Short answer: Open EA Help’s cross-play and cross-progression overview, select the exact game, and then read that title’s platform, console-generation, edition, and mode rules. Check cross-play and cross-progression separately: one does not imply the other. Finally, verify that the correct platform account is linked to the EA Account you actually use.
Start with the exact game, not the EA catalog
EA does not apply one universal cross-play or cross-progression rule to every title. Its overview separates the two features and links to game-specific help pages. Open the overview, find your game, and follow its individual article before deciding whether you and a friend can play together or whether your progress will appear on another platform.

Use the game’s exact name and edition. A similarly named release, a different console generation, or a separate annual edition can have different support. The title page is the authoritative place to check the platform pair, generation grouping, and online modes that are actually included. EA’s overview page was identified with a 2024-10-21 page date; EA Help pages can be updated independently, so use the current title-specific article when you make the decision.

Cross-play
Cross-play means playing with people who are using a different platform. The question is, “Can this game put my platform and my friend’s platform in the same supported online session?” A game can support cross-play only for particular platform combinations, console generations, or modes.

Cross-progression
Cross-progression means accessing your game progress on another platform. Progress can include mode-specific unlocks, levels, currencies, or other saved advancement, but the title’s rules determine what actually carries over. EA says supported cross-progression is automatic in the games described by its overview; it is not a switch that can create support where the game has none.
Do not treat similar labels as proof
“Cross-platform,” “cross-gen,” and “dual entitlement” can describe different capabilities. A game being sold on several platforms does not prove that players from different console families can play together. Cross-gen support may mean only that two generations from the same manufacturer can run or share a version. Dual entitlement may grant access to more than one version without sharing multiplayer sessions or progression. Read the game-specific definitions instead of inferring support from a store listing or a label.
The reliable six-step verification workflow

1. Open EA’s overview
Go to Does my EA game have cross-play and cross-progression? and look in both the cross-play and cross-progression sections. They are separate lists, so check both even if you only need one feature today.

2. Select the exact title and edition
Follow the link for the game you own or plan to buy. Record the title as EA names it, including any edition or platform-generation wording. Do not substitute a different release because its name looks similar.

3. Identify the permitted platform pair
On the title-specific page, find the platforms that can interact. Check your platform against your friend’s platform rather than reading “available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox” as a blanket statement. Some pages divide players into groups instead of allowing every listed platform to connect.

4. Check generation and game-mode restrictions
Look for separate rules for current- and older-generation consoles, and for a list of supported online modes. A feature may work in one mode but not another, or between two generations from the same manufacturer but not between different console families.

5. Confirm the EA Account and platform link
Sign in to the EA Account you use in the game and inspect Connected Accounts for the relevant platform. EA’s account guidance explains the setup in How to get started with an EA game and Link your EA Account to your console, Steam, Twitch, and more. Linking can enable a supported feature, but it cannot add cross-play or cross-progression that the game does not provide.

6. Check the in-game social or connectivity menu
If the title supports it, open its settings or EA Connect social menu and look for the cross-play or friend controls described by the game’s help page. EA Connect is title-dependent; its presence, labels, and available controls are not evidence that every EA game supports the same features.
How to read the title-specific page
Read the page as a set of conditions, not as a marketing summary. First find the heading that names the feature you need. Then identify every platform named in that section and whether EA places them in separate groups. “PC, PlayStation, and Xbox” can mean that all three are supported in some combination, or that they are divided by generation; only the detailed grouping answers your question.
Next, look for qualifiers such as “current generation,” “older generation,” or a named mode. A restriction attached to one feature does not automatically apply to the other. For example, a page can permit multiplayer between a pair while limiting progression to a particular mode or platform family. Record the qualification alongside the yes-or-no result so you do not accidentally overstate support when telling a friend.
Also distinguish access to a version from access to a shared service. Buying or downloading the same game on two platforms confirms only that each platform has a version. It does not establish that the versions share matchmaking, friends lists, saves, unlocks, or other progress. Those capabilities must be stated in the game’s EA Help article.

What to record when you compare two platforms
Write down the answers below before inviting a friend or moving to another console. This prevents a common mistake: confirming that a game supports a feature in general while overlooking the one combination you need.

Account linking: necessary check, not a compatibility test
EA’s account-linking instructions are useful when a title supports a feature but the game cannot see your friend, your platform, or your progress. Sign in to the EA Account, open the account-management area, and review Connected Accounts. Confirm that the platform account shown there is the one used to launch the game.
Account linking does not change the game’s feature set. If the title page excludes your platform pair or mode, connecting another account will not create a cross-play path. Likewise, linking two platforms does not guarantee that all progress is shared; the game may limit progression to one mode or to platforms in the same family.
For social features, use the game’s own settings or EA Connect when the title provides it. EA explains how EA Connect can link and manage games at How to use EA Connect to link and manage your games. Because EA Connect availability is title-dependent, a missing menu can be a game limitation rather than an account error.

When EA lists cross-progression for a game, the overview describes it as automatic. That means there is no separate universal transfer switch to turn on. It does not mean every item, mode, or platform is included. The title-specific page still controls which progress is shared and where it can appear.
Before changing platforms, write down the original platform, the EA Account identity, and the mode whose progress matters. Then compare those details with the destination platform’s entry on the title page. This simple record helps distinguish an unsupported path from a sign-in mistake and avoids testing with an unrelated account.

- Recheck the title page. Confirm the exact game and edition, then verify that your two specific platforms are listed together.
- Compare generations. Make sure one player is not in an older-generation group while the other is in a current-generation group that the title keeps separate.
- Check the mode. Switch to a mode explicitly listed as supported, if the game offers more than one online mode.
- Inspect the in-game control. Look for the title’s cross-play or EA Connect setting and make sure the relevant account is signed in.
- Verify the linked accounts. Reopen Connected Accounts and confirm that each player is using the intended EA Account and platform identity.
If the pair, generation, and mode are excluded by the title-specific documentation, no account change can make that combination work. Choose a supported platform pair or mode instead.
If cross-progression or saved progress is missing
First establish whether the game promises progression for the particular platforms and mode. A title can offer cross-play while keeping progression separate, or it can share progression only within a console family.
- Identify the EA Account in use. Sign out and back in if necessary, then compare the account identity with the one used on the original platform.
- Check the platform link. In Connected Accounts, confirm that the new platform is attached to that same EA Account.
- Check the mode. Read the title page for exclusions; progress may be available in one mode and absent in another.
- Allow for the supported path only. Same-manufacturer generation upgrades may be supported while a move between console families is not.
- Do not create a second EA Account to test. EA’s lost-progress guidance at How to find lost progress in your EA game says EA cannot transfer progress between EA Accounts. Using a different account can therefore make the original progress harder to locate.
If the account and platform link are correct but the title does not list the mode or platform path, the missing progress is a documented limitation rather than a synchronization setting you can enable.

EA SPORTS FC shows why a game-by-game check matters. EA’s Cross-play in EA SPORTS FC guidance says cross-play is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but it separates players by console generation. Current-generation consoles and PC are grouped together, while older-generation consoles form a separate group. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 do not support cross-play for EA SPORTS FC.
The same page describes a different progression rule: on PlayStation, cross-progression is available only in Ultimate Team, and progression stays within the same platform family. A move from PS4 to PS5 can use that family path, as can Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S; PlayStation progression does not move to Xbox.

This example is specific to EA SPORTS FC. It is not a rule that can be applied to every EA game: another title may use different platform groups, modes, or progression limits.
Common assumptions that produce wrong answers
- “It is on both platforms, so we can play together.” Availability on two stores does not establish cross-play.
- “It has cross-gen support, so every generation can join.” Cross-gen can describe a same-manufacturer upgrade or a separate player pool.
- “Cross-play means my save will follow me.” Multiplayer compatibility and saved-progress access are separate checks.
- “Connecting the account unlocks the feature.” Linking is a setup requirement for supported titles, not a way to add unsupported functionality.
- “The social menu is missing, so my account is broken.” EA Connect and similar controls are title-dependent.
- “My progress is gone, so I should create another EA Account.” Check the original account first; EA says it cannot transfer progress between EA Accounts.
A compact decision checklist
- Open EA’s current cross-play and cross-progression overview.
- Open the exact game-specific article.
- Check cross-play and cross-progression as separate entries.
- Match the two platform names exactly.
- Check console generation and the online mode.
- Confirm the correct EA Account and platform account under Connected Accounts.
- Use the in-game settings or EA Connect only when the title’s instructions provide them.
- If progress is missing, verify the account before taking any recovery action.
Keep the result current
EA’s overview, account-help pages, and individual game pages can change on different schedules. The platform, generation, and mode details above reflect EA Help pages accessed on 2026-10-13. Before buying a version, moving to a new console, or promising a friend that a session will work, reopen the title-specific page and check the current wording.
