How to check whether an ATX case fits your motherboard, GPU, and CPU cooler

Yes. Check the exact dimensions and mounting standards for your motherboard, graphics card, and cooler against the case maker’s specifications, then recalculate clearance for the layout you intend to use. Form-factor names such as ATX or E-ATX are useful starting points, but they do not describe every physical dimension or cable and radiator conflict.

Start with the exact parts, not the product family

Compatibility is established by the specific model numbers. A graphics processor name does not tell you the length or thickness of a particular card, and an E-ATX label does not identify one universal board size. Write down the full motherboard, GPU, CPU cooler or radiator, and case model before comparing specifications.

Download or open the current specification pages and installation notes for all four products. Case specifications can differ by market and can be revised, so use the page for the case revision you are actually buying. If a specification says “maximum” or “up to,” treat it as a boundary for a particular configuration, not as a promise that every component at that boundary will install easily.

Check motherboard support and dimensions

Match the board form factor

Find the case’s supported motherboard list. A full-size ATX case may support ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX, while a smaller case may support only the latter two. Do not infer support from the case’s name or from the fact that it is marketed as a PC case.

Confirm that the case provides the correct standoff pattern and rear-I/O opening for the board. The manufacturer’s supported-form-factor list is the authoritative first check; physical room inside the chassis is not enough if standoffs or the I/O opening do not align.

Treat E-ATX as a measured size

E-ATX is not tightly standardized. Two boards sold as E-ATX can have different widths, and a case may support only a stated maximum width and height. Compare the board’s actual measurements with the case’s E-ATX limit, including any side-mounted cable channels or grommets that occupy the nominal motherboard area.

MSI’s guidance is explicit: “Always make sure the PC case specifications explicitly confirm that your chosen motherboard form factor is compatible.” That check is especially important for E-ATX, where the label alone cannot settle fit.

Measure graphics-card clearance in four dimensions

Length is only the first limit

Compare the exact GPU length with the case’s maximum GPU length. Then inspect the conditions attached to that number. A front radiator, front fans, drive cage, or a movable bracket can reduce the available length. Some specifications give one maximum with an empty front area and a shorter maximum when a radiator or cage is installed.

Check thickness and occupied slots

Record the card’s slot thickness, usually expressed as a number of expansion slots or as millimetres. A card that fits the stated length can still block adjacent slots, interfere with a bottom fan, or collide with a side-mounted radiator. Verify that the case has enough rear expansion openings and that the motherboard’s slot position leaves room for the cooler shroud.

Allow for power plugs and side-panel space

Measure where the GPU’s power connectors sit. A connector that exits from the card’s side or top needs a bend radius before the side panel can close. In a narrow case, the cable can be the limiting dimension even when the card itself clears the front and rear panels. Look for the case maker’s notes about cable space and side-panel clearance rather than assuming a flush fit is acceptable.

Check an air CPU cooler’s height and memory clearance

Compare cooler height with the case limit

Use the cooler’s complete installed height, including its fan, and compare it with the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height. Do not substitute the CPU socket height or the heatsink tower height if the manufacturer specifies a different assembled dimension. A few millimetres of nominal margin can disappear because of a side-panel bulge, motherboard tray tolerances, or an offset mounting system.

Verify RAM and VRM clearance

Large tower coolers can extend over the memory slots or the motherboard’s voltage-regulator heatsinks. Check the cooler’s published RAM-height allowance and the board’s slot layout. If the front fan must be raised to clear tall memory modules, add that increase to the cooler’s height and compare the revised dimension with the case limit. Raising the fan can also obstruct the side panel or reduce clearance to a top radiator.

Check a liquid cooler as a complete assembly

Match radiator size and mounting position

Confirm both radiator dimensions and the case positions that accept them. “Supports a 240 mm radiator” does not prove that every 240 mm radiator will fit: radiators vary in actual length, thickness, end-tank shape, and fan arrangement. Check whether the case specifies front, top, rear, or bottom mounting and whether the selected position supports the radiator thickness plus fan thickness.

Inspect nearby motherboard and component clearance

Top-mounted radiators can overlap tall motherboard heatsinks or memory. Front-mounted units can occupy the space needed by a long GPU. Bottom-mounted units may compete with the graphics card, power-supply shroud, or floor filters. Use the case’s installation diagram and clearance notes, not just the radiator-size label.

Plan tube routing before buying. The pump block, tube bend, and radiator orientation must all clear the RAM, graphics card, and side panel. A nominally supported radiator can be incompatible with a specific motherboard layout or with a GPU installed in the longest position.

Understand how layout changes the published limits

Case specifications describe a configuration, not an immutable rectangular volume. Moving a drive cage, choosing a different fan position, installing a radiator, or using a vertical GPU bracket can change the remaining clearance. Read every footnote attached to the GPU, cooler, and radiator figures.

  • SEAMLESS CABLE MANAGEMENT-Effortlessly route and conceal cables using the wide channels, hooks, and straps.

Compact cases make this trade-off especially visible. Fractal Design’s Terra uses a movable motherboard plate: shifting the plate enlarges either the CPU chamber or the GPU chamber. Its support information lists a 322 mm maximum GPU length in one configuration, falling to 200 mm when a 120 mm radiator is installed. CPU-cooler clearance changes across the seven plate positions, ranging from 77 mm to 48 mm, and GPU thickness and width also affect which positions are usable. The practical lesson is to choose the plate position and cooling hardware together, then verify the resulting dimensions.

Worked manufacturer specifications

The following figures illustrate how to read a specification sheet. They are limits for the named models, not general ATX standards or guarantees for all combinations.

Case model Motherboard support Maximum GPU length Maximum CPU-cooler height Radiator information
MSI MPG GUNGNIR 300R AIRFLOW E-ATX up to 280 × 305 mm; ATX; Micro-ATX; ITX 360 mm 175 mm Not stated in the cited specification used here
MSI PRO FORGE M050A Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX only 300 mm 160 mm Rear 120 mm; top 120/240 mm
Fractal Design Terra Clearance depends on movable motherboard-plate position 322 mm; 200 mm with a 120 mm radiator 77 mm to 48 mm across seven plate positions 120 mm radiator condition changes GPU clearance

MSI notes that specifications can vary by model and market and may change. Verify the current product page and installation notes before ordering. The M050A example demonstrates why “ATX case” cannot be assumed: its listed motherboard support excludes full-size ATX. Terra demonstrates why a single length or height number may be insufficient in a compact layout.

A repeatable fit-check procedure

  1. List every exact model. Record the case revision, motherboard model, GPU model, CPU cooler or radiator model, fan sizes, and any drive cages or brackets you plan to install.
  2. Copy the case limits. Create a worksheet with supported motherboard forms, maximum GPU length, GPU thickness or slot notes, maximum air-cooler height, radiator positions and sizes, power-supply constraints, and side-panel or cable-clearance notes.
  3. Measure the motherboard. For ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX, confirm the case’s supported list. For E-ATX, enter the board’s actual width and height and compare them with the case’s stated maximum.
  4. Calculate GPU length in the chosen layout. Start with the case’s maximum for the relevant position, subtract any reduction caused by a radiator, front fan, cage, or bracket, and compare the result with the card’s full length. Confirm thickness, slot occupancy, connector direction, and cable bend room separately.
  5. Calculate air-cooler height. Use the cooler’s assembled height, then add any fan offset required to clear your memory modules. Compare that total with the case’s maximum and inspect the side-panel clearance.
  6. Calculate liquid-cooler clearance. Match the radiator’s actual dimensions and fans to a supported mounting position. Check overlap with RAM, VRM heatsinks, GPU, storage cages, and the power-supply shroud.
  7. Validate the installation sequence. Check whether the radiator, cooler, GPU, or motherboard must be installed first. A combination may be dimensionally possible but impossible to assemble because one part blocks the screws or mounting hardware for another.
  8. Recheck the manufacturer notes immediately before purchase. Confirm that the figures still apply to your market and case revision; do not rely on an old retailer listing or a product-family maximum.

Common fit failures and how to resolve them

The board is wider than the E-ATX allowance

Re-measure the board from the manufacturer’s drawing, including any protruding heatsinks or edge connectors that the case’s cable channel may cover. If the width exceeds the stated allowance, choose a case with a larger E-ATX limit rather than forcing the board against the tray or omitting required standoffs.

The GPU length works only without the front radiator

Use the case’s reduced GPU limit for the radiator configuration. If the card is too long, move the radiator to a supported top or rear position, select a shorter card, remove a cage that is not needed, or choose a larger case. Do not trim structural parts or operate with the side panel removed as a substitute for clearance.

The cooler fits the socket but not the side panel

Recalculate using the complete cooler height and any raised fan position. A lower-profile cooler, a different fan placement, or a case with greater cooler clearance solves the problem; changing motherboard standoffs is not a safe workaround.

The radiator is listed as supported but collides with the board

Check radiator and fan thickness, motherboard heatsink height, memory height, and tube routing in the selected position. Try the manufacturer’s alternate mounting position only if its GPU and motherboard clearances are also documented. Otherwise select a thinner radiator, a different cooler size, or another case.

The GPU power cable presses against the panel

Measure the connector and cable bend area, not just the card body. Use a case with more side-panel depth, a card with connectors in a less restrictive location, or an appropriately rated cable with a bend profile approved by its manufacturer. Never close a panel by sharply folding a high-power connector at the plug.

How to choose between two cases that both fit

First eliminate any case that fails a hard dimension or mounting requirement. Among the survivors, compare the following in this order:

  • Configuration margin: Prefer extra GPU length, cooler height, and side-panel space so a future component or cable does not consume the entire tolerance.
  • Cooling layout: Check whether the case supports the radiator or fan positions you actually intend to use without sacrificing GPU clearance.
  • Motherboard access: Consider E-ATX width, top-edge access, and whether tall memory or VRM heatsinks constrain installation.
  • Assembly and service: Look for removable brackets, accessible fan mounts, dust filters, and enough cable-management room to route power safely.
  • Non-fit preferences: Once physical compatibility is secure, compare front I/O, external size, airflow path, filters, storage mounting, and appearance.

Do not convert the model-specific figures in the examples into a general failure rate. No general statistic establishes how often PC parts fail to fit; the reliable method is still an exact-model comparison with the case’s configuration notes.
