On a centralized exchange, inspect the bid-ask spread and cumulative order-book depth, then estimate your average fill by walking the book. On a decentralized exchange, request a quote for the exact swap size and review its expected output and price impact. Compare the estimated total cost—including fees—with a limit you set before submitting. Trading volume or total pool value alone cannot show whether your specific order will execute cheaply.
What “enough liquidity” means for your ETH trade
Liquidity is not a permanent rating for ETH or even for an exchange. It depends on the particular pair, venue, direction, order size, and moment. A market may handle a small trade with little price movement while a larger trade consumes several price levels or moves a pool price substantially. Coinbase Help describes slippage as resulting from the amount of liquidity available to buy or sell without affecting price (Understanding slippage and spread).

There is no source-backed universal spread, depth, or daily-volume threshold that makes every ETH pair “liquid enough.” Decide in advance how much execution cost you are willing to accept for this trade, then check whether current conditions meet that limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck liquidity on a centralized exchange
- Open the exact market. Select the ETH pair against the quote asset you intend to use, on the venue where you will place the order. An ETH/USD order book is not interchangeable with ETH/USDT or another venue’s book.
- Read the best bid and ask. The best bid is the highest displayed buying price; the best ask is the lowest displayed selling price. To calculate the relative spread, use (ask − bid) ÷ midpoint, where midpoint = (ask + bid) ÷ 2. A smaller spread means a smaller immediate gap between the top displayed buy and sell prices, but it says nothing by itself about depth beyond those prices. Coinbase explains spread and slippage in its support guide.
- Inspect depth on both sides. Look at cumulative bids and asks around the midpoint, not just the first row of the book. Ask how much ETH or quote currency is available at progressively wider price levels. Visible orders can change or disappear, so treat the book as a snapshot rather than a guarantee. Ndax’s overview explains order books, depth, and slippage in practical terms (Crypto Liquidity, Order Books & Slippage Explained).
- Estimate the fill for your order size. A market buy consumes asks from the lowest price upward; a market sell consumes bids from the highest downward. Walk through enough levels to cover your planned amount, calculate the volume-weighted average execution price, and compare it with a suitable reference price before fees. A tight top quote can conceal a shallow book just beyond it.
- Check the other direction if your exit may be urgent. Buy-side and sell-side liquidity can differ. CoinMarketCap says its pair liquidity score simulates buys and sells at selected sizes and tracks slippage on both sides; its score methodology is described in Liquidity Score (Market Pair, Exchange). Use such a score as a comparative signal, not as a substitute for checking your own size.
- Add the venue’s current trading fee. A book-walk estimate is not your full execution cost. Check the venue’s fee page for the account and order type that apply to you, and include the fee in your comparison.
Check liquidity for a decentralized exchange swap
A DEX swap may not use a conventional central limit order book. Select the exact token pair and route, enter the amount you intend to swap, and inspect the quoted output and displayed price impact. Compare the quote with the no-impact or spot expectation if the interface provides one. Include the swap fee and network transaction cost when assessing total cost.

Pool value is not the same as the amount available to your trade at the quoted price. A route may use multiple pools, and price impact depends on the trade’s size relative to available liquidity. S&P Global defines DEX slippage by the difference between expected and actual token output and explains how a large trade relative to a pool can cause greater deviation (A dive into liquidity demographics for crypto asset trading).
For historical context only, S&P Global reported that a Uniswap v3 USDC-ETH pool totaled $158.8 million as of March 24, 2025. That dated pool figure does not describe current conditions or establish that a particular order size would have low slippage.

Compare alternatives using the same trade
When comparing venues or routes, hold the important inputs constant: pair, direction, notional, observation time, and fee assumptions. Compare the estimated total cost, not a venue-wide volume figure or a score in isolation.

|---|---|---|
| CEX order book | Relative spread, cumulative depth near the midpoint, book-walk average fill, and trading fee | Displayed depth can change; use the same pair, direction, and notional for each venue. |
| DEX route | Quoted output and price impact, plus swap fee and network transaction cost | Routes may draw on multiple pools; a headline pool total does not determine your quote. |
A CEX and a DEX expose different mechanisms and metrics, so compare their expected total cost for the same direction and amount rather than treating a spread, liquidity score, and price-impact figure as directly equivalent. CoinMarketCap’s score is based on its own methodology and selected test sizes; Binance’s described liquidity-analysis charts apply to selected USDⓈ-M and COIN-M futures pairs and eligible users, not every ETH spot market or every account (What Is Liquidity Analysis and What Are the Available Charts?).

Make the go/no-go decision
- Use a quote or order book for the exact market and intended size, and recheck immediately before placing the trade.
- Estimate the fill and total costs for the direction you will trade; check both directions if a fast exit matters.
- Proceed only if the estimated spread, price impact or slippage, and fees fit your own pre-set cost limit.
- If the cost exceeds your limit, consider reducing the order size, using a limit order where appropriate, or choosing another venue or route—then reassess its current quote.
A liquidity score or volume figure can help screen markets, but it is less actionable than a current, size-specific execution estimate. For technical exchange data concepts, see the CCXT Manual.
