How to Check Whether an Election-Related Claim or Image Is Authentic

Do not decide from appearance or outrage alone. Pause, identify the original source and date, verify the underlying fact with the election authority responsible for that jurisdiction, and investigate an image’s earlier appearances with reverse image search. These checks answer different questions: an official source can establish a voting rule or reported result, while image research can reveal that a genuine photograph is old, miscaptioned, or from another place.

The process below is designed for claims, photographs, screenshots, videos, and audio. U.S. federal guidance is most specific about U.S. elections; readers elsewhere should substitute their own national, regional, or local election authority.

Start with a pause, not a verdict

Election misinformation is often packaged to trigger anger, fear, triumph, or urgency. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) advises people to think twice before sharing and to be cautious with content designed to divide people. Emotion is not proof that a post is false, but intense emotion is a useful signal to slow down.

  1. Stop the forward. Do not repost, quote-post, or send the item while you are still relying on the caption or a screenshot.
  2. Save the evidence. Record the post URL if available, the account name, the visible date, and the exact wording. Downloading or screen-capturing an image can preserve details that later disappear, but keep the original link as well.
  3. Separate the claim from the presentation. Write down what is actually being asserted: for example, “This photograph shows today’s polling-place lines,” “The state changed its registration deadline,” or “The counting stopped because ballots were found.” A dramatic image and its caption may be making different claims.

Urgency can be part of the manipulation. A post demanding that you share “before it is deleted” deserves the same verification as any other post, not automatic rejection or acceptance.

Identify the original source and context

A repost, cropped screenshot, or short video may hide the publisher, publication date, location, and surrounding explanation. Start with the earliest traceable source rather than the account that brought the item to you.

Check who published it

  1. Open the profile or website that first appears to host the item.
  2. Check whether the account is the organization, candidate, newsroom, or election office it claims to be. Look for a consistent history, a normal contact page, and links that lead to the organization’s independently located website.
  3. Look for the underlying document, full video, dataset, or official statement. A screenshot of a headline is not the same as the linked article, and a clipped quote may omit a qualification.

Official guidance from CISA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation/CISA 2024 election-cycle public service announcement recommends checking election-security claims through trusted official sources. That advice applies even when a post appears to come from a familiar institution: impersonation accounts and copied logos can make an unofficial page look credible.

Record the date and the claim’s time frame

Ask whether the item is describing an event today, an earlier election, a prediction, or a policy that has since changed. Screenshots frequently omit the timestamp. A true photograph from a previous election can become false evidence when presented as a current scene, and a genuine rule can be obsolete after a legislative or administrative change.

Read beyond the caption

Search for the full article, thread, or video and inspect what comes immediately before and after the quoted passage. Note whether the post uses “could,” “reported,” or “confirmed” and whether a claim about one polling place is being generalized to an entire state. Preserve the exact wording before attempting to verify it.

Verify the underlying election fact with the responsible authority

For voting methods, registration, deadlines, polling places, provisional ballots, accessibility, recounts, and local incidents, the relevant state, territory, county, municipality, or national election office is the primary source. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) explains that it provides guidance and links but does not regulate elections; each U.S. state has a chief election official.

Question in the post Best authority to check first What that check can establish
Where and when can I vote? Local election office or the state’s chief election official Current polling location, hours, registration status, and applicable deadlines for that jurisdiction
Which identification, voting method, or ballot rule applies? State or territorial election authority, then the local office for implementation details The rule in force for the relevant election and area
Did an incident occur at a particular site? The responsible local election office, with an official statement or notice Whether the office has confirmed the incident and what action it took
How are ballots counted, audited, or recounted? State election site and the local canvassing authority The jurisdiction’s published process and current status
Is a nationwide claim true? National election authority where one exists, plus the affected local or regional authorities Whether the claim is being wrongly generalized across different systems

Find the official site independently

Do not rely solely on a link embedded in a viral post. Type the organization’s known web address yourself or reach it through a government directory, then navigate to the relevant election page. Compare the address carefully: a misspelling, extra word, unusual domain ending, or look-alike subdomain can indicate impersonation. The Government of Canada’s election-disinformation guidance specifically recommends checking the web address and locating confirmation independently.

Allow for publication lag

An official page may not address a rapidly spreading rumor immediately. Lack of a statement is not confirmation of the rumor. Check notices, press releases, election-night updates, and the office’s verified social channels, and look again if the situation is developing. Until the responsible authority or another strong primary source confirms the claim, label it unverified rather than presenting it as fact.

Use reverse image search to investigate an image’s history

Reverse image search can find earlier appearances of a photograph or graphic. It is most useful for testing whether an image fits the date, place, and story attached to it. The Canadian government’s guidance recommends this step when checking whether an image is related to the accompanying story.

Run the search

  1. Save the clearest available copy without adding filters or text. If the post contains a collage, crop each panel and search it separately.
  2. Run a reverse image search using the full image. If there are no useful results, try a tight crop around a distinctive sign, person, building, or object.
  3. Open several matches rather than trusting the first thumbnail. Record the earliest credible appearance, the stated date, the location, the photographer or publisher, and the original caption.
  4. Compare visual details: weather, shadows, storefronts, road signs, uniforms, ballot equipment, and the direction of lines or crowds.

Interpret matches cautiously

A matching result is a lead, not standalone proof. Search indexes may date a page by when it was crawled rather than when the photograph was taken, and the earliest result you see may itself be a repost. A genuine image can also be reused with a new but accurate caption. Confirm the provenance with the original publisher, a licensed news archive, an official statement, or another independent source.

When no match appears, do not conclude that the image is authentic. A new photograph, a private post, a heavily edited file, or an image that search engines have not indexed may produce no result.

Compare the two complementary checks

Official-source verification and image-provenance research are complementary rather than competing methods.

Check Primarily establishes Jurisdiction or scope Important limitation
Election-authority verification Whether a procedure, deadline, incident, count, or result is confirmed by the responsible authority Usually local or state; national claims may require several authorities An office may not have addressed an emerging viral post yet
Reverse image search and source comparison Where an image appeared earlier and whether its date, place, and caption fit Any location, but only as far as the image’s traceable history reaches A match cannot by itself prove the current claim or disprove every possible reuse

For a post saying that an old crowd photograph shows today’s voting, you need both: image research to locate the earlier event and an official source to check what is happening at the current location. For a text-only claim about a registration deadline, the election authority is usually the decisive check and reverse image search adds nothing.

Check links, documents, and corroboration

Inspect every link associated with the claim, including links hidden behind buttons or shortened addresses. Make sure the destination is the organization’s genuine site and that the page actually supports the wording in the post. A real government page can be quoted out of date or out of context.

Look for independent confirmation

  • Find the same announcement through the authority’s own navigation rather than through the viral post.
  • Compare the claim with a second independent primary source, such as a local election notice and a court filing or canvass report, when the issue is consequential.
  • Distinguish a report that says an allegation was made from a report that verifies the allegation.
  • Check whether the cited document applies to the same election, district, date, and type of ballot.

Several accounts repeating identical wording are not necessarily independent corroboration. They may all be copying one unverified post.

Recognize synthetic or manipulated media without relying on “AI detection” by eye

Artificial intelligence can imitate officials in text, images, video, or audio. The EAC’s current artificial-intelligence resource page, dated June 3, 2026, warns that AI-generated voter information can look plausible while being inaccurate. Realistic appearance therefore cannot authenticate a message.

Use visual and audio irregularities as prompts

Look for hands, text on signs, repeated faces, impossible reflections, mismatched shadows, abrupt changes in lighting, unnatural mouth movement, clipped breaths, or a voice that does not match the speaker’s normal delivery. These clues are not a verdict: compression, poor lighting, dubbing, and ordinary editing can create similar artifacts. Treat them as reasons to seek the original file and an official confirmation.

Test the claim, not just the pixels

An image showing unusually long polling-place lines is the qualitative example in the EAC’s August 2023 AI Toolkit for Election Officials of a possible synthetic election-influence tactic. The useful question is not “Can I spot the generator?” but “Does the responsible election office confirm this location and event, and can the image’s provenance be established?”

For audio or video of an alleged official, locate the statement through the office’s verified website or channel, check the complete recording, and compare the date and event with the office’s schedule. Do not treat a convincing voice, logo, or uniform as authentication.

Handle claims about counting, audits, and results carefully

Counting and certification timelines vary by jurisdiction. Ballots may be processed, canvassed, audited, recounted, and certified under different rules, and an unofficial election-night total is not the same as a certified result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify whether the post refers to an unofficial update, canvass, audit, recount, or final certification.
  2. Open the state or territorial election site and find its current results page, calendar, notices, and explanation of outstanding ballots.
  3. Check the local canvassing authority for county- or district-level information.
  4. Read the published testing and audit procedures before interpreting a delay or a changing total.
  5. Do not infer misconduct from a delay alone. Ask what the authority says is being processed and whether a statutory deadline or audit step explains the timing.

The EAC’s material on trusting election outcomes describes testing and auditing in general terms while directing readers to state-specific information. Those general procedures do not establish what happened in a particular jurisdiction; the local authority’s records do.

Apply the method to common formats

“This image shows today’s polling-place problem”

  1. Save the image and exact caption.
  2. Reverse-search the image and inspect the earliest credible use.
  3. Check visible signs, weather, architecture, and location clues against the claimed site.
  4. Contact or check the local election office for a notice about the alleged closure, line, equipment failure, or incident.
  5. Share only what both the provenance and official information support.

“The election office changed the deadline”

  1. Write down the state, county, election, and deadline named.
  2. Find the official election page independently.
  3. Check the current calendar, emergency notices, and any court or legislative update linked by the authority.
  4. Compare the post’s date with the rule’s effective date.

“The count stopped because ballots were found”

  1. Determine which count or update the post means and when it was posted.
  2. Check the jurisdiction’s results and canvass pages.
  3. Look for an official explanation of provisional ballots, late-arriving eligible ballots, canvassing, or an audit.
  4. Do not convert an unresolved allegation into a finding of wrongdoing.

“This recording is an official telling voters what to do”

  1. Find the speaker’s statement on the office’s independently located website or verified channel.
  2. Compare the complete recording, date, and event with the clipped version.
  3. Verify every instruction—location, hours, eligibility, or deadline—with the election authority before acting.

Common failure modes and how to correct them

  • Trusting a familiar logo: Open the organization’s site independently and verify the address.
  • Assuming the oldest search result is the original: Inspect the page’s date, author, caption, and evidence of first publication.
  • Treating “no result” as proof: Absence from reverse search does not authenticate a new or private image.
  • Using one dramatic detail as a verdict: A visual oddity can result from compression or editing; corroborate the event itself.
  • Generalizing across jurisdictions: Voting rules, counting procedures, and publication schedules differ. Match the claim to the exact authority and election.
  • Confusing repetition with confirmation: Ten accounts copying one source still provide one source.
  • Assuming a delay proves misconduct: Check the published process and current official explanation first.
  • Sharing a false claim while correcting it: If you must warn others, state the verified fact and link or name the responsible authority rather than amplifying an unverified image or headline.

A compact checklist before you share

  1. Have I paused long enough to separate the factual claim from the emotional framing?
  2. Do I know the original publisher, date, location, and complete context?
  3. Have I checked the official election authority for this exact jurisdiction and election?
  4. If an image is involved, did I run a reverse image search and inspect earlier captions?
  5. Did I verify the web address independently instead of trusting the embedded link?
  6. Could the item be synthetic, edited, or an authentic image reused for a different event?
  7. For a counting or results claim, did I distinguish unofficial updates from canvass, audit, recount, or certification?
  8. Can I state precisely what is confirmed, what is unverified, and what remains unknown?

If any answer is no, do not present the item as established fact. Keep the original evidence, continue checking the responsible authority, and describe the uncertainty accurately.
