Start with the relevant government’s own foreign-ministry or embassy directory, follow its link to the mission, and then inspect the complete web address. Confirm the country-specific domain rules, check that the connection uses HTTPS, and independently verify any request for passport details, login credentials or payment before submitting anything.
HTTPS, a familiar flag or seal, and a high search ranking are useful clues but not proof that you reached the intended embassy. A convincing fake site can copy the design of a government page, buy a search advertisement and obtain an HTTPS certificate.

1. Begin with an official government directory
Use the foreign ministry’s site, not an unsolicited link
Type the address of the relevant foreign ministry yourself, use a bookmark you created previously, or use a trusted government page that lists diplomatic missions. Locate the embassy or consulate directory, select the country and city, and follow the link shown there. This route is stronger than clicking a link in an email, text message, social-media post or online advertisement.
For U.S. missions, the Department of State’s Fraud Warning directs visitors to usembassy.gov for links to U.S. embassy and consulate websites. The State Department also warns that fake visa sites can copy official symbols and appearance. Treat the directory link as your starting point, not as permission to skip the later checks.
Why a search result is not enough
Search engines mix official pages, legitimate private providers and fraudulent advertisements. The GSA Office of Inspector General warns that malicious ads can put a fake government page at the top of results. A result labelled “Ad,” a high ranking or a familiar-looking title does not prove government ownership. If you use search for discovery, leave the results page and compare the destination with the address listed in the official directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Read the entire web address
Find the registrable domain
Look beyond the logo and the text displayed in the page. Read the address bar from left to right, including the ending after the final dot. The important organization name is normally the domain immediately before the top-level ending, but the complete address matters because scammers add words, hyphens, subdomains and different endings to create a familiar impression.

- Check for misspellings, swapped letters, doubled characters and unexpected hyphens.
- Look for an agency name followed by an unrelated ending.
- Be wary of an address that puts a trusted name in a subdomain or in a longer path while the actual domain belongs to someone else.
- Compare every character with the directory link; do not rely on a logo, color scheme or browser title.
Examples of misleading “government” wording
The FBI’s 2025 alert, “Impersonation Scheme Targeting Middle Eastern Students in the United States”, gives gov.org as an example of a spoof: the word “gov” appears, but the top-level domain is .org, not .gov. An address such as gsa-gov.org is likewise not the same as gsa.gov. The FBI describes repeated or misleading top-level-domain wording as a common scam technique.
Do not assume a familiar word anywhere in the address makes the site official. A fraudulent operator can register a domain containing an embassy’s country name, a ministry name or the word “visa.” The exact domain reached through the government directory is the meaningful comparison.
3. Apply the correct country-specific suffix rule
U.S. government websites
The U.S. Department of State says official U.S. government sites use .gov and directs users to usembassy.gov for its missions. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency explains in “Migrate to the .Gov Domain” that only verified U.S. government organizations can register a .gov domain. For a site claiming to be a U.S. embassy or consulate, a different ending is a serious reason to stop and return to the State Department directory.

UK government websites
UK guidance states that official UK government websites end in .gov.uk. This rule applies to UK government sites; it does not establish the domain pattern for another country’s embassy. Check the relevant ministry’s directory for the mission you need.

Other countries and diplomatic missions
There is no single suffix used by every embassy worldwide. Some governments use a national government domain, while others use a foreign-ministry or mission domain under their own country’s rules. Do not reject a site solely because it is not .gov or .gov.uk, and do not accept it solely because it contains the word “gov.” Establish the expected address through that country’s official foreign-ministry directory, then compare the complete domain character by character.
4. Understand what HTTPS proves—and what it does not
The federal HTTPS-Only Standard says HTTPS verifies the identity of a website or web service to a connecting client and encrypts nearly all information sent between the service and the user. In practical terms, HTTPS helps prevent someone on the network from reading or changing data in transit, and it establishes a secure connection to the domain shown in your browser.
That is a connection check, not an embassy-identity check. A fraudulent visa site can also obtain an HTTPS certificate, display a padlock and encrypt your form submission. If you reached the wrong domain, HTTPS securely connects you to the wrong domain. Verify the directory link and exact address first, then use HTTPS as an additional transport-security check.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- If the browser warns that the connection is insecure, do not enter credentials, passport information or payment details.
- If HTTPS is present, still inspect the domain and compare it with the official directory.
- Do not treat certificate details, a padlock icon or a “secure” marketing badge as government endorsement.
5. Validate the page before sharing information
Cross-check contact details
Compare the telephone number, email domain, street address and office hours with the embassy listing on the foreign ministry’s site. Use the directory’s contact information rather than a number supplied only by a suspicious page or message. A mismatch does not automatically prove fraud—offices can change systems—but it requires confirmation through an independent official channel.

Check the purpose of the page
Confirm that the page is actually an embassy or consulate site and not a private travel agency, document courier or visa consultant. A non-governmental service may be legitimate, but the State Department says such sites are not endorsed by it; verify their information against official instructions. For an application, find the official visa category, required documents, appointment method and payment instructions on the government site before using any intermediary.
Do not let visual polish substitute for evidence
Flags, seals, photographs of officials, legal notices, privacy statements and polished layouts are all easy to copy. Look for a consistent link back to the foreign ministry, matching contact information and the same application requirements shown in the official directory. Design quality is not an authentication method.

Pause before entering a passport number, date of birth, scan of an identity document, account password, one-time code or card details. Fake visa sites commonly seek both personal information and payment. The State Department’s fraud guidance describes sites that charge for services available through official channels or solicit personal data.

Recognize pressure tactics
UK Home Office guidance on fraud, tricks and scams identifies urgency, guaranteed visa or job claims, requests for confidential information and unusual payment routes as warning signs. A genuine fee can still be time-sensitive, so do not conclude that every fee request is fraudulent. Instead, verify the amount, recipient and payment method against the embassy’s official visa instructions or cashier page.
Best Value
Verify through an independent channel
- Close the suspicious page or message and reopen the embassy address from the foreign-ministry directory.
- Find the office’s telephone number or official email address on that directory page.
- Ask whether the exact web address, application form, fee and payment method are official.
- Only continue when the office confirms the request through that independently obtained contact route.
Never use a contact detail solely because it appeared in the unexpected message, advertisement or questionable page. A scammer controls those details and can make them look consistent.
Warning signs that should make you stop
| Signal | Why it is concerning | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| A link arrived unexpectedly by email, text or social media. | The sender may be steering you away from the official directory. | Discard the link and navigate from the foreign ministry’s site. |
The address contains “gov” but ends in .org, a commercial suffix or another unexpected ending. |
The wording can imitate a government domain without being one. | Compare the exact domain with the official directory. |
| The page appeared as a search advertisement. | Malicious ads can lead to fake government login or visa pages. | Use the directory link instead of the advertisement. |
| The site demands immediate payment or promises a guaranteed visa. | Urgency and guarantees are common fraud signals. | Verify the fee and claim through official contact details. |
| The site asks for unusual payment methods or confidential data before explaining the process. | The request is inconsistent with a transparent official workflow. | Stop and obtain the published instructions from the government site. |
| The browser shows an HTTPS warning. | Your connection may be exposed or the certificate may not match the domain. | Do not submit information; return to the official directory. |
Special cases: email, QR codes and mobile browsers
Links in email and text messages
Do not judge a link by its visible label. On a computer, hover over it to reveal the destination, but still type the official address yourself for a sensitive transaction. On a phone, press and hold only if you know how to preview a link safely; the reliable method is to open the browser separately and use the government directory.
QR codes
A QR code can conceal the same deceptive domain that an email link does. Treat it as a shortcut, not proof. After scanning, read the complete address and compare it with the directory before signing in or paying.
Translations and regional pages
An embassy may provide language-specific or regional pages under the same official domain. Check that the underlying domain remains the one listed by the government. A translated page hosted on an unrelated domain needs the same independent verification as any other third-party service.
What to do if you already used a fake site
Act according to what you submitted. The GSA Office of Inspector General’s scam alert recommends changing an affected password, contacting the legitimate website’s help desk and monitoring the relevant bank account. It also recommends reporting the incident to the responsible agency’s Inspector General and to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
- Change any password entered on the fake site. If you reused it elsewhere, change it there too, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Contact your bank or card issuer using the number on the card or an official statement, not a number from the suspicious page. Ask about blocking or replacing the payment method.
- Tell the legitimate embassy or ministry that its name or service was impersonated. Use contact information from the official directory.
- Preserve the URL, messages, receipts and screenshots as evidence, while avoiding further interaction with the scammer.
- Report a U.S.-related incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and the appropriate agency Inspector General. For another country, use that government’s official reporting and consular channels.
- If identity documents or highly sensitive personal data were exposed, ask the relevant embassy or national authority about document replacement and identity-protection steps.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- I opened the site through the relevant government or foreign-ministry directory.
- The complete domain matches the directory and contains no spelling change, extra word or unrelated ending.
- I applied the correct national rule: for example,
.govfor official U.S. government sites or.gov.ukfor official UK government sites, without assuming those rules apply worldwide. - The connection uses HTTPS, and the browser shows no certificate warning.
- The embassy’s contact details match an independently obtained official listing.
- The visa category, fee, recipient and payment method match the government’s published instructions.
- No message or page is pressuring me with a guarantee, threat or unusual payment demand.
If any item remains uncertain, do not submit the form or payment. Save the page address and ask the embassy through its independently sourced contact details.
Bottom line
The dependable test is a chain of evidence: reach the site from the government’s directory, inspect the exact domain under the issuing country’s rules, confirm HTTPS without mistaking it for an identity guarantee, and independently verify every sensitive request. A padlock, search ranking or official-looking design alone is never enough to trust an embassy website.
