a compatible image and to prove what changed after the reboot.
Record the inventory before downloading anything. Include the device name, serial or platform identifier used by your change records, current license and provisioning state, and the person responsible for approving the change. The goal is to make the assessment reproducible: another operator should be able to see exactly which build and module set was compared with the advisory.

Use the security advisory and release notes for the exact branch. A fix listed for one branch is not automatically a fix for another. Check the advisory’s affected modules and conditions against the modules actually provisioned on the device.
| Candidate release | F5 status and date | Relevant fix identified in the notes | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17.5.1.10 | Release notes updated October 14, 2026; marked critical | BIG-IP APM CVE-2026-94127 lists 17.5.1.10 as a fixed version | Use only for systems supported on the 17.5 branch and whose module/platform combination is covered by the notes. |
| 21.1.0.3 | Release notes updated October 14, 2026; marked critical | CVE-2026-94127 lists 21.1.0.3 as a fixed version | Use only for systems supported on the 21.1 branch and after checking platform, module, and upgrade prerequisites. |
| 21.0.0.2 | Earlier 21.0 branch release | Notes list jQuery CVE-2020-11023 and several Jetty CVEs among that release’s fixes | Illustrates why a release note must be read for its own branch; it is not evidence that 21.0.0.2 fixes a later advisory. |
“Latest” therefore means the newest supported fixed release for your branch and platform, not simply the largest number published by F5. A newer branch may require a separate upgrade decision, license or platform support check, and a larger maintenance window. If your authenticated advisory access shows a different affected-version range, follow that advisory for your specific device.
When comparing candidate fixes, evaluate the exact branch and fixed version, affected module coverage, platform support, HA or vCMP topology, reboot and outage impact, rollback capability, and whether F5 labels the release critical or hardened. Do not choose only by the highest version number. A branch-compatible fixed build is safer than an incompatible newer build.
What does “latest BIG-IP hotfix” mean?
F5 may publish several branches at the same time. The correct hotfix is the newest supported fixed release for the branch already running, unless you have separately approved a branch upgrade. For example, 17.5.1.10 and 21.1.0.3 both address CVE-2026-94127 in their respective notes, but neither should be treated as a universal replacement for the other. Check the release-note prerequisites, supported platform list, and module applicability before treating a candidate as the fix.
3. Obtain and verify the exact BIG-IP image
Download the image that matches the selected branch, platform, and module support requirements, along with its corresponding checksum or signature material from F5. Do not rename files in a way that obscures their identity, and keep the original download and verification records with the change ticket.
F5 documents image-verification methods and exposes a verified yes state in software-image status. Verify the file before installation. When transferring from a workstation or staging host, F5 identifies Secure Copy Protocol (SCP) as the preferred transfer method.

- Confirm the image filename and release against the release-note version.
- Check the published checksum or signature using F5’s documented procedure.
- Confirm the Configuration utility or TMSH reports the image as verified.
- Stop if verification fails, the checksum differs, or the image is for a different platform or branch.
Verification is an installation prerequisite, not an optional post-install check. Keep the checksum output, image filename, transfer method, and verification result with the change record. If the image was copied through an intermediate staging host, verify it there and again after import when the device reports its software-image status.
4. Create a recoverable configuration backup
Create a UCS archive before changing software. In the Configuration utility, go to System > Archives, create the archive, and inspect the job for errors. Download the completed UCS file to a secure remote location. If the archive is encrypted, retain its passphrase in the organization’s approved password or recovery system.
A UCS archive does not capture a customized /var/spool/cron/root. If that file has been modified, back it up separately and protect it with the same controls as the UCS file. Record the device identity, current version, current boot volume, and backup location in the change record.
Do not consider a listed archive sufficient until its job has completed without errors and the file has been downloaded. A backup that remains only on the appliance does not help if the appliance has a storage or boot problem. Protect the archive and passphrase according to your normal recovery controls, and make sure the operator performing the change can retrieve them.
5. Install the fix on a new software volume
BIG-IP software installation is volume-based. The process copies the configuration to the new location and leaves the existing boot location unaffected. It cannot install over the active boot location, which preserves a practical recovery path.
Configuration utility procedure
- Open System > Software Management > Image List.
- Confirm that the imported image is present and shows a verified status.
- Select the image and choose an available volume set, or create a new one according to your storage capacity and F5’s release requirements.
- Click Install and monitor the job until it completes successfully.
- Do not delete the existing volume or UCS archive while acceptance testing is still in progress.
TMSH checks
Use TMSH to inspect images and current software volumes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
tmsh list sys software image
tmsh show sys software status
These commands help confirm that the intended image is available and show which volume is active. Use the release-specific F5 procedure for selecting the boot location and scheduling the reboot; do not infer boot commands from a different branch.
Installing to a new volume also makes the change auditable. Before rebooting, write down the old active volume and the target volume, the image’s verified state, and the installation job result. If storage capacity prevents creation of the target volume, stop and resolve that constraint rather than attempting to overwrite the active location.
6. Reboot during a controlled maintenance window
Schedule the reboot for an approved window that accounts for traffic failover, application testing, and the possibility of a second reboot or rollback. Notify application owners and monitoring teams before taking the device out of service.

After selecting the new volume, reboot and wait for the system to return. The old boot location remains available because the update process does not overwrite it. Keep it intact until the new installation is accepted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlan for the management interface to be unavailable during the reboot. Confirm console or out-of-band access, monitoring contacts, and the escalation path before starting. A maintenance window is not complete when the login page appears; reserve time to test synchronization, traffic, and representative applications.
7. Validate the running system after reboot
Validation must prove more than that the management interface opens. Check each item below and record the result:
- Running TMOS version, complete build, and boot location match the approved release.
- All expected modules are provisioned and report healthy status.
- Configuration-sync status is in the expected state, with no unexplained pending changes.
- HA failover status and traffic-group ownership are correct.
- Management access, authentication, DNS, NTP, logging, and monitoring operate normally.
- Virtual servers, pools, members, health monitors, routes, and relevant firewall policies show expected status.
- Representative applications complete real transactions through the device.
- System logs contain no upgrade, licensing, disk, or module-startup errors.
Leave the previous volume and verified UCS archive in place until these checks pass and the change owner accepts the result.
Use both control-plane and data-plane tests. A successful administrative login does not prove that virtual servers are accepting traffic, pools are healthy, authentication is working, or policies are behaving as expected. Test a representative transaction from the same network path used by customers or internal users, then compare monitoring and logs with the pre-change baseline.

Update the standby member first. Confirm that the peer is genuinely standby and that config-sync is healthy before starting. During the standby update, the active BIG-IP has no updated peer available, so F5 recommends performing the complete operation in a maintenance window for critical environments.
- Verify synchronization, failover health, image integrity, and backups on both members.
- Install the fixed image on the standby member’s new volume.
- Reboot the standby and validate its version, modules, sync state, interfaces, and application readiness.
- Fail traffic over according to the approved plan, observing connection-draining and application behavior.
- Update the former active member, then validate both devices and restore the intended traffic-group ownership only after synchronization is clean.
Do not assume that a successful standby reboot proves the pair is ready for failover. Check the actual sync and failover state before moving production traffic. During the interval when one member is being updated, the active device has no updated peer, so the change plan should include a clear abort point and an owner authorized to keep traffic on the surviving member.
vCMP hosts and guests require separate planning
vCMP hosts and guests are updated independently. F5 recommends updating the host before its guests and updating only one guest per slot at a time. Map guest ownership, slot placement, failover relationships, and application impact before scheduling the work. A host upgrade can affect multiple guests, so its maintenance window must include guest validation and recovery time.
Do not treat a guest image operation as a substitute for host planning. Identify which guests share a slot, which guest is active or standby, and how traffic will be preserved while a slot is unavailable. After the host is validated, update guests one at a time and verify each guest’s software, synchronization, and application behavior before proceeding to the next.

How to roll back a BIG-IP upgrade
If post-reboot validation fails, first stop traffic changes and preserve evidence: version output, boot-volume status, logs, and the failed validation results. The normal rollback asset is the previous boot volume, which the volume-based process leaves unchanged. Booting back to that volume restores the prior software location; use the approved F5 procedure for your release and platform.
If configuration data is damaged or the prior volume is unavailable, restore the UCS archive using F5’s documented recovery process. Restore any separately backed-up customized /var/spool/cron/root content only when required and appropriate for the recovered system. Do not delete the new volume until the incident is resolved and the change owner has approved cleanup.
Rollback should be a planned decision, not an improvised command sequence. Define the symptoms that trigger it, identify who can authorize it, and preserve the failed volume and logs for diagnosis. Once the old volume is running, repeat the basic software, sync, traffic, and application checks and document whether the issue is isolated to the new image, the configuration copy, or the surrounding platform.

The version appears fixed, but the advisory still lists the device
Recheck the complete build, affected module, and deployment conditions. A point release can contain a fix for one component while another provisioned module or branch remains affected. Confirm the advisory’s fixed-version table rather than relying on a product-level assumption.

The image will not install
Check image verification, available disk space, platform compatibility, licensing or support prerequisites, and whether the target is the active boot location. The installer cannot overwrite the active volume. A failed verification or mismatched image should be replaced, not bypassed.
The pair will not synchronize after reboot
Check that both devices run compatible software, have management connectivity, show the intended device-group membership, and report no pending or conflicting configuration changes. Do not fail over production traffic until synchronization and failover status are healthy.
Applications fail although the management UI works
Inspect virtual-server and pool health, traffic-group ownership, persistence, certificates, authentication services, routes, policies, and logs. Test a representative transaction from the same network path used by customers; a successful administrative login is not an application test.
An operator wants to choose the newest number
Do not make that choice without branch and platform checks. The newest published branch may not support the appliance, VE platform, module combination, or HA topology in use. Compare the fixed-version table for the running branch first, then treat any branch change as a separate project.

What is the latest BIG-IP hotfix?
There is no single hotfix for every device. As of October 17, 2026, F5’s notes mark 17.5.1.10 and 21.1.0.3 as critical and list CVE-2026-94127 as fixed in those respective branches. Select the newest supported fixed release for your branch and platform.
How do I install a BIG-IP security update?
Download the exact F5 image, verify its checksum or signature, create and retrieve a UCS archive, import the image, install it on a new non-active volume, reboot in an approved window, and validate software, modules, sync, traffic, logs, and applications.
How do I verify a BIG-IP software image?
Use F5’s published checksum or signature procedure and confirm the device reports the image as verified yes. Transfer the file with SCP when using the command line, and stop if verification fails or the platform and branch do not match.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I patch an F5 BIG-IP HA pair?
Update the standby member first after confirming healthy synchronization and failover status. Validate the standby, fail traffic over according to the approved plan, update the former active member, and restore traffic-group ownership only after both members synchronize cleanly.
Can I install over the active BIG-IP boot volume?
No. F5’s volume-based process installs to a new volume and leaves the existing boot location unaffected. This preserves the old location as a practical rollback asset.
What does a UCS backup include?
Create the archive through System > Archives, check the job for errors, and download it securely. A customized /var/spool/cron/root is not captured, so back that file up separately when it has been modified.
How are vCMP upgrades different?
Hosts and guests are updated independently. F5 recommends updating the host before guests and only one guest per slot at a time, with guest ownership, slot placement, failover, and application impact mapped in advance.
How do I roll back a BIG-IP upgrade?
Preserve logs and validation evidence, then use the approved procedure to boot the previous volume, which the update process leaves unchanged. If that volume is unavailable or configuration data is damaged, use F5’s documented UCS recovery process.
How do I know the patch worked?
Confirm the complete running version and boot location, expected module status, clean config-sync and failover state, management services, virtual-server and pool health, representative application transactions, and logs without upgrade, licensing, disk, or startup errors.
The Bottom Line
Check the complete BIG-IP build, modules, platform, and topology against F5’s branch-specific advisory. Verify the image, create a UCS backup, install to a new volume, patch HA or vCMP systems in the documented sequence, and keep the old volume until software, synchronization, traffic, and application validation are complete.
